Is the Veepstakes Blunting Obama's Attacks?

ABC News' Andy Fies Reports: The fog of speculation over who will accompany Sen. Barack Obama down the aisle in Denver has obscured his message.

Usually a candidate can expect a fair amount of attention for delivering forceful remarks in a proverbial "lion's den" of his opponent's friends.

Obama told the McCain-friendly VFW convention in Orlando Tuesday that the Arizona senator had better back off questioning his patriotism. "Let me be clear," he said. "I will let no one question my love of this country."

He also sharply challenged McCain's judgement in the war on terror: "For all of his talk about following Osama bin Laden to the Gates of Hell, Sen. McCain refused to join my call to take out bin Laden across the Afghan border...."

And he added: "If we think that we can secure our country by just talking tough without acting tough and smart, then we will misunderstand this moment."

There was much more but it hardly mattered.

The three networks led their broadcasts with the Veepstakes story. On the wires, Obama-in-front-of-Vets was no match for Obama-and-his-Veeps. That story had six rewrites by 6pm. The speech challenging McCain on what has become a major character issue in this election had only two.

Tonight on MSNBC, Dan Abrams led a discussion about Obama's use of the pronoun "he" instead of "she" when asked to describe the qualities he wanted in a running mate.

John McCormick, the Obama reporter for the Chicago Tribune said the VFW story would figure in "somewhere at the bottom" of his Tuesday piece which was all about the coming VP selection.  He added, "And that (section) will probably get cut down."

Regardless of whether the media is leading or responding to interest in who will be veep, the frenzy is predictable. This is one of the last major unknowns of the campaign.

There are no doubt compelling reasons for the time it has taken Obama to choose his running mate.  The question is, has he paid a price for his deliberateness?

WHERE THERE IS DOUBT, err on Caution !!!!!

Imagine a candidate who needs his mother, his sister and his wife to vouch for him in his Convention ?

Like a criminal locked up in jail needing his mother, his sister and his wife to vouch for him in court?

A mother will say wonderful things about a killer son, no matter what.

NO OBAMA 08 is COMMON SENSE ... !!

Another Hillary Supporter for MCCAIN .

Let us do EVERYTHING to help MCCAIN WIN.
COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY.

Too busy soliciting votes for MCCAIN to be bothered who Obama chooses for his VP.

They are probably really hard to come by. I bet it just pisses you off that your going to lose in November. You probably shouldn't work your self up to much. Your right about not caring because it really doesn't matter. mccain still going to lose.

I will be volunteering in McCain offices for the next three months and do everything I can to get him elected...HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN...STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS, unlike the "nuanced" Obama as he's referred to after the Saddleback faith forum.

I am simply not understanding this, the 28% Hillary supporters. WHY in the name of GOD would you vote for McCain??? Just because you're disappointed that Hillary lost the primaries by a narrow margin?? I've heard of sour grapes, but this is INSANE!! I watched the primaries, and Obama held many of the same policy positions Hillary did; they only differed in the manner of how they planned to execute said policies. McCain has been walking in lock-step with Bush for months now. You worked so hard for Hillary in the primaries because you didn't want the four more years of Bush that McCain represents. For Hillary supporters to vote for McCain spits on everything she's ever stood for. Way to show your support!

This is a free country; you're allowed to vote for whomever you choose. But keep this in mind; when McCain gives the order to attack Iran and everything explodes in the Middle East, the blood will be on YOUR hands.

When our economy goes down the toilet because McCain follows Bush's example and favors corporations over middle class and working Americans; when more and more American jobs are lost overseas; when more people lose everything; you won't have to go far to find out who to blame. Just go into your bathroom and look in the mirror.

Obama's numbers are dwindling fast and his electoral lead is all but evaporated. No wonder the Obama team wants to change the subject. They are sounding really worried. Even David Gergen thinks so.

Yeeehaw. Love it!!

Posted by: Jo | Aug 20, 2008 3:13:51 AM

obama and his supporters are sounding really, really, desperate as obama goes into free-fall in the polls.

his only salvation is hillary.

his lead is slip, slipping, away. today cnn reports obamas lead has diminished by half!

Posted by: sonia trevino | Aug 20, 2008 3:24:59 AM

and remember the loudest voices saying they were for Hillary on this site WERE republicans who voted for George Bush first...

back in the primaries they stated that trying to use it as a way to threaten they were voting for hillary and we would lose those cross overs that came from Bush

so don't be fooled the same people who brought you George W Bush, D!ck Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Gonzales, and Scooter and Rove are now on here telling you they will "fight for three months" to bring you John McCain.

America's smarter than that

Posted by: dl | Aug 20, 2008 3:49:36 AM

John McCain, experience? Let's think about this one:

Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush tons of experience there, but where did it get us? The U.S. is 10 TRILLION in debt, we are fighting two wars (one half hearted, the other entirely unnecessary), our reputation in the world community is in the dumper, tens of thousands are losing their homes, the cost of living is going up every day, the dollar is collapsing in world currency markets, and meanwhile inflation has risen from the dead and is starting to make its grand comeback right here at home.

Experience?

Folks we need much more than experience in our nation's highest office. We need brilliance! We need judgement like we've never had in the nation's capital before. We need insight for nearly the entire spectrum of human affairs. We need a president with real wisdom of leadership, and we need it NOW, or else I fear that soon, everything we dearly value will only be a memory.

We CERTAINLY need someone who can do far more than punch out shallow one-liners and 40 year old war stories. Drilling and nuclear plants will NOT solve our economic ailments, just as we can not bomb our way to a resolution of every international issue.

So who will be McCain's VP selection? Does it really matter in this case?

To quote a snippet of Jack Cafferty's recent blog post, "Where are John McCain's writings exploring the vexing moral issues of our time? Where are his position papers setting forth his careful consideration of foreign policy, the welfare state, education, America's moral responsibility in the world, etc., etc., etc.?

John McCain graduated 894th in a class of 899 at the Naval Academy at Annapolis. His father and grandfather were four star admirals in the Navy. Some have suggested that might have played a role in McCain being admitted. His academic record was awful. And it shows over and over again whenever McCain is called upon to think on his feet."

Do YOU really want another one, just like the other one?

It does not matter who he chooses as long as it is not Hillary Clinton. Hillary will help him win and he would like him to lose so Hillary can contest in 2012.

Barack Obama is a fringe-left candidate.

Posted by: Roger Miller | Aug 20, 2008 4:41:45 AM

To anyone who thinks that supporting McCain will position H. Clinton for a win in 2012, consider this: how much party support will Clinton receive if she and her supporters don't help the party's 2008 choice? And while I have your attention, do me a favor: look up the word "petulant."

No its no the veeps that are blunting the attacks, its that the attacks are lame and Obama has turned to everything he has railed against.

If Barack Obama and the DNC does not realize that they are missing a big chunk of the Democratic primary voters (and the poll numbers are making it pretty darn obvious now) then THEY deserve ALL the blame if Democrats lose in November.

If BHO can't even bring his own party together, then that sort of proves he certainly doesn't have the leadership skills to bring America together, right?

I will be voting for Hillary Clinton in November.

Barack Obama and the DNC have the chance right now, before we have a set ballot, to make my vote count... by putting her name on it.

Don't blame me if the DNC completely ignores my voice now and so I completely ignore them when I vote.
I don't jump for a political party. The way a democracy works, the political party listens to the voters. If the DNC choses not to listen to the voters, so be it; then they deserve to lose those voters.

If the DNC loses this election in November, blame the DNC for hand-picking the candidate who (1) didn't get the most votes; (2) lost the battleground states; and (3) has the thinnest resume of any candidate... and then didn't have the guts to put on the ballot the candidate who (1) got the most votes; (2) won the battleground states; and (3) has the thickest resume of any candidate.

I think the underlying message of this piece to be fair is that the media atren't interested in what candidates have to say they are interested in the horse race. (I think thats why the Democratic Primaries were so compelling mind, because it was a great horse race.)

But as interesting as the VP pick is, we have no idea, especially on the Democratic side, about how accurate the information the media are giving us is. Even the short list we currently have seems to be uncertain (for ages it was just Kaine, Bayh and Biden, now some people add Sebelius' name, some don't??) It might easily be that someone completely differnet is the pick. I thnk we have had enough speculation. Get on with reporting what is happening on the campaign, not waht might be happening.

No.

Just took a shot at the polls. Is not that the Veepstakes are blunting Obama's attacks but Hillary supporters are undermining him. Look at the new Ohio poll, only 77% Democrats supporting Obama. he is winning the independent votes in all categories but the problem is the Democrats. Now am asking what did Obama really do to Hillary Clinton during the primaries? For all I can remember, it was Hillary Clinton attacking Obama to the very end or was it as a result of his supporters? The way i see it, Obama should foget about Ohio and co and concentrate on Colorado,Nevada, Iowa, Virginia and New Mexico. those are his only hopes for victory. What a shame? I thought this was going to be Slam dunk? The way I see it if Obama loses, I see his supporters and blacks coming back in 2012 to pay back the Democrats.

It's really very simple. We trust Hillary. We do NOT trust Obama. Talk is cheap and easy. And he hasn't had enough actions to back to back it up.

Why would anyone think the media would report news, strong messages when gossip and speculation (non news) are much more stylish? Pathetic!!!

It doesn't matter if you trust Hillary. What matters are the policies of the party behind the candidate. This is not a beauty contest! I have to believe these pro -Hillary comments are from GOP operatives. No one else could be so shortsighted and obtuse. Forget about the candidates for a minute and concentrate on the policies.

As far as experience Obama strikes me as someone who will surround himself with the best and brightest minds whereas McCain appears like a puppet to shadowy backroom interests. But hey, I'm the same age as Obama so how could I know anything about the world. I wish I could say "elect your doddering old president and sod off", except America insists on meddling in the affairs of a lot of countries so to some degree he will be my president too. I am not afraid of Democrats and Obama like a lot of people in America, but then again you live in a culture of manufactured fear... time to shift paradigms (after you look up the meaning of the word...)

Posted by: Mike Robinson | Aug 20, 2008 11:59:36 AM

Mike Robinson...You state that Hillary supporters, or comments are GOP operatives, NOT TRUE..perhaps unlike some other countries, WE ARE ALLOWED TO CROSS PARTY LINES..WE LIVE IN A DE-MOC-RA-CY. Some voters feel that HRC shows experience in White House politics and would make a better President than either Obama and McCain; however since HRC was not the nominee we next have to turn to the two candidates available. I prefer government EXPERIENCE and of course policies..Obama is too far left, and I DO NOT TURST THE PEOPLE HE HAS SURROUNDED HIMSELF WITH that would truly hold America first..As far as your insults ie "doddering old president and sod off," which seem to prevail of late within the international community, I can only say ...will actually nothing..I will let your comments speak for themselves and consider the source, others will decide for themselves how to take your insults as this is a de-moc-ra-cy..........
