Jindal Closes the 'Window' on Possible VP Nomination

ABC News' Kate McCarthy reports: Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La., closed the "window" Sunday on if he would accept an invitation to join the Republican ticket this election.

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," Jindal, who is rumored to be on Sen. John McCain’s, R-Ariz., vice presidential short list, said he hopes to run for a second term as governor of Louisiana, instead.

"We’ve already said in private and public we’ve got the job that we want," Jindal said. "I don’t want to be vice president. I’m not going to be the nominee."

When pressed on if he is still leaving a "window" open to accept the nomination, Jindal replied, "No, no, no. No window’s open there."

Jindal was also asked if it would be a mistake for the presumptive Republican nominee to pick a pro-choice running mate, such as former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge. Jindal said people will vote based on who is running for president, not vice president.

"The bottom line is this. Sen. McCain has a pro-life record. He said he will have a pro-life administration," Jindal responded. "As a pro-life voter, I certainly have more confidence in the judges that Sen. McCain will appoint to the Supreme Court."

I am from Louisiana and Bobby Jindal would be an excellent choice! He is young, conservative and is the new blood of the conservative movement!

GOP will never and i say never make Jindal their running mate.
This is because they will lose a key support base of their party.

During Katrina, the nation
saw Mayor Nagin and Governor
Blanco on television.

This twit was nowhere in sight.

I've only heard good things about Jindal----its unfortunate that he won't be the VP. He is confident, but I don't think his age would helped the ticket although he certainly would probably make an excellent vp/president. McCain needs to pick a woman to get the Hiliary dems.

This guy is a worthless snake
oil salesman.

GOP is already dead as far as
GE 2008 goes. He won't add
anything to the ticket at all.

anon,

you clearly know nothing about what has happened in Lousiana since Katrina. Jindal has shown tremendous initiative and leadership.

Bobby Jindal was a Rhodes Scholar. At age 36, Jindal became the youngest current governor in the United States. He also became the first non-white to serve as governor of Louisiana since Reconstruction, the first elected Indian American governor in U.S. history, as well as the second Asian American governor to serve in the continental United States after Gary Locke of Washington.

In his short term so far as governor he has done more than Nagin and Blanco put together. That's why his approval ratings are so high, as a non-white in a state often (unjustly) accused of endemic racism.

Your knee-jerk denigration of a great American is shameful. Shame on you. What have you accomplished in your life that gives you the moral authority to speak so nastily about this man?

For those interested in Jindal, wheck out his bio on wikipedia. I think Louisiana needs him more than the nation needs him as VP, but in 2016 he'd be a great successor to McCain, or if McCain decides not to seek re-election in 2012.

McCain has some pretty lousy choices for VP. The right won't stand for Romney or Ridge or any "choice" candidate. Jindal won't take it, because he won't get offered it, sad to say there is a coloration problem. Lieberman, not a chance. Pawlenty is a horrible choice, adding nothing, can't even help in MN. I was thinking one of those CEO women, HP or EBAY ones, but there is a gender issue, again sad to say. Now we are down to Crist in FL or even Jeb Bush, oh there is that Bush issue, not sad at all. So I guess the best would be Pawlenty, no help but no hurt? Maybe, oh there is that bridge problem.

Obama has more experience then Eisenhower, and Ronald Reagan did. Obama has enough experience regardless of what liars say.
What Obama has that McCain doesn't is judgment. Obama had the right judgment on Iraq. McCain didn't even read the Iraq intelligent report before voting. Do you really want a president like McCain who votes on matters before researching them? Funny thing is is that when Jindal was asked what accomplishments McCain had Jindal couldn't respond.
McCain is basically a third Bush term. McCain has the same health care, social security, Foreign policy and economic policy as Bush. Pretty much exactly the same. I think its time that we change away from the disastrous Bush policies.

He's a clerk, a pencil pusher,
a do-nothing who got elected
by default in the chaos and
disillusionment that enveloped
Louisiana after Katrina.

Recently he would not exercise
his veto when legislators gave
themselves an excessively huge
raise.

So many voters were put off by
his paralysis to act there were
calls for his resignation.

Louisiana ranks at the bottom
in practically every category.
He seems to fit best in that
environment.

Rich - "the right", as you say, would love to have Romney as the VP! Are you kidding?

"MITT ROMNEY IS THE BEST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT. His record of accomplishments is sensational. Harvard Law and MBA cum laude simultaneously, Baker Scholar, created Staples, Timberland, Dominoes Pizza and many more. Was called in to turn Massachusetts into a thriving state and did so working without pay. Begged to save the failing Salt Lakes Olympics and did so brilliantly again refusing compensation. A married man with fine children and spotless record of integrity. He would make a great V.P. for McCain. Only the bigotry of Huckabee and his group of evangelists who disagree with the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, an organization of 13 million Christians in 130 countries whose charitable and humanitarian projects are legend, including Katrina and tsunami relief, not to mention the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir of which Mitt Romney and some 16 members of Congress are members.

This bigotry should be rejected by McCain and Mitt Romney chosen as his running mate. The two great issues that face America today are Foreign policy and Security and the economy. The combination of McCain Romney is irresistable."

Its really does not matter, who Mccain picks at this point..He is even losing in some orginally republic states like Minnesota and Virgina.

Posted by: John | Aug 17, 2008 11:54:05 PM

If this guy runs for national
office, he'll wimp out in a
matter of days.

Posted by: anon | Aug 18, 2008 1:08:26 AM

Now why in the world would a young man like Jindal hitch his wagon to McCain. The kid is smart, he knows a looser when he see one.

Posted by: Sam | Aug 18, 2008 8:03:53 AM

The problem with Romney is that he is pro-choice on abortion, of course he has had multiple positions over the years. I believe he would probably be the best pick for McCain but the radical right won't stand for it. The other problem is that the Democrats will accuse him of buying the VP slot with his promise to bring $50Million with him to the table. So if he was picked the story will be that all those so-called republican values can be easly tossed aside for the big bucks that Romney will bring.

I’m from Louisiana and Jindal is your typical politician; tell you what you want to hear! To me, Jindal seems to be pandering to the national spotlight, rather than doing what's good for Louisiana. For example allowing 90 plus bills to become law without his signature! If it’s good for Louisiana why not put your signature on them? I believe the man has higher goals and his agenda reflects that with veto’s, signed bills and unsigned bills. Jindal also is pandering to the extreme right who don’t believe in less government, they basically want to push their agenda like “Louisiana Science Education Act” down your throat, which he signed! The man has proved he is no conservative by my values with the “creationism bill”, not keeping his word on vetoing the pay raise for legislators and when in Washington representing the taxpayers of Louisiana voting NO for Medicare negotiating directly with the pharmaceutical companies.

The Republicans are playing
this unsavvy politician for
a sucker. When he was first
mentioned as a potential VP,
he did not close the window
then. He started popping up
on talk and news shows. Every
time he appears on tv instead
of improving his chances for
a national role he diminishes
his prospects.

Posted by: anon | Aug 18, 2008 11:36:18 AM

No Jindal, no Jeb Bush. That leaves Mitt Romney and perhaps as a darkhorse Ron Paul or Ralph Nader. Comments?

I can't help but think that Gov Sarah Palin of Alaska is the best choice for McCain. She is conservative enough for the base but cuts into the disafected Hillary supporters who are going to be upset when Senator Obama picks an older lily white male running mate. Palin is the perfect way for McCain to slide into changing his position on drilling in ANWER and that looks to be a winning issue for the Republicans this Fall. I support McCain regardless but I hope to support a McCain/Palin ticket.

I want to see Mr. Jindal as next US President, rather a current VP. You r doing excellent as Governor......keep it up

Posted by: Smith | Aug 19, 2008 3:04:32 PM

Bobby Jindal is young and WELL EXPERIENCED, NOT inexperienced. Just try to compare his resume to Obama's. Just try...

Posted by: Chris | Aug 19, 2008 5:19:36 PM

Do not be fooled. Jindal will be the VP pick for Mccain. And Obama will choose HIllary. I'm head over heel for a Mccain Jindal ticket. I think the two of them together will bring about some good old fashion and impressive fireworks to the whitehouse. All good of course.

obama has judgement hahahahahahahhahahahahhahahah yeah right I mean reveren wright uh william ayers ah ferrakaun hahahhahaha judgement hahaha hahahha

1) McCain is dead in the water already. The GOP should look to 2012.

2) If Obama was REALLY smart, he would pick Chuck Hagel as his running mate and change the face of Amrican politics forever!

BTW, would someone remind McCain the next time he says, "I know how to win a war." We lost Vietnam! Thank you!

My apologies

If Gov. Jindal was just a couple years older he would be an excellent pick, the ideal balance for the GOP ticket. Many other names in speculation won't work out for one reason or another: Romney (flip-flopper), Ridge (pro-choice), Lieberman (caucuses with Democrats). I think Pawlenty or Huckabee would be the best choices.
