John Edwards Releases Statement

Former Sen. John Edwards released a statement today in response to his acknowledgment in an interview wtih ABCNews that he had an extramarital affair:

"In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public. When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.

"I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices, and I had hoped that it would never become public. With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006 and today I take full responsibility publicly. But that misconduct took place for a short period in 2006. It ended then. I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established. I only know that the apparent father has said publicly that he is the father of the baby. I also have not been engaged in any activity of any description that requested, agreed to or supported payments of any kind to the woman or to the apparent father of the baby.

"It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up - feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.

"I have given a complete interview on this matter and having done so, will have nothing more to say."

What Edwards did not answer in his statement is if the affair ended in 2006, the baby is not his, and no money was given to is mistress than why did he see her privately at a hotel in California a few weeks ago? And if Elizabeth Edwards knew about the affair did she know that Edwards saw the woman a few weeks ago? If she did how do you think she reacted?

The affair is over since 2006, the baby is not his....why is he caught by the National Enquirer on July 21 visiting the mistress and baby and leaving the hotel a 2AM? If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....
C'mon John....you're not telling the whole story.

Think if he had actually won the Democratic primaries, or if Obama had announced him as VP.
Yikes

John Edwards, no-one should point the figure at you as all have sinned. It sounds like your family have forgiven you and that we thank God for because God will forgive when you come to him and repent.
May God bless you and your family as you serve people and your God.

The odd thing about the reporting on this is that creepy Bill Cinton's behavior is never mentioned. People bring up FDR and Kennedy. Where's dirty Bill?

It should be investigated further because if this were a republican, this confession wouldn't pass muster.

I know it's a lot to ask, but if the media can go on ad nauseum for weeks about Bill Bennet's gambling, then we can certainly probe further into this.

My God, the guy was being considered for any number of things in an Obama administration.

One by one they all fall... up next Barack it's not a question of if, its a question of when it will be revealed before or after the he is president. I am telling you many men in power just have a hard time keeping their zippers up.

Patriot, Bush did not lie about WMDs.
Every Intelligence agency in the world stated that Saddam had WMD's. Further, documents obtained from Saddam's files now show that Saddam had every intention of restarting his WMD program and would now be in possession of WMD's if President Bush had not called Saddam's bluff, and invaded Iraq. Question, would the world be better off with both Iran and Iraq close to having or in possession of nuclear weapons? The answer is obvious and not only that, the US has not been attacked by Al Qaeda since 9/11 and Al Qaeda is on the run in Iraq. Why not give President Bush some credit for the aforementioned and stop all the crazy babble about impeaching President Bush. The fact is if Obama had his way, Saddam would still be in power in Iraq, Al Qaeda would be on the rise and in position to lead more attacks like 9/11 against the US. Think about it.

That is what I like about the creepy Clinton crowd - always introspective.

It however may have been an Obama plant as it brings up all of the awful crap we went through. The creepy Clintons did not ly to each other, they lied in court and to the American people. THink of others in recent memory who we do not like because of that.

I believe it is important to recognize that this is not a Republican nor a Democrat issue..This could have happen in any party..My thoughts are with Edward's wife, kids and those who put their time, money and trust to his campaign...Seriously Steve NJ enough with the name calling as in RepubLosers..it's so not necessary...I really believe most Republicans would not wish this on Edward's family...at least this Republican

The reason Edward's affair is our business is because he lied to the American people. That makes it our business. Also-we need to know the Character of the people that our children use as role models. So- when people go into politics to govern us, it is our business. I wish him well and forgive him but would not vote for him.

ahhhh, a little more fuel on the fire anyone?????

Posted by: tim | Aug 8, 2008 9:00:48 PM

ruckus...

its hard to explain to certain people why this IS the americans peoples business. just like when the lewinsky thing happened, certain idiots defended him in every possible way. THESE ARE OUR LEADERS!!!! they have to be called out on their mistakes and LIES, personally and privately. while i wish the best for the edwards family and dont believe it should be used for political traction by anyone, it does need to be addressed. he made a big mistake, and again LIED TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE about the events. he needs to be held accountable for lying. it helps to keep the politicians in check.

For years and years, poor minorities in large cities have been voting for dems, who happen to have been in charge of most large cities for years and years and guess what? THESE FOLKS ARE STILL POOR!! I LIVE NEAR CLEVELAND - IT'S A MESS - SOME LEADERS PROBABLY GOING TO JAIL. AND NEARBY DETROIT? IT'S A MESS ALSO - MAYOR WAS SENT TO JAIL. IT HAS SEEMED LIKE OBAMA HAS SPENT MOST OF HIS CAMPAIGN ON DAMAGE CONTROL - AND NOW THE EDWARDS FIASCO. WHERE WILL IT ALL END?

Of all the prominent Democrats I liked Edwards the most. Figures. Really disgusted and disappointed to see him lying about it (and he may not be done yet!)

Also disturbing is how the media's been sitting on this one. A non-story about an alleged McCain affair was drug out from ages ago and brought to the forefront.

I have a difficult time believing that the child is not his, citing the following reasons: 1) He denied this completely when the Enquirer first broke the story, therefore he is a liar. 2) There are PICTURES of him holding the baby while sneaking around with the mistress. 3) He's paying her child support. 4) There is no father's name on the birth certificate. 5) And yes (again) he has no qualms about lying to the cameras . . . so . . . looks like he's using Bill Clinton as a template here to circumvent the consequences; problem is lefty didn't have a love child. On a side note, great job by the left-wing media covering this thing up to protect their precious Democrats. Unbelievable!!

I also want to say shame on all of those people who are saying, "he's human... everyone makes mistakes." Accepting behavior like this in our leaders is not only setting the wrong example for our children, but it is putting this country on a steep moral decline. This is unacceptable behavior. Period.

OK. I gotta ask: Why is he being treated as if he's still a candidate or as if this ensures the end of his political career? Look at McCain or Clinton or Thurmond or Vitter. Did infidelity hurt their careers? This is overblown when there are so many vital issues to cover. Enough already. Thanks.

Sounded like BHO send him a email and text saying that Edward is out of the runnng for VP...hence the timing for Edward's confession...

I think this kind of blows the lid of of what he said, no?
