Kaine Obama's VP Pick? 'I Really Don't Know,' He Said

Share

August 20, 2008 4:29 PM

ABC News' Jennifer Duck reports from Newport News, Va.: Potential Obama vice presidential pick Gov. Tim Kaine is driving all over the state today in what sure looks like a full scale presidential campaign, but his press secretary Gordon Hickey says the governor does these "cabinet day" tours around different cities a few times a year and this has been "long-planned."

Veepbeat_generic_blog_4 That said, the Virginia governor is traveling in a black Chevy Trailblazer while a large bus full of staff trails behind him.

At his most recent stop, number three of five, Kaine was addressed with a big smile as the "future vice president" by Commissioner Mike Kuzma.

Kuzma told ABC News after the event, "I had a crystal ball but I dropped it on the way here ... I don't know if he will get it," he said of Obama's vice-presidential slot, "but I hope he does."

Mayor Joe Frank of Newport News, Virginia introduced the governor to a group of senior citizens, predicting with a smile Kaine may get the call at any time.

"I offered to hold his phone while he was speaking," the town mayor said. "He told me it wasn't necessary. So if all the sudden he stops talking we should understand."

Kaine was caught, off camera, whispering to one official at the event saying, "I really don't know" who Obama will choose.

Asked directly by reporters for the second time today if he received a call from Obama, Kaine dodged saying that's "for the Obama campaign to announce."

When asked earlier in the day if he had spoken to Obama, Kaine said "I'm going to leave the speculators to speculate."

The attention by fellow Virginians lobbying for him to have the role of vice president was very apparent but Kaine brushed it off saying, "I think they are loving the excitement."

UPDATE: Kaine refused to confirm a Politico report that Obama is staying the night tonight at the Virginia governor's mansion.

"I'm not going to talk about my interactions with the campaign," Kaine said with a coy smile before he ducked into his car. However Obama's spokeswoman Jen Psaki told ABC News' Sunlen Miller that Obama would be staying in a Virginia hotel tonight.

Obama probably doesn't even know himself. He cannot make a decision.

Posted by: geevill | Aug 20, 2008 4:33:39 PM

McCain talks about selecting a "pro-choicer" and there is talk about the party imploding. Obama considers an inexperienced, "anti-choice" candidate (Kaine) and nobody says anything. What is wrong with this picture? Where are the party activists to say "no way, no how"? So much for "liberals" controlling the Democratic party.

I think we'll know Friday, when the Obama campaign said we'll know.

Nobody is pro-abortion. It's a nasty business indeed. But it doesn't matter if a candidate is pro-choice or pro-life - Roe v. Wade isn't going away. Not even Bush in his 8 years and all the conservative Supreme Court Justices could make a difference. You can't legislate morality. A woman has to decide for herself whether to have a child - the President, the Vice President and the Supreme Court cannot decide for her - and making it illegal won't make it go away either. It's sad, for certain. But woman have got to control their own behavior and try to prevent conception if they are not ready for child-rearing. It's basically that simple.

The USS Obama Titanic keeps lumbering along. Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, George Soros and the other unrepetent terrorists, America-haters, racists and felons that Obama has partnered with the last 20 years are enjoying drinks on the deck, laughing and speculating about what will be on the menu for their first dinner in the White House.

But there is an iceberg ahead.

After November, when people talk about colossal failures, they will mention the movies “Ishtar” and “Heaven’s Gate” – and the Obama campaign.

Geevil:

And even if he does make a decision by this weekend, he will change his mind all over again at least four or five times between now and the end of the convention next week.

Posted by: SandyB | Aug 20, 2008 4:52:51 PM

geecee - you did make a key point. Outlawing abortion (or more precisely, giving states the option to do that) will just set up a black market for abortions. And that will come with all the horrors we experienced before in the "back alleys."

You also are certainly correct that the solution is to avoid conception until ready. However, history also tells us that isn't going to happen.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 20, 2008 4:55:12 PM

McCain should pick someone his equal in brains and ability. Someone like Gov. William J. LePeomaine. ;-)

Posted by: EdDoc | Aug 20, 2008 5:08:50 PM

Actually I know both picks, but just don't want to tell you guys.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 20, 2008 5:09:39 PM

Given Obama's past history, chances are he will announce his VP pick and then see what the polls say. He will then continue to switch his choice until he finds someone the pollsters say will help him win.

Sadly, that person will be Hillary Clinton.

" She pointed out that McCain reacted too quickly with "aggressive and bellicose" rhetoric on the Russia-Georgia crisis, and contrasted that with Obama's measured response to the dust-up."

Are you kidding me??? McCain could answer DECISIVELY because he understand the Georgia conflict, and Russia's ambitions.

Obama kept having to guess at what to say until FINALLY he reached McCain's position.

And they are using this as an example of why Obama is better??? LOL

Bhrandon:

Uhhh....no.....mmmmm.....The moron is the one who claims the answer to a vital question on a vital issue in a presidential campaign is:
uh, uh, uh, "Above my pay grade" uhh...duh...mmmm.....

Posted by: SandyB | Aug 20, 2008 5:21:16 PM

Interesting to note Ralph Nader said that McCain destroyed Obama at Saddleback.

I bet Nader is also tired of seeing a candidate REFUSE to debate and REFUSE to take determinate positions that he won't switch every other week.

Who is Barack Obama?? 1 year and we still don't know. The Barack Obama of today is VERY VERY different than the Barack Obama of 1 year ago. Where will he be in 3 months? 6 months?

Posted by: JA | Aug 20, 2008 5:24:54 PM

Barack Obama of 2007:
- I will aggressively pursue a publicly financed campaign.
- I will meet without preconditions leaders of rogue nations
- I will NOT drill, I am an environmentalist to the core
- I am the most radical pro choicer in Senate, and support partial birth abortions gone awry to be carried through to completion.

Barack Obama of 2008:
- I will not agree to a publicly financed campaign
- I will meet with leaders of rogue nations with "preparations" (??). ok, I wouldn't meet with Ahmenijad himself.
- OK, maybe I'd drill.
- Regarding abortion rights......give me a few more weeks, I need to see what the polls say.

Vital issue? Please! Non-issue is more like it.

Posted by: Llama in Pajama's | Aug 20, 2008 5:29:19 PM

If you love Senator Barack Obama enough to join his fan club you'll love higher taxes, massive federal spending, government-run health care and higher gas prices. Despite Senator Obama's lack of experience and readiness to lead, he's still considered dreamy and deserves an amazing fan club - he just doesn't deserve to be our next president.

Empty Slogans are for Kool Aid drinkers

JA,

Do you get paid to lie, or just do it for fun? Sad and pathetic little troll.

BTW - McCain supports brining back the draft. Said so today. Hope your friends and family are the first to go!

Posted by: Llama in Pajama's | Aug 20, 2008 5:31:31 PM

Oh he will reintroduce the draft, but the kids of those making $5,000,0000 a year or more will be exempt. Can't have the future of America wasted in a war.

Posted by: Thinking | Aug 20, 2008 5:32:29 PM

mccain's own kids are in iraq.....says more about his character as opposed to that of dubya....

Posted by: chris | Aug 20, 2008 5:33:57 PM

without Hillary, obama will not win....with her, he has a chance....

Posted by: chris | Aug 20, 2008 5:34:48 PM

McCain doesn't even know who is fighting who in the Middle East. All he wants is war, war, war! Is that what we want for our children? I don't. I want good schools, affordable healthcare, and secure, good paying jobs. The Republicans don't give a hoot about regular Americans and you fools who buy into their propoganda are being used. Just say no to McCain!

STOP REPUBLICAN CORRUPTION !

vote DEMOCRATS FOR 2008 !

Posted by: voter | Aug 20, 2008 5:59:26 PM

chris,

Nice try, but do you realize the level of hatred the Repubs have for Hillary and Bill? Add that to the half of the Dem party who distrust her.

Posted by: Llama in Pajama's | Aug 20, 2008 6:00:30 PM

Today McCain was asked at a town-hall meeting if he was preparing to choose a pro-choice running mate. After several sentences reiterating his OWN position on the subject, he explained to the poor woman that the job of a VP is to break ties in the Senate. Not exactly "No ma'am, my VP will be as pro-life as I am," now, is it.

And by the way, geevil, I think the difference is that Obama's "anti-choice" VP wouldn't be a heartbeat away from a 72 year-old cancer survivor.

Posted by: Republicans Hate America | Aug 20, 2008 6:02:42 PM

It's really very simple: Were Obama to choose Hillary Clinton as his VP, the election would be a landslide victory for Obama/Clinton.
However, I don't think he will choose her for several reasons:
1. He doesn't want to be upstaged. I think a lot of people would be more interested in Clinton's take on a given policy decision rather than Obama's.
2. Obama's pride is in the way of his choosing her.
3. He might be criticized for resorting to politicians of the "old school" (incidentally, I believe the force of his "new kind of politics" has worn off and we now see him for what he is - just another typical politician).

Posted by: JA | Aug 20, 2008 6:09:17 PM

llama....their hatred is so great, they are unable to beat the Clintons, despite their worst efforts....

Posted by: chris | Aug 20, 2008 6:11:11 PM

I know who McCain & Obama's vice president choices will be.

Posted by: Anders Scooper | Aug 20, 2008 6:12:39 PM

I hope Obama chooses Biden. lol

http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NGRhNzJlMWY5NjdiNzhjMTRkYjMzNjYwOGJmYzNjMTY=

Biden appearing on The Daily Show, August 2, 2005: “John McCain is a personal friend, a great friend, and I would be honored to run with or against John McCain, because I think the country would be better off, be well off no matter who...”

On Meet the Press, November 27, 2005: “I’ve been calling for more troops for over two years, along with John McCain and others subsequent to my saying that.”

Assessing Obama’s Iraq plan on September 13, 2007: “My impression is [Obama] thinks that if we leave, somehow the Iraqis are going to have an epiphany” of peaceful coexistence among warring sects. “I’ve seen zero evidence of that.”

Posted by: JA | Aug 20, 2008 6:18:42 PM

Speaking to the New York Observer: Biden was equally skeptical — albeit in a slightly more backhanded way — about Mr. Obama. “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

December 11, 2007: “If Iowans believe campaign funds and celebrity will fix the debacle in Iraq, put the economy on track, and provide health care and education for America’s children, they should support another candidate,” said Biden for President Campaign Manager Luis Navarro. “But I’m confident that Iowans know what I know: our problems will require experience and leadership from Day One. Empty slogans will be no match for proven action on caucus night.”

Posted by: JA | Aug 20, 2008 6:20:23 PM

Obama will probably pick Scratch Coconut and John McCain will likely pick Onnie Grayback.

Posted by: Anders Scooper | Aug 20, 2008 6:20:52 PM

These are just too good:

Also that night, Biden said in a campaign ad, “When this campaign is over, political slogans like ‘experience’ and ‘change’ will mean absolutely nothing. The next president has to act.”

September 26, 2007: Biden for President Campaign Manager Luis Navarro said, “Sen. Obama said he would do everything possible to end the war in Iraq and emphasized the need for a political solution yet he failed to show up to vote for Sen. Biden’s critical amendment to provide a political solution in Iraq.

Posted by: JA | Aug 20, 2008 6:21:25 PM

We are NOT accepting Sen. Obama just because 'they' slap a democratic label on him to represent us in the White House. He doesn't represent us, or grassroots Americans. He represents elitism, class warfare, demagoguery, race-baiting, ageism and misogyny. That's his vision for America and the Democratic Party, not ours.
We will vote for Senator McCain and help defeat what we believe is evil in our midst and send a message loud and clear that we will be heard and we will not tolerate bigotry, separatism and everything else Obama clearly stands for.

Posted by: sal | Aug 20, 2008 6:24:52 PM

It's a sad year in politics. There are no choices.

Posted by: Anders Scooper | Aug 20, 2008 6:26:43 PM

Obama is going to lose Michigan. One of the key top four or seven states.

For a few reasons, he wanted to disenfranchise the votes, until he thought he had the nomination secured. He tried to strong arm the auto industries with a tough mandate to raise mileage on vehicles to pander for votes.

the list goes on and on, but here in Michigan, I work for the auto industry in metro Detroit, and no one wants Obama, and with his buddy Kilpatrick, that doesn't help matters.

you can pretty much kiss Michigan goodbye, Blobama supporters.

ps, I'm working overtime in my senior citizen complexes here in west metro suburban Detroit. I've convinced thousands of seniors already to vote against Blobama. I'll keep going tirelessly until November.

MICHIGANS AGAINST BLOBAMA 08!

What an idiot! I am here in MI too and don't know where YOU hang out, BUT Oakland County will be going for Obama. John McCain keeps saying stupid things when he comes to MI.

Interesting that you need to work two jobs.

Posted by: Llama in Pajama's | Aug 20, 2008 6:34:24 PM

No candidate is discussing the flying saucer problem. These things are seen everywhere and almost no political candidate is addressing this problem. If the US could capture a saucer it could give us the answer to the energy crisis. This would excite the people and cause them to vote.

Posted by: Anders Scooper | Aug 20, 2008 6:37:48 PM

Obama will not be our next president. Give it up.

Gallup Daily: Obama Up 45% to 43%

GEE WHAT A HUGE LEAD FOR OBAMA!

Posted by: Samantha | Aug 20, 2008 6:48:57 PM

The candidates are not explaining thier policies in detail, such as, if pets are considered a part of the family would they be covered under the healthcare plans of the candidates?

Posted by: Anders Scooper | Aug 20, 2008 6:49:26 PM

Obama will announce who it is, it will be someone who can get him votes.

Not someone who can do anything or worth something,

Just someone who can get Obama votes.

Posted by: seah | Aug 20, 2008 7:02:38 PM

Which words best describe a real leader?

(1) We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

(2) The buck stops here.

(3) Damn the torpedos and full speed ahead.

(4) That's above my pay grade.

Posted by: Martin Slueg | Aug 20, 2008 7:08:52 PM

Sandy...If you had listened to Obama's full and entire answer, maybe you would understand his response. But as usual, the little snippits are all you see and repeat. Like Mcain's answer to what you consider wealthy? Oh anything over 5 mil...But then considering what the Bush administration has done over the last 8 years, I shouldn't be surprised that Mcain thinks he's above everyone else. And can play God with our lives and bodies.I cheated, well not really, we were living together, but separated..I told Cindy I was younger so she would like me. Like I want this guy telling me what to do.

He can't do it without Hillary.

SHE IS THE ONE WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED - But, we are where we are....the ONLY choice is Clinton as VP.

Its apparent that after the forum this weekend that Obama cannot speak without a teleprompter or speech written by Axelrod. McCain will shred Obama in the debates, that is, if Obama is the nominee. If Hillary is the nominee, then McCain will have his hands full. I can't BELIEVE the DNC will allow this flake, Obama, to be their nominee....I hope and pray that Hillary wins it somehow.

As far as VP picks....Obama will choose one, then if he continues to sink in the polls as he is doing, he will flip-flop and say he meant to say someone else. It will be ok, cuz the DNC and the Obamabots are so full of Obamaberry Kool Aid!

Face it, Obama is falling in the polls and is basically toast! He needs Hillary....after all, the Convention IS about Hillary this year....remember? Obama, who?

Not WRIGHT for America makes a pretty compelling case that Obama's pick will be Tim Kaine, because that buzz about a month ago on Kaine was a trial balloon, and since the far left did not freak out about Kaine's moderate credentials, Obama will go with him. We'll see...

Posted by: Gypsy Man | Aug 21, 2008 10:19:33 AM

It's unbelievable how much ignorance, prejiduce and hatred are shared in these comments. Obama will make a great president. The reason he has fallen in the polls is because of McCain's unrelentless lies and attack adds which he swore months ago he would not have in his campaign. Obama now needs to give it back to McCain twofold. He didn't start... McCain did. It's obvious the American people can't vote on positives, they need the to see all the negatives in people. As far as the Saddleback church debate... McCain played to the crowd. He gave answers that he knew would be popular with the audience. Obama tried to be honest and answered each question without attempting to give the answer the audience wanted to hear like McCain did.
