Kaine on McCain's House Gaffe: "He Couldn't Count High Enough"

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Hope Ditto report: Obama V.P. prospect and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine mocked Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Thursday for not knowing exactly how many houses he owns.

"I understand that Sen. McCain was asked yesterday this question, 'how many houses do you own?,' and he couldn't answer that question. He couldn’t count high enough apparently to even know how many houses he owns," said Kaine.

Time Magazine's The Page has the video. Watch it here.

Kaine, who made his remarks on CNN's "American Morning," was referring to an interview that the presumptive Republican nominee gave to Politico on Wednesday when the Arizona senator was uncertain how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own.

"I think -- I'll have my staff get to you," McCain told Politico in Las Cruces, N.M. "It's condominiums where -- I'll have them get to you."

The correct answer, McCain's staff told Politico, is at least four, located in Arizona, California and Virginia. Newsweek estimated this summer that the potential first couple owns at least seven properties.

UPDATE I: McCain Camp Counterpunches with Rezko:

While campaigning in Virginia on Thursday, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., joined Kaine in mocking McCain for not knowing how many houses he owned.

Read a full report from ABC's Jake Tapper.

The McCain campaign responded to Obama's criticism by invoking, among other things, his ties to convicted land developer Tony Rezko as well as the handsome sum he made last year from book sales.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" asked McCain spokesman Brian Rogers. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?"

"The reality," he added, "is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans."

UPDATE II: Obama Ad Hits McCain on His 7 Houses:

Quickly seizing on McCain's Politico interview in which he did not know how many houses he owns, the Obama campaign launched a national cable television ad on Thursday which brings up the Arizona senator's recent gaffe, identfies him as owning 7 houses, and paints him as being out of touch with the country's economic struggles.

Hello???? Anybody home???? Being rich, wearing 500 dollar shoes, and owning multiple homes DOESNT make someone ELITIST. Elitist is a (My sh!!t dont stink, and I know better than you) attitude, aka Barack Hussein Obama syndrome. IN case you arent aware,We live in a society where, we can all become rich. John McCain sacrificed time and again for this country. If he wants to have 10 homes , why not?

Mike,
Bob Hope was a great American entertainer and humanitarian. I still miss the man to this day. He did not have the codes to the nuclear missles and had no authority to make war (declared or otherwise) on anyone. As the President McCain would have this power. As a resident of Georgia (USA) I would personally be scared enough to moe to Alabama if he were elected out of fear that the man might decide to invade Georgia and bomb Atlanta. I am serious, the man is one step away from Alzheimers.

@truthtell Don't forget the majority in congress. THEY are Democrat. You can't simply blame a political party for problems the country has. The problems are way too complex to just have them boil down to "The Republicans did it". All government & people in this country are to blame. Mortgage crisis for example, W. didn't do it to us, we did it. People who make 30k a year buy 300k houses did it. People should know better than that, we need to have some personal responsibility.

"Hit" McCain with the fact that he's successful and his wife comes from a successful family? Just how is it the moonbats figure Americans will see that as a bad thing?

Posted by: Stan | Aug 21, 2008 10:07:16 AM

Hey Ted, being elitist is not the same as being successful...

ROTFL!
He is like SO old!
And Obama is for CHANGE!

Interesting debate.

I wonder how many houses John Kerry owns? Good thing he lost, certainly would not want a man in the WH who married into a multimillion dollar fortune.

Kaine cannot count how high is state's budget deficit is.

Posted by: papajohn | Aug 21, 2008 10:07:44 AM

McCain has just commented - "At least I know how many states there are."

Posted by: sam | Aug 21, 2008 10:07:46 AM

President Obama - isn't he the one who hadn't visited all of the 57 states yet?

Posted by: Doc | Aug 21, 2008 10:07:50 AM

Mike - doesn't make you look too intelliGENT yourself when you can't even spell the word right.....the Obama supporters are getting nervous....

Posted by: Deb | Aug 21, 2008 10:07:57 AM

and let's not forget that Obama couldn't count how many states we have in the U.S. LOL!

Since when is a person married to an heiress not knowing how many houses they own a gaffe?

Why hasn't O'Bamma been required to answer how many tennaments he owns in Chicago or how many mansions on Martha's Vinyard?

It's the height of stupid to suggest that people of means have an exact count on holdings at the tip of their tongue. I know how many houses =I= have, but I only own and need one. If I were a real estate investor, I might have "20 or 23 -- some closed last week, I don't know". In McCain's case, the fact that some were condos may explain the "gaffe". Condos are sometimes thought of as "houses" when in fact they can also be "houses with apartments". He was probably trying to figure out how best to answer the question in an accurate way.

And of course, since it's not an issue for O'Bamma to disclose his vast real estate holdings, how many houses McCain or any other millionair owns is really irrelevant.

Unless that's the best Politico can do for a "Gotcha"

Everyone of you liberals are ridiculous.
Electing Obama is equal to promoting a Mcdonalds fry guy to CEO. It makes no
sense. That is why he will not win, maybe in 8 years.

THe election is getting closer and the poles are narrowing for wonderboy Obama.
So now, let's start spinning about McCain and his homes, etc. What about Obama and his association with billionaires that practically own him.
What about that? No not for the democratic's last hope.

Posted by: KATHY | Aug 21, 2008 10:08:13 AM

In his defense, the homes are more than likely Cindy's and what husband keeps up with his wifes pirchases.

Posted by: jenny | Aug 21, 2008 10:08:19 AM

Its funny how Obama does not even know how many states there are in the union. He said (57)*. Now they have to reach and find what ever they can on McCain like houses. Who cares what he has. He earned money and bought them. Did anyone question John Kerry and what his billionaire wife and he owned? Obama is history and he knows it. He does not have a clue what this country needs. Even his own wife has shut up because she can't even say the right things. She has to appear on the view where they ask her Barbie questions.
