McCain Calls for 'Economic Surge'
August 06, 2008 3:52 PM
ABC News' Bret Hovell reports: John McCain called for an "economic surge" Wednesday, marrying key language from the war in Iraq with the economic troubles facing the United States.
"Our surge has succeeded in Iraq militarily, now we need an economic surge," Sen. McCain said at a cabinet maker in Southeastern Ohio, "to keep jobs here at home and create new ones."
It was the first time he used the term surge in concert with his economic plans, but it does not mark a shift in those plans. It's more of a re-branding effort.
"Most Americans identify the surge as taking resources and putting them where they’re needed for success," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.
"This is a concept that we feel like we can replicate," Bounds said.
In past months identifying a new policy with the war in Iraq would have been politically dicey territory for any candidate. McCain’s willingness to appropriate language specific to the war in Iraq for a domestic policy item seems an overt demonstration of his campaign's confidence in the situation on the ground in that country.
In mid-July, McCain went from saying that the surge in Iraq is "succeeding" to saying that it had "succeeded." That change seemed spontaneous and was described by aides at the time as McCain's own decision after thinking about the progress that had been made.

Mack, just think how we can stick it to the Chinese and others by not buying it.
Is moving away from petroleum within our technological ability? Hopefully so, because someday - maybe 20 years, maybe 100 years, I don't know - we'll be forced to do without it altogether. We should accelerate our development of technologies that will enable the shift.
The sooner we do, the better off we'll be, both economically and strategically (not to mention environmentally).
And my guess is we can make real headway doing this before any new oil rigs ever produce a drop.

"Economic Surge"??? Now that's a plan...when do we start "bombing" the economy then?
This goes a long way to prove McCain's ignorance when it comes to the economy and his military narrow minded approach for everything.

What is wrong with this guy. He is stuck on "surge". We need to surge some of this enormous debt we have accumulated into liquidation with a recession.

McSame is a loser....look at what was reported today about his non participant in the votes:
"The idea of forcing Congress to deal with energy issues could open the Arizona senator to charges of hypocrisy. The liberal-leaning League of Conservation Voters gave McCain a "zero" rating for 2007, saying he had missed all 11 votes related to such critical energy topics as automobile fuel economy, offshore Virginia drilling, refinery construction, renewable electricity mandates, energy efficiency, liquefied coal, support for biofuels." By BETH FOUHY.
Say no more...President Obama.

The Original Johnny Mac - well, I have to disagree. This "proposal" by McCain is trite and meaningless, but it doesn't really demonstrate his ignorance.
Don't get me wrong. McCain has frequently demonstrated ignorance in his statements. But I think this one is more gimmicky than ignorant.

A sure way not to improve our economic situation: Bombing Iran.

I guess the McCain supporters are trying to figure out a way to spin this one. My guess is they'll soon give up and just go back to making their broad, sweeping, anti-Obama statements.

For CAIN everything is about WAR. He is a war lover, a money lover, a deceiver and a lier.
He preaches to the poor while wearing $520 shoes and living like the commoner in his 9 houses.
Let's all go to War with CAIN, get drunk buying his bear and go to hell in the process. CAIN will save US all!
CAIN deceive his brother, CAIN is the deceiver.

Ron Paul needs to slap McCain silly for this continued silliness.

Sally - I'm actually looking forward to coverage of the GOP convention, just to see how much oxygen Ron Paul steals from the show.
Posted by: Paul | Aug 6, 2008 4:55:51 PM
Paul - Me too. Wish I could be part of the fun.
Posted by: Sally | Aug 6, 2008 4:59:50 PM
Paul,
We want Hillary's votes be counted at the Convention, and we do not want to give those votes to 0-bama. We will defend it at all costs.

I guess when the Obama camp mocks this "Economic Surge", the McCain camp will say that Obama is willing to lose the war both on terror and the economy.
McCain sounds more and more like W very day. His proposals, ideas, and ads sound like they've been brainstormed by a bunch of drunk rednecks at a Texas Icehouse.

If you do not support drilling because you want to save the resources for future, more productive use, I am 100% for it and support it.
If you claim that you do not want drilling because it does not lower gasoline price, it is simply a sorry, phony excuse and you have no clue about economy.

McCain calls for an economic surge? I doubt he can even spell the word "economic" let alone know how to define it. This strategy coming from the same guy who admitted to the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board that he knows very little about how the economy works. Makes sense though, his wife (Miss Buffalo Chip McCain), handles all the money in the McCain household so John doesn't have to worry about those annoying little details like paying the property taxes on their California mansion.

Katie Said: "There's a Chinese oil rig drilling off the coast of Florida right now - it's based in Cuba. More are coming soon. Are we really gonna let the Chinese drill up our own oil and sell it back to us at a profit?
Get real, people. "
There are 3 things wrong with this false claim.
1. It is not true.
2. Even if China did have an oil rig in Cuba, it would be Cuba's oil they would be pumping, not ours.
3. The whole offshore drilling noise is a non-issue anyway. Even if the congress lifted their ban, it would still be up to the individual states to decide if it would be allowed, and both California and Florida have made it very clear they would not allow it to happen.

Pity. He needs to be more exposed.

Katie and Mack say: "There's a Chinese oil rig drilling off the coast of Florida right now - it's based in Cuba. More are coming soon. Are we really gonna let the Chinese drill up our own oil and sell it back to us at a profit?"
But Katie and Mack just repeating Republican lies.
Factcheck.org says:
Q: Are the Chinese drilling off the coast of Cuba?
A: No. George Will and Vice President Cheney got that wrong.
Cuba has only allowed exploration in the region, not drilling, and not to Chinese companies. China has entered a deal to drill *onshore* in Cuba, west of Havana--not "our own oil" by any stretch of the imagination.
And in fact, Cheney's office recanted the earlier claim:
Associated Press Online: Cheney's office said in a statement to The Associated Press that the vice president had erred. "It is our understanding that, although Cuba has leased out exploration blocks 60 miles off the coast of southern Florida, which is closer than American firms are allowed to operate in that area, no Chinese firm is drilling there."
Despite the clarification from Cheney and George Will (the original source) Republicans like Katie and Mack keep repeating this false scare point. Are they being dishonest or are they just ignorant?
