McCain Campaign: New Ad Is Just a Bit of Fun

Share

August 01, 2008 7:40 PM

ABC News’s Bret Hovell reports: John McCain said the new web ad his campaign released Friday is just an effort to inject some humor into the campaign.

"We were having some fun," McCain told reporters in Panama City, FL, about the ad which draws messianic comparisons between Obama and Moses. "We were having some fun with our supporters that we sent it out to and we're gonna display a sense of humor in this campaign."

McCain stood by his commitment to keep the campaign a respectful one, brushing off questions as to whether Friday’s ad, and one earlier in the week comparing Obama to a celebrity in the vein of Paris Hilton or Britney Spears, muddied those waters.

"This is a very respectful campaign," McCain said. "I've repeated my admiration and respect for Senator Obama...I don’t think our campaign is negative in the slightest. I'm, we think it’s got a lot of humor in it and we’re having fun and enjoying it. And that is what campaigns are going to be like."

McCain was also given an opportunity to respond to comments is campaign manager, Rick Davis, made Thursday, when he said that Obama had injected race into the presidential campaign.

McCain agreed that Obama had played the "race card," when Obama said that McCain's campaign was trying to "scare [voters] about me. They’re going to try to say that I'm a risky guy, they're going to try to say, 'Well you know he's got a funny name and he doesn't look like all the presidents on the dollar bills.'"

"I think his comments were clearly, were clearly the race card because of what he said," McCain said. "Everybody can read his remarks."

Mccain's opposition did not accuse im, or his campaign of being racist. but has any ne seen the e-mails flying about the internet. tell me that they are not racist, misinforming, plane junk facts, mis leading statements...yes, some republicans are busy playing the RACE, FEAR, FUNNY NAME, NON AMERICAN. and then, there is fox news.

This must be fun for an old fart. I smiled for half a second and sent Obama another $25.

SarahNJ, I love how you try to slam "paid obama bloggers" yet you are the only person to comment on this thread three times.

You must be working out of McCains nursing home.

I'm sure McCain knows that racism is essential if he is going to win the election.

Try to deny it.

Actually WE PAY the Obama campaign ...

You guys have a better deal, maybe!

I fully realize the intent of this ad. I fully realize John McCains comments about the ad. He always does something like this or similar. Or "didn't do." Voters are starting to realize just who he is and what he stands for.

Folks get ready - Karl Rove Playbook" is playing already. And Karl is getting nice consultation fee as well. Check out Freedom Watch. The "Witch Hunters Group" and their backing of super rich are active. Republicans did it 2004 and 2000. John McCain himself was a victim. Now at least two of the same are on his side this time. All will get worse!!

I have no further comments.

Go Obama!! He is not stooping to their level!!

From a Republican

Moses and Obama? That's suppose to be satire? I'm not laughing.

I would think a presidential candidate would have better campaign ads. No offense to John McCain, but comparing Barack Obama to Lindsy Lohan or Moses doesn't really work. I mean, what does that say about him? He's cool and wanted like a celebrity and wise like a bible prophet? Not the message I would be sending! Convince undecideds like me instead why I should give you a voting chance.

The ad is similar in styling to the fake Bush State of the Union Address on You Tube.

McCain is looking desperate these days and a little weird too.

To Vanessa; why don't you ask Barack why, when ALL Americans are suffering with high gas prices and a sputtering economy, he went on VACATION with all of his Dhimmicrat cronies.

Geez, It's funny how people are tuning out to the truth but will harp on a jab. Don't you think Obama's stunt to go to the middle east was clearly a jab at McCain? He never wanted to go over before, now he does because WHY? He should have gone before to "understand" the situation. Hello........
I am a McCain supporter. Those of you who want change are looking to Obama yet changing parties is not how to change for the better. McCain is no McBush as prior suggested...Read your issues and beliefs posted by him. He is for change, a change that will support us, not put a temporary bandage on things.

This ad is funny but I am voting for Obama.

Mr. McCain ... I see you trying so hard to get traction it is painful. I am willing to help. Ready? Right now when I think of you all I think about is 100 year war ... fair or not it is what it is ... When I think of rudy guillian all I think about is September 11th September 11th Was on terror ... Global war on terror... You want traction Mr. McCain ? You want some Ron Paul supporters in your camp? Start talking inflation. And I do not mean the result of inflation but the cause of higher prices, inflation. Understand and speak to inflation every chance you get and you take control of a major talking point important to all Americans. The purchasing power of their currency. Address inflation, doing away with Mr. Paulson. Sound money and the White House is yours in a cake walk. Inflation Mr. McCain. Can we make that compromise ? You gives us sound money we give you the White House. How bad do you want it? We are willing to give you what you want if you give us what we want. Sound money. Inflation Mr. McCain. Make it your talking point.

To Jordan;

Obama's not the president of the United States right now. If your not happy with the way things are going. Maybe it's time for some change?

Posted by: SADY | Aug 1, 2008 9:09:49 PM

The respect I had for McCain has completely vanished now. I was leaning towards Obama but now I am sure I will vote for change and not for a wannabe comedian wanting to sit in the oval office. Pathetic!

When I see how close the race is and that so many americans support McCain, in a twisted way I hope McCain does win. Then just sit back and watch McCain stumble around like a bizarre shorted out robot, embarrassing himself and this country around the world. Then 2 years into his term, with this country and economy in worst shape, McCain and his fellow republicans will still look to try and blame Obama for their mess. "If only Obama never ran for office, we would never be in this bad position!".

Jordan

that's funny since mccain has missed more of his duties in the senate than Obama has.

so stop

Posted by: dl | Aug 1, 2008 9:12:07 PM

McCain is being very badly underestimated. He realizes the importance of keeping himself in the public eye, and this ad has done in it spades.

dc

I would love to be able to do that...I really would but after 8 years I worry about the next generation and the generation after that if McCain takes us on this hawkish self indulgent trip that has gotten this far down into the mouth of the volvcano...

He may not have noticed he's busy planning fart jokes for his first UN speech...

these ads are the level of "let them eat cake while I spend campaign funds on a funny joke" "the next one I think we'll intercut Obama's children on wife swap"

oh yeah I am gonna get the respect back of the US now... let me tell you.

Posted by: dl | Aug 1, 2008 9:18:32 PM

Well, I think Obama is clearly what this country doesn't need. I haven't figured out who he really is, but I don't want to be three years into a disaster presidency to find out. John McCain is a known. I like.
