McCain Endorsed by Latin Star Daddy Yankee

Share

August 25, 2008 12:47 PM

ABC News' Bret Hovell Reports: While making an appearance on Monday at the high school alma mater of his wife Cindy, John McCain received the endorsement of Reggaeton star Daddy Yankee.

Daddy Yankee, whose real name is Ramon Ayala, is a Latin Grammy winner. He is known mostly for his song "Gasolina," which, according to several translations of the Spanish lyrics and interpretations of the Spanish slang, is not particularly family-friendly, and has absolutely nothing to do with energy independence.

As excited as the roughly 100 high school students were to see the 71-year-old presumptive Republican nominee, when Ayala walked into the room, most the young women in the room started shrieking. Ayala gave hugs and shook hands before making the endorsement official.

"I'm here endorsing Senator McCain because I believe in his ideals and his proposals to lead this nation, you know?" Daddy Yankee said at Phoenix's Central High School.

McCain met with Daddy Yankee at his campaign headquarters on Aug. 2. At that time, Daddy Yankee said he didn't know whether or not he was going to endorse McCain, but he has since come to a conclusion.

The event at the high school was originally billed as a press conference by the campaign. In fact there was no give and take between the media and either McCain or Daddy Yankee. McCain has not spoken with reporters since Aug. 13.

UPDATE: Daddy Yankee, however, did say hi to reporters on board McCain’s press plane soon after the event. He said that he met McCain two years ago after each was named one of Time Magazine’s most influential people “on earth.”

“I was glad to meet him two years ago and since then we’ve been very cool,” Ayala said.

He was asked if he thought McCain listened to his music, and said that he believed McCain’s daughter Meghan did.

Ayala was also asked what his song “Gasolina” was about. With a smile and a laugh, he was right on message.

“It’s about energy independence,” Ayala said.

Oh, Ludacris is a gangsta' rapper but Daddy Yankee whose RAP lyrics are equally misogynistic and violent is a "Latin star"? This is a blatant double standard! Why does McCain get a pass and Obama get branded by the MSM? Becaue he's old? White?

Posted by: Dawn | Aug 25, 2008 12:56:07 PM

Dawn: Obviously you do not understand Daddy Yankee's lyrics. You are comparing apples and oranges. Look for Daddy Yankee's history not only in music but in voluntary services and donations and then talk.

Posted by: Definitely Common Sense | Aug 25, 2008 1:03:31 PM

Okay, Daddy Yankee just made me change my mind. I'll vote for McCain now.

“Barack Obama has the capacity to hit,” Jackson said a breakfast panel just before the opening of the Democratic National Convention. “But he is in the situation where he can’t hit back, which Jackie Robinson could not do. … He had to be able to run the bases, even though the crowd was jeering the first African American on the field.”

Barack Hussein Obama - you're no Jackie Robinson!!

watch Mccain flip flop and change his mind on immigration and daddy yankee will be saying daddy bye bye, him along with his friend.

Posted by: who | Aug 25, 2008 1:18:00 PM

wow.. Daddy Yankee! This is such huge news. You reporters are pathetic. This is the best you can do by the salary you get paid (that was rhetorical, in case you are too ignorant to get it).. write insignifcant endorsment news. And then you will complain that the candidates aren't stating their platform. .The fact is that while you are writing this dribble, Obama is on the stump talking about his platform. While you are wasting reader's time with this garbage, there are real events happenning at the convention. Why don't you post some real news, or find another job.

Posted by: Steve | Aug 25, 2008 1:19:21 PM

Flip flop should NEVER be used in reference to one or the other of these candidates .. you need references for both? Give me a break!

Posted by: Sampson | Aug 25, 2008 1:20:06 PM

Thanks Mr. Biden - we're going to need every one of those extra 100K police officers at some point in time in Denver or IF Hussein should lose this election!!

OMG I heart Daddy Yankee....now to do a Google search because I've never heard of him.

Posted by: Trish | Aug 25, 2008 1:23:28 PM

Typical "liberal" media biased. One is a gangsta the other a Latin star. What are the lyrics of "Gasolina"? And what a draw he was! 100 people?

Tazkcmo - Berlin was a farce .. free concert! Next!

Posted by: Marcus | Aug 25, 2008 1:28:00 PM

So McCain and a Latin Grammy winner are drawing in a 100 high schoolers at a press conference. Now it makes more sense why his campaign was on such an offensive on the eve of the Democratic Convention.

Posted by: herewego | Aug 25, 2008 1:37:54 PM

So even with all the hoopla about Obama, today he is falling even further in the polls behind McCain. Face it, Obama, AMERICA DOES NOT WANT YOU!

The lyrics say: ...She loves gasolina! give her more gasolina! for the older women! for the minors! for the gatas (pussycats) that never turn off their engines...
Gasolina means gasoline (duh) it's slang for s ex. Filling her up with gasolina is filling her up with c um.

Family values anyone?

Never heard of this DY guy, but it sounds like the old pervert McCain might have a buddy to go cruising with to pick up chicks.
Isn't it about time for him to cash in on the Heinz fortune and trade in his old lady for a new trophy wife?
McSame doesn't have anything to offer the US, except more Swift Boat manure, and that isn't even good enough for biofuel.

You said it Jackson. We want a President, not a false Profit.

So, Daddy Yankee supports McCain because of his stance on immigration? LOL…the Reggaeton artist is Puerto Rican, so he doesn’t have to worry about being deported, now does he??? If you want to know why the young INTELLIGENT Latinos support Obama then read this Open Letter of Support for Obama from scores of high profile Hispanics:

Daddy Yankee or DaddyPuta? Quien Es?

Daddy Yankee? Gimme a break. John McCain is a total hypocrite. He demeans Obama for his being embraced by literally the entire creative community in America: Artists, Writers, Actors, Musicians. From Hollywood to Broadway it is hard to find anyone willing to admit that they support the Weekend at Bernie's Candidate, John McCain. Truth is all American musicians thats peak to middle class angst and pain (Springsteen, Mellencamp, Jackson Browne et. al etc) are not are not willing to have their brand sullied by any kind of affiliation or alliance with the McCain Campaign. In several cases they have asked McCain to stop playing their songs. So much so that , Mr. All American, can only point to a Swedish Pop Band and Dancing Queen as his favorite music. ABBA is ok. I own some CD's But, I find it hard to believe that a guy who's teeth are a little too yellow from knocking back a bit too much scotch hangs out in Sedona listening to Dancing Queen with his wife, unless he is having special visits with Bush Pal, Male Escort Jeff Gannon. Call me cynical, but I just don't buy it.

So, leave it to the McCain Campaign to find an ignorant rapper to pose along side McCain because he thinks McCain will be good on the Immigration issue---i.e., McCain will allow all of his friends to swim in to America. Yeah, you can tell these Neocon's really love minorities as they try to darken up Obama and paint him as the dangerous black man while the conveniently find another "darkie" latino to support them. Yeah these people really love minorities, compliant ones at least. Seems to me McCain is following Hillary and Rove's playbook. Peel off a few ignorant whites and digruntled old deadenders from the Clinton campaign and then get another puta to endorse your candidacy. For DaddyYankee not to see through his being used makes him simply a PUTA.

Posted by: Christopher London | Aug 25, 2008 2:46:41 PM

I am officially boycotting Daddy Yankee!!

Smart move by McCain to get young Latino...well LatinA...voters...

As for all of you naive Republican's Daddy Yankee's Gasolina is the same as Nelly's Pimp Juice....

Posted by: Mayra | Aug 25, 2008 2:49:26 PM

Too bad the liberal TIME magazine has BO's mug on it again for the NINTH TIME, McCain has only made 2 covers. Do the liberal media really think they can shove Bozo down our throats with all the celebrity hype? It's such a turn off...we don't want Denzil Washington to be our 44th President!
McCAIN.....ROCK THE LATINO VOTE, you know you won't get the rapper vote....98% of blacks on day one, made up their minds after Iowa. Doesn't matter what bozo has or will ever say...they are with him....just like O.J. was innocent.

Daddy Yankee or DaddyPuta? Quien Es?

The truth is that Daddy Yankee is that he is THUG PUNK marketing MISOGYNY. He happens to be good at marketing and sucking up to power is all he is doing. His alliance with McCain is plain and simple likely about promises made to him from high on up in the Neocon Hierarchy.

Wow John McCain is really rising with his endorsements.

Posted by: Isn't Yankee a slur to Americans | Aug 25, 2008 3:27:53 PM

Boy o boy what great news a singer no one knows endorses John McCain in front of about 100 High School kids.
The picture of him looks like he has axle greese on his hair. I am sure this will push McNobrain over the top and secure the election.

This morning the Republicans were singing there old "Shut up and sing" refrain to Madonna when she showed images insulting to McCain, now they praise another entertainer who supports him. Apparently their idea of freedom of speech is for Republican benefit only. Why am I not surprised?

Since all of these racist up here want to keep calling Barrack by his middle name let me say this. Sidney McCain is a hypocrite and Ludacris is so far from a gangsta rapper it is hilarious. However it is the first thing that anal, out of touch, dusty old men use when someone says "damn" in a song.

Daddy Yankee and lots of puerto ricans simply have a problem with black people so this doesnt supprise me. They think that they are white but are just minorities like all the rest of us.

Posted by: Mark Goen | Aug 26, 2008 11:22:46 AM

No one has a problem with John McCain introducing 13-18 year olds being introduced to a singer with lyrics like:

"Beat it up and break your back
Lay the wood and make you sweat
Girl, it's gonna be a long night
I'm wide up and ready to rake
C'mon and gimme a midnight snack
And I'm gonna have you moanin'"

Or the "give me semen" gasoline song?

If these were my children that came home and wanted these albums, I'd be so pissed off. Its a disgrace.

Posted by: RobC | Aug 26, 2008 11:29:27 AM

There is a huge amount of racism in the hispanic community against black people. This is just another example. Daddy Yankee is just another racist performer who stole the style, look and feel of BLACK hip hop rap stars, got rich and now stabbed them in the back. Typical. I'll never listen to his music again

Well done Daddy Yankee !! ;

You just endorsed the best candidate and the best Party.

There's no room for Democrats at this time of US history... There's no room for weak and liberal politics !!

This nation needs a strong, determined and visionary leader like John McCain.

Daddy Yankee is the best McCain can do among Hispanics. Sad.

Lets talk about MacCain voting with Bush 95% of the time, talk about the deficit and the terrible shape of the economy! I thought Republicans were supposed to be great about economy.

Posted by: beto | Aug 26, 2008 10:01:49 PM

This was great!! Gasolina is not about sex, it is about eergy independence, just like yankee said :) In all seriousness, gasolina is about drinking alcohol. i know b/ i am pureto rican. dy endorsed mccain b/c he is the real answer not only for his country but for all latinos!! viva el cangri!!

LOL - Here goes the race card again. Get off it. DO you hear all the white people complaining that Obama never talks about himself being 1/2 White - he presents himself as an AFRICAN AMERICAN and is just trying to get the black vote. Funny how he was ABANDONED by his BLACK FATHER, yet that is where his allegence is. What about his WHITE MOM and WHITE GRANDPARENTS that RAISED him. Don't even dare use the race card - if Obama truly embraced BOTH of his races, RACE would NOT be an ISSUE!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!

to Dawn | Aug 25, 2008 12:56:07 PM comment - For the record Barack Obama would never accept a public endorsement like this from any hip hop artist or reggaeton. There is no double standard. Gasolina is about sex by the way. WTG GOP!

the worst part about all this daddy and mccain thing is there are those kids who will vote for mccain for the simple fact that yankke is supporting him and this is wrong if the youth aren't even looking at the real issues we are screwed for the sake of this country and for our children it is time to teach kids and the people of this nation that the issue is what matters if you vote because of the race or the company one keeps than you are contributing to the downfall of this country in these times we must set aside our differences and think our or children and there children

Posted by: LBC_W | Sep 4, 2008 4:01:27 PM

What the hell does Daddy Yankee know about politics? Anyone who decides to vote for McCain solely on this endorsement is a grade-A idiot! An I am saying this as a Hispanic. Obama is the best choice for this country.

Mccain is the worst choice

okay you guys need to take a serious chill pill... I'm Puerto Rican too., but I think Obama is def. the best choice... Mcain is just another Bush.. ANd don't get me wrong I LOVE Daddy Yankee.. I'm even doing a Powerpoint on him now, but just because he supports Mcain doesn't mean anything... You can support Obama and get trashed talked... This is why this is being debated not everyone is going to vote like you do... And to cahnge your vote because of a latin artist/ latino rapper is stupid because we're trying to vote for someone who actually be a good president! Are you all brain dead morons?!? Do you WANT another Bush!??!

Why should American's settle for two candidates that are not even close to being good for The United States of America? Why do we settle for the choice of picking the lesser of two evils in a country where we are supposed to be "free" and have "rights?" Either way you vote, you are voting for a politician. (Look up what the definitions are for politician.) What they say they believe in goes out the window once in office and the mega bucks of the huge billion dollar companies starts to roll in.

Honestly, I don't understand why daddy yankee would endorse McCain && I'm puertorican myself...however, it does raise a thought in my mind making me want to look more into the matter...as for either of these artists' (daddy yankee && ludacris) lyrics; I personally don't think they're to be judged by them....they're hit makers && if they didn't say the things they DO on their songs, most of you wouldn't listen to them...it's mostly sex talk; let's be realistic, who doesn't like sex??...regardless, their lyrics don't necesarilly define their lifestyles or family values.

Posted by: Crystal | Oct 20, 2008 3:49:49 PM

Daddy yankee is on point he is voting with wisdom and not ignorance people who support borass are voting for a murderer who votes yes on abortions with no experience who wants to pull our troops out of iraq and ignore the fact that when iran threatened the usa and israel and said when they finish building there nuclear bombs they will take us off the map. And he wants to tax big companys which our country prospered off entrepreneurship and wants to give not share take and give to people on welfare which do not have goals in life and want a free ride in life mccain wants to give people on welfare hope and remember people we fix economic problems is by opportunity not taxing others for there accomplishments. all us latinos came to america for a better life right? Because we saw opportunity in america right?more jobs that pay better right? So why would you want your hard earned money getting taxed and passed around and taken from there borass is not going to ask he is going to take what we worked hard for

It's very funny. Obama has almost no experience in politics, but dumb people think he is for change, when you ask them about Palin, they cry she has no experience. Um, HELLO Wake up. Then when Jay-z & Diddy start endorsing Obama, it's because they care, When someone endorses McCain, it's just wrong? Can't win with people this dumb. That is why they just cry and cry and no one does anything. Most of the peolple voting for Obama don't even know WHY!!! It's just because he is black. I guess it's true ignorance is bliss.
