McCain: Hurricane Gustav May Suspend RNC
August 30, 2008 4:08 PM
ABC News' Karen Travers reports: In an interview with Fox News' Chris Wallace that will air Sunday morning, Sen. John McCain indicated that the GOP convention could be suspended because of Hurricane Gustav.
"It wouldn't be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster," McCain told Wallace.
McCain said that he has been in touch with the governors of the Gulf Coast states—where Gustav is expected to make landfall—and that his campaign would continue to monitor the now-Category 4 storm.
"I'm afraid, Chris, that we may have to look at that situation and we'll try and monitor it. I've been talking to Governors Jindal [La.], Barbour [Miss.], Riley [Ala.], Crist [Fla.], I've been talking to all of them," McCain told Wallace. "So we're monitoring it from day to day and I'm saying a few prayers too."
A Republican convention official tells ABC News, however, that at this point, there are no plans to cancel the convention but there are several contingency plans that are being looked at in terms of delegation travel and the program of speakers. Both Crist and Jindal are scheduled to speak at the convention this week, but no decisions have been made yet on their plans to come to Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
This official says the Republican National Convention Committee is "still moving forward with opening the convention on Monday" as planned and notes that there is official business that has to happen at the convention, like the actual nomination of John McCain and the platform ratification.
The RNCC has issued the following statement from 2008 Republican National Convention President and CEO Maria Cino:
"Like all Americans, our prayers are with those who will be affected by Hurricane Gustav. We continue to closely monitor the movement of the storm and are considering necessary contingencies. We are in communication with the Gulf state governors to make sure the convention is taking all the appropriate steps as the hurricane progresses. The safety of our affected delegations is our first priority and preparing for Gustav comes before anything else."

Not this time. People are still upset about McCain and Bush yukking it up during Katrina.
Posted by: Moo | Aug 30, 2008 4:18:04 PM
Here's the irony. The conservatives were praying for rain for the Obama speech instead their convention is getting the rain.
Obama rocked it on Thursday.

Moo ... if you have to lie to make a point, your point becomes pointless .. McCain hardly yukked it up during Katrina ... where was your Obamanation? .. he wasn't in New Orleans!!

It appears the prayers are working. Something has been pushing that hurricane westward for two days now.

What ill timing. The Dems are going to rock this vote. Let us see how the Bush Adm. responds to THIS one. What a farce.
Go Dems!! Obama/Biden...Clinton.

The Rep. are thrilled to cancel the convention. This will give McCain more needed time to dump Ms Palin. Way too much is coming to the surface regarding this lady. Look for her to have sudden health issues that will prevent her from being his running mate.

Gustav: PROOF that God exists.
Posted by: Libratine | Aug 30, 2008 4:44:35 PM
HA! Do you know how many people have flight plans and hotels booked ???? This would screw everything up if they cancelled. Only real reason is cuz they want all the news coverage to be on them and not have to share it. Republicans are a JOKE.
Posted by: Barb | Aug 30, 2008 4:49:34 PM
I wont pray for any tragedy for any political reasons, People died during Katrina and it is wrong to wish history to repeat itself, McCain's camp need to understand praying for rain is not the solution for the problems we facing, last time another Republican said an attack on American soil will help McCain win the elections, McCain said the same thing in 2004 for Bush, Republicans need to understand people died in Katrina & 9/11, no one benefited apart from Republicans according to them. Lets talk about jobs, health care, Iraq/Iran, but there is no fun or gain when one person die during those tragedies.

the comments by dems at a time when people like me in texas are worried about the hurricane just shows me more why i left the dem party they are like the people who we seen spitting on our service men when they were protesting the war and trying to have the enlisting office in that crummy college town that was on the news dave in houston

This demonstration of selflessness only reinforces what everybody already knows.
And that is:
that John McCain will always put the public interest over partisan interests.

It never ceases to amaze me. Those of us who accept the notion that in the beginning God created like to suggest that God is raining down some sort of punishment or perhaps manipulating human events for the benefit of one group over another. In my view nothing could be further from the truth. At the end of creation God said that everthing was good. That meant that his relationship with humans was perfect---human relationships were perfect---nature's relationship with nature was perfect---and human relationships with nature were perfect.
Plants were provided for food for all creatures---there was no death. These relationships became fractured when humans disobeyed and decided they would like to be like God. The punishment was simple---life would become difficult---all these perfect relationships would become troubled---and death would now be part of life. Hurricanes, earthquakes, drought, floods, accidents, and any other such tragedy are now as much a part of life as is joy, happiness, and good times. God promised a Messiah who would heal those broken relationships. Christians believe that person to be Jesus Christ. God does not sleep nor does he interfere. We are created with the intelligence to figure out what needs to be done in the good times and in the bad. We need to pray for the wisdom to use that intelligence and work through whatever life brings. It sounds to me that perhaps we have learned something from out failures in the face of Katrina and are beginning to work through the threat of Gustav. May God be with us through it all.

As devasting as Gustav may be where it strikes & the havoc down by Katrina - both will be NOTHING in terms of costs to U.S.citizens when compared to the devastation possible with the election of Obama/Biden. With their desire for more costly gov.programs & for more gov.control of our lives...their agenda brings promise of total collapse of our U.S. way of life. It will bring about the total overrun by our enemies...&usher in the end of the Western World.

The Anchorage Daily News is reporting that many of Palin's local colleagues, even Republican, were rather stunned by her being chosen as McCain's vice president.
State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to give her the news.
"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" said Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

As the old people used to say, "God don't like ugly." "christians" prayed for "torrential rains to fall upon Obama 2 minutes into his speech." Now their convention may be cancelled due to torrential rains. Folks, if you don't like Obama, so be it, but the hatred that is being spewed towards him is dangerous not for him, but for you! Life is too short to hate anyone, whoever wins in November, be it an old man, or black man, he will be the right man, because God is in control/ long as God is God.

Why bother, they wouldn't even let the Nevadans vote in their own primary. Just suspend it and don't even bother with the whole farce. The bitter, stubborn GOP just threw Nevada to Obama, for no damn good reason. And if his election is as close as it may be, those voters will put Obama over the top. If the GOP could have just let their own voters have there say, it wouldn't have changed anything. Now they are driving their own base and voters over to Barr, or Obama because they forced John McCain down our throats, when we know he's NO conservative. (Joe Lieberman for VP, Mitt Romney... HE'S IN THE WRONG DAMN PARTY!!!) Johnny needs to go over to the other side and STAY there. It wouldn't make much difference... He's been there all along!!!

No one yukked it up during Katrina. It was the ineptitude of the Democratic governor and New Orleans mayor who were unable to react and lead that caused Katrina to be the disaster it was. As for praying for rain for the Obama speech, it wasn't necessary. He managed to say nothing without any help from above. McCain/Palin in a landslide.
Posted by: Joanne600 | Aug 30, 2008 5:19:53 PM
This comment follows my previous back to back. Had it rained on Thursday in Denver, the Democrats would simply have had to move indoors. That would have decreased the space available and cut down the size of the crowd. The speeches would have been the same and the enthusiasm would not have been diminished.
I don't really think the Republicans need to cancel their convention because of Gustav. The business of the convention needs to be carried out. Gustav may indeed cause some of the celebration to be more subdued, but Gustav does not need to be the cause for lack of enthusiasm expressed for issues the Republicans find important. In essense conventions are more pep rallies than anything else and these are need by both parties in order to carry out a useful campaign that allows "we, the people" to make informed decisions. I am a Democrat who considers himself a liberal-conservative. I will be voting for Barack Obama, but I plan to listen to as much of the Republican convention as possible. I want to hear what Sarah Pailin and John McCain have to say. To my way of thinking we need to thoughtfully listen to both sides.

God is God and He existed from the beginning. God is the Alpha and Omega, God is the Beginning and the End. Almighty God is the Supreme Commander in Chief of all the Nations of the world that He Created. He calls the shots. God alone establishes all Authority, including the President of the United States of America. God has already established the next President of the United States of America, whom He will show forth in due season. I am confident that it will not be Barack Obama, or any other Democrat.
The Word of God says in Proverbs 5:21-22
"A man's ways are in full view of the
LORD, and He examines all his paths.
The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast."
The truth of the matter is that God saw Senator Barack Obama receiving large sums of money from a well known woman, who by her own admission has renounced Jesus, the Christ of God. Therefore the said woman is anti-Christ.
I believe that God is displeased with what He Saw, and the cords of Obama's SIN HOLDS HIM FAST.

CuriousIndep, there are a lot of us "liberals" who believe in God and some of us accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. God put his mark on me when I was two months old on the Feast of Pentecost when I was washed in the waters of baptism---I was born again, not by my action, but by God's. That is my belief---a belief that has been nurtured through the years by family, friends, and church. Oh, yes, by the way I'm a gay Christian on top of it all. God is the the God of us all. He/She does not pick party affiliation.

God is not a Democrat or Republican.
He is sovereign. He has already chose the next president of the United States of America. We are only going to vote for him on Nov. 4th.
God can only turn the bad in to good. America, please pray to the Living God to save our country from another tragedy. When one American hurts, it hurts America. We cannot find satisfaction when one American is hurt by a natural tragedy whether he is a Republican or Democrat.
People with petty hearts and partisan minds always wish ill for others. It is very sad.

Palin is a great choice for the Rep. Party.
They can now off themselves once and for all.
I also think that Palin will be off the ticket way before November.
The evangelicals should become a third party and totally distance themselves from the Republicans. That way, they can stay out of each other's way. However, both groups are way too co-dependent and disfunctional to separate from each other. Lincoln would be disgusted to find his party in such dishonor.

Well unfortunately peoples lives are going to be lost, again as a result of more severe weather patterns.
Whether it its fires in Austrailia, tornadoes and floods in the midwest, or hurricanes in the gulf. The severity and frequency of these events are escalating. FACT-look it up.
It matters not who is the Presdient as the world is at its tipping point with polar ice caps melting, waters rising and temperatures increasing in our oceans. So get used to it.
Maybe one day America will wake up to the understanding that you cannot continue to burn things for energy without CREATING THESE KIND OF RESULTS.
Electricity demands GLOBALLY are rising, with 50% increases in demand expected over the next 20 years, as America sits woefully unprepared.
Unfortunately, currently solar and wind are not viable alternatives to meet the demand, and nuclear is too scary for our politicians and people to look at honestly.
So as a result, we will get exactly what we deserve. More death and destruction with increased regularity.
I guess just get used to it, and move to higher ground, thats all we can do.
I know these comments don't make anyone "feel good" but it is just the truth. Focus on the truth, not being right and maybe things will get better for everyone. Until then they won't.

Ronald Redman: Let God be God and don't presume to know God's mind. In due time we will know who will be president as God works through God's people to bring that to pass. Since God is not a God of a particular party we cannot say at this moment which party will win. If God's people do not use the intelligence that God has given them to make this choice then that choice could well be displeasing to God, but whatever the choice it will stand. The nature of "free will" (liberty or a liberal society) is that we get to choose. Sometimes our choices are good and sometimes bad---sometimes they bring blessing and sometimes they bring curses.

Please, don't say this is a message from God people (although it is a little ironic since many Republicans said Katrina was a message from God).
This is an impending disaster that will affect millions of lives (potentially).
It is not a joking matter. I am not at all a fan of the Republicans, but I applaud them if they postpone the convention. That is the right thing to do.
We should say a few prayers at the moment that this hurricane is not another Katrina and that it spares people who have already suffered a great deal.

Never mind the political ramifications, many people risk losing an awful lot, if not there lives (please God). Now is not the moment for silly gloating and pathetic gags. lets make sure people are safe before that happens.

And I also saw the video of the guy praying for rain. I thought it was stupid and petty. I will be praying for the people in harms way, not for harm on Obama.
And as far all you people criticizing Palin...I am sure that you had no idea who she was 1 week ago, and so you really are just repeating the party line of criticism. Think for yourself for once. Of course you will reject her if she doesn't represent your values, but don't be such lemmings and repeat everything that comes off of MSNBC and AirAmerica.

I am an independent, which means I think for myself and try and gather my own information, seek truth, and vote accordingly.
I dont sit around fearing judgment of others for going my own way, nor seek approval from others for my choices.
It is one of the most difficult things about being a true leader. Doing the unpopular whether you end up being right or wrong, but being committed to seeking the truth.
Truthfully, Palin is the only one in this campaign who is even the least bit interesting and the only one who I beleive genuinely tries to do the right thing, regardless of the consequences or judgement of others.
It is unfortunate for our country, that their are so many followers, too lazy and cowardly to do their own work and stand up for what they believe in.
We get all these lousy politicians one after another because of the mentality of so many idiots which are broadly represented on this site. Just a bunch of ignorant people with a license to vote.
Again we are getting just what we deserve, crappy representation, and apparantly alot of people here actually approve, very sad.

I just heard Sarah Palin speak at a McCain rally in Washington Pennsylvania...
It was the "exact same speech" she gave as her acceptance speech yesterday, but not delivered as well... Plus the crowd booed when she came to her line praising Hillary Clinton!
So what kind of a joke is this? McCain offers us some one trick pony?
She recanted the same tired story, the same lie about the bridge to nowhere.
She actually supported it in 2006, but when the focus came on it and federal funds were cut, she ran away from that support at full speed!
What is this, some kind of an ill conceived beauty pageant? Also McCain just bumbled through his introduction of her as well, making mistake after mistake...
Now he wants us to vote for him and his Rah, rah "yes woman" cheerleader with ZERO National and foreign policy experience??
I don't think so.....
We need real change in Washington and a real vision - not some ambiguous promise to "reform things."

How can people like Palin, who we would assume would have a basic grasp of reason, believe that global warming is a hoax and then go on to insist that creationism (intel. design) is science. As a result of rising water temperature these tropical storms will continue to grow in frequency and strength. But go ahead, tear up the artic, burn more oil, force mass extinctions, flood the coasts and condemn our children to the bleakest of futures by electing Mcpandering philanderer and his 3rd beauty queen.

Great news! This will give Sarah Palin four more days to learn neat-o facts about how the U.S. government works.

Remember the old communist line - If you tell a lie often enough it eventually becomes true? Obama posters sure understand that concept!!

So Palin doesn't think that global warming is man made. Ok thats fine with me.
She however isn't denying its existance right?
So what do we need for those dems out there concerned about global warming? Nuclear Power is the only solution. Soloar and wind have been politically funded for 30 years now and account for a combined 5% of our electricity supply. Why? Because it is not yet economically viable, thats why.
Whos for nuclear power? McCain.
So regardless of what is causing it, the response needs to be the same. Focus on the solution.
Even Greenpeace finally recognizes that Nuclear is the only RIGHT answer for now to solve the energy needs of the future. Otherwise we will live gagging on carbon as they do in China.
Look it up and quit being suckers!
At least McCain has that part right.
I still dont know any details from Obama, except the word change.
For all our new voters, Obama didn't make up the "change" platform. It has been used since the beginning of our democracy by which ever party isn't in power, beit the house, senate, or presidency.
Just so you know.

GOD HAS BECOME A DEMOCRAT.
James Dobson Head of Focus on the Family, prayed that is would rain during the Thursday evening speech by Barack Obama. This vain example shows that the Religious right is no longer in the favor of GOD. Because GOD now has answered another prayer to send a Hurricane to disrupt the GOP convention. GOD is no longer seen as favoring the Religious right and has become a Democrat. Repent you Republicans repent. Ask GOD to forgive you for supporting George Bush. The Hurricane is his response to your misuse of his word. Repent.

Davis,
Just read your post. How dare Palin deliver the same speech as yesterday and not as well!! NO WAY!!
Just so you know she is auditioning to become the VP, not for a leading roll in a movie.
Folks this is not television. If you are not up to handling the responsibility of doing the work to vote, please do the rest of us Americans a favor and stay home, regardless of your party biases.
This is not American Idol, and our leadership should not be chosen on how they speak but what they actually say, do, and have done, as it is the best indicator of what they will do in the future.
LOOK past your bias's/discriminations (including racisim, sexism, age discrimination) and try and find THE TRUTH.
Please!
I only ask because I see so many here saying that they are "the good ones" on the "right side" only to follow it up with discriminatory remarks.
Please, go and look at what you wrote, then go and look in the mirror, and recognize that you are who you hate.
It is generally why we dislike people, because we see ourselves in that person. If you dont understand this, take a class, and you will.

The people still living in N.O. after Katrina are the same people that vote Republican, because democrats are too "socialist" - that "socialism" sure pays off when you decide the taxpayers should support you when you live in "hurricane alley", in a city built below sea level (and sinking from rising sea levels), and don't want to pay for flood insurance.
Interesting.

For all you out there making jokes, I live on the upper Texas coast. Three years ago, my city was literally wiped out by Rita. Now, we are having to deal with Gustav. Many of you do not know how horrendous it is to have to go through a hurricane......I would ask that you lay off the jokes and pray for the thousands of families that are in total fear of this monster looming in the Gulf!

Wow, this is the most disheartening blog thread I've read in a long, long time. How can people use this Hurricane as an excuse to spew and vomit political hatred? We are all Americans. In every conflict, all parties think God is "on their side". I would like to think that my fellow conservatives would not behave in such a manner if this were happening to the Democrats. There are idiot zealots on both sides of the isle as proven recently. Let's band together as brothers and sisters to see our fellow AMERICANS through this upcoming event. May God be merciful and spare the lives of both dems, repubs, and everything in between.

I think its a GREAT idea that the RNC are thinking about turning the RNC into a service event, raising money for the Red Cross and other agencies to help people suffering from Hurricane Gustav!
I was an Obama supporter, but now that Senator McCain chose Sarah Palin and is thinking of doing this for the people on the Gulf Coast, he has my vote. It appears the Democrats and Obama are ALL about themselves, where Senator McCain and the Republicans are ALL about Americans!. Maybe thats why the Republicans chant "U.S.A." instead of "Yes We Can", because, the Republicans are ALL about America!
Thank you, Senator McCain and Governor Palin.....you just got another vote from Obama for you!
McCain/Palin 08!

I THINK ITS VERY SAD AND PATHETIC THAT THE DEMOCRATS ARE THANKING GOD FOR THIS HURRICANE....THAT THEY CAN WISH SO MUCH DESTRUCTION AND CAUSE DEATH TO SO MANY PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR HATE FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY......VERY SICK AND APPALLING TO MICHAEL MOORE AND YOU OTHER LIBERALS THAT HAVE THANKED GOD FOR THIS CAT. 4 STORM...SHAME ON ALL OF YOU, AFTER THE STORM DONT PRETEND TO SEND YOUR PRAYERS AND CONCERNS......

With the exception of a few of you who are being civil, this discussion is really getting rediculous. Some of the vicious remarks that are being made are totally out of place for those who claim to be patriots. This Democrat is not thanking God for any tragedy that befalls anyone, nor does this "evangelical" (one who loves the Gospel of reconciliation in Jesus Christ) Christian believe that God is punishing anyone. If you will read your Bible you will note that Jesus said, "I did not come into the world to condemn the world, but to redeem (reconcile) the world to myself." (John 3:16,17)

REALITY CHECK
==============
The democrats didn't get the right
bounce after the convention.
Check previous conventions and you
will get the numbers.
The democrats have a problem
with Obama on the ticket.
I'm an ex-democrat-Hillary supporter
and i left the party the next day
after she withdrew from the race.
Obama is the problem with democrats this year....Dean,Pelosi don't get it.
Americans vote for president NOT the
VP.
Obama doesn't qualify for commander
in chief......
REMEMBER ME IN NOVEMBER.....

It has been predicted on the web that MCcain's campaign is cursed because of mocking Moses the prophet in his anti-obama ad the One and One II. Indeed Gustav is crashing his party. God is not to be mocked.

Dearest Rod! Isn't IT interesting thAT Florida has SUFFERED MANY hurricanes without the help of the government????? Oh yes, it's a Republican state who doesn't rely on WELFARE. Oh yes, that's right LOUISIANA is a DEMOCRATIC state that HAD to point fingers because GAWD forbid that they are capable of being responsible for taking care of the WELFARE STATE. Yup, the GOVENOR of that state must have been eatin bon bons or smoking a cigar when Katrina was about to hit. THEY HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO TAKE ACTION! But of course it's Bushes fault that KATRINA even happened.
No doubt the REPUBLICANS WILL WIN AGAIN IN 2008! If YOU want CHANGE, then YOU must CHANGE!!!

First of all, fellow Americans' lives are in great jeopardy. We need to pray for them and help them. For those of you making this a political issue, go ahead and vote for McCain. For those Hillary voters that are so upset that the process of democracy didn't coronate her, vote for McCain. But, if McCain wins, pls don't bellyache anymore. It's sickening. Less than 29% of all Americans approve of the direction the country is heading (not sure of the intelligence level of those 29% other than I realize Americans aren't all the brightest bulb in the package) but some still support the old guy even though he will take us in an even worse direction than Bush/Cheney. And Mayor.Gov Palin - pls don't tell me she will lead our country in wartime. What in the hell has happened to this one greatest country in the history of mankind? What on earth are you people thinking?

How about just cancelling the convention. That would be great. If George Bush is not going to be there, what's the use.
Better yet they can all show up and have one huge bingo nite.

This is a sign
There was this one guy from "focus on the family" praying for rain in Denver at the DNC as Obama gave his acceptance speech at Mile High. I was in Denver that day and weatherwise, it was the BEST day of the year. Absolutely beautiful day.
Now for the RNC we get a cat 4 hurricane barreling toward the coast still reeling from Katrina three years ago.
The republicans should just go away for a few decades.

///Obama served himself first! He took care of himself first! He took care of Michelle and her job. He took care of Rezko and Wright! John McCain served his country first! That is what is really the bug in you butts is that McCain is a patriot and Obama is anti-American! Obama's phoney wife hates this country and McCain's wife loves it! Obama's friends try to demean (Wright) and even destroy (Ayers)our great country while McCain and his friends try to protect and defend it! You commies and pinko's will never take over our great country!///
I thought our country allowed free speech, free association and the right for its people to think for themselves.
The Republican party has demonstrate it cannot not lead. Now there is a chance for a change.
McCain served his country by getting shot down. He spent time as a POW. That should surely dissuade him from pursuing the pointless war in Iraq/Iran. But no, by all accounts the guy wants to invade Iran.
I just dont think Obama his going to be that crazy.
I seriously believe the author of the quoted post needs to build themselves a time machine and return to the 1950s. I don't see race, I don't see color, I see Americans.
