McCain: Hurricane Gustav May Suspend RNC
August 30, 2008 4:08 PM
ABC News' Karen Travers reports: In an interview with Fox News' Chris Wallace that will air Sunday morning, Sen. John McCain indicated that the GOP convention could be suspended because of Hurricane Gustav.
"It wouldn't be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster," McCain told Wallace.
McCain said that he has been in touch with the governors of the Gulf Coast states—where Gustav is expected to make landfall—and that his campaign would continue to monitor the now-Category 4 storm.
"I'm afraid, Chris, that we may have to look at that situation and we'll try and monitor it. I've been talking to Governors Jindal [La.], Barbour [Miss.], Riley [Ala.], Crist [Fla.], I've been talking to all of them," McCain told Wallace. "So we're monitoring it from day to day and I'm saying a few prayers too."
A Republican convention official tells ABC News, however, that at this point, there are no plans to cancel the convention but there are several contingency plans that are being looked at in terms of delegation travel and the program of speakers. Both Crist and Jindal are scheduled to speak at the convention this week, but no decisions have been made yet on their plans to come to Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
This official says the Republican National Convention Committee is "still moving forward with opening the convention on Monday" as planned and notes that there is official business that has to happen at the convention, like the actual nomination of John McCain and the platform ratification.
The RNCC has issued the following statement from 2008 Republican National Convention President and CEO Maria Cino:
"Like all Americans, our prayers are with those who will be affected by Hurricane Gustav. We continue to closely monitor the movement of the storm and are considering necessary contingencies. We are in communication with the Gulf state governors to make sure the convention is taking all the appropriate steps as the hurricane progresses. The safety of our affected delegations is our first priority and preparing for Gustav comes before anything else."

I am no longer a Dem. I would like to see McCain and Palin but please show some tact and postpone the RNC. It would show class and concern for your fellow Americans.

As the old people used to say, "God don't like ugly." "christians" prayed for "torrential rains to fall upon Obama 2 minutes into his speech." Now their convention may be cancelled due to torrential rains. Folks, if you don't like Obama, so be it, but the hatred that is being spewed towards him is dangerous not for him, but for you! Life is too short to hate anyone, whoever wins in November, be it an old man, or black man, he will be the right man, because God is in control/ long as God is God.

Why bother, they wouldn't even let the Nevadans vote in their own primary. Just suspend it and don't even bother with the whole farce. The bitter, stubborn GOP just threw Nevada to Obama, for no damn good reason. And if his election is as close as it may be, those voters will put Obama over the top. If the GOP could have just let their own voters have there say, it wouldn't have changed anything. Now they are driving their own base and voters over to Barr, or Obama because they forced John McCain down our throats, when we know he's NO conservative. (Joe Lieberman for VP, Mitt Romney... HE'S IN THE WRONG DAMN PARTY!!!) Johnny needs to go over to the other side and STAY there. It wouldn't make much difference... He's been there all along!!!

If Gustav hits the Gulf Coast, I wonder if Bush will be sober enough this time to pay attention at the briefings...

Interesting what McCain says about this hurricaine........three years ago when Katrina was coming into the gulf Bush was at McCain's celebrating his birthday. Where was the good decision making from either of those two high powerful men then?
Peace.

No one yukked it up during Katrina. It was the ineptitude of the Democratic governor and New Orleans mayor who were unable to react and lead that caused Katrina to be the disaster it was. As for praying for rain for the Obama speech, it wasn't necessary. He managed to say nothing without any help from above. McCain/Palin in a landslide.

This comment follows my previous back to back. Had it rained on Thursday in Denver, the Democrats would simply have had to move indoors. That would have decreased the space available and cut down the size of the crowd. The speeches would have been the same and the enthusiasm would not have been diminished.
I don't really think the Republicans need to cancel their convention because of Gustav. The business of the convention needs to be carried out. Gustav may indeed cause some of the celebration to be more subdued, but Gustav does not need to be the cause for lack of enthusiasm expressed for issues the Republicans find important. In essense conventions are more pep rallies than anything else and these are need by both parties in order to carry out a useful campaign that allows "we, the people" to make informed decisions. I am a Democrat who considers himself a liberal-conservative. I will be voting for Barack Obama, but I plan to listen to as much of the Republican convention as possible. I want to hear what Sarah Pailin and John McCain have to say. To my way of thinking we need to thoughtfully listen to both sides.

You are just as Delusional, just a Senile and Desperate as John McCain himself !!!

Let's pray that the convention gets cancelled, and the Gulf Coast gets skipped by the Hurricane. We don't need thousands more dying at the hands of a Hurricane and Bush/Cheney/McCain, again.

Looks like Joanne600 is delirious and has gotten hold of some of Cindy's stolen pain pills. Joanne, give them back, please.

God is God and He existed from the beginning. God is the Alpha and Omega, God is the Beginning and the End. Almighty God is the Supreme Commander in Chief of all the Nations of the world that He Created. He calls the shots. God alone establishes all Authority, including the President of the United States of America. God has already established the next President of the United States of America, whom He will show forth in due season. I am confident that it will not be Barack Obama, or any other Democrat.
The Word of God says in Proverbs 5:21-22
"A man's ways are in full view of the
LORD, and He examines all his paths.
The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast."
The truth of the matter is that God saw Senator Barack Obama receiving large sums of money from a well known woman, who by her own admission has renounced Jesus, the Christ of God. Therefore the said woman is anti-Christ.
I believe that God is displeased with what He Saw, and the cords of Obama's SIN HOLDS HIM FAST.

Reading the comments of the liberals here I guess that the black people of NO are celebreting now in the street

CuriousIndep, there are a lot of us "liberals" who believe in God and some of us accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. God put his mark on me when I was two months old on the Feast of Pentecost when I was washed in the waters of baptism---I was born again, not by my action, but by God's. That is my belief---a belief that has been nurtured through the years by family, friends, and church. Oh, yes, by the way I'm a gay Christian on top of it all. God is the the God of us all. He/She does not pick party affiliation.

God is not a Democrat or Republican.
He is sovereign. He has already chose the next president of the United States of America. We are only going to vote for him on Nov. 4th.
God can only turn the bad in to good. America, please pray to the Living God to save our country from another tragedy. When one American hurts, it hurts America. We cannot find satisfaction when one American is hurt by a natural tragedy whether he is a Republican or Democrat.
People with petty hearts and partisan minds always wish ill for others. It is very sad.
Sincerely,

Palin is a great choice for the Rep. Party.
They can now off themselves once and for all.
I also think that Palin will be off the ticket way before November.
The evangelicals should become a third party and totally distance themselves from the Republicans. That way, they can stay out of each other's way. However, both groups are way too co-dependent and disfunctional to separate from each other. Lincoln would be disgusted to find his party in such dishonor.

Listen, if God had a hand in politics he would have taken Obama out of that hate filled church sooner than 20 years.

Well unfortunately peoples lives are going to be lost, again as a result of more severe weather patterns.
Whether it its fires in Austrailia, tornadoes and floods in the midwest, or hurricanes in the gulf. The severity and frequency of these events are escalating. FACT-look it up.
It matters not who is the Presdient as the world is at its tipping point with polar ice caps melting, waters rising and temperatures increasing in our oceans. So get used to it.
Maybe one day America will wake up to the understanding that you cannot continue to burn things for energy without CREATING THESE KIND OF RESULTS.
Electricity demands GLOBALLY are rising, with 50% increases in demand expected over the next 20 years, as America sits woefully unprepared.
Unfortunately, currently solar and wind are not viable alternatives to meet the demand, and nuclear is too scary for our politicians and people to look at honestly.
So as a result, we will get exactly what we deserve. More death and destruction with increased regularity.
I guess just get used to it, and move to higher ground, thats all we can do.
I know these comments don't make anyone "feel good" but it is just the truth. Focus on the truth, not being right and maybe things will get better for everyone. Until then they won't.
