McCain Aide Mocks Obama's Columned Stage

Share

August 26, 2008 11:10 PM

ABC News' David Chalian and Teddy Davis report:

When Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., moves the Democratic National Convention from the Pepsi Center to Invesco Field in Denver on Thursday, the freshman senator is planning to speak from a columned stage resembling an ancient Greek temple.

"Is this from the Onion?" quipped a McCain adviser.

The reference to the satirical newspaper came after Reuters reported that Obama is planning an elaborate rock concert setup complete with post-speech fireworks.

The national anthem will even have a touch of celebrity: Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar-winning actress and former "American Idol" castoff, will perform the honors at the onset of the evening.

Starting with a July ad which included footage of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, the McCain campaign has been airing a series of television ads which paint Obama as a celebrity lacking in substance.

The celebrity-like trappings of Obama's Thursday's speech may have given the Republicans new ammo.

Oh, just more grandstanding from this pathetic wannabe pop star. Too bad the Democrats couldn't have got behind a politician that actually wanted to get elected so she could help the people in this country. Instead all they have is someone interested in his own celebrity. Someone could offer him a movie or tv deal tomorrow and he's forget all about being President.

Posted by: Kay | Aug 26, 2008 11:32:23 PM

Hi Kay,

I assure you that millions and millions of Americans will be watching.

Sorry to disappoint.

Posted by: Connor | Aug 26, 2008 11:34:37 PM

Perhaps the McCain campaign is jealous because they couldn't begin to pull off something like that.

Posted by: Bill | Aug 26, 2008 11:34:50 PM

Just hand us republicans more material for more "One" ads...has he got anything to show? What was his record as a senator? Huh?

You would think with all the high powered Hollywood help, Staging the children in the act and then the Kennedy, they could do better. This is Entertainment Tonight, not someone who can be president. We did find out who is paying for this run to be President. Kennedy, Kerry, Biden and the whole east coast political mafia. Why else Biden as VP.

McCain you are old enough to remember what it was like to be in a Greek temple.

Go to sleep old man, the future does not include you!

I really cannot tell what Oboma is running for. He is running to be President of the world, he is running to be the messiah or does he turly believe he is the one and only ture God. I think it must be the later. Maybe ones should look at the scriptures as he may just be the fortold anti-christ. At the most he thinks he is some kind of immortal God. That is all we need.

And I'd suggest that everyone else quit speculating and see what materialized.

This has got to be a joke. Will the One be carrying his commandments on a tablet as he rises? Maybe Samson can pull down the temple and the savior can resurrect it? He may give a great speech but after hearing what an authentic president should sound like with Hillary I'm going to have to vote McCain. God we got it wrong.

Posted by: RIA | Aug 26, 2008 11:40:19 PM

Maybe Mother Nature will provide Senator Obama with a nice storm of wind, rain, hail. thunder and lightening just when Obama steps up to the podium on Thursday night. Obama's ego is just too great for a rational man. He is so corrupt.
He will never get my vote or approval.

Posted by: Mary | Aug 26, 2008 11:40:28 PM

It's funny that even Hillary tonight couldn't say anything nice about Nobama except the fact that she supported him. Heck I'd say that for the 20 Mill she got to pay off her campaign debts. But that's the only reason she showed up. Bill isn't even going to the love fest on Thurs. Obama=empty promises+empty suit....

Posted by: frank3108 | Aug 26, 2008 11:43:42 PM

It's funny. For the candidate who is saying the other guy is the celebrity, McCain is spending alot of time on television, doing Jay Leno. McCain is certainly more comfortable in front of the camera. And which candidate was in Wedding Crashers? The real celebrity, Mr.$500 pair of shoes, John McCain.

Posted by: Jeff in Los Angeles | Aug 26, 2008 11:44:30 PM

Classical cholars who have studied the Gettysburg address say that the speech reflects Abraham Lincoln's intimate familiarity with classical oratorical style and that it's perpetual appeal is grounded in Lincoln's command of it. Everett spoke for three hours at Gettysburg. After Lincoln spoke, he acknolwedged that what Lincoln said in fewer than three minutes was immemorial. All of television is theatre. Is the classical staging so distressing to distract from the fine oratory I anticipate?

Because all great presidents of substance rise out of the floor in front of fake Greek ruins with fireworks in the background and Bon Jovi playing a concert.

Posted by: Jo | Aug 26, 2008 11:46:23 PM

To me- Obama cannot even cross the finish line without the help of the Clintons whom the Obamas cannot even show respect to. What a show to see the powerful Clintons begging their base to back Barrack. Did you notice the loud applause that Hillary got vs. Michelle's applause the prior night. Did you see how uncomfortable Michelle was when the camera was on her. Geez. Hillary had to remind her own party of her hubby's, former president!!! accomplishments. Can you believe Bill is so yesterday news! God, after the libs defended him endlessly. Thank God Hillary is not on that ticket! The dems selected the wrong person. It proves the northeastern libs run that party and remember Hillary's not from NY. She couldn't stand out on her own because she needs that same base in 2012. Libs always put their party before their country. She would had given McCain a hard fight.

Jesus is The Messiah and The Chosen One. You who thinks it is so cute and so funny to call Obama this are facing the gates of hell...and deservingly. And it's even sadder coming from so called "evangelicals."

Jean, by the way, when O-SAME-O first started running for President, some of his supporters posted a video online depicting him as Jesus. His so-called minister, the Rev. Wright, likened him to the second coming of Christ. The Republicans didn't start it. O-SAME-O's supporters did.

Not that this is much better, but Washington DC has strong Greek and Roman architectural influences, so perhaps he is alluding to where he plans on being after the election as opposed to him thinking he is "god-like."

Posted by: LISA | Aug 27, 2008 12:06:54 AM

No one who supports Obama thinks he's the messiah. Democrats actually don't do messianic. That's Republican terrain.

Democrats like to think, Republicans are the ones who like to take things on faith, like the existence of WMDs in Iraq, the effectiveness of trickle-down economics, the wisdom of a weak-dollar policy, the idea that if you leave business alone, it will regulate itself and act ethically, that John McCain really is a maverick...

The proof that Republicans aren't good at thought (if all of the above weren't enough), they criticize Obama because he "pauses" before answering questions.

That's called thinking. You all should try it. When your candidate answers questions before they have been asked (or really doesn't answer them but launches into oft-repeated war stories) that's not thinking, and where I come from, that's not good.

I honestly don't understand why this entire farce isn't getting more attention from the media. Oops - maybe I just answered my own question. Has any candidate, Dem or GOP, ever done anything like this before - moved his acceptance speech away from the convention and into another arena just so he can put on a bigger show? What does that say about the man - the REAL man - you know, the one we really don't know because he hasn't been around long enough? Where did the man come from, anyway - and who are the people who put him where he is - and, perhaps even more importantly - WHY?

Posted by: Trish Jones | Aug 27, 2008 12:11:19 AM

What does it tell you about someone who lets his handlers plan a rock star tour of Europe to give a glorified speech at a rock concert? Further, this Greek temple backdrop being planned is to show him as a magnificent of the ages? What drama! After the bad reviews of his grand tour of Europe, you would think he has a mind of his own and would say no to it. More gimmicks and more sound bites. American idol venues just won't do for electing a President. When you are lacking in deep down substance and experience, I guess you need a lot of filler. Show biz, folks. Posted by: Clifton | Aug 27, 2008 12:23:46 AM

Yes, John McCain was a war hero. That automatically means he'd be a great president, right?

We can tell this because throughout history, there have been so many great democratic leaders who were soldiers/war heroes. Let's revisit a few:

1. Napoleon Bonaparte
2. Joseph Stalin
3. Robert Mugabe
4. Pervez Musharraf
5. Fidel Castro
6. Idi Amin
7. Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-Tung)
8. Hugo Chavez
9. Tito
10. Francisco Franco

And in our own history, Ulysses Grant (another Republican war hero), ranked one of the worst and most corrupt Presidents in our history.

Well I could go on, but just from this list I think we can see why I advocate thought. Saying someone will make a great leader of a democracy because they were a soldier/ war hero is an argument that clearly lacks thought.

Yeah, "Larry". Go on and quote that a thousand more times, and it still rings false. Bush/Cheney certainly had a lot of experience and what did it get us? America's economy, jobs, ideals, and foreign relations all into the garbage can. We don't need another experienced loser in the WH. Barack Obama is almost 50 years old, and had enough "experience" to call the Iraq war a "Stupid War" just as Bush was lying to us about WMD. So you may as well stop repeating the Biden comment, everyone understands that the two were campaiging for the same spot at the time. No one buys it, and no one wants another 4 years of republican destruction.

On the hook to big telecom lobbyists

Votes against women's equal pay and Violence Against Women act.
Will not restore our standing in the world

Posted by: julia c. | Aug 27, 2008 12:29:49 AM

Well I hate to beat a dead horse (or an elephant as the case may be) but actually, detailed polling shows that the smarter a person is, the more they know about the world, and the more they think the more likely they are to support Obama and therefore, it follows that the dumber they are, the less they know about the world, etc...

This is not suprising, there was a study done after the election in 2004, and it showed that more than 50% of the people who voted for Bush could not correctly identify his positions on most issues or those of John Kerry.

While more than 90% of Kerry supporters correctly identified both his positions and those of Bush.

Since people tend to project their own flaws onto others, I assume this "messianic" and "blindly following" chant coming from the Republicans is an attempt to distract their attention away from their own mindless devotion to a party that has run this country into the ground.

As for McCain, how can anyone know what his positions are since they change daily...

Posted by: momof2inTX | Aug 27, 2008 12:32:59 AM

"The opening night of the Democratic National Convention drew more than 22 million viewers, a 20% larger audience than in 2004, according to Nielsen Media Research." LA Times.

In other words. More people saw Michelle Obama this year than saw Barack Obama in 2004.

And all channels which carried it are up from 2004. Including PBS and ABC.

McCain has nothing to sell folks. He's all negative energy. Like the lady said tonight...MOVE ON. No Way. No How. No McCain.

I just do not understand why Obama is trying to suppress the ad connecting him to Ayers. If it is untrue, than just point out the facts and get over it instead of using brown shirt tactics by trying to take criminal action against American Issues Project who produced the ad. Obama attorneys to the Dept Of Justice: "We reiterate our request that the Department of Justice fulfill its commitment to take prompt action to investigate and to prosecute the American issues Project, and we further request that the Department of Justice investigate and prosecute Howard (sic) Simmons for a knowing and willful violation of the individual aggregate contribution limits,"All the Obama supporters seem to think Bush is some type of Hitler but if that were so, maybe Dan Rather should have gone to jail for his hit piece on Bush too, eh Obama ? I don't think Bush even suggested it, in order to maintain the civility he tried to bring to DC, that the democrats have consistently ignored No, the dems are not civil, do not play fair and suppress free speech. 3 strikes, you're out boys.By the way why is ABC and the rest of the main stream media not reporting on this? It is all over the Drudge Report.

You are just a dumbass... You Repuke-icans have no idea about loyalty to a party and a cause. All you guys do is try to cheat everyone and wreak havoc on the country! Just like your daddy Bush and your grandpa McSenile...

If Hillary would have won the nomination, I would have been behind her 100% because she is a DEMOCRAT!

And after Barack Obama and Joe Biden are elected and re-elected president in '08 & '12, I will back Hillary 110% in 2016!!!

You Repuke-lican evil doers have no loyalty to anything, but your own selfish greed.....

Obama/Biden '08!! Hillary 2016!!!!

momof2inTX, Going to college does not make you educated or smarter than anyone else. In fact just the opposite is true. Our educational system is full of leftists like Obama's friend unrepentant domestic terrorists Ayers whose goal is to indoctrinate people like you and make them good little slave of the State.

And as evidence of mindless devotion (and the mindless repetition of RNC propoganda) we note the distinct failure of any McCain posters to actually respond to what is being posted here.

Well it was nice (okay not nice, but interesting)wading through this intellectual cesspool, but back to more important things...

Oh and Tim, there are these things, they are called "laws" they are kind of like the rules that keep society in order. If people break them, you know, they should not be rewarded. I guess you missed that growing up.

I remember seeing another speech given in a stadium on a stage with tall columns as a backdrop. A lady named Riefenstahl was filming it.

OBAMA'S FRIENDS WERE JEREMIAH "GOD DAMN AMERICA"... And after 8 years of Bush, I agree with that. What would you say of a country that starts wars to satisfy the ego of its "presdint"... "God BLESS America"? I think not. I am voting for Obama in part because he associates with people who aren't afraid to say it out loud when our country is on its way to hell.
