McCain Jokes About House Gaffe on 'The Tonight Show'
August 25, 2008 9:51 PM
ABC News’ Ron Claiborne and Bret Hovell report: Sen. John McCain’s gaffe last week that he didn’t remember how many houses he owned with his wife Cindy became the source of much of the humor during his appearance on Jay Leno’s "The Tonight Show," Monday evening.
While McCain was still in the green room, Leno got the audience warmed up.
“Tropical Storm Fay has soaked Florida ... ruining thousands of homes, most of them belonging to John McCain,” Leno said during his monologue. “In fact, to make Sen. McCain feel at home tonight, I gave him 7 dressing rooms.”
After their opening segment together on the stage, Leno came back from a commercial break to ask McCain, “For $1 million, how many houses do you have?”
McCain answered by first citing his time as a POW in Vietnam.
“Could I just mention to you, Jay, that, at a moment of seriousness,” McCain began, “I spent five-and-a-half years in a prison cell. I didn't have a house. I didn't have a kitchen table. I didn't have a table. I didn't have a chair. And I didn't spend those five-and-a-half years because, not because I wanted to get a house when I got out.
“We spend our time in a condominium in Washington, in a condominium in Phoenix, sometime over here in the state of California, and we have a place up in northern Arizona,” McCain continued, explaining how his campaign got to the number four in the count. (McCain is being conservative: ABC News’s count is ten homes on eight properties.)
Leno and McCain also joked about the presumptive Republican nominee’s age –- next Friday, McCain will turn 72.
“It was this week in 1814, British troops set fire to the White House. Did you know that?” Leno said during his monologue. “The White House was saved, it was saved thanks to the actions of one brave young soldier, John McCain.”
McCain was in on the joke: “But also, you forgot to mention when I warned the people about the British coming,” McCain said to laughter.

Vietnam. We already heard the story.

John McSane that every thing is funny and can not relate to the average American becasue he is very clueless on the econmy issues so he joke about answering real question. This is not funny McShame American people are losing their homes and you have too many houses and can not remember how many

McShame use this story for every thing and can not relate to the average American because he is rich. What about now McShame the average Americans is tired of hearing your war storyline how about a story on the real issues the American people are facing.

i am having a hard time understanding why people are so concerned about something so trivial when we should open our eyes and remember what is happeninng in the "real world".
John McCain is in touch with what matters.....US, the American People

mccain is a rich nazi republican and he is so wrong for america.
Posted by: tom | Aug 25, 2008 10:42:48 PM
Ok....Now perhaps we all agreed to 1 point you cannot find perfect in a humman being. So all you Libs and all you Repub. please take all that nip picken out away from common sense would you? Why don't we just count the character of each candidate and if we do that John Mccain wins. Yes John Mccain is right he is a little out of tuoch because when the time Obama claims to be working class John Mccain was in N. Vietnam. It is hard to claim a working class when you're out there fighting enemies. Give me one thing we can't respect John Mccain on, his marriage of second wife? is that all we got.

gl,The first thing on McCain's agenda when he becomes president, is to expand the "no child left behind" so that people will be able to speak and write with proper grammer and improve on comprehensive reading programs so when liberals like you comment on blogs people will be able to understand what you are trying to say.
Posted by: S Adams | Aug 25, 2008 10:57:52 PM
Damn it!!!!!!So we have to pick someone poor to be President? These Libs just ain't getting it man!!!! Hey there's a homeless in downtown LA. maybe he's not out of tuoch!!!!!Give me a freakin break!!!!
Posted by: vegas | Aug 25, 2008 10:58:32 PM
Let's talk about McCain's "family values" and how his current marriage is the result of an affair he had whilst married to his FIRST wife. His current wife, Cindy, says she is an only child, when she actually has a half sister and a half brother. The McCains have no morals. Arg. I am...another republican for Obama.
Posted by: Monday | Aug 25, 2008 11:00:11 PM
ABC, what shills. McCain says he has 4 homes when he has at least 8, and they editorialize that McCain is just "being conservative" not that he is "lying" or at least "misinformed" or "misleading". Heaven forbid that Al Gore or Obama got a basic fact about themselves wrong. You can be sure that would not be characterized as just being "conservative."
Posted by: Ed | Aug 25, 2008 11:00:34 PM
all mccain does is make bad jokes talk about war (vietnam and iraq) and big oil. he is so out of touch with what is really concerning americans. it is the economy stupid. under mccains god king georges rule we have seen the working class become poor why the rich have becoem super rich. OBAMA 08

Barry Obama is not experienced to be president - the presidency is not something that lends itself to on the job training.

"...when most American people have lost their only house..."
What nonsense. Some 70% of Americans own their own home. I am one of the ones who worked and saved for a home, buying my first one when I was 21. I moved up three times, and we now own our current home free and clear. That's the American way. Much better than whining.
Posted by: Bruce Small | Aug 25, 2008 11:03:34 PM
Everyone knows he didn't have a house when he was a POW, he's using that POW thing again. Thanks John for your service but that was long ago and just admit that you married rich and you are forunate to have many homes. Say something like here's my plan to help build back our economy so all americans have at least one home. go maverick (yea right, he doesnt care)
Posted by: Nicole | Aug 25, 2008 11:04:34 PM
s adams----well yes we need to fund our schools better so our kids get better education but king george cut all funding to americans so he could wage war and give his rich buddies huge tax cuts....and mccain wants to expand on that? man the republican party is so out of touch with what matters, and that is the working class and there suffering under king george.
Posted by: tom | Aug 25, 2008 11:05:09 PM

Only ignorant people call McCain "McShame." McCain has decades of service to America. The real shame is Obama's empty resume.
Posted by: bill williams | Aug 25, 2008 11:12:16 PM
vegas-- i agree with spacerook1, mccain dumped his ex-wife so he could marry a rich woman half his age so he could go into politics with her family money and family influence. sad truely sad, obams is what america is about he was born poor and thru his hardwork he is going to be our next president, now that is character.
Posted by: tom | Aug 25, 2008 11:13:48 PM
The Obamites are so midguided. Keep believing what you want, but the realist know that no president will want the warmonger legacy of George Bush. McCain will end this war, and God willing bring peace and unity to our country. In case you missed it, McCain and Bush are not friends and McCain has disagreed with Bush more than he has agreed. That is why McCain is having a hard time with the conservative base. This country was doing well under Bush until DNC-Do Nothing Congress took over 2 yrs ago. If you want to blame anyone for our problems, blame Pelosi, whose first order when she became Speaker was to veto every bill Bush tried to pass, even when it was good for the economy. It is their vindictiveness and hate for the Republicans that is hurting our country. Obama's tax plan will do more harm than good, I guess we will never know though because America will never elect an ultra-liberal, with terrorist friends to the presidency.

Posted by: GLock | Aug 25, 2008 11:19:50 PM
McCain is the best person for president because he knows how to pick a fight with other nations of the world and start a war. What does Obama know about starting a war? That's what its all about man, war and military power. Obama keep talking about strengthening the economy and world peace. Who cares about that! Military power is more important than economic power and most of us Americans are smart and we know that. All this talk about people losing jobs, and jobs being shipped overseas and gas costing $3 a gallon is not true..its a figment of people's imagination. The Republican party is the best for America..can't you see how strong the economy is right now? The American dollar is the strongest currency in the world. China and Japan owe us trillions of Dollars..and we are running on a surplus..no deficit.. and most of us Americans are very happy and contented. Why would I want to change from a Republican leadership to Democrat when the country is so prosperous! Why would I want to change that? McCain is brilliant, articulate, strong and does not change his mind(sign of strength). Its military power and war that matters not economic power..I am so glad that most Americans understand that so we can vote McCain into office to continue the prosperity. Vote McCain for continued prosperity and war! Now, can someone pass me my glass of spiked koolaid! Thank you very much! I don't feel bad because most Americans think like I do and that is why McCain is going to win in November. Vote McCain, feel the pain and don't complain!

s-adams-----i agree with you mccain use to go against bush at every step, but now mccain is lock step with bush.. mccain use to be against drilling for oil now he is for it he use to be against privatizing s.s. now he is for it he use to be against the huge tax cut for the super wealthy noe he is for it he use to be for reforming nafta now he is all for giving away our american jobs....that is why he si bad for america he has sold out to the neo-con nazi party.

I don't care how many homes the McCains bought and own with their own money. At least they did not have a criminal/friend/supporter named Rezko who saved the Obama's $350,000 on his Chicago mansion. This should be considered illegal since Rezko used tax payer money for his illegal activity and support of Obama.
Don't think tonights' speeches convinced any voter to change their mind. Just more empty wordy speeches.
Look at his successes, not his words.

Mrs. McSame stole drugs from the charity she was volunteering for!! Who steals from people who have nothing! Starving children in villages she was charged to help and SHE STEALS FROM THEM. A women with MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in her name!! And she's not worth a dime!! Why is this not a character flaw? Who dumps a wife that stayed by their side for those FIVE LONG YEARS while they were in that prison in Hanoi? Who could cheat on their wife because he lacked the COURAGE to say he no longer loved her?!
If you think that these are signs of a good leader and his spouse, then you have to be just as morally bankrupt as they are!!
Posted by: Morris | Aug 25, 2008 11:28:34 PM
McCain is brilliant and Obama is not! Its as simple as that. The latest poll show that McCain is up by about 5 points. He is the best America has to offer and I'm so proud of John McCain. He will continue the prosperity. McCain is wiser because he's older..he's been around for a long, long time and he cares about America..don't worry the fact that he said he does not know anything about the economy..Its not economic power that matters it military power..I know I am right because most Americans agree with me..and they'll show it this coming November. McCain care about the poor, Obama does not, McCain care about everyone and Obama does not. So hop on board Hillary supporters and support McCain because he would continue the prosperity..Obama would just make America poor again. I am proud of you Hillary supporters..you are so smart..I believe you are the wisest electorate out there. Let give McCain the vote and make him president! He deserves it! and more importantly, he will continue strong economy that we have. I hope nobody on this blog is mad at me..I am simply saying how most of America feel..I'll be vindicated in November! McCain 08!

The 'tortured prisoner of war' card is every bit as ugly as the 'race card'.
Why does he play the tortured prisoner of war card? Is that some kind of presidential training I'm unfamiliar with? A presidential proving grounds of sorts?
In the wilds of Darwinland, McCain is the slow old bull, already gone, he just doesn't know it yet.
Posted by: HeyYou | Aug 25, 2008 11:30:10 PM
hey Bruce Small, that was a different time, yes everyone should work hard to own there home, but I'm sure when your brought your home(s) gas was $3 or $4 a gallon and there wasnt a mortgage crisis and the economy was in a much better state. Most people want to work hard and have the American dream but when people like McCains' croonies sending jobs to other countries and thinking about there already over-flowing pockets instead of their country.
Posted by: Nicole | Aug 25, 2008 11:34:15 PM
All this 'War Hero's stuff on McCain is lot of bull. Vietnam war was an unnecessary war. Vietnam didn't attack America. Why Did America wage this war? This war killed far too many innocent people because of egotistic and arrogant Americans like John McCain. I find it disturbing that he is called a war hero. He is a POW and doesn't make him a hero by any measure. If only Americans had an iota of humanity and decency, tey would stop calling this man a 'War Hero' He is nothing but a blood thirsty war monger. I am not sure how many young vietnamese women and children he raped and molested.

spacerook1...
You are exactly correct! And he does this because the media and America allows him to do so. There are PLENTY of questions and rebuttal about that time spent as being not so accurate.
Here again is the mixed message the media fails to miss. He doesn't support GI Bills, benefit upgrades, laws against torture, etc... How many POWs have comeback and own 8-10 homes???? He was a poor pilot who barely made it and was shot down in his limited history of successful flighing. McCain calls Obama a celebrity but yet where was McCain? Again?
Posted by: Greg | Aug 25, 2008 11:35:32 PM

DEFENDING AMERICA
BY DAVID H. HACKWORTH
ARE McCAIN'S HANDLERS PLAYING THE WRONG CARD?
John McCain is being hailed by the press as a "genuine war hero." But is he a war hero in the conventional sense like Audie Murphy and John Glenn? Or is his "war hero" status the creation of a very slick publicity campaign that plays on flag, duty, honor and country?
For sure, McCain has the fruit-salad -- a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service gongs. On a purely medal count basis, he out-weighs Murphy and Glenn, who both for years repeatedly performed extraordinary deeds on the ground or in the air against an armed enemy.
McCain's valor awards are based on what happened in 1967, when during his 23d mission over Vietnam, he was shot down, seriously injured, captured and then spent 5 1/2 brutal years as a POW.
In an attempt to find out exactly what the man did to earn these many hero awards, I asked his Senate office three times to provide copies of the narratives for each medal. I'm still waiting. I next went to the Pentagon. Within a week, I received a recap of his medals and many of the narratives that give the details of what he did. None of the awards, less the DFC, were for heroism over the battlefield -- where he spent no more than 20 hours. Two Naval officers described the awards as "boilerplate" and "part of an SOP medal package given to repatriated (Vietnam-era) POWs."
McCain's Silver Star narrative for the period 27 October 1967 -- the day after he was shot down -- to 8 December 1968 reads: "His captors… subjected him to extreme mental and physical cruelties in an attempt to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes. Through his resistance to those brutalities, he contributed significantly towards the eventual abandonment…" of such harsh treatment by the North Vietnamese. Yet in McCain's own words just four days after being captured, he admits he violated the U.S. Code of Conduct by telling his captors "O.K, I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital."
A Vietnam vet detractor says, "He received the nation's third highest award, the Silver Star, for treason. He provided aid and comfort to the enemy!" The rest of his valor awards -- issued automatically every year while he was a POW -- read much like the Silver Star. More boilerplate often repeating the exact same words. An example: "By his heroic endeavors, exceptional skill, and devotion to duty, he reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Naval Service and the United States Armed Forces."
Yet McCain's conduct while a POW negates these glowing comments. The facts are that he signed a confession and declared himself a "black criminal who performed deeds of an air pirate." This statement and other interviews he gave to the Communist press were used as propaganda to fan the flames of the anti-war movement.
Accounts by McCain and other writers tell of the horror he endured: relentlessly beatings, torture, broken limbs. All inflicted during savage interrogations. Yet no other POW was a witness to these accounts. A former POW says "No man witnessed another man during interrogations… We relied on each other to tell the truth when a man was returned to his cell." The U.S. Navy says two eye-witnesses are required for any award of heroism. But for the valor awards McCain received, there are no eye-witnesses, less himself and his captors. And they're not talking.
Our POWs in Vietnam were treated appallingly. The Viets would either break a POW or kill him. POWs provided info beyond name, rank and serial number or they didn't come back.
Based on these stalwart men's horrific experiences, the Code of Conduct has been changed. A POW says, "Now the training is to give them something… don't risk permanent damage to health, mind or body."
McCain refused an early release. An act of valor? Three former POWs told me he was ordered to turn it down by his U.S. POW commander and he "just followed orders."
McCain certainly doesn't appear to be a war hero by conventional standards, but rather a tough survivor whose handlers are overplaying the war hero card.

Kanan, hey....hey....hey calm down man what the hell is getting to you man are you mad? Here's a little medicine for you man first he is a war hero because he served this country first and his life comes second. Second he was ready to take on the duty he was volunteer to do (right or wrong). Third he did not get out of prison in N VN because of Moral and character. Perhaps you liberals don't find that as a war hero is because you never found a Liberal that have the same values, and if people are not like you then that does not exist.

I grew up middle-class. Neither I nor any of my friends were able to go to Harvard. My Mom had to work and did not get to stay at home with me and my brother like Michele Obama's. Did they get to Harvard because they were minorities? Also, all this community work. They were paid!!! Also Barack Obama had a book deal when he left Harvard. He had an advance and a fellowship. He did several months of the writing in Bali. Such a tough life they have had. They are millionaires and out of touch!!

I do not understand how Obama think he can be president of the United States! He's not even white! That's the fact..you have to be anglo saxon with an anglo saxon sounding name..Even white ethnic names would not cut with the wise electorate. Let's admit the truth..cause only the truth will set us free! It was a good run for Obama..some white voters played the little game and voted for him knowing quite well that in November they are going to vote for someone who looks like them..I don't think that's racist..that is prejudice and prejudice is not wrong..its natural! I am African American but I believe in telling the truth and being honest..I do not cry racism for every little thing. McCain is going to win in November for one reason and one reason only, he's white and more white people go to the polls..people of color don't vote but complain after. That's the truth!

You mean like comparing Obama to Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears? Give me a break. And his making fun of his age is getting as old as he is. Does he think that by doing it himself it blunts it? It doesn't. And this crazy old man keeps bringing up this POW Crap and I'm sick of it. He brings it up every time his met with a tough question. He's too old and too stupid to be president. Period!

All of these candidates are friends in real life. Don't forget that.

Who cares how many houses the McCains worked hard to buy with honest funds.
I have a huge problem with how Obama bought his million home with felon Tony Rezko. Who knows how crooked that deal was?

He's a demented old man and he's not funny. The only thing he's ready for is a retirement village and a pack of depends! They put out their stupid ads and then say that they're just joking and trying to add humor. Well, take a look at the economy. What the hell is so funny!
Posted by: roxanne | Aug 25, 2008 11:57:42 PM
hey vegas, why is when you (right wing nuts) are asked a question you never answer the question, you start blabbing about something totally off topic. You would perfer a mistress turned wife who never worked hard because money was handed down to her, who also stole medicine from under priviliged children?

S Adams: Exactly.
To paraphrase a quote from Obama:
"We live in the greatest country in the world, and I'm going to do my very best to change it."
That about says it all for me.

You can bad mouth McCain all you want but none of you have the guts he has or has earned the respect he enjoys today becuase of his work for all Americans.
That is why when it all over said and done he will be our next president. What I don't understand is why he would go thought all this crap to get it. He doesn't need it? Could it be he cares about America -- NOOOOOOOOOOOO that to easy - he wants to be hated for 4 years by all the democrats that must be the answer.

ObamasNemesis - There is not polls report MCshame have any lead.

I'm an "oldster" but still remember many things and many presidents. Most were ok but some were not. Opinion: Washington was the best (Father of our country) and GW Bush the worst so far. If Obama has to learn the job of being president, he should do better than GW Bush who holds the record for screwing up most everything--using policies of the Republican administration. Chances are that a vote for McCain would be a vote for 8 more years of Bush. Nuf sed.

McShame alway trying to get the spotlight, but he is boring. He have to capationize on getting coverage when Obama is getting it.
Posted by: gl | Aug 26, 2008 12:10:40 AM
McCain was really on-message, wasn't he? He got across that he's really rich and really, really old. Oh yeah, I almost forgot...he reminded America for the millionth time that he was a POW.
Posted by: Patrick | Aug 26, 2008 12:11:37 AM
Stanley - He is going to need more than old white men. Same mistake Hilliary made only reaching out the whites is a lose. You needs all race and you white people think too highly of yourself. You racist better get use to having a black President becasue it is just a moment away. Stanley you are a white racist and there are alot of you guys out here tonight becasue you know the White man will not be running the White House this time around!

Sorry John, it's not funny, you are out of touch - you don't know the economy, you don't know computers and you have no idea what the lives of us poor working schucks are like.
Barack is a class act. He's smart, he's an excellent manager - ran an incredible team to beat the Clintons.
John - you are the half baked solution to the sad state the current administration has lowered republican expectations.. there's a reason democratic voter registration is surging, it's just plain time for a change of heart.
Posted by: Citizen Voter | Aug 26, 2008 12:16:02 AM
ObamasNemesis - By all your comments I can tell you are so worry and you need to be becasue Obama, who is a black man, will be our next President. your racist WHITE PEOPLE EAT YOUR HEART OUT!
Posted by: gl | Aug 26, 2008 12:16:37 AM
McCain has been cozying up to disaffected Clinton supporters, but I don't understand their affinity for him.
Where was the love when asked during the Republican Primaries by one his supporters, "How do we beat the b*tch?" Instead of defending Hillary, McCain laughed and said, "But that's an excellent question."
The Clinton supporters must have very selecting memories of the slights to her during the campaign.

Mr McCain, we're tired of your stupid jokes. We don't need more clowns in the White House.
You aren't funny, but senile. You just can't hide no more that you're losing your memory. You're getting into dementia, Mr McCain. You bordered Iraq to Afghanistan, Sunnis for you are Shiites, and you made Putin president of Germany, and give our land to Georgians. Your wonder land is Czechoslovakia. You're the one you can't lead.

The POW story may work well in a campaign but not so much if he becomes President.
Posted by: cincyr | Aug 26, 2008 12:18:10 AM
You know mccain actually cheapens his POW experience and the many other American servce men who were also POWs by using it as a constant political crutch.
What? The man is above ALL critism because he was a POW? If that's the case and that seems to be his only qualification perhapes he should run for President of his local VFW as opposed to President of the United States.
