McCain VP Contender Palin in Alaska, Not Ohio
August 29, 2008 8:54 AM
ABC News' Kate McCarthy reports: As vice presidential speculation swirls, Gov. Sarah Palin is watching the fireworks from her home in Wasilla, Alaska.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is in Dayton, Ohio, awaiting a high noon event at which the campaign has said the Republican contender will announce his running mate.
All eyes are on a short list of contenders including Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Govs. Mitt Romney and Tom Ridge, Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Palin.
But the possibility of a surprise pick also looms as the McCain camp remains mum at this hour about just who will be joining their candidate on stage in battleground Ohio.
But one person who will not be there: Palin. The governor's spokesperson, Sharon Leighow, tells ABC News she's going to the State Fair in Anchorage, Alaska.
Stay tuned...

Well that is good to hear.

She and Pawlenty are BOTH spending the day at State Fairs?

Where does ABC get their news? Man they are stupid. Yes, she was seen in Ohio last night by many spotters.
ABC... wake up. You are dumb.

MILF I can believe in!
Wooohooo!

LOL @ Choogle's comment. I hate the term MILF, but Palin is definitely one.
Posted by: John | Aug 29, 2008 9:09:27 AM
Don't know much about Palin. My cynical side wants to tell me McCain is just reaching out to women, as we haven't heard this name before and she seemed to show up on the "list" immediately after another woman dropped off.
But who knows. Anyone know anything about her?
I'll tell you the Republican woman I'd like to see run - Whitman. But she'd never get the nomination, probably for the same reasons I like her.
Posted by: Paul | Aug 29, 2008 9:09:40 AM
Oh, she's a MILF? That might explain why McCain is "reaching out" to her.
Maybe those old Tailhook instincts are kicking in.
Posted by: Paul | Aug 29, 2008 9:11:16 AM
What kind of hop-head still like Whitman? She blows!

Posted by: PALIN ROCKS | Aug 29, 2008 9:12:44 AM
Has anyone thought that maybe, just maybe, ABC News got it wrong and the Blogs got it right?
If the blogs are correct, ABC News can become irrelevant.
Posted by: Boomba | Aug 29, 2008 9:12:48 AM
Supposedly her office confirmed she's in Alaska to Dana Bash. I hope that's a lie.
What confirmation from spotters do you have?
Posted by: JG | Aug 29, 2008 9:13:08 AM
Maybe as President of the Senate she can help open up ANWR...
Posted by: Don H. | Aug 29, 2008 9:13:21 AM
I like her upside, haven't seen her backside yet.
Posted by: Choogle | Aug 29, 2008 9:13:26 AM
Well, Palin would be the most conservative of all the prospects mentioned. And wins battles over Liberals in Alaska. Lack of recognition is one problem. But she IS an up and coming Conservative, but it may take a lot to get her to leave Alaska. I know it would me too.

This is a cheap attempt for Mccain to appeal to women. He probably has never talked to this woman until now.

I can't stand the suspence.......
I was already making my McCain/Palin yarmulke.
I guess I'll start embroidering my McCain/Lieberman yarmulke.

Posted by: roger | Aug 29, 2008 9:15:18 AM
Palin is a mother of five, including a child with Down Syndrome that she chose to give birth to and raise rather than aborting. She's a SOLID Conservative and pro-life woman who has done a LOT to clean up corruption in Alaska (remember the bridge to nowhere?) Hopefully she is the choice if it can't be Romney. She'd be a good VP and get both the pro-life Conservative vote as well as the votes from the masses of angry and bitter Hillary supporters who can't support Obama.
Posted by: macbus | Aug 29, 2008 9:15:54 AM
Looks like ABC's been had...lets all point and laugh at them when Palin is at the podium in a few hours.
Posted by: Tony Q | Aug 29, 2008 9:16:47 AM
The reporter was able to get a statement from the Governor's spokesperson at 4:00 am Alaska time?
Posted by: Drew | Aug 29, 2008 9:16:54 AM
Don't care who it is. I'm a Democrat supporting McCain. Not all Democrats are left-wing nuts who overlook radical associations, wacked out churches that spout anti-American garbage and an angry wife who can barely conceal her contempt for her own country. McCain's not perfect, but he sure does look good compared to the alternative.

I hope her spokespeople are just blowing smoke. I have been reading about Sarah Palin for a few months now and I like everything about her. For a few minutes there, I thought I had a reason to be excited about the Republican ticket. Please make it be so.....
Posted by: Jackie | Aug 29, 2008 9:19:00 AM
The VP is Tim Pawlenty. I am in Ohio and saw him get off the plane holding up his fingers signifying the V sign.
Posted by: Scott | Aug 29, 2008 9:19:11 AM
Either ABC or the governor's spokesperson is a fact bungler with, "The Governor's spokesperson, Sharon Leighow, tells ABC News she's going to the State Fair in Anchorage, Alaska."
Well the State Fair in Alaska is held in Wasilla, Alaska and I'm guessing the Gov's spokesperson knows that.
Posted by: Spudman | Aug 29, 2008 9:19:21 AM
Not sure if we should read too much into Palin being in Alaska tonight. There's a 4 hour time difference between Ohio and Alaska, she could easily be back in Alaska this evening after a Noon appearance in Ohio.
Posted by: John | Aug 29, 2008 9:19:32 AM
She would be a terrible choice. 2 years of experience as a governor and we should believe she can step right in to the presidency if needed = completely undercuts McCain's best argument, that Obama doesn't have the necessary experience. Hard to believe McCain would make such a stupid decision
Posted by: Horrible idea | Aug 29, 2008 9:20:53 AM
All facts seem to indicate that Palin flew into Ohio. In fact, here's the flight data: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N222GY
Posted by: Bob M | Aug 29, 2008 9:21:18 AM
How dumb are u people! First off people at the airport didn't know who the person was. Secondly why would she land in Cincinatti if the announcements going to be in Dayton. Geeeez!

logs: Palin was 1st runner-up in a state level beauty pageant. I'd say that classifies as an attractive woman. I'm a 36 year old soccer mom from Georgia and even I recognize that Palin is an attractive person. She's a mom of five kids and a Governor. That's pretty cool. By the way, it isn't only "repubs" that find her attractive. Many Dems think she's attractive as well.
Frankly - who cares if she's attractive? All I care about is a strong VP that would make a good Pres. if something happens to President McCain.
Posted by: Stephanie from GA | Aug 29, 2008 9:22:59 AM
She's not on the Alaska State Fair's Daily Schedule. I'm betting on the blogs; I'm betting she's the pick; I'm betting, despite her inexperience, she'll make it a tighter race.
Posted by: leolabeth | Aug 29, 2008 9:23:39 AM
Where is Kay Bailey? She's my choice for VP!!!!
Posted by: Ken | Aug 29, 2008 9:23:39 AM
If this were true, I can't imagine how Palin wouldn't be offended, honestly. This pick would be as transparent as they come, and an obvious attempt to appeal to women.
Posted by: Paul | Aug 29, 2008 9:23:56 AM
I wish he would pick Kaye Bailey Hutchinson from Texas but I guess Palin will do. Don't know much about her but at least she's female and I like that!!
Posted by: lizathome | Aug 29, 2008 9:24:47 AM

beck: "Doesn't matter, McCain is an empty suite and I would never in my life time for this man into office."
Really beck? McCain is an empty suit? Kid, Obama suit's so empty if Michelle didn't leave the hanger in it'd crumble on stage. Obama's so unqualified for President that his resume can be written on a cocktail napkin. Obama's not a candidate, he's a human sock puppet and if you look real close you can see Howard Dean's hand up his ass working the controls.
Seriously beck, you don't really want to start comparing Obama's Resume with McCain's. I mean Obama's paper on "What I did on my Summer Vacation" written in the 3rd grade may make for compelling reading if you're one of the CHOSEN ONE's faithful, but it hardly compares to McCain talking about what he did in the Senate that same year. Lordy I knew you O-bots were shameless thugs, but this pathetic attempt to build a straw-man is, well, simply pathetic. The concept of running against McCain-Palin must really have you lot peeing down your pant leg.
Posted by: Maurice | Aug 29, 2008 9:25:47 AM
Don't rule out Congressman John Boehner who represents Dayton, Ohio in Congress(Ohio's 8th Congressional district). He's the former House Majority leader. He wasn't seen at the Dayton airport last night greeting McCain, even though they're close friends.
Posted by: Ken | Aug 29, 2008 9:26:09 AM
Michael Steele would be the perfect running mate in my opinion, but I'll take Palin. She will run circles around the most intelligent man in the world, Joe Biden.
Posted by: ItIsMarine | Aug 29, 2008 9:26:13 AM
ABC= All Barack Channel.
B. O. {something Stinks) loses in a LandSlide. 6th one for the GOP in 40 years. None, ZERO, ZIP for the Donkeys in the same time period. They only win, when they convince the dumb masses that they are Conservative. See Jimmy Carpenter, & BUUBA.
Posted by: d | Aug 29, 2008 9:26:53 AM
Palin will generate media attention and interest, something McCain needs.
She brings conservative credentials to shore up the base, also something McCain needs. She is a Washington outsider, never a bad thing. If McCain is a one term President we would have a Palin vs. Clinton match in 4 years--interesting!
Posted by: JC | Aug 29, 2008 9:26:54 AM
If they are trying to keep the news from getting out early what do you expect her office to say.."We dont know where she is, last time we saw her she was heading for the airport in the middle of the night"

Please stop talking about the woman's looks. I thought all the sexists were in the democratic party.
Posted by: dazey | Aug 29, 2008 9:28:08 AM
Palin seems like a good choice, but, then again, she admits she once did POT!
As all good Republicans know, pot is a gateway drug that inevitably leads to LSD and Opium and makes you go crazy.
Palin should be arrested and thrown in jail for her dangerous drug habits.
Posted by: Adam | Aug 29, 2008 9:28:21 AM
First of all Boomba...abc has been irrelevent for a long time.
Second Looks like the republicans are once again more disciplined than the dems. No leaks a day before the announcement. It's 2 and a half hours before his speech in ohio and people still aren't sure who he picked
Posted by: smarter than dems | Aug 29, 2008 9:28:39 AM
Sarah Palin is not as experienced in government as McCain but maybe that is why she would be second on the ticket instead of at the top, like the equally inexperienced Obama. Meg Whitman would also be a great choice but nobody knows how she would do debating. She is the only self-made female billionaire I've heard of. Millions of women make a living on eBay and would know about her.
Posted by: Mike K | Aug 29, 2008 9:29:04 AM
At a time when McCain's VP has to be ready to be President, Sarah Palin has barely established herself as a governor. There's no way she's ready for the national stage.
Anybody who supports Palin simply because she's a woman, especially with her staunch pro-life views, is short-sighted.
Clinton supporters who are more likely to vote for McCain because of Palin obviously didn't hear a word Hillary said, or have no respect for what Hillary said.
Posted by: Mike O | Aug 29, 2008 9:29:13 AM
Wow, you wingers are crazy if you think there's an upside here, IF she's the pick. She brings in maybe 1% of Hillary supporters who the Dems lost anyway. No foreign policy experience, no significant achievements, up to her ears in Ted Steven's scandals... And to top it off, Biden will tear her apart in a debate. Please, Please let it be her... Women aren't stupid, and won't vote McCain, he's stated he'll overturn Roe.
Posted by: hee hee | Aug 29, 2008 9:30:07 AM
Regarding the Palin at the State Fair issue. I do believe the State Fair ended on August 22. That would be a week ago. Speculate away folks!!
Posted by: BobbyB | Aug 29, 2008 9:30:30 AM
A statement like "Wake up ABC. You are dumb" is very odd since they are a part of the left wing, mainstream media that is backing this Hussein Obama hysteria. It's a given they are. But I guess it's good to remind them every now and then that not everyone subscribes to their idiotic fantasies. ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR, PBS, CNN, MSNBC and the lot don't have a clue as to what "real news" is. They only manufacture "news" (sans Rather and CBS and NPR) and give their opinions which is not "news". Hence their fascination with Obama, and their unabashed backing of this God like creature.
I think Condoleezza Rice would be the perfect choice for McCain's VP, but I don't believe he has that much intelligence in his entire staff to choose someone of her caliber. 2nd place should go to Mitt Romney. Without either one of those two, Hussein is in the White House in 2½ months.

PLUS, her oldest son is about to be deployed to Iraq. She's a whistle blower and reformer who isn't afraid taking on any govt. agency or business to cut waste. Her popularity rating in Alaska was 80% as of July 2008! This is very bad news for JoeBama campaign.

Really? Because her two years as Governor of Alaska, that's 24 months of executive experience where she shows up for work every day, is somehow inferior to Obama's two years in the US Senate which equatest to fewer than 150 days of actual work experience. Again, you O-bots are grasping at straws here. If the Palin story scares you so much why not just threaten ABC with criminal prosecution like you did all those TV stations when they aired the Ayers add. Or alternately you could just have the reporter assaulted and arrested like you did to the ABC reporter in Denver.
You know for a group that calls themselves Democrats, you lot really don't know much about actual democracy. thug Fascism you know, democracy not so much.

ABC News are idiots. Palin is in Ohio. If McCain picks her it's over. She's HAWT, mostly conservative (she has a somewhat pro-gay-rights message but otherwise very conservative), loves guns, did I mention she's HAWT? What's not to like?

Posted by: Jake | Aug 29, 2008 9:34:26 AM
What a sad sight, poor McCain thinks himself so weak a candidate that he has to pander to women.
The Republicans actually think women so stupid, that they only followed Hillary because she was a woman, and I willing to look past the completely contradiction in ideas and values and vote (R). What an insufferable ass.
Posted by: RevoltOfTheGuard | Aug 29, 2008 9:34:46 AM
Some real idiots posting here. Like the one that doesn't know how close Dayton and Cinci are. Or the other that tries to downplay Palins's 2 years of executive experience NOT in Washington DC and her accomplishments. Compare that to the 143 do nothing days of Senate (Non-executive) experience of the Messiah, prior to running for President. I still think it is possible for it to be Palin and that would put the final nail in the Messiah's cross.
BTW, is it hilarious or not that Obamabots are mimicking the "empty suit" description of the Messiah? Liberals are juvenile and remind me of Pee Wee Herman saying. "I know you are but what am I?' LMAO!!!
Posted by: ricardo maxwell | Aug 29, 2008 9:34:56 AM
I have heard her name several times, its just that she isn't well known like Romney or Liberman...
Ive wanted Palin for months now and I hope its her!!! What a wonderful pick. I dont think it is for the woman aspect of it.. she was mentioned months ago because she is for drilling in Alaska and for other alternative fuels.
Posted by: Alisha Adkins | Aug 29, 2008 9:34:58 AM
It's not Palin, but she wouldn't help the ticket even if she was. She's got a personal corruption scandal going on right no, plus she's anti-choice, so she won't attarct any women. The more I read about the more of C___ she appears to be. It's going to be Lieberman.
Posted by: Ken S. | Aug 29, 2008 9:35:08 AM
Sarah Palin as the VP pick would have more experience at the bottom of the republican ticket than the Dems have at the top!

Huh. Okay.

Have at it.
Or a guy who was chomping at the bit to invade Iraq, and who announced Iraq as a "second phase" of the war, on the David Letterman show, in October 2001 (more than a year before Bush says he made that decision).
What can I say. Its your vote.

Do we have it confirmed that she's in Alaska? Or are we assuming that because the spokesman said she was going to the state fair today? She could quite possibly go to the state fair tonight and be in Dayton earlier in the day.
Posted by: KB | Aug 29, 2008 9:39:22 AM
hee hee, You don't see an upside for McCain? You O-bots are either stupid, insane, or scared crapless. Oh, and that "1% of Hillary supporters who the Dems lost anyway" was, last time Gallup checked earlier this week closer to 20% of her voters. Let's see, I know they removed MATH from the DNC requirement for membership - had to, too many Democratic plans just don't add up - but FYI, 20% would be close to 3.6 million Clinton voters, that would effectively be a swing of 7.2 million votes in an election - -3.6 million of Obama, +3.6 million for McCain. I'm curious - you guys think you can get enough dead people, felons, and illegal aliens to compensate for that vote loss?
Posted by: Maurice | Aug 29, 2008 9:39:44 AM
Bob M,
The airport that she was reported to fly into was in Middletown, OH which is 27 miles from Downtown Dayton or 30 miles by car. Do you wish to take back that those bloggers are dumb who reported this. Heck, JFK is about that far to Midtown Manhattan in NYC! I hope that was her on the plane. She seems to be a good choice to me.

Palin's name was floated as a possible VP choice months ago. I thought it was a good choice back then, and now I think it's an even better choice. Romney would be ok, but McCain needs something historical to take his campaign to close to even with Obama's historical rise.
