Nader: Obama Not Black Prez He Hoped For

August 06, 2008 11:47 AM

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader ripped Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., on Wednesday, saying that the presumptive Democratic nominee would not make the kind of African-American president that he and other members of the civil rights movement worked to make possible.

"People who have fought the civil rights battle -- politically, economically, legally -- as we have since the 50's would often talk about, 'Look what would happen if we had an African-American president or chairpersons of major congressional committees,'" said Nader. "It doesn't look like it's going to be what we all thought it would be."

"I lost respect for him," Nader said of Obama "when I saw him over a year ago on C-SPAN vigorously opposed to the impeachment of Bush and Cheney -- vigorously opposed. He said it would be 'divisive'. That is a cop out word. We have the most multiply impeachable presidency in American history."

Nader made his comments at a breakfast with reporters in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor. It was not the first time that the perennial presidential candidate has been critical of the Democrat who would be the nation's first African-American president. Back in June, in an interview with the Rocky Mountain News, Nader accused Obama of downplaying poverty issues, trying to "talk white" and appealing to "white guilt" during his run for the White House.

The liberal consumer rights activist has become a pariah among many in the Democratic Party who blame him for tipping the closely contested 2000 election from then-Vice President Al Gore to then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush by winning 97,421 votes in the State of Florida.

Nader portrayed Obama's recent softening of his opposition to off-shore drilling as part of a broader effort to blur his differences with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Nader charged that the "blurring" that Obama is engaged in would prove to be a "fatal mistake."

"That's part of his blurring," said Nader, referring to Obama's new stance on drilling. "His handlers said, 'McCain is scoring here.' So he blurs, he blurs."

Obama told a Florida newspaper last week that he would be willing to compromise his opposition to off-shore drilling if it were necessary to win congressional approval of a broader overhaul focused on renewable sources of energy.

Nader said that he is making his third run for president in order to challenge a two-party system that he thinks has become "homogenized" by corporate power.

Nader identified seven areas as core differences with Obama and McCain: (1) a willingness to investigate corporate crime, fraud and abuse; (2) a commitment to a universal health-care system in which the government, not private companies, acts as the insurer; (3) a commitment to cutting a "bloated" military budget; (4) support for the impeachment and possible prosecution of President Bush and Vice President Cheney; (5) a living wage of $10/ hour; (6) a tax overhaul which would target Wall Street speculation; and (7) a commitment to making ballot access easier for candidates who do not belong to the two major parties.

Not Prez of any color, shade, gender anyone who has some brain would hope for.

Obama isn't black enough for... Ralph Nader?

Lol, what?

Posted by: Paul | Aug 6, 2008 12:05:46 PM

Obama vigorously opposed to the impeachment of Bush and Cheny -- vigorously opposed. He said it would be 'divisive'. That is a cop out word.
====

Defending the Constitution is not a matter of 'divisiveness', Mr. Constitutional Law "professor". Hundreds of thousands people lost their lives in the Civil War to make this phony empty head possible. Yet, he defends Bush for fear of "divisive".

In case you cannot comprehend, Mr. Constitution prof, impeachment by definition is divisive.

Paul,

Late today. You? Hope you will change your mind today.

Posted by: fact check | Aug 6, 2008 12:10:13 PM

"Hope you will change your mind today."

Lol. We both know that isn't going to happen. In fact (no pun intended), I'd like to know if anyone ever changed their political opinion based on these message boards. But that aside, it is fun, huh?

Posted by: Paul | Aug 6, 2008 12:14:30 PM

Nader's just looking for attention by attacking Obama. He's adopting McCain's strategy to do that as well. Nader's been running every election. This guy's ridiculous.

Posted by: Chris | Aug 6, 2008 12:15:55 PM

I don't think he is there to be a black president, I think he is there to be the United State of American President.

Posted by: Nelson | Aug 6, 2008 12:17:07 PM

Nader is becoming more & more ignoraqble.
Obama would do good not to respond except the MSM is going to parade Nader around for the next 2 days

Paul - Maybe tomorrow then, after the empty head airs something really really offensive, even to you.

This is a lame attempt for Nader to get free publicity at Obama's expense.

agreeing with Nader gives someone a lot of credibility...lol

this guy has become a parody of himself just wants face time

Paul -

Look what you got in your choice!

A vigorously defender of Bush and Cheney, who supports Cheney's oil pals, putting aside his sworn duty of defending and protecting the Constitution.

Posted by: fact check | Aug 6, 2008 12:23:26 PM

fact: "Maybe tomorrow then, after the empty head airs something really really offensive, even to you."

McCain is coming out with another ad so soon?

Posted by: Paul | Aug 6, 2008 12:24:26 PM

Really Nader... I find it interesting that you sat around picturing what a black president should look like.
One thing that he forgot... Obama is not black, he is black and white, I guess you can say he is gray! Maybe that is why he does not see just one shade but sees several. This will make him a great president. He is willing to look further than his face.

Posted by: beck | Aug 6, 2008 12:24:57 PM

The empty head is so afraid of George that he has been chicken away from any debate, after being asked a medium softball question in his last debate appearance.

Now he can only hope Ifil could be a rescue.

DITTO...Way to go Nadar! Has anyone noticed how different Obama has been acting since he doesn't have to keep up with Hillary? Geez...this election has fizzled....the conventions are going to be SUCH a bore...YAWN!

Posted by: dar | Aug 6, 2008 12:37:44 PM

Nader's just looking for any publicity he can get. It's not easy to go from being an icon to being ignored but it is really bad taste for him to try to make news by saying that Obama is not his kind of African American candidate. Nader's not far from called Obama a 'house slave'. Just shows how outdated his thinking has become.

Leave it to Nader to tell it like it is.

Posted by: Mack | Aug 6, 2008 12:41:27 PM

Nader lost all credibility when he said there was no difference between Gore and Bush in 2000 and helped to elect Bush! You've lost it Ralph.

Ralph Nader will get my vote as a protest vote. I can't bring myself to vote for the Republicans, but I will never vote for Barack Obama. He's using the same strategy against McCain as he did against Hillary - accusing white people who disagree with him of racism. And then denying he ever did such a thing. Typical ObamaSpeak.

Posted by: Jenny Berryman | Aug 6, 2008 12:48:10 PM

Obama is a joke. All "liberal" minded people should vote Nader in 08, for Obama doesn't represent what they stand for. Nader always has and always will!

Please people, don't listen to Nader this time around. Thats what people did 8 years ago, he said that Gore and Bush were the same. He will say whatever to get attention and has no feel for real politics. Do we let McCain in, just because Obama is not the black President Nader wants, and wait how long for the next decent black leader?

I don't think, if you wanna vote for Obama because of the colour of his skin, the qualities he embodies are that important. What is important is that less than half a century after desegregation we could elect someone of his skin colour. That being said its time for a powerful progressive force in American politics, and that means Barack Obama.

Gallup today: McCain 44%, Obama 46%. Obama continues to fall in the polls while McCain increases.

Posted by: david from texas | Aug 6, 2008 1:08:40 PM

Poll: Nearly half hearing too much about Obama

With Election Day still three months away, 48 percent said they're hearing too much about the Democratic candidate, according to a poll released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. Just 26 percent said the same about his Republican rival, John McCain.

Two-thirds of Republicans and about half of independents said they've heard too much about Obama, as did a third of Democrats, a significant number.

At the same time, nearly four in 10 said they've been hearing too little about McCain — about four times the number who said so about Obama. About half of Republicans, four in 10 independents and even a quarter of Democrats said they've not heard enough about the GOP candidate.

Looks like the MSM plan to try and push Obama down America's throat has backfired. And now, it seems, with all of Obama's flip-flopping, that his campaign is beginning to implode.

Obama laid out a detailed and comprehensive energy plan on Monday. His main goal is to reduce Americans' dependence on foreign oil. What's McCain's plan? Drill Here and Drill Now!!

In the primaries Obama laid out a detailed health care plan which includes mandatory coverage for children. What's McCain's health care plan? Wasn't McCain the one that said social security is a disgrace?

And if Obama's Iraq policy is so wrong why is it that Iraq's Prime Minister supports troop withdrawl? Even the White House conceded to a "time horizon."

Ralph Nader recently received ballot access in California(Aug.2)and polled at 6% in a nationwide survey! The Corporate Media is nearly igonoring Him,

"Obama's recent softening of his opposition to off-shore drilling as part of a broader effort to blur his differences with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz." ... Nadar, you are correct. It's also important to note that Pelosi and other democratic leaders are telling democrats who are up for re-election to just tell voters they are in favor of limited off-shore drilling so that they get re-elected, but they have no intention of actually lifting any ban - they plan to stall any proposed bill until after the election. Pelosi has been quoted as saying that, and Obama himself is no different. He will say he is in favor of limited off-shore drilling to win voters, it might fool some, but once in office, that ban will never be lifted. Another good reason to vote based on voting record rather than on what a politician says when he's running for office.

Markymark said, "What is important is that less than half a century after desegregation we could elect someone of his skin colour." No MarkyMark, that's not what's important in this election. The important thing is to elect THE RIGHT PERSON. John McCain says he'd rather lose an election than win the war. Obama says whatever he thinks people want to hear. The time will come for a minority president, hopefully sooner rather than later. Obama just isn't the right man.

Who gave him the right to tell people how much they pay their employees? Ever hear of a job MARKET?

Budgets for employment will not just magically jump up 45% overnight. This would kill a lot of small businesses and put a lot of low skilled workers out of work.

Government run health care? Well gee, they do everything else so well don't they? Even the father of Canada's system claims it a failure.

Maybe Nader and Obama could go attend some basic High School economics classes together.

I actually supported Obama in the beginning, but can't now. He is moving way to far to the center and is sounding more and more like Bush. I'm not real happy about McCain, other than the fact that he does lay out his plans, is solid in his stance, and will not be swayed by others. McCain is beginning to really appeal to Americans as we see that Obama has basically been an "empty suit with no substance". I think we will continue to see McCain increas in the polls as Obama continues to wrap himself in turmoil, trying to please Pelosi, Reid, and Dean. And, I hate to say it, if he chooses Bayh, he will lose. If Obama chooses Hillary, he may have a chance.

Jennifer,

I appreciate your passion, but unfortunately, you were fooled by 0-bama, and you were mistaken.

0-bama's long-term strategic energy plan for this country to be competitive in world economy can be summarized by (1) producing 1 million electric plug-in cars, (2) 10% of total energy from corns, and (3)you use 15% less energy.

Just on (1), he did not tell you (a) 1 million cars, even without consuming a single drop of liquid (gasoline, or ethanol), do not make a dent to the oil-consumption, just by vehicles. 1 million cars constitute less than 0.77% of all cars running today on the road. Do you really think it will make you oil-independent?

(b) he did not know, or he did not tell you - either way proves he is unfit for being a president - that 80% of electricity is generated by burning coals and natural gas in this country. If you choose his plan to power vehicles, you will produce more green gas than Al Gore had ever dreamed of to warm up the planet. Which do you prefer? Destroy the planet by producing more green gas?

By the way, Gov. Richardson told him 0-bama could use clean carbon coal, so he will produce clean air - I think Gov. Richardson is doing it again, selling him out this time, on coals.

0-bama is clueless in understanding economic, technological, environmental, ... issues are all intertwined, not something can be solved just by his simply empty headed deception to get a few extra votes.

Your only CLEAN solution to UNLIMITED energy source is Nuclear Energy, the place where McCain went yesterday.

He did not make 0-bama type hype, but it is something real, having some substance.

Posted by: fact check | Aug 6, 2008 1:41:26 PM

Rodney, it seems that Obama is agreeing more and more with Bush now, as McCain is continuing to separate himself from Bush. Sometimes, reading Obama's stance on the issues, I think I'm reading about Bush. Obama's camp is hurting now and the GOP is going in for the kill. I knew it would be this way. Obama thought he had it in the bag with the MSM. He thought that beating Hillary in the primaries would automatcally give him the presidency. But now, he is in the big league, and the GOP will stop at nothing. Axelrod is no match for Schmidt....I'm telling you. The GOP will continue their onslaught in attacking Obama. It doesn't look good for Obama. His only choice is to put Hillary on the ticket. Her supporters (PUMA), as CNN and MSNBC (Obama networks) stated, will have a definite negative impact on the Democratic Convention if Hillary is not on the ticket.

Posted by: david from texas | Aug 6, 2008 1:41:45 PM

It's great that we have someone like Ralph Nader to help us see the Democrat and Republican candidates for what they really are which is simply CORPORATE CANDIDATES. I'm putting my support behind Nader so we can at the LEAST get him into the debates so he can shake things up. Which is exactly what this country needs.

DemocratNoMore2 - I agree and think that it's odd that there hasn't been more press about Obama's birth certificate and the difficulty proving he was actually born in Hawaii - there have been a few stories but none in the mainstream media. Oddly, on the flip side, soon after McCain became the Republican nominee, there was quite a bit of press about the fact that he was born on a US military base in the Panama Canal region (to US citizens, his father was serving on a base overseas) - it was actually quite a big story, but nobody ever questioned the circumstances surrounding Obama's birth. Just found that to be interesting.

Posted by: MIssy M | Aug 6, 2008 1:48:58 PM

Angie, because McCain is a Republican, and the last 8 yrs, George Bush has screwed things up, voters automatically identify McCain with Bush. I think McCain has done a great job of distancing himself from Bush. Also, with 100% of the media, the news channels and all the analysts behing Obama, even though he was unknown, he had the support to blow McCain out of the water. Problem is, America has shifted their support to McCain and will continue to do so. The media and the DNC's plan backfired. And now, Nader, is against Obama, which will only to continue to hurt Obama in the future. Here's the link:

Corvair he was testing on the Pettus Bridge the day of the Selma march and beaten by Alabama state troopers. I forgot.

Posted by: Ricky | Aug 6, 2008 1:49:17 PM

angie my dear --it is funny how most everything is about race including nader----since obama is half white why is he not referred to as such.the color thing is injected to attempt to put fear in a certain segment of our population.

DAVID
i would fully agree with you on hillary----but you have to consider what slick willy has done----he is the albatross around her neck so to speak

Posted by: rodney | Aug 6, 2008 1:46:04 PM

Rodney, I do agree with you on slick willy......Hillary does not need him.

Posted by: david from texas | Aug 6, 2008 1:50:44 PM

I actually supported Obama in the beginning, but can't now. He is moving way to far to the center and is sounding more and more like Bush.

Why a surprise and why take you so long? 0-bama, as Nader pointed out, has Vigorously Defended not impeaching Bush and Cheney.

I think you first owe the rest of the 18 million people an apology, and then, we can together defeat 0-bama.

Posted by: fact check | Aug 6, 2008 1:50:47 PM

david when you agree with 95% of the time--doesent that make him---mcbush

Posted by: rodney | Aug 6, 2008 1:52:08 PM

So sorry Ralphie. And, you aren't the proud and out gay man that you should be, either.

Posted by: Michael J | Aug 6, 2008 1:52:16 PM

If it weren't for Nader bush probably never would have been president. Think about that for a minute...

I do apologize to the 18 million suporters. I just found out this morning that Obama refused to vote to impeach Bush / Cheney.

Posted by: david from texas | Aug 6, 2008 1:54:14 PM

I think 'race' should be left out of it...its stupid to base your vote on race.

Posted by: david from texas | Aug 6, 2008 1:56:03 PM

Rodney, I do agree with you on slick willy......Hillary does not need him.

You both are blinded 0-bama supporters; of course you take every opportunity to trash your former president, the only successful 2-term president from the dems party in the past 60 years, who brought this country with unprecedented prosperity and peace during his 8 years in office.

Your phony Affirmative Action candi, as you do now, liked Clinto the same as the GW Bush administration. The final straw that convinced this voter that it is necessary to defeat this phony at all cost.

Posted by: fact check | Aug 6, 2008 1:56:30 PM

jeremy---why does nader put the black man in his statement when obama is half white -----THINK ABOUT THAT---as color should have no bearing.

Posted by: rodney | Aug 6, 2008 1:57:29 PM

Ralph Nader's greatest accomplishment was shooting the Chevy Corvair off the market in the 1960's. John McCain's greatest accomplishment was getting shot down over North Vietnam in the 1960's. Barak Obama's greatest accomplishement hasn't happened yet but will in November.

Oh, and David from Texas. Vote for anyone you like. Texas will vote for a third Bush term regardless.

Posted by: Ricky | Aug 6, 2008 1:58:57 PM

fact chewhat world have you been living in the LAST 8 YEARS--

Posted by: rodney | Aug 6, 2008 1:59:03 PM

Apology accepted. Then, we will defeat 0-bama, even though you still trash WJC.

Well, what the heck, at this point, the energy of my energy is a friend!

Posted by: fact check | Aug 6, 2008 2:00:45 PM

Jeremy,
Fools ignor the facts. I didn't say he shouldn't run, I just pointed out that the last 8 years would have been better for everyone, even the top 1% that bush has helped so much.

Posted by: pt | Aug 6, 2008 2:01:11 PM

Rodney, the reason Ralph Nader is using race is because thus far it is the only thing that has gotten him coverage on ABC, where the race card is King. Still have the racist posts from Steveo and Barry Husseing Obama up, ABC?

Posted by: Ricky | Aug 6, 2008 2:01:20 PM

rodney - Nadar is of no significance today? The man is running for president as an independent - he may not get much press and doesn't have the multi-million dollar advertising budget that Obama has, but he is still significant. There are many voters who aren't buying into either the Democratic or Republican party rhetoric, especially in this election, that makes third party candidates VERY significant.

Posted by: MIssy M | Aug 6, 2008 2:01:38 PM

--Jennifer-- I actually watched MSNBC and CNN. You jumped to the wrong. conclusion like other Obama supporters.
Senator McCain has been saying for months that we need to tap into and produce ALL energy sources. Obama does not. Obama is against nuclear energy, coal and only maybe on off-shore drilling. Over 70% think we should drill off-shore. And the surge in Iraq helped but Obama was against that too.

Posted by: Martin | Aug 6, 2008 2:02:17 PM

I used to blame Nader for Gore losing in 2000, but now I realize that Gore is a loser, so it's not really Nader's fault. Speaking of losers, Obama is just another in a long line of losers the Democrats have offered us.

Posted by: Jane | Aug 6, 2008 2:03:11 PM

angie -

voter registration is registration! Unlike you, voters have brains and they will choose the person who is fit to be a president.

People registered by dems or reps do not mean to necessarily vote for dems or reps.

Unless you are telling me 0-bama has been screening people and only registering those who promised to vote for him. Is that true?

Posted by: fact check | Aug 6, 2008 2:03:38 PM

How soon before Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton attack Ralph Nader so ABC can keep pushing the Race card? As soon as ABC cameras can find them.

Posted by: Ricky | Aug 6, 2008 2:03:38 PM

sorry ricky---but it seems that nader is playing the race card----it is right in front of you.

Posted by: rodney | Aug 6, 2008 2:08:30 PM

mccain has made a lot of gaffes lately.

He talked about the tire pressure and it backfired in his face.
He offered to have his wife compete in a topless beauty contest.
He confused the packers with the Steelers while talking to a Pittsburgh crowd.
He gets upstaged by Paris Hilton after he foolishly used her in an ad that really pis*sed off her mommy.
He talked about people having trouble paying for stuff while wearing $520 shoes.
People are going to start thinking that he is really losing it.

Posted by: pt | Aug 6, 2008 2:09:46 PM

The fact is obama will win the east coast and the west coast but i dont see the south and we all know why!!

Posted by: angie | Aug 6, 2008 2:10:07 PM

According to Larouche, billionaire NYC Mayor Bloomberg is the VP choice for both Dem and GOP parties.

Bloomberg may be installed as VP to put forth agenda of privatizing government programs, infrastructure and jobs for big $$$ on behalf of his bosses, international bankers and financiers.

These bosses' wealth is apparently jeopardized with collapsing economies worldwide today and are desperate to maintain wealth.

It is said that Al Gore is another employee too of these international bankers and financiers and he may be installed as Prez as Obama self destructs in public from this point on to the convention.

Do you think there is any truth to this?

Posted by: francine223 | Aug 6, 2008 2:13:20 PM

rodney - Oh, I agree that he won't win, but when voters leave mainstream parties for other candidates, it can shake up the election quite a bit, especially in a close election and if recent polls are any indication, this election will be close. If Nadar gets even one or two percent of the vote, that could be enough to tip the scales, probably in Obama's favor. That's just one reason why third-party candidates are very important in any election. As for him being an old guy telling you what to do, well, he is old and he is trying to influence your vote, but when you go into that voting booth in November, you're the one with the power and you have the choice to heed his advice, or not.
