Obama Camp on Bill Clinton's Big Speech: What, Me Worry?

Share

August 27, 2008 10:17 AM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: One Clinton down, one to goBarack Obama's campaign insists they're not concerned about former President Bill Clinton's Wednesday address to the Democratic National Convention.

"We're not nervous at all," Obama advisor Anita Dunn said on a conference call Wednesday morning. "We're excited about President Clinton's speech because we think it's going to be a really electric moment in the convention hall when he gets up to speak."

If the Obama camp can properly channel that electricity, as they and the Clinton forces seemed to do on Tuesday, the former president's speech could be a classic convention moment; if not, it could quickly turn into another sign of disunity in the fragile peace between the still-presumptive Democratic nominee and his defeated foe and her supporters.

Dunn says there is no concern on their part that the former president will get a negative greeting by some Obama supporters still healing their wounds from the primary campaign.

"We believe he will be warmly received and enthusiastically revived by the entire convention," Dunn said.

Clinton remains in an elite club -- he's one of only two living Democratic presidents and the only member of the party to win the White House twice since President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton did not give much of a preview of Clinton's speech but said, "(Clinton) knows the challenges and choices that face our chief executive. He'll talk about why Barack Obama is the right person to lead America right now, and why Sen. McCain's promises are more of the same and the wrong choice for America."

The week prior to the convention in Denver, Obama and Clinton had a phone conversation about his speech.

"I said, 'Mr. President, you can say whatever you'd like,'" Obama told reporters, recalling the phone conversation.

Any excitement was for Clinton not Obama.

An Obama sentence noun, verb, and several "Uh"s

Bill Clinton is a smart cookie and knows that the American public will see through this "selling an image". It's not going to work. Yes some will be hypnotized into believing that is what the advertising is suppose to do.

Another image coming folks (advertising and selling is big business) for the American Public to convince them that Obama is great. Mr. Obama is going to give his speech on Thursday in front of a Greek Column sort of exactly the same as the Greek column shown here in the Star Track movie…hmmm. You know Apollo in this fiction episode promised “hope” and “peace”, tranquility and happiness as long as everyone followed him.

As a hardcore Hillary supporter and former PUMA, she did a great job for America and Obama last night. I am now behind him 100%.
What I got from Hillary and to others holding back is lets move on with Obama, the alternative is to be irrelevent or register republican.

"Senator McCain? This is the Oval Office. That's the bathroom. Did you forget?"

Posted by: DAVID NH | Aug 27, 2008 10:31:00 AM

According to Jamie Allman on 97.1 radio in St. Louis, who is in Denver and covering the convention, what the cameras did not reveal at the convention was the number of Hillary supporters who walked out when Michelle Obama was speaking on Monday night. The MSM reporters keep interviewing these people who all chant unity, but Allman has interviewed Clinton delegates off the record who say the party is NOT united, and they will not vote for Obama in November. The MSM is trying to make the news, not report the news. They want Obama to win, and they are tailoring their coverage to make it appear that his success is inevitable. This is the underlying message the MSM is trying to send to Americans: BARACK OBAMA WILL WIN THIS ELECTION. IF YOU DON’T SUPPORT HIM, DON’T GO TO THE POLLS BECAUSE YOU’RE WASTING YOUR TIME. HIS VICTORY IS INEVITABLE. The media in this country is pathetic. The people at MSNBC are Obama-hores. No wonder they're losing viewers.

Dear American Citizens and the mass media of U.S.A.

As a concerned disabled American Veteran and American citizen, I consider it my duty and responsibility to bring following critical characteristics of so called Maverick McCain to you for proving me wrong or right.

"The citizens of the United States of America have the ultimate responsibility to elect the " Right Candidate with the right temperament" to lead our nation' to address our nations present and future moral, democratic, economic, educational, health care, energy, military, and foundational soul of our nation.

In my firm professional opinion that the media should help the common voter to explore and discuss following attributes of Hon. Senator McCain.

1. Does he have a calm, cool, and collected " temper " [ Presidential Temperament ]?
2. Does he have a sound and sustained "Judgment and Caliber"?
3. Does he have a reveal a presidential "Thought-fullness and togetherness" of purpose and positions?
4. Does he lot or little "ex-poser and exploitation" around Washington"?
5. Does he poses enough " Vigor, wisdom and Vision " for our Great-grand Nation?
6. Does he poses foreign policy exploit-es based on " American Values, Virtuous, Vastness"?
7. Does his campaign talk. slogans and ads are based of facts and free of fiction, deception, seduction, and attacks?

If your answer to the above questions is yes then recommend and vote for him.

But in my professional. political, and personal opinion that vote is against the common interests majority of American people, against the world humanity, continuation of status qua and possibly dangerous world order.

Long live U.S.A and its democratic people and their common sense.

COL.. A.M. Khajawall [Ret] MD., Colonel, USAR / MC Combat Stress Control[Ret], Disabled American Veteran and Iraq Freedom team.

PS: Please google McCain and temper read what his senator colleagues and others are saying about it.

Hillary didn't change any minds. There are people who are still resentful of the way things turned out. She might have thrown her support to him, but that doesn't compel anyone to change their vote. One thing you can be certain of - Bill Clinton is still smarting from the race card thrown at him. He has never been known to "forgive and forget." BHO has everything to worry about. It is telling that Clinton will not be present when BHO is crowned amidst the Greek Temple (cheesy) setting. When you look up the word egotist, you'll find BHO's face. Enough said.

Posted by: Frustrated Voter | Aug 27, 2008 10:46:39 AM

I loved hillary's speech last night. She is a gifted speaker. I am not an Obama fan, but I will probably end up voting for him. The ads the republicans are using are making me sick. I am not sure what bill will do but that shouldnt reflect on Hillary. she is her own person. I like Bill and if he dosent want to support Obama that is is right, but Hillary does support Obama and she was the person I was voting for so I will likely take her advice no matter how the repbulicans try to spin it saying she really doesnt want him to win or how fellow upset hillary voters also try to spin it. She is in it for him to win it. The ads over the next week will come fast and hard from republicans because McCain only has about a week left to use money he raised to campaign, then he has to spread out 85 million until nov. 4th.

One more thing - when this Ayers thing really hits the fan, everyone run for your lives because BO will do what it takes...

Posted by: Frustrated Voter | Aug 27, 2008 10:48:02 AM

COL Khajawall - I'm beginning to think the Republicans were right about McCain eight years ago, when they tried to tell us this guy wasn't stable.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 27, 2008 10:52:23 AM

After Bill's "candidate x" and "candiate y" remarks yesterday, I would think the Obama camp would be a bit more worried.

Posted by: susie | Aug 27, 2008 10:54:05 AM

rachel - that may have been the best I've seen Clinton speak. It was well written and well delivered.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 27, 2008 10:54:24 AM

You go Andrea.

Hillary's speech was fantastic. I am still voting for McCain. It is truly sad that she was not the nominee. Michelle Obama looked like a deer in headlights.

Posted by: Samantha | Aug 27, 2008 10:57:18 AM

susie - you can't worry about what you can't change. Well, you can, but there's no point to it.

Bill Clinton will say what he's going to say, and Democrats across the country will do with those words what they will.

In the end, Kerry got 88 or 89 percent of the Democrats' votes. I'm guessing Obama will be below that but somewhere above the 80 percent that's showing up for him in polls now. So figure an 82-86 range; that might be as good a guess as any.

And that translates to 1-3 percent increase among voters in general. I do think the 4 percent figure thrown out by pundits yesterday is a little high and can't be mathematically supported.

Once again, this will come down to independents and GOTV operations.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 27, 2008 10:59:33 AM

Obama should remember he is asking to be president of the US not Mount Olympus. He should make himself one of the people not one of the Gods!

Posted by: karen | Aug 27, 2008 10:59:54 AM

You'd think people would drop the "McCain is old" story line. Biden is only 6 years younger.

In fact, I wish everyone would drop the whole "7 houses" line. It's been overdone now. And McCain needs to drop the "I'm a POW" response to everything. We know it! So drop it.

In the 3 most recent polls:
Rasmussen McCain +1
Gallup McCain +2
CNN Tie

Obama has tanked in the polls due to a flurry of events that show he is not ready to lead, including the Georgia conflict and the turnaround of the situation in Iraq.

The only thing keeping Obama in this is the poor economy. McCain will need to convince voters he is better prepared to handle things.

My prediction is the stock markets start to recover in Sept/Nov and economic concerns start to ease a little.

Posted by: JA | Aug 27, 2008 11:04:51 AM

I’m sure most people don’t remember this, but at the very beginning of the campaign, a Democratic strategist (can’t remember the guy’s name) on CNN posed the question, “Do the Clintons really want to stand in the way of the first African-American president?” I think that sums up the hatred for Hillary Clinton. Much of the Democratic party is made up of white-guilt liberals, and they can’t abide the idea that anyone would interfere with a black man becoming president. If Obama wasn’t in the running, those same liberals would be singing Hillary’s praises. Hillary had the misfortune to run at a time when the white-guilt liberals decided it was time to elect a black man to the Oval Office. The amazing thing is that these liberals touted Obama’s lack of experience as if it was some kind of virtue, and condemned Hillary’s experience as being “the old politics.” Now their “new kind of politican” is practicing the “old politics.” Furthermore, his handlers have forced him to select a VP candidate with the experience they once claimed was not important. Such is life in ObamaWorld. I feel like I’ve fallen asleep and awakened in some kind of surreal world where the lunatics are in charge of the asylum . .. .

Posted by: Andrea | Aug 27, 2008 11:06:58 AM

And there we go.........claims of racism by Andrea. It was only a matter of time.

It's really very simple: Why did Dems not put forward their STRONGER candidate? Because she was a female.

Posted by: Rose Szymanski | Aug 27, 2008 11:16:50 AM

Very true Andrea. I am an African American that did not and is not supporting Obama. It was unfortunate for Hillary. I say that only because she was defeated by someone that was clearly not as qualified or deserving. Had he been -then I would say fair enough. Obama is falling in the polls because he is full of hype. I thought Michelle's speech was awful and corny.I don't care if she met Obama on the dating game. I care about the issues and what can he do for the country. If she had said "I am from the South side of Chicago" one more time I would puke. The Obamas have survived on hype and not substance and that is running out.

He made a stupid choice not choosing her that was clear last night. Charles Barkley, as if anyone gives a damn was spouting his mouth about how this is "the first Af-Amer president and how he did not feel he would see it in his life time"...Blah Blah Blah. That is not a reason to vote for someone. Funny as I black person I did not think that I would never see a black president but then again I never really cared about the race of the person as long as they could lead and I don't see that in Obama.

Minister Obama surely prays that the bitter followers of the vanquished Jr. NY Senator embrace the New peoples Movement. For those unsure, Regional Reducation Fellowship Centers will be established. Those who can not understand the vision will be contacted through their furnished contact points. Minister Obama has accepted the records of all who followed the fallen One. Mike -

Bill Clinton is not a "cookie". He is the former President under whose terms the country has experienced a period of unprecedented prosperity and peace.

Zero-bama is a cook, cooking up things that he has not clue about, including his energy policy of using the electricity, 70% of which is generated by burning coals and natural gas - the cause of global warming and pollution - to power a pathetic 1 million plug-ins in the next 10 years. If you rely on this phony energy "policy" by a phony Nothingness, you will be watching $10/g gasoline and a second economy after China.

Hillary's speech last night absolutly ROCKED! (But, of course, I already knew she was incredible because I have seen her speak in person on several occasions.) The Dems have made a SERIOUS mistake in giving the nomination to Obama and Obama has made a serious mistake in giving the VP to Biden....mark my words....we are in for a serious October surprise.

Never Obama. I concur with you 100%. Obama actually could do more damage to our legacy if he gets in a does a horrible job. This man has not done anything for Illinois. He falls off the map during the 90's. And I also agree that I did not envision the first black nominee as the self proclaimed chosen one. I was looking for more of a Thurgood Marshall, Bayard Rustin or Walter White. Not phony Obama.

Posted by: Samantha | Aug 27, 2008 11:42:45 AM

Samantha,

You are a moron. "Fell of the map in the 90's"??? And really, no one gives a s h i t about who you "envisioned" as the first black nominee. Since you are so keen on "envisioning", why don't you take a second and "envision" a McCain presidency....evisceration of the constitution, supreme court, military. Yeah, "envision" that, loser.

The so-called, die-hard, on-going Hillary supporters need a therapist as this point. Not a place to Blog, a microphone or an interview spot on TV. They support a person who does not support them or their actions and have so little control of their emotions they will sacrifice the lives of our men and women in uniform, jobs, energy independence, women's issues and the heart and soul of the middle class because they are disgruntled. That, my friends, is delusion at its best.

The smart thing for Obama would have been to let Hillary have the nomination be the VP. Get seasoned for 8 years, learn the ropes. Then run for president. But his huge ego wanted the bowl of wax too soon and after this loss he will not be back. Michelle could not even play poker face last night when Hillary was speaking. Her dislike for Hillary was so obvious in her facial expressions.

Bill will not intentionally undermine Obama. He will do his best to support Obama tonight. Unfortunately Obama's minions and the Fox news network will take everything out of context and create controversy where there is none.

Obama's minions will do it because they are paronoid and can feel the precipice of doom before them. Obama is going to lose big and they are already doing the blame game.

Fox news will do it because they know how easy it is to rile up Obama's minions with lies and half truths.

It's so sad that the election has come to this again. Why do us democrats always pick the worst possible loser to run for president?

typical response of someone who is defeated: answer the introductory part of the question, but fail to respond to crux.

You can't justify your vote for McCain by any other way than skewering Obama. Talk about no core. Ever think of just sitting this one out? Or writing in Hillary? HOO-AHH...Yes, one candidate wins and one candidate loses; however ALL CANDIDATES SHOULD HAVE THEIR VOTES COUNTED; as of yet, HRC delegates have not been released for Obama so why not let the voters choice be heard. Yes, more than likely HRC is the losing candidate, but her effort for the democratic party should not be minimized, let her voters speak. I mean this is a de-moc-ra-cy is it not? Anyone who may disagree with this needs to explain why the HRC delegates should not be allowed to cast their votes because it seems to go against everything democratic....

Posted by: CuriousIndep | Aug 27, 2008 1:17:20 PM

HA! A "civil rights leader" with multiple homes!!! Classic. A real woman of the people, eh? I guess you and McCain have more in common than I thought.

Obama has done plenty for me. The simple fact the he understands international relations is a start. His candidacy has renewed my spirit for public service and community outreach. But that doesn't count, right? But I suppose McCain has reinvigorated your faith in tax havens for the extremely wealthy and love of dunce-cap foreign policy. Fair enough.

I'll let you get back to writing your book report for English 101. I'm sure you will do a bang-up job.

JBR. Yes black people can actually be prosperous, and serve our communities. Three of those homes were built by my family when they were slaves and we bought them back.

By the way, I don't assign my student book reports in undergraduate English classes. That is grade school. If you had an education you would know that. My Phd is from Harvard and so is my law degree. You renewed commitment to public service more tha likely goes no further than the tube socks you sell on the street corner. i never lost my spirit for public service and really did not need Obama to renew anything for me. You prove that his supporters are really weak people looking for kool aid and a psuedo leader.

"Obama has done plenty for me. The simple fact the he understands international relations is a start."

Yet you have yet to say what he has done for Chicago beyond speaking at a few Chicago 2016 Olympic events.

He is not going to win and you will be disillusioned and back to sucking on Garrets popcorn.

Posted by: Samantha | Aug 27, 2008 2:03:51 PM

You have an awfully crude way about you for being a "civil rights leader." Yes, US black people can be prosperous...more power. But you flaunting your education and wealth is not indicative of someone who cares about anything but self-aggrandizement. When you are rallying the troops, do you use this line of argument or throw around your "accomplishments"? I would guess not.

You asked what Obama has done for me, and I told you. Your response? Juvenile, at best.

You seem to be breeding the very same ignorance and intolerance that as a "civil rights leader" you would ostensible by trying to tear down.

You're a fraud.

Curious: "I mean this is a de-moc-ra-cy is it not?"

Actually it isn't. As I'm sure you know, when not brain-numbed via the collective IQ draining caused by these message boards (which effects all of us), we're a democratic republic. But we're not a democracy.

Hillary is for Obama and so is Bill Clinton. No more MCcain. Obama is our choice for PRESIDENT.

I can't wait to hear Joe speak. Bill scares me, but I am sure he will take his stand and make it firm. I trust and believe in Bill to do right by his party.

I also must say Hillary did a great job last night. Our party is very important to both of them, they will do right by it.

Michelle rocked it out on Monday. My 26 year old said she could run for president some day.

Will everyone stop referencing the poll numbers please? Listen to this, I am voting for Obama, and so is everyone I talk to who is voting. And guess what, none of these polls have ever asked us anything. I'm sure there are millions of 26 year olds around the country who also have not been asked by these polls. The fact that McCain is up by 2 is irrelevant.

Hillary convinced me.... I'm voting OBABA, because the other wrinkly guy scares me. I want to have control of my body and not have some old guy tell me what I can or cannot do.

Posted by: Rene | Aug 27, 2008 2:59:46 PM

I can't say what McCain is for.......I know that he says that he is ready to lead. What has he lead except the bill that doesn't give equal pay to women ?

Posted by: Nancy | Aug 27, 2008 3:02:25 PM

John McCain was a POW ? I did not know that.

Posted by: Ron | Aug 27, 2008 3:04:37 PM

McCain is not old, he is senile.... there is a difference. He's not allowed to talk to the media any more because as they put it " John McCain does not speak for the McCain Campaign.

What planet are you nutso people on. Anyone who claims they were for Hillary & say they are now voting for McCain is a liar. Period! Either you are a republican troll or you only never cared about what Hillary stands for. Obama is going to win this election with or with out you. Give the facts that show Hillary is more qualified to be president than Barack. Give the facts that show he has no experience. Let's be intellectually honest & not throw out a bunch of crap talking points.

Right now, Obama and his camp is still trying to screw Hillary out of a roll call vote. If he does, it will be another case of poor judgement by The Messiah. Yup, just another boneheaded move by Obama.

Go ahead, Obama - make PUMA's day!

PUMA!

It would be absolutely wonderful if Bill Clinton walked up to the podium tonight and said this. "This man is not qualified to be President and I can not nor will not endorse him." Then just walk off the stage. Obama deserves this and the voters deserves the truth.
NO WAY, NO HOW, NO OBAMA, NOW OR EVER.

Senator Clinton represents my values, my hopes and my dreams for my family and my country. Senator Obama just wants the POWER.

Mary,

Are you deaf, dumb or blind? Maybe all three?

Posted by: JBR | Aug 27, 2008 3:49:27 PM

I might vote 0-bama for an Idol, if he yields a feelin-good speech, from the Temple of Doom.

Knockout Ed,

OK, I think you are half right. HRC has made her case, and we respect her choice and her appeal to her voters. From now (the convention) on, we shall not mention we voted HRC in the primaries. We simply are dems who will vote for a Rep candidate, unfortunately, for the first time.

I wish Bill could say, "Hillary and Biden do not believe this guy is qualified to be President, and I agree completely"!
Believe them!

@JBR--- Are you also deaf, dumb and blind or all three? You are a supporter of a candidate who is the most corrupt in the last 100 years.
The American people deserve to know the truth.

Posted by: Mary | Aug 27, 2008 4:32:51 PM

Okay stop even I am tired of the mess. I am a big fan of Hillary and not so much barack, but if you are saying you don't beleive her after yesterday, you are calling her a liar. I don't beleive she is and I beleive she did what she felt is best and I may end up voting for barack.

"We simply are dems who will vote for a Rep candidate, unfortunately, for the first time"
---fact check

ok fact check but why? that is my question. i have not heard one Hillary supporter who says they are not voting for Obama give me a valid reason why. Lots of he's not ready or he wants power but where are the details that what i'm asking for. how can you say you won't vote for the person that most closely aligns with your beliefs?

“McCain is like a Grumpy Elephant with no vision and a flip flopping memory! There is a reason this Elephant is always attacking without a postive message. His trainers are Rove & Schmidt at the circus! We know what to expect at the McCain’s convention a Grumpy Elephant entwining his trunk with 2 Rogue elephants in Bush/Cheney with two cheering trainers in Rove & Schmidt who are trying to sell the American People a 3 rd George Bush Term.” RFK

Mary,

Most corrupt in 100 years?!!! That is a pretty impressive distinction. Maybe you could enumerate the instances of corruption. And if it is not too much of a bother, maybe you can source each instance with (credible) citation, such as indictments, grand jury testimony, corroborated accounts of malfeasance, etc. Thanks.

This political cat fight is totally embarassing. You people should focus on the issues. Is going to war under false pretenses imporant? do you want real healthcare? Are you tired of being lied to, tired of being told to go shopping ever time there's a crisis? then vote for Obama.
