Obama Camp on Bill Clinton's Big Speech: What, Me Worry?

Share

August 27, 2008 10:17 AM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: One Clinton down, one to goBarack Obama's campaign insists they're not concerned about former President Bill Clinton's Wednesday address to the Democratic National Convention.

"We're not nervous at all," Obama advisor Anita Dunn said on a conference call Wednesday morning. "We're excited about President Clinton's speech because we think it's going to be a really electric moment in the convention hall when he gets up to speak."

If the Obama camp can properly channel that electricity, as they and the Clinton forces seemed to do on Tuesday, the former president's speech could be a classic convention moment; if not, it could quickly turn into another sign of disunity in the fragile peace between the still-presumptive Democratic nominee and his defeated foe and her supporters.

Dunn says there is no concern on their part that the former president will get a negative greeting by some Obama supporters still healing their wounds from the primary campaign.

"We believe he will be warmly received and enthusiastically revived by the entire convention," Dunn said.

Clinton remains in an elite club -- he's one of only two living Democratic presidents and the only member of the party to win the White House twice since President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton did not give much of a preview of Clinton's speech but said, "(Clinton) knows the challenges and choices that face our chief executive. He'll talk about why Barack Obama is the right person to lead America right now, and why Sen. McCain's promises are more of the same and the wrong choice for America."

The week prior to the convention in Denver, Obama and Clinton had a phone conversation about his speech.

"I said, 'Mr. President, you can say whatever you'd like,'" Obama told reporters, recalling the phone conversation.

over at MCNBC Olbermann is having a meltdown (if that's possible)over Obama's poll collapse.

In the 3 most recent polls:
Rasmussen McCain +1
Gallup McCain +2
CNN Tie

Obama has tanked in the polls due to a flurry of events that show he is not ready to lead, including the Georgia conflict and the turnaround of the situation in Iraq.

The only thing keeping Obama in this is the poor economy. McCain will need to convince voters he is better prepared to handle things.

My prediction is the stock markets start to recover in Sept/Nov and economic concerns start to ease a little.

I’m sure most people don’t remember this, but at the very beginning of the campaign, a Democratic strategist (can’t remember the guy’s name) on CNN posed the question, “Do the Clintons really want to stand in the way of the first African-American president?” I think that sums up the hatred for Hillary Clinton. Much of the Democratic party is made up of white-guilt liberals, and they can’t abide the idea that anyone would interfere with a black man becoming president. If Obama wasn’t in the running, those same liberals would be singing Hillary’s praises. Hillary had the misfortune to run at a time when the white-guilt liberals decided it was time to elect a black man to the Oval Office. The amazing thing is that these liberals touted Obama’s lack of experience as if it was some kind of virtue, and condemned Hillary’s experience as being “the old politics.” Now their “new kind of politican” is practicing the “old politics.” Furthermore, his handlers have forced him to select a VP candidate with the experience they once claimed was not important. Such is life in ObamaWorld. I feel like I’ve fallen asleep and awakened in some kind of surreal world where the lunatics are in charge of the asylum . .. .

And there we go.........claims of racism by Andrea. It was only a matter of time.

It's really very simple: Why did Dems not put forward their STRONGER candidate? Because she was a female.

sorry andrea, not directed at you

After last night I know the wrong person is the candidate, again she spoke from the heart and not to many people can do that. She would make the best president the WORLD has ever seen!!!!

Very true Andrea. I am an African American that did not and is not supporting Obama. It was unfortunate for Hillary. I say that only because she was defeated by someone that was clearly not as qualified or deserving. Had he been -then I would say fair enough. Obama is falling in the polls because he is full of hype. I thought Michelle's speech was awful and corny.I don't care if she met Obama on the dating game. I care about the issues and what can he do for the country. If she had said "I am from the South side of Chicago" one more time I would puke. The Obamas have survived on hype and not substance and that is running out.

He made a stupid choice not choosing her that was clear last night. Charles Barkley, as if anyone gives a damn was spouting his mouth about how this is "the first Af-Amer president and how he did not feel he would see it in his life time"...Blah Blah Blah. That is not a reason to vote for someone. Funny as I black person I did not think that I would never see a black president but then again I never really cared about the race of the person as long as they could lead and I don't see that in Obama.

JA; She LOST! Get it? She LOST! That's the way it works. One candidate wins, one candidate loses.

Minister Obama will share his wisdom from the Peoples Temple on Thursday. The Learned Adviser Ayers channeled the Energy of the Afro-Socratic Keepers of Wisdom into the design of this the Greatest of Temples!
Minister Obama surely prays that the bitter followers of the vanquished Jr. NY Senator embrace the New peoples Movement. For those unsure, Regional Reducation Fellowship Centers will be established. Those who can not understand the vision will be contacted through their furnished contact points. Minister Obama has accepted the records of all who followed the fallen One. Every effort will be made to reach out no matter the hour to each and every former follower.

As much as I liked Hillary previously, she can thank Bill for losing her the nomination.

Samantha,
"Funny as I black person I did not think that I would ever see a black president..."

Don't worry Sam, you won't. :>) He's not going to win. Pride goeth before the fall. As a fellow African American, I'm embarassed that when we got the opportunity to field the first serious Black presidential candidate, it would be a pretentious, egocentric, uppity, inexperienced liar like the messiah. Lord help us!

Mike -

Bill Clinton is not a "cookie". He is the former President under whose terms the country has experienced a period of unprecedented prosperity and peace.

Zero-bama is a cook, cooking up things that he has not clue about, including his energy policy of using the electricity, 70% of which is generated by burning coals and natural gas - the cause of global warming and pollution - to power a pathetic 1 million plug-ins in the next 10 years. If you rely on this phony energy "policy" by a phony Nothingness, you will be watching $10/g gasoline and a second economy after China.

Why should I vote for McCain?

His party has proved they are incapable of governing. Iraq, Katrina, Abu Graid, Unregulated Mortgage crisis, etc...

Pretty much anyone would be better.

No brainer. The Adults need to take over for the chickenhawk criminals.

Hillary's speech last night absolutly ROCKED! (But, of course, I already knew she was incredible because I have seen her speak in person on several occasions.) The Dems have made a SERIOUS mistake in giving the nomination to Obama and Obama has made a serious mistake in giving the VP to Biden....mark my words....we are in for a serious October surprise.

Never Obama. I concur with you 100%. Obama actually could do more damage to our legacy if he gets in a does a horrible job. This man has not done anything for Illinois. He falls off the map during the 90's. And I also agree that I did not envision the first black nominee as the self proclaimed chosen one. I was looking for more of a Thurgood Marshall, Bayard Rustin or Walter White. Not phony Obama.

Posted by: Samantha | Aug 27, 2008 11:42:45 AM

Samantha,

You are a moron. "Fell of the map in the 90's"??? And really, no one gives a s h i t about who you "envisioned" as the first black nominee. Since you are so keen on "envisioning", why don't you take a second and "envision" a McCain presidency....evisceration of the constitution, supreme court, military. Yeah, "envision" that, loser.

I am a Republican, and I can tell you if McCain picks Romney, I will vote Barr. Romney is a non-starter among many of us, plus it will show that McCain will put winning above his principles. I hope he doesn't do it, but if he does, he better be ready for a major backlash.

Posted by: jacee | Aug 27, 2008 12:08:04 PM

What's wrong JBR. Angry that all of the kool aid in the world is not getting your guy elected?
You and I are free to envison what we want. After all isn't Obama the king of Vision. Yes. He fell off the map in the 90's. Are you familiar at all with Chicago? Alice Palmer? Didn't think so.

You sound really angry my friend. I laugh at Obamabots, they are so fake and the nasty racist ever.

And by the way MORON. I am closely related to a "real" civil rights leader. Obama is not fit to shine his shoes.

Rightfully , you should not give a crap about what I envison because my vote is for Mccain.

According to the polls:

Gallup Daily: No Bounce for Obama in Post-Biden Tracking
McCain creeps ahead, 46% to 44%

Bye Bye Obama

The so-called, die-hard, on-going Hillary supporters need a therapist as this point. Not a place to Blog, a microphone or an interview spot on TV. They support a person who does not support them or their actions and have so little control of their emotions they will sacrifice the lives of our men and women in uniform, jobs, energy independence, women's issues and the heart and soul of the middle class because they are disgruntled. That, my friends, is delusion at its best.
