Obama 'Deeply Concerned' About Hurricane Gustav

Share

August 30, 2008 11:29 AM

ABC News' Matt Jaffe and Sunlen Miller report:

At a breakfast with their wives Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden expressed their concern that Hurricane Gustav had been upgraded to a category 3 storm.

"We are deeply concerned," Obama told ABC News' Ann Compton at the Yankee Kitchen family restaurant in Boardman, Ohio. "I've instructed my senate staff to monitor the situation closely.  Make sure we've contacted both FEMA but also private relief organizations just to make sure that whatever happens people are prepared."

Obama said that they would continue to monitor the storm and would keep Louisiana residents in their minds. "Obviously we're going to be each day seeing what happens and we're praying for New Orleans but we want to make sure that people are making all the necessary precautions." Obama added that he hoped people had learned from Hurricane Katrina that evacuation is key.

"This time they're not taking any chances so say a prayer," Biden said adding that his wife Jill "went down there for a week after when the hurricane hit last time."

Asked about his new role as Veep nominee, Biden responded, "Oh I hope I'm adjusting well."

Obama 'Deeply Concerned' About Hurricane Gustav......

"I apologize by the way, I mean to say 'Hurricane Palin". That sort of slipped out. Sorry kids."

Posted by: Angel | Aug 30, 2008 11:41:24 AM

Is that all Biden knows how to do is "say a prayer" not pray a prayer. Obviously he just doesn't get it. His language is deplorable and he needs to clean it up. Cussing on the campaign trail is not what we want our kids to hear.

Posted by: Jill | Aug 30, 2008 11:44:12 AM

I think ABC news needs to interview Jimmy Carter and see what his perspective is regarding Gustav. Deep stuff here...

Posted by: Carl | Aug 30, 2008 11:46:24 AM

There are other storms that Obama should more concerned about like the Russo-Georgian conflict, TINY Iran who is ready to wipe Israel off the map, loose/lose lips Biden ...

Gustav should be lower down the list.

Posted by: McCain/Palin 2008 | Aug 30, 2008 11:56:19 AM

... and that his newest ad "No Change" with Palin packs NO PUNCH ... not like Gustav.

Posted by: McCain/Palin 2008 | Aug 30, 2008 12:02:20 PM

... because he knows that Palin is a REFORMER ... she has DELIVERED CHANGE ... and has more EXECUTIVE experience than himself and his veep

McCain - Attention Whore '08

Posted by: Mr. Coffee | Aug 30, 2008 12:05:33 PM

Was Obama crying after he said? Did Michelle hug and kissed him? What was his body language? Was he wearing red or blue shirt? Was he wearing shorts or cut jeans? Did Joe Biden looked depressed? Were they eating ice cream or were they were eating breakfast(oops silly me they were having breakfast) Was he eating bagel or sausage of sandwich? Did he exercise? He need to be fit for president. Already, Obama is concerned that McCain making wrong choice by taking inexperience VP. Silly McCain. Need More Scoop

Posted by: Tim | Aug 30, 2008 12:05:42 PM

Obama id deeply concerned bla bla bla - channels cnn msnbc - 2 - 4 - IS THERE NOTHING HE SAYS WORTH NOT PRINTING? Not to these clowns - he makes a three point shot in basket ball and you would think he solved the world hunger crisis. The real fact is he has never done anything.

He didn't have room for a woman on his ticket? But not just any woman - a woman who got 18 million votes. Who does he think he is. Hilary earned that spot and everyone in the free world knows it except this bum.

So Obama is concerned meaning what that McCain isn't? Or he is just special.

Posted by: a citizen | Aug 30, 2008 12:05:43 PM

another headline in favor of Obama by abcnews.com.

It'd be interesting to do a summary of the abcnews.com headlines made about McCain and Obama to see the bias.

Posted by: Dan | Aug 30, 2008 12:06:14 PM

Three TV stations said some polls show a drop for Obama this AM. I have come across 14 polls but not all have up to date information. Seems some are waiting until after the Republican Convention to conduct comphrehensive polls.

Do it Obama...Biden. Bow down on your knees and pray.

Posted by: dave | Aug 30, 2008 12:13:23 PM

Hey maybe Obama just needs to fly to New Orleans...open his arms....and part the waters!

Posted by: Darla | Aug 30, 2008 12:16:48 PM

When he said he was "deeply concerned" was he reading off a teleprompter? Obama already using upcoming Hurricane as a political op. Liberals are such phonies.

Stop lyin.

In other news, McLooseCannon's new running mate is mired in an ethics probe, a whose-baby-is-it scandal and hasn't a clue about the world outside of Anchorage.

DOES AMERICA REALLY NEED A LOOSE CANNON IN THE OVAL OFFICE?

obamas real experience, 20 years in a black power church. It's not surprising that the bottom of the Republican ticket (Sarah Palin) has more credentials than the top of the democratic ticket. What is surprising is that there are still folk supporting this fraud Obama.

Posted by: badger1 | Aug 30, 2008 12:22:42 PM

Sarah Palin is no Hiliary. McBush thinks women are stupid. It is a insult to Hiliary that they are comparing Palin to Hiliary. Also, McBush is 72 years old and had cancer 5 times. and he trusted the lives of 300 american in the hands of some1 who has 1 and half yrs of public service. Are you serious

Posted by: anthony | Aug 30, 2008 12:26:26 PM

Hey Anna, after nomination you are still reintroducing Obama. Insecured feelings. Very Sorry state for Obama and most important is he is reintroducing himself by saying Palin cannot bring change. Is he running against Palin? This is getting interesting day by day, conversation by conversation by conversation, ad by ad, blog by blog.

Posted by: Tim | Aug 30, 2008 12:27:20 PM

You know, I know, we all know what he meant to say. That evil George Bush will let all those black people drown, on purpose, like he did with Katrina.

The difference today is there is a responsible Republican Governor, Jindal, who am in charge. His head is NOT up his backside. He won't be waiting for the federal government to come in after he asks for help. He already has commandeered those buses, the ones that Raid Nagin let flood over, and have them ready to go.

When democrats are in charge - LOOK OUT!

Posted by: LarryMan | Aug 30, 2008 12:27:57 PM

Saying a prayer is very nice, but why doesn't 'Clark Kent' Obama fly out to the Gulf and blow out Gustav with his super-breath?

Come on Barack - after the rockstar performance in Denver - this would be a very nice capstone. Get your game on...

Posted by: Juan Cockstostan | Aug 30, 2008 12:27:58 PM

anthony - Youre right,, Sarah Palin is better than Hillary Clinton. She has the more impressive resume, and has executive experience. PS. In case you are lacking common sense. If McCain were choosing a VP strictly for Hillary voters why would he choose a woman whois STRICTLY pro-life? Nice try.

Posted by: badger1 | Aug 30, 2008 12:30:10 PM

So, Anthony, if Hillary was so much more than Palin, why didn't BO choose her? This democrat who touts equal pay for equal work didn't see Hillary as his equal? hmmmm ;)

Posted by: Kitty | Aug 30, 2008 12:30:10 PM

Katrina is a reminder of the faillure of the Republican Government and this time again nobody knows what McPalin is doing in collaboartion with WBush and the diplomate Cheney. God save America from Gustav and McPalin.

Obama as usual contradicted his mantra of change when he flinched and chose a washed up Washington insider as his VP. McCain the Maverick as usual makes a bold, and vibrant decision in choosing a woman, Sarah Palin the bold, vibrant, and popular Governor from Alaska.

It's a storm Obama and preparations are well underway. As long as you're pandering you should widen your concern because the fan of uncertainty extends well beyond Louisiana. And don't worry, I'm sure the debit cards and free housing is all arranged.

Posted by: rplat | Aug 30, 2008 12:46:29 PM

Just a reminder, Americans...

John McCain Voted *TWICE* against a commission to study the failures of the response to Katrina!

He opposed financial relief funds!

He voted against five months of Medicaid for Hurricane Katrina victims!

He voted against an emergency funding bill which included $28 Billion for hurricane relief.

...and up until Katrina, he has repeatedly voted to underfund levee and flood control projects, not only for New Orleans, but nationwide!

Posted by: badger1 | Aug 30, 2008 12:59:14 PM

McCain really doesn't get it. Does he really think that we're dumb enough to vote for Palin, just because she's a woman? That just goes to show you what his thoughts are regarding women.

Palin DOES NOT equal Hillary, and she will not come close!

Posted by: shaarona | Aug 30, 2008 12:59:34 PM

AND: say a prayer that sweetie hussein and plagiarist-joe are defeated solidly.

Who do you want as VP:

Joe Biden. Sweetie hussein running mate and plagiarizing expert, who has stolen more words than Milton Berle. Totally lacking in morals or ethics, in his third-rate, mediocre law school Biden was only able to graduate 76th in a class of 85 - i.e., he was in the lowest 10.5%! Of course, while campaigning, he claimed falsely to have graduated in the "top half" of his class. A plagiarizer and a LIAR! As a politics-as-usual, 30+-year congressional parasite and reprobate, Plagiarist-Joe never worked harder than in his efforts to kill bi-partisan legislation simply because it would have adversely affected the enormous income of his lobbyist son.

Sarah Palin. A true political reformer who has cleaned-up one of the most politically corrupt states in the nation and who has shown a solid and unwavering commitment to ethical government?

Tough choice? NOT!

Posted by: ALEX H. | Aug 30, 2008 1:00:06 PM

Shaarona - No-its you who doesnt get it. If Mcain were trying to appeal to Hillary voters he'd have chosen a woman who was pro-choice. Make sense??? Pretty simple deduction. Sorry about your lack of reason.

The contents of all the videos shown here are just one of many reasons why my American family refuses to vote for Obama. Thuggery and cheating should be condemned and not rewarded as has been done by the DNC. How dare anyone deny American citizens the right to vote.

Check out hillbuzz on wordpress and topic of we will not be silenced for testimonials and witnesses to the Primary Caucus thuggery.

When McCain choose Palin, Obama did not anticipated this move from McCain. His judgement was flawed. Obama is now doing the same he did after Iraq war just raising his voice and talking against the McCain pick than people's core problem Economy. He is so intrested to become president that he forgot to voter's issue. Is this the wise judgement?

Posted by: Tim | Aug 30, 2008 1:07:57 PM

What a game they play. Isn't this the same party that wants "In God we trust." off our currency and the teaching of moral values out of the class room? Yes it's a game. "Let the games begin" seems to be a reoccurring them for this election season. The track record of this duo says that they are wolves in sheep’s clothing and the sheep are flocking. The wrapping of the Obama / Biden campaign doesn’t match the content. Bill Clinton had it right. “… it’s all a big fairy tale.” So to invoke a petition for the help of Deity seems to be an act of gamesmanship on their part.

Posted by: MBell_TX | Aug 30, 2008 1:08:02 PM

Actually "Obama Did What", Palin was a vocal supporter of the Bridge to Nowhere project until Alaska lost federal funding. Because Alaska could not afford to do it without federal funding, Palin was forced to reject it. If the change you need is to overturn Roe vs Wade, deregulate insurance companies, and believe women should receive less pay than men (such as McCain believes), then you should definitely vote for McCain/Palin. Does anyone really believe a man who called his wife a C* in public and finds jokes about rape hysterically funny would ever listen or take advice from a woman? McCain said himself the VP job was to "attend funerals and check on the health of the President". Palin was purely symbolic for McCain in attempt to attract women voters, but I find it hard to believe any woman would vote for such an ultraconservative unless they were 100% pro-life even in the cases of incest and rape. I admire Palin for standing up for her beliefs, but I completely disagree with both Palin and McCain's ideology and politics.

The officials are FORCING people to leave this time. During Katrina too many decided to stay and faced the terrible consequences. There were between 60 and 70 thousands vehicles on the streets that could have hauled people out of harm's way. Instead, people choose to stay. Hope all learned a lesson and that the storm will not hit populated ares.
May God's Hands and Wreath be gentle this time.

McCain is intent on trying to keep the Democratic party divided, and at the same time, trying to secure the convervative republican base because he's a weak candidate, who's pandering for votes. He has not concrete plan regarding the issues facing us.

We will not fall for this, because we're a UNITED party.

Hopefully the people of New Orleans are deeply concerned enough to get themselves out of harm's way this time and not wait around for some inept government official, like Mayor Nagin, to tell them what to do. Property can be replaced; lives cannot. And would someone please muzzle Michael Moore who so callously and shamefully said that a major hurricane during the Republican National Convention 'proves there is a God in Heaven'. Typical that he cares more about scoring political points than real people's lives.

Taking up space in a chair and actually accomplishing something are to entirely different events.

sorry folks, but I've got to go.
I've got to try to figure out how I'm going to pay for my children's school clothes.

Something that McCain does not have a clue.

I have not heard to much from Obambi after he gave his speech in the temple of doom. Oh wait, I did hear him and Obiden discussing whether they like their ice cream hard or soft. I guess that could be their first policy debate.

Lovely!!! MCcain thinks that most of Hillary voters will vote for him in the fall so he chose Palin. We will not. That's exactly the tactics he is playing.

Anna, I love you for listing Barack Obama's accomplishments. I don't care if you are White, Black,Hispanic or otherwise. What stands out moist about your comments is that you are obviously very intelligent, informed, color blind and you care a great deal about this country we live in. You obviously care enough to to understand that it is in a very poor state and that people are suffering because of what the current Bush Administration has done. If the rest of you think that Mcain/Palin will make things better, then SHAME ON YOU!!!!

shaarona, one thought would be to get a job. I know that's not the democrat's way but it works!

McCain/Palin 08. Oh happy day. I'm ordering my yard sign today. I can't wait to put on my bumper sticker. I'm even thinking of getting a t-shirt. ;)

shaarona, has to figure out how she is going to pay for her kids clothes,,,, Hilarious!!!!! Youve had how many adult years to achive financial stability? Youre one of those who needs Baracks socialist society to hold your hand, and spoon feed you. Real shame. Look, If your dilemma is truly something you are not to blame for, then I can empathize, but blaming McCain is absolutely delusional.

I can't stand Romney,Pawlenty,Ridge or Lieberman. But surely, these guys must be depressed and pondering if McCain just lost all his bearings by picking this lady for vice president.
After consistently voting against womens issues for almost thirty years, McBush throws a desperate hail mary pass that's bound to lead to an Obama touchdown come November.
He only met this lady once before picking her. And poor Sarah asked 'What exactly does a VP do?"
When asked if she was ready to be a heartbeat away from presidency, she responds;
"Absolutely, Yup, Yup..."
Are you Freakin Kiddin Me!!!
I think McCains mental capacity is now an issue because of this choice.
God Help us All!!!
