Obama Hopes His Vacation Will Cure 'Obama Fatigue'
August 07, 2008 2:59 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Senator Obama says that he hopes to correct any "Obama fatigue" by taking a one week hiatus from the campaign trail to vacation in Hawaii with his family.
A recent Pew Survey shows that 48% of the public is suffering from a case of "Obama fatigue" – hearing too much about Obama in the news. Obama said he hopes that his family's 7 day jaunt to Oahu will remedy some of the perceived overexposure.
"We are going to correct that this week, hopefully with your help," Obama said to reporters returning home from Minneapolis after his last public campaign stop before leaving for Hawaii on Friday.
"I can imagine that folks need a break from politics and they didn't really get one like they normally do," Obama said, blaming the long primary battle with Senator Clinton as one of the culprits of his overexposure, "I think that the majority of people have been fed a constant stream of political chatter."
Obama will leave Chicago tomorrow with his wife and two daughters for Hawaii – the home of his grandmother who he hasn't seen since a trip in 2006. Besides a fundraiser midweek Obama is taking a week off from campaigning.
Obama said that the break is needed not only for him – but for those 48% of Americans who may be seeing and hearing a little too much from him after a long summer of campaign already.
"I'm sure that having a couple weeks off and enjoying the Olympics is probably what the doctor ordered for everybody."
Senator Obama would not answer the question if it is politically wise for him to yield a week of press coverage to John McCain - who will have a full campaign schedule next week.
A good portion of the availability with Obama was dominated by questions of party unity and the possibility of Clinton supporters calling a floor vote at the convention.
Obama described the process with Clinton's staff as "seamless" and seemed annoyed when he was pressed on the issue by reporters.
I'm letting our respective teams work out the details. I don't think we're looking for catharsis. I think what we're looking for is energy and excitement about the prospects of changing this country," Obama said.

Obama is out campaigning. Media focus creates any exposure or over-exposure.
The media focuses on Obama because McCain focuses on Obama. Its that simple.

WE, (Americans) need a break from Obama and his flip -flops...."just what the doctor ordered".

The media focuses on Obama because people want to know about Obama. Imagine Obama taking a month off... would you watch CNN, MSNBC,FOX or ABCnews as much as you do now?
I doubt it. Obama sells and that's plain and simple. As much as anti-Obama supporters would like to say otherwise Obama brings excitement to the race.
He's the guy you love to love OR love to hate.

This is true, and....he also lies...lies alot! I hope he stays in Hawaii.......we don't want him back on stateside, or his wife!

I need a break from it all also. Not just Obama, but the whole thing has gotten so stupid and out of hand. two years is way to long for this crap every day.
I think everyone needs to step back.
I also think the news reporters need to step it up a notch on telling the whole truth and not what they think will draw people in to watch their news. I am ready for just one of them to be fair about both candidates. If McCain says stuff bring it out and stop hiding his crap. If Obama says stuff, never mind you already do it.

there is about 3 months of catch-up the media needs to do on McCains daily flip flops, gaffs and very questionable ties to lobbyists.

McCain having the media all to himself will be great. That way they can catch evry single gaffe Gramps makes.

Now the media will have to focus on McCain lies and flip flops.
It might need more than 90 days though. Any chance they can push election day back?

Posted by: Steve_NJ | Aug 7, 2008 3:55:38 PM
The mainstream media in this country focuses on Obama (a) because it is a story of greater import (b) John McCain has little if nothing to say, other than to steadily beat the drum of his heroism (c) McCain wants the media to focus on Obama, not the details which undermine his faux legacy, the myth of McCain or discuss his age, Karl Rove working on his campaign, 100 year wars, his age and relative mental instability.
Posted by: Christopher London | Aug 7, 2008 3:55:42 PM

Posted by: Paul | Aug 7, 2008 4:02:04 PM
As I said above, the media is focusing where McCain focuses them.
McCain is running a campaign aimed at creating a negative impression of Obama and turning the election into a referendum of that negative impression.
This isn't new. Its what Bush did to Kerry, with a lot of help from the swiftboat veterans.
Now is anyone from either side here going to argue that McCain has been more effective at orienting the media's focus? This is an area in which Obama needs to improve.
But if the media is fixated on Obama, its at least partially because the entire McCain campaign is about... Obama.

Just like the tire pressure gauge. There really is a whole Obama energy plan out there, and the tire pressure thing was advice to one questioner about what she could do to get better mileage.
The ironic thing is that experts tell us properly inflating our tires will save us more gas than offshore drilling could ever produce.

By the way, any sailors in the house? If so, feel free to comment on the following. I just thought about this yesterday.
Among the Services, the one with a perception of having the most elitist officer corps is the Navy; particularly those who are boat schooled (attended the academy).
And the trappings of this elitism are readily apparent on ship. When Marines board a Navy ship, Marine officers are almost always embarrassed by them. For instance, though it differs ship by ship, in many cases enlisted personnel are required to serve officers their meals and even fetch their coffee.
This type of servitude is pretty alien to Marine culture, but at home in the Navy.
And Navy officers have a term for their enlisted personnel - Enlisted Friends. They say it with a snide smile, because the inside joke (one in which only Navy officers think is funny) is the F in friends is universally understood to refer to another word. Seriously. These guys think that's funny.
Now take a look at John McCain, and how he's always calling others "my friend." Kind of makes me wonder. Is this just another juvenile Navy-like tongue-in-cheek joke?

You were already lectured for three days that 0bama's phony "energy plan" is purely deception, aimed to buy votes.
(1) This is a Communist state, yet, so how is 0bama going to rob legitimate private and public companies and spread the goods?
(2) Last time checked, it is still unconstitutional to buy votes in an election in the USA, yet, 0bama promises to give you $1000 if you vote for him and get him elected. What a self-claimed Mr. Constitution Law Prof!!!

Actually, you are right. 0bama has no plan, as far as LONG term energy policy is concerned. 1 million cars contribute to less than 0.77%, plus polluting and generating green gas to produce electricity by burning coals.
10% of corn energy, or any form, is NO solution to do away foreign oil-dependence.
He wants you to stay at the new - 20 years from now - "third world" standard of living by using 15% less energy than you do now.
oh, yeah, plus inflating-your-tire strategy. That will solve your oil-dependency problem.

The who voted for what thing is pretty sophomoric. For instance, if you looked at the bill, it was a compromise between differing energy interests. Yes it has some Republican stuff in it, and yes it has some Democratic stuff in it.
Obama and many other democrats voted for it because they saw it as a starting point in creating incentives toward alternative energy sources.
Why did McCain vote against it? Why does McCain hate renewable energy?

Electing Obama as president would be the most serious mistake our nation has ever made. He was raised for many years as a youth in an almost totally Muslim country with a radical step father and friend who were Islamics. His father has an Islamic burial and his relatives (brothers, radical Muslims, aunts, uncles, step grandmother, friends are Muslims. He could be a sleeper. Remember the two Englishmen in the British Secret Service who were spies for the Russians for almost 20 yrs. before being discovered? They did lots of damage to Great Britian, having their people in Russia killed. Things like this happen and we cannot take a chance.

Since then we've been run to the ground and people want MORE Republican big business oriented mess orchestrated by a 70 yr old who isn't strong on economics, let alone world affairs?
The Republican machine is pulling the same McCarthy era honed dirty tricks of telling lies and figuring that even if someone realizes it will be too late for people to read that part of the story. Nixon sat next to him and oil men were in the audience. 6 degrees of separation.
Obama is SMART, ARTICULATE, and, yes, has charisma. What's so bad about any of that? He also cares about The People.

You might want to ask your State representative energy conservation? How much gas, oil and electricity we could save, if we sent illegal aliens packing.
We cannot keep up the demand for it right now! Oil! Diversity Alliance for Sustainable America.(earthtimes) stated in it's article that if the U.S. grants amnesty and gives citizenship to 12 to 30 million illegal migrants already here, as McCain, Obama and the majority of Democrats propose. That all those naturalized citizens could possibly add 120 million U.S. and foreign-born relatives to the U.S., in the next 20 years whom all will CONSUME MAJOR ENERGY. Does the American people need to escalate the 315 million plus population, the census estimates we have now? To a new total of 435 million?
The executive director of (DASA) admitted "Proposal to reduce energy costs in the U.S. will not work unless we also simultaneously curb U.S. population growth by reducing immigration and curbing teen pregnancies." Severing the illegal immigration occupation and deporting those already here is a good start, but not the complete solution to this serious energy problem that cannot be reversed. Unless another Nikola Tesla, an underrated genius of the 19th century invents a some new form of energy, we will be reliant on fossil fuels for years to come? Clean coal, geothermal, eco-fuel and of course wind power and solar. The latter is energy that is a perpetual source of unimaginable power that knows no bounds.
Illegal immigration has depressed wages, because predatory employers are hiring illegal cheap labor and ignoring citizens and legal residents. Both McCain and Obama just don't get it, that 80 percent of the American people are furious with supporting the 12 to 30 million illegal aliens who have invaded this sovereign country. The cost is astronomical. GOOGLE EAGLEFORUMS. Read unsuppressed facts at NUMBERSUSA. CAPSWEB We have only one chance of stopping OVERPOPULATION within 20 years?

Voters’ Trust for McCain on Key Issues Growing
Tuesday, August 05, 2008
John McCain is now trusted more than Barack Obama on nine out of 14 electoral issues tracked by Rasmussen Reports. The latest national telephone surveys find that McCain has the biggest advantage on the war in Iraq, by a 51% to 39% margin.
Perhaps the most interesting finding of these polls is that McCain has expanded his leads on nearly every issue he had previously had the advantage on, while Obama’s leads have diminished over the past two weeks.
Posted by: david from texas | Aug 7, 2008 7:42:10 PM
In the new survey, McCain has tripled his lead on the topic of immigration. He now has a 45% to 36% advantage over his Democratic opponent, up from a three-point lead two weeks ago.
The Republican also has pulled ahead on the issue of balancing the federal budget. Two weeks ago, the candidates were tied on this issue at 40%. McCain now has a 43% to 40% lead on the issue among voters.
McCain used to be behind on the issue of Social Security but has pulled ahead of Obama for a 44% to 38% lead.
On issues that Obama has previously enjoyed huge advantages, such as health care and education, his leads have decreased. On health care, Obama leads 46% to 41%, down from a 12 percentage-point lead just two weeks ago. On education, Obama leads 43% to 39%, down from a 10-point lead two weeks ago. On environmental issues, Obama’s advantage over McCain has gone from 14 percentage points down to eight this week.
The economy is the top issue for the majority of voters this election season. Voters have consistently trusted the Democratic Party more on this issue, but the two presidential candidates are tied at 45% as to who voters trust more. A week prior, Obama had a statistically insignificant one percentage point lead on the issue.
On national security, an issue that McCain consistently performs well on, the Republican leads 52% to 40%. His lead represents an improvement from the eight-point lead he held the week before.
Posted by: david from texas | Aug 7, 2008 7:43:42 PM
McCain continues to lead, in most cases, tied, or quickly shrinking the gap between him and Obama on key issues facing Americans. I feel that McCain is being consistent and will continue to do so. This consistency on the issues is helping to take and overcome Obama. Keep up the good work, Mr. McCain.....you WILL be our next President of the USA.

Three More Swing States Polls Show Obama Falling
Increase DecreaseJuly 31, 2008 (LPAC)--
Sen. Barack Obama's British souffle continues to sink: Even before the telltale appearance of "signal" pieces in various U.S. press about Obama's "hubris" bringing him down, polls were showing his putative candidacy falling in swing states which a Democratic candidate for President has to win.
The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute today published three more swing state polls--taken in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida from July 23-29, as Obama was returning from his presumptuous world tour, meeting with visiting heads of state in Washington, etc. The polls show all three states shifting against Obama in a match-up against Sen. John McCain, like three other swing states polled last week--Colorado, Minnesota, and Michigan.
Releasing the large surveys today, the Institute says, "Illinois Sen. Barack Obama's recent overseas tour apparently didn't help him" in swing states. The Florida and Michigan polls show those state in statistical ties, whereas Obama had 4-6% leads in mid-June. Independent voters in Florida dumped him: In June, Obama led by 10% among Florida independents, but now he is behind by 5%. In Pennsylvania, where Obama led by 12% in the mid-June poll, he now leads by 7%.

And people have the nerve to jump on Dubya for the amount of time he spends on vacation...
Wasn't Obama relaxing in the Virgin Islands not that long ago?
And, if he stresses out over the campaign, he sure won't be able to handle the job.
Change?
The only change is that Obama doesn't vacation in Crawford, Texas...

Jayhawk....we DON"T want Obama in Texas!

Obama seems to blame the very press that has fed and promoted his campaign - and whose access he has aggressively sought. Question: How many reporters will be following Obama to Hawaii - all those who aren't already assigned to the Beijing Olympics?

Well this will be a tell-all week for McCain. Of course McCain could totally ruin his vacation and announce his VP tomorrow; Obama would be back in no time.
Realistically though I think this will really be a make or break week for McCain. He will be the only show in town. Now is his time to shine, to put forth McCain instead of anti-Obama. If he doesn't convince a good deal of the undecided now then I think it will be more of an uphill battle for him.
I personally think he has the capability to do this, just as he has in the past. If McCain does come ahead in the next round of polls then Obama will be the one playing catch up until November.

48% fatigued
52% not fatigued
Sounds familiar? Kind of resembles presidential poll numbers???
Obama suppporters, the 52%, are fine with it.
Have a great vacation Barack!

"The ironic thing is that experts tell us properly inflating our tires will save us more gas than offshore drilling could ever produce."
I don't remember ever laughing so hard! Thanks, Paul!

I suppose Obama reminding you to inflate your tires at a proper air pressure to save you some fuel is better than having McCain proposing a "tax holiday" so the oil companies could raise the price of gasoline by the same amount and the tax money that goes to fix the potholes will be lost forever .
I suppose reminding you to inflate your tires must be "too cerebral" to digest for some folks . Your brain needs a vacation too.........

"I suppose reminding you to inflate your tires must be "too cerebral" to digest for some folks."
Not at all. Everyone wants to save a buck. What is obviously too "cerebral" for the left to digest is that BHO has concluded that it will save as much oil as what could be gained by off-shore drilling. Be my guest, swallow that load. Your mileage may vary (Pun intended).

Three months ago Obama was in St. Thomas for Easter, while Hillary was in church. Now off to Hawaii. I bet if this guy ever gets near the WH, aside from being the most advisor driven Presidency ever...Obama will be vacationing every opportunity. He hasn't held a job in the Senate really, as he's always been running for Prez. He's only done about 160 days in the Senate. Does anybody really think this guy deserves to be CIC or have what it takes?
NO BAMA.....McCAIN '08/HILLARY '12

HP in Boston....I am with you. I am one of the 18 million HILLARY supporters who will also be voting McCain and Obama campaign should be sh--ing their pants. I just saw the numbers and 27% of Hillary supporters are voting McCain. I can't wait until the months after November, when analysis of Obama's loss points directly at Hillary supporters who defected to McCain or sat it out. Personally, I'd rather they vote McCain.
