Pawlenty Continues Tire Gauge Critique of Obama

ABC News' Imtiyaz Delawala Reports: Minnesota Gov. and prospective GOP vice presidential nominee Tim Pawlenty continued criticism of Sen. Barack Obama's energy policies in an RNC conference call this evening, saying Obama has misunderstood the energy crisis, and is now "scrambling to make up for his lack of judgment" on the issue.

"I don't think he has a compass when it comes to this issue. He's obviously thrashing about to catch up to the idea of the week," he said of Obama's energy plan outlined on Monday. "We're glad he's migrated more and more to Sen. McCain's position and vision for a better energy future. But it's obviously belated, it's obviously half-hazard."

Pawlenty again hit Obama for his advice to a voter last week to to fully inflate their tires as a way to conserve fuel, saying it was an ineffective substitute for measures such as offshore oil drilling, expanding nuclear energy, and a gas tax holiday. Pawlenty introduced a tire gauge as a prop during a speech at an Ames, Iowa GOP campaign headquarters opening on Saturday -- a prop Sen. John McCain's campaign has embraced in its criticisms of Obama's energy policies this week.

"This icon of the tire pressure gauge is important," Pawlenty said. "Having tires properly inflated helps a little bit but that is not nearly anything close to the broad and comprehensive approach we need."

Obama disputed the charge at a town hall meeting in Berea, Ohio today.

"They're making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant," Obama said. "You know, they think it is funny that they are making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework."

But beyond the tire pressure issue, Pawlenty said Obama should call on the Democratic leadership to return to Washington to address off-shore drilling.

"Rather than talking about tire gauges, which is helpful to a small degree, he should be using his relationship with the Democratic leaders of Congress, Nancy Pelosi and the Senate leader, to get Congress to reconvene and deal with these issues in a crisis session this summer," Pawlenty said.

Pawlenty has served as a leading surrogate for the McCain campaign and continues to be at the top of the Republican nominee's prospective vice presidential list. Pawlenty will speak at the National Press Club in Washington, DC tomorrow on the topic of "'Sam's Club Republicans' and how the Republican Party can achieve success by addressing the needs of this group of voters."

The oil companies can drill on the leases they have now , but they will not as long as there is enough foreign oil that can be bought and refined cheaper. Even if they wanted to their is a backlog for the offshore equipment they would need. Wuit sticking you head up your posterior for political purposes That's the same mentality that scared us into Iraq. Won't work any more.

I think the icon of the fallen IH-35 bridge in Minnesota speaks for Pawlenty.

Yesterday Obama laid a comprehensive and detailed energy plan consisting of advocating wind and solar power, natural gas, biofuels, hybrid cars, more jobs, $1,000 energy rebates for Americans, etc. And all you people try to do is falsely frame a tire inflation suggestion as Obama's one and only energy proposal to the American people!!
T. Boone Pickens even supports Obama's energy plan and all you people talk about are tire gauges??

How's that Brooklyn Bridge the Republicans sold ya??

Obama will say anything he thinks the voters want to hear just to get elected.

He is against offshore drilling no matter what he says now ...

For Obama, this election is not about the economy, it is not about the IraQ War, it is not about the housing crisis, it is not about offshore drilling ... This election is not about you or me ... This election, for Obama, if about OBAMA ... Obama in the White House is what it is about...

Anyone who thinks this election is about them need to go get drunk ...
Then, at least, they have a reason for being this naive and plain stupid, for lack of a better word.

If anyone of you, Obamamaniacs out there, think Obama cares about you, you need to go get drunk tonight ...
In MCCAIN, at least I know what I will be getting ...

This election for Obama is ONLY ABOUT OBAMA ... Wake UP, Dumbocrats

The American Automobile Association (AAA) says that for every pound of pressure your tires are under-inflated, you lose 2% of mileage on your car....And the United States Department of Transportation states that approximately 25% of all commuters are driving a few pounds short of full pressure. Do the math.

Anyone arguing against these facts IS truly "ignorant". No wonder this country's economy is in the condition it's in. People can't even see the truth when it's staring them in their ignorant faces.

I laugh and laugh at you Obama supporters for grasping at straws to claim that Obama was right! LOL! YES, it is true that properly inflated tires will help, but that is not what he said; he specifically said that by doing that, we can replace our dependence on off shore drilling. It was an illinformed, uneducated, and ignorant statement. THAT is the issue, and that is the one that he has been trying to back track. He is now trying to call his opponents ignorant, but he is the one who said it!

Why do you think he is now flipping on offshore drilling, if inflating tires was all you needed to do? And if inflating tires was all we needed to do, that was in our power all along, why haven't we done it, and we won't need to buy oil from Iran anymore?????

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This coming from mulleted douche who was too worried about re-election to support his own states infrastructure. Yeah, great idea idiots give this guy the VP slot, he's got blood on his hands just like Mccain and all the other neocons! Oh wait, he just cut his hair to make himself not look like such a hick, whoops..

Posted by: tadow | Aug 5, 2008 11:07:54 PM

He said something as simple as properly inflating tires could replace the NEW proposed offshore drilling. He never said it could replace existing offshore drilling. THAT is the issue.

In addition, he NEVER said that was all people needed to do. As far as why American commuters haven't done it. Perhaps that's because the average American is ignorant.

One of the first things Pawlenty did when he became governor was take away health insurance to some state employees. Now he wants to comment on Obama. Take it from someone who lives up north where he is governor. The man is a self-righteous Christian who thinks it's ok to deny health insurance to state employees if they don't believe as he does. The only bigger Bush-McCain lap dog in these parts of the woods is Norm Coleman, another embarrassment to the good folks of MN.

I don't know if I should laugh at you or cry for you with your ignorant response.

The Republicans' aversion to facts & science would be laughable but for the fact that some of them actually have high ranking positions in our government. Fortunately, that's all going to change soon.

Obama is so inexperienced and unqualified. It baffles me how my former party chose this guy

I'm not sure what y'all are arguing about. It's a sad commentary that Paris Hilton actually has a better idea (well, at least a better writer) about energy policy than most of those posting here.

You bonehead supporters so short sighted, only bogged down on the little devilish inflating your tires from your political Jesus. You really think he is The One. This phony has no clue of what long term energy stragtegy is.

if you want to be devil, be a big one - Revolution We Can Believe In! - Communist Dictator Chairman Mao.

Change vs. Revolution? such a little devil. short sighted. So fitting to come up with an inflating-your-tire energy policy.
