Powell Says He's Not Going to Dem Convention

Share

August 13, 2008 5:53 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis and David Chalian Report: Gen. Colin Powell told ABC News on Wednesday that he will not be going to the Democratic National Convention, disputing a suggestion made earlier in the day on the Fox News Channel by Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol.

"I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol's musings,” Powell told ABC News. “I am not going to the convention. I have made this clear."

After telling ABC News by phone that he would not be going to the Democratic National Convention, Powell ended the conversation without entertaining any follow-up questions as to whether he would be crossing party lines to endorse Obama.

Citing unnamed people who have "talked directly to the Obama campaign," Kristol told the Fox News Channel on Wednesday that "Colin Powell will endorse Senator Obama and he may well give a speech to  the Democratic convention explaining his endorsement of Obama."

When asked about Kristol's suggestion that Powell might attend the Democratic National Convention, former Reagan White House Chief of Staff and Powell confidante Ken Duberstein took a swipe at Kristol.

"Consider the source," said Duberstein, referring to Kristol who once served as a top aide to Vice President Dan Quayle. "He was the person who advertised himself as Dan Quayle's brain. Colin Powell has no plans to attend either convention."

While Powell was emphatic about his intention not to attend the Democratic National Convention, his endorsement in the presidential race remains an open question.

Wow, Powell and Duberstein are funny guy's. Pretty good zingers in there against Kristol aka "Dan Qualye's brain" and his "musings."

And that is why Powell is presidential. He shows leadership and judgement. When in doubt, lay out.

I sure wish he were the VP choice.

Posted by: mase | Aug 13, 2008 6:13:36 PM

Yawn.

Posted by: Jo | Aug 13, 2008 6:16:08 PM

It seems apparent that Kristol assumed something he shouldn't have. You know what they say about those that assume.

Posted by: Scotti | Aug 13, 2008 6:20:08 PM

There is no way Obama is going to cross party lines for a VP - not with all the Hillary supporters still withholding their support for Obama. I think Kristol just likes to yank chains, which seems to have worked.

Posted by: Susan | Aug 13, 2008 6:29:18 PM

Has Bill Kristol ever been right about anything? What a buffoon.

"mase. you call it corn." Anyway, BillK has never concealed his dislike of Colon, this was a pre-emptive to force Powell out of a game plan. And it worked.

Statistically speaking Colin Powell will be supporting Obama.

The woman is brilliant; and he?

ah, uh, ah.. er..

DUH

Posted by: Michael | Aug 13, 2008 7:30:47 PM

And with his great credibility we should care why?

Posted by: CC | Aug 13, 2008 7:33:02 PM

Why on earth would Colin Powell indorse Obama for President of the United States - Obama couldn't carry Gen Powells briefcase to a meeting.

Again does anyone really think Obama has a chance in hell of becoming the President? It will never happen -

We need a man or a woman for that job not a school boy with no experience. Hilary was superior in every way but the far left of the party undid her.

It makes for great arguements but Obama has no chance when the chips are down - Jesse Jackson would have been a better choice. Colin Powell was my number 1 - 2 and 3 pick but he didn't want it - and after looking how the press treats you I don't blame him.

Posted by: Mack | Aug 13, 2008 7:53:24 PM

Who wants Powel, anyway? He is old news, and his popularity is non-existent. After being used as a mouth piece for lies by the war mongers, this man's credibility is zero.

Posted by: Ekanem | Aug 13, 2008 7:55:16 PM

It seems the possible endorsement of Barack Obama by Colin Powell, a genuine American statesman, patriot and hero, scares the mess out of pseudo-patriots, extremists, and racists. This is a good thing. For now we know who we need to pray for, since God loves all sinners, including Barack Obama and the people who love or hate him.

Posted by: Frank | Aug 13, 2008 8:58:34 PM

Exactly, talking about tax credits when there are people who can't afford to go to the hospital anyways. I have insurance and I get it from my job at an affordable rate, but there are people who can't afford to get employer-provided insurance because they are not paid enough to afford it. A tax credit won't help if you can't pay in the first place. Obama 2008!

Stanley, I download the policy statements of both candidates and read them carefully, weighing how my taxes will be affected, how national security will be affected, and what our country will be like under the leadership of the two candidates.

Of course I am voting for Obama. There really isn't any other logical choice.

Now didn't Hilary Clinton and John Edwards point out is State Senate record? Didn't he already go over that and how he, unlike most Republican elitist, became a community organizer instead of make it big and rich, then get old, then run for office. I would like you all to listen when he talks for once or read what his ideas are. McCain's ideas are more of the same and haven't worked for the past 8 years so it will not work the next 4 or 8. Republicans always want to do nothing and hope it works out. I'm happy that Obama is going for it and he's going to win in the end. Obama 2008!

What is the DNC up to now that they would misrepresent Gen Colin Powell, who served his country well, and is a long-time Republican. The DNC no longer represents the Dem party. The DNC have botched the fairness of the election process. Their latest actions of misrepresentation are a continuation of their ineffective and strong-arm tactics. Their DNC candidate is behind this and supporting them, otherwise he would have spoken up long ago against this. It's time for Dems to wake up and stop the DNC debacle with votes for the best Republicans.

This whole discussion, Powell going to the Democratic convention, sounds like it has a connection to racial politics to me. I don't care for Obama, but if this is a right-wing maneuver to try to falsely paint high-ranking people of color as being aligned with Obama, regardless of political persusasion, in order to create a white working class backlash, I'm quite certain that it will not work. I don't trust Bill Kristol, I frankly think he's a dirty tricks kind of guy.

I LIKE IT!

"musings" A fabulously dismissive (and entirely appropriate) label for what is forthcoming from Kristol's word processing program. I'm gonna steal it; since the NYT unwisely decided to give him a platform outside right-wing communications circles, there ends up being more reason to comment about him derisively.

How does anyone know if they are voting for Barry Soetoro, or Barack Obama? Does he have citizenship in Indonesia as well as the US and where is his allegiance? Did he legally change his name to Barack Obama in Hawaii or is the name on the ballot not legal? So many questions and absolutely no answers.

stanley do you believe there is ever a reason to defend yourself militarily

Posted by: a fred | Aug 13, 2008 10:05:25 PM

We all believe we should defend yourself militarily when there is a threat. Iraq wasn't a threat. Afghanistan was and we left that alone to deal with Iraq, then we found out there was nothing to deal with in Iraq, and now we want to go back to Afghanistan and add on Pakistan. Next time we involve ourselves in a war can it be for a real threat? Al-Qaida was in Pakistan the whole time, so let's go after the ones who did the bombing. Obama 2008!

Posted by: rodney | Aug 13, 2008 10:28:57 PM

Nope, because there is corruption throughout this show government that Bush helped put together. Yeah he put more troops in there. Obama would have to do that too. Even the Iraqis want us out. They just asked for a clear timeline on troop withdrawals. It's done, it has to change, and it's time to end this. Obama 2008!

Posted by: Marcus | Aug 13, 2008 10:29:02 PM

Now Russia is using what we did to justify what they're doing in Georgia, and probably will do in the other former countries not covered by NATO. We've opened a can of worms that we can't do anything about. It's time for a change and we can't keep fighting. Obama 2008!

They say those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. I remember the 1972 election, Nixon was very unpopular with Watergate, Vietnam, etc. Democrats were fighting amongst themselves, McGovern received the Dem. nomination, Humphrey supporters felt robbed were not going to vote for McGovern, vote for Nixon, stay home, etc. Nixon won by a landslide. Fast forward to 2008, any of this sound like Deja Vu boys and girls. We're going to wind up with McCain like it or not.

The "Fox Noise" fingered Edwards' shenanagans 2 weeks before he owned up to it and abc and the rest of the media finally covered it. Don't blame the messanger if Kristol doesn't know what he talking about.

Posted by: mikewolf9 | Aug 14, 2008 12:48:35 AM

If the American political-media system were differet, I suppose Mr. Powell might run. But as an old solider, I guess he doesn't feel comfortable mouthing worthless platitudes about change and changing his stance to suit whatever audience he is talking to an that moment.

Posted by: mikewolf9 | Aug 14, 2008 12:55:59 AM

I have great respect for Powell and would have voted for him if he ever tossed his hat in the ring (unlike the distasteful Obama), however, his whole career would be a sham if he publicly declared support of Obama. Now he can go into the booth and pull the lever for the guy, like 98% of blacks in this country will, whether the black Rebubs tell you that or not....but we'll never know. I believe he will NOT publicly endorse Obama.

Obama gets elected and there goes our military even more, budget cuts, more downsizing, and we'll be back to being left even worse then before Desert Storm.. not enough troop planes, new technology alreay there for missle defense will be tossed aside just as obama said he would do as he thinks we dont need it, he already made plenty of enemies within the military. My bet is something will happen once again to the miltary vote come november.

Posted by: bill | Aug 14, 2008 9:09:08 AM

geevill - that's rather insulting to Powell, suggesting he's going to follow race rather than issues in making his personal choice of which candidate to support. Powell is a serious guy, who achieved a lot and who would most likely be president right now if he had wanted it.

Yes, he has that chink in the armor of his presentation to the UN, building the false case for our Iraq invasion.

Still, I think he carries a lot of credibility and I'm hoping he does cross party lines to make a public endorsement. The fact that he hasn't flat out said I'm supporting the Republican is intriguing.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 14, 2008 10:32:00 AM

Posted by: CuriousIndep. | Aug 14, 2008 12:07:18 PM

30yrdem - I don't think Obama's team would play those kind of games. It would be too easy for Powell himself to put an end to it, and if irritated at having his name used, to really embarrass the Obama team in the process.

What I find interesting is that Powell isn't just ending the speculation by flatly stating an easy one-liner - "I'm supporting my party's nominee."

He hasn't done that yet. All he has said is he's not going to either convention.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 14, 2008 12:12:00 PM

It was Powell who convinced Bush Sr to not finish the job in Iraq like Stormin Norman wanted to. and yes we have learned blacks like Clyburn are only supporting Obama because of race.

Shalom and Michael-Thank you for saying the obvious. Powell eagerly threw his integrity out the window when he sold his soul to promote the Iraq lie. Not the craziest thought I've ever read here, but it does sound awful Clintonian.

Posted by: Paul | Aug 14, 2008 4:23:38 PM

Paul..just wishful thinking..no actually I believe that the next President will be a one term President since neither Obama nor McCain, in my opinion, have much to offer..If Obama's does take it I truly believe he will be Carter the sequel high taxes, higher unemployment, gas lines etc; therefore, he will have to contend with a stronger Republican candidate in 2013..If McCain takes it, I believe he is too tired and old to go for a second term as well as a shoot from the lip attitude (it disappoints me to say that as I lean repub)...Should be an interesting next 4 years, I just hope we survive it.........

Posted by: Bob | Aug 15, 2008 8:56:56 AM

Colin is more than likely feeling that he has played his role and given to his country above and beyond most and many are pleased and admire him. Regardless of his mis-information that was given to him that initiated the war, it does not change who he is and his possibilities and forward thinking toward change and integrity. It is my hope that he does make the decision to be apart of a turning point in our time in our country. That something inside him says, "GET OUT THERE AND REPRESENT YOUR CONCIOUS FOR THE WHOLE OF AMERICA." Perhaps this is not his time to sit on the side line or the phone lines with one step into retirement, but instead start part two of his journey. There is unfinished work in this man and I hope he realizes that and gets on with the business of HOPE & PROMISE that he and his country deserves! His leadership should be seen and I would love to see it again behind Obama!

Colin has done nothing but wear a uniform and speak with a deep voice.Get off the military garbage.911 was 7 years ago.

Posted by: rick | Aug 22, 2008 11:46:54 PM

The military donations are very misleading. We now know that there is over $200 million including $38 million from overseas that Obama will NOT tell the FEC the names of those who made the donations. After the complete FEC post election investigation is complete it is likely we will see that a lot of the donations to Obama in the name of service men actually came from other sources. A poll of military personel show McCain with a massive lead in support from military personel. A closer look at the details show McCain at 70% plus in a majority of the different groups with the only group Obama showing a lead is among blacks in the military. Doesn't matter if it is commissioned or non commissioned. White or non black minority. All groups except blacks show McCain with a companding lead in military support. Even with blacks Obama's support is 20 points lower than blacks in the general public. Powell was looking for a way to get back for being quietly being forced out. He had often publicly presented positions that were in contrast to the official US position and tried to set US policy himself.
