Romney: Biden Clips Are Worse Than Mine

Share

August 26, 2008 4:19 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis reports: Mitt Romney suggested Tuesday that criticisms he leveled at John McCain during the GOP primaries would not block him from becoming the Republican nominee for vice president, arguing that he never questioned his one-time rival's readiness to be president the way the Democratic nominee for vice president questioned Barack Obama.

"The clips that they have of Joe Biden," said Romney, referring to a McCain attack ad, "are ones in which he questioned Obama's readiness to be president.

"I didn't say that he was not qualified to become president," said Romney, referring to his criticism of McCain. "Republicans in our debates pointed out differences on issues and relative capacity. That's very different from saying that he is not qualified to be president."

The former Massachusetts governor downplayed the significance of his primary clashes with McCain following a Christian Science Monitor lunch with reporters. Romney was in Denver, Colo., as part of a broader Republican effort to frame Obama as "A Mile High and an Inch Deep."

Romney is scheduled to campaign for McCain on Wednesday in Henderson, Nev. His office has not, however, released details on where he will be on Friday when McCain is expected to announce the identity of his running mate at a large rally in Dayton, Ohio.

Asked where he would be on Friday, Romney told ABC News, "Still T.B.D."

McCAIN & ROMNEY: This is the team - and the only one on either side of the aisle -with the expertise and experience to hit on all cylinders: National Security, Economy, Health Care, Governance, and Family Values. Together, they bring it all to the table. Both are fully vetted, Romney's age is just right -not too young or too old to match McCain, he is seriously smart -- the only candidate recognized with global economy credentials in the entire race, and he is a believable candidate for the position a heartbeat away from the Presidency. They are alike, yet different; they both convey competence, success and leadership; and, yes, Romney helps a McCain presidency “look” better.

Finally, Romney can deliver Michigan and strengthens McCain in other key western states. As for the anti-Mormon Evangelicals who still refuse to believe Mormons are Christians, surveys showed that by the end of the primary season, Romney was carrying as many Evangelical votes as Huckabee. There’s unquestionably a narrow strata of anti-Mormon Evangelicals but they don’t like McCain either, surely won't vote for Obama, and will likely stay home. The majority of Evangelicals are driven by critical core values that will send them to the polls, if only to ensure that the next two Supreme Court Justices are not rabid pro-abortionists. Evangelicals understand that there's a lot at stake that will matter long after the next President or Vice President have come and gone.

Further, the hits Romney took from the liberal media while a primary candidate would now be emerging in a very different context and have much less punch. How can, say, a Chris Matthews, criticize Romney for “flip-flopping” after Matthew’s guy, Obama, continues to flip by the day? Besides, Newsweek has now determined – once Obama started doing it – that flip-flopping is good.

And given Obama’s religious baggage (just why did he stay in that church for 20 years?), how do the Dems go after Romney on religion? In fact, McCain could use the occasion of selecting Romney as his running mate to take an aggressive and public stand against religious bigotry of any kind.

And then there’s the economy: Romney’s got bona fides. You can’t refute his experience nor his success in the global economy. Obama has none. Zero. And Biden on the ticket doesn't help. McCain's major management experience in the military joined with Romney's economic credentials presents a compelling team, and begs the question: What has Obama ever done to merit voters' confidence in his grasp of global economic issues?

America is starting to feel desperate for leaders who can rebuild this nation’s economic stability; a President who made his money writing books just doesn’t instill confidence in me. I want the guy who turned Staples into a global giant and managed to relight the torch of a dying Olympics. And, by the way, voters don't care how many houses the President owns - in fact, those houses represent their ability to be economic successful...something America could use a big dose of right now. Give us our future. Give us McCain/Romney.

Christian mom - who is a dude, I hope if McCain picks Romney and ANYBODY GETS ON HIS BACK ABOUT RELIGION.....WOW, WE CAN BRING WRIGHT BACK FOR SOME MORE ENTERTAINMENT! YEAH OBAMA'S JUDGEMENT SITTING IN THAT HATFUL CHURCH FOR 20 YEARS! BRING IT ON. LDS (Mormons) are some of the most God fearing, service oriented Christians out there.
Bring it on bots.....WE WANT REV. WRIGHT BACK WITH HIS RANTS AGAINST THIS COUNTRY.

No matter who McCain picks, it won't change who he is, or isn't. Picking Huckabee won't turn him into a pious moralizer who wants to shove his "values" down everyone elses throats. Picking Romney won't turn him into a wealthy CEO type who decides everything on business calculatuions regardless of the human factor. What won't change is he is a 72 year old who has done nothing in his life on his own. A low energy, low information type like Bush who can't conceive of a better tomorrow for America, because he doesn't believe in most of what America is about - diversity, risk/reward, tolerance.

Does anyone really think "Christian mom" is actually a Christian? It's typical Obamacat's tactics. They can pretend to be "typical white woman", "veteran", "65 old south white" because they dream to use these info to influence other people.

Bob...what says McCain doesn't support diversity, risk and tolerance. Did he not risk his life for his country with his service. Did he not tolerate torture and captivity, and as for the diversity, he has friends and collegues from every ethnicity. What are you tallking about you bot?

I consider McCain more of moderate than anything----they call him a maverick because he does not tow the party line on all issues------he has more vote for this.

and now he apologies for that...Why?

Debra:

You really think any Republican stand for diversity? really?

Posted by: shalom | Aug 26, 2008 5:43:07 PM

Nonsense....in any election with a slowing economy no matter the reason, the party in charged of the presidency is blamed and punished. Obama should be way way way ahead............but nope, he is losing votes. This is simply because of Obama is this corrupt, stupid, clueless, and racist that most despite the media covering up for Obama are finally catching on.

Posted by: chattyway | Aug 26, 2008 5:43:52 PM

The Republican Party seems out of touch with mainstream America.....

Just look at those in leadership....Condi Rice is the highest level AA republican.......Just what is that party about?

There's just something about the Republican Party that does not resonate with me......They seem backwards

Posted by: shalom | Aug 26, 2008 5:45:01 PM

shalom....I think it took cashews for McCain to come out and say that way back when they voted on this he didn't vote for it. I'd like to know his reason behind it..I'll look it up...think it had to do with $$.

Posted by: DLM | Aug 26, 2008 5:46:15 PM

Cathy, you want to talk drug use? Cindy became addicted to pain pills after the doctored placed her on them for severe recurring pain........Obama on the other hand, chosed (and still choosing given his comments and friends) to get stoned out of his head with a variety of differnt things---alcholol, pot, and coke. There are some huge differences.

Hell have no fury like a woman, and we women remember the lies and names Obama called and told of the Clintons and others. Good-bye, Obama.

Posted by: chattyway | Aug 26, 2008 5:49:44 PM

Shalom....Condi and Colin are big Republicans and I bet they will pull the lever for your guy Obama too. Not to worry.

Posted by: DLM | Aug 26, 2008 5:50:34 PM

chatty, many presidents and others in politics did drugs and drank when they were younger, so what. It's ridiculous that it's even an issue with you. And sorry you are just making excuses for Cindy. It is all the same.
