Stephanopoulos: No Roll Call Vote for Clinton?
August 24, 2008 8:11 PM
ABC News' Nitya Venkataraman reports: After former rivals Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton worked to broker a deal where Clinton's name would be placed into nomination alongside Obama's at the Democratic convention, speculation swirls in Denver that Clinton insiders may be willing to accept no roll-call vote, fearing the blame of disrupting the party's efforts at unity.
ABC News' Chief Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos says no decisions have yet been made, but that the state-by-state vote faces the possibility of elimination in favor of Obama's nomination "by acclamation."
"The whole idea of a roll call vote could be in flux at this point," Stephanopoulos told ABC's Charles Gibson on World News Sunday night.
"The Clinton people here, they've said they wanted catharsis, they wanted that roll call, but they may not get it," Stephanopoulos said, describing the decision as one being discussed at the highest levels of Clinton's camp. "They don't want to be blamed for any trouble at this convention."
The roll call vote was planned in an effort to soothe Clinton supporters bitterly disappointed by her loss to Obama during the primary season.
An ABC News/Washington Post poll released Sunday showed Obama only receiving the support of 79 percent of Democrats -- a number Stephanopoulos says is due in part to the fact that Obama doesn't yet have all of Clinton's supporters on board.

Voting and elections aren't that hard to figure out! Someone gets the most votes-that is the winner. Someone gets the least votes-that is the loser. The idea that you must somehow "soothe" the loser's in some way is ridiculous! Grow up, LOSER'S!!!Get over it!

Democrats are not unifying because Obama is grossly under-qualified and will be the nominee by selection not election. Obama and his camp are all corrupt and will never win over the rest of the Democrats.

I think neil1785 is either a dumb stupid idiot or a troll.
Clinton should be encouraging everyone to put the primary behind them. An in your face roll call vote doesn't do that. As far as I'm concerned, she's picking a scab. Concede already. If Republicans love her so much, (LOL), they should nominate her as VP at their convention. Otherwise, it's none of their business.

you are only deaf but also dumb. and likely a caucasian. Jesus Christ had the same problem with the Pharisee who could not see salvation. You may not think much of yourself. be very care when you talk about one of GODS precious creation.May you finally receive the LOVE And PEACE that is so lacking in you life. Disagree if you must but dont disrespect.that only comes back to you.

And he won't have this Clinton voter, ever!
Posted by: tiredtoo | Aug 24, 2008 8:52:37 PM
Strike One: Rather than embrace the positive legacy of the Clinton years, he choses to discredit it to keep spotlight on himself.
Strike Two: Obama selects Biden as his VP, ignoring 18 million voters and his own Democratic Convention delegates who wanted Hillary on the ticket.
Strike Three: Obama officials now pressuring Clinton supporters to opt for nomination by acclamation rather than having a roll call vote to assure all support for Hillary is nullified.
Obama is OUT! Ballgame over!

Thrash out McCain...He's dumb, very old, senile and a mysogenist. Not to mention like "neil1785" inferred, a stupid idiot...Dumb in debates, dumb in the economy, dumb in national security, dumb in foreign (?)... what is McCain good at anyways except dumping his first wife who stood by his side and trade her in for a rich younger woman... If this the best McCain can get as a supporter, not only is he in trouble but our whole country as well!!!

Wow they just want to keep pis-ing Hillary supporters off. I'm so glad....keep it up, we are 25% voting for McCain and 27% undecided...taken from 18 million.....they will keep driving their numbers down.
LOVE HILLARY, LIKE BIDEN, CAN'T STAND OBAMA AT THE TOP OF ANY TICKET.

Ed, you must not remember history too well. Gore got many more votes but he lost the White House.

What is Obama afraid off?
That Clinton will get the delegates she is suppose to have and he will get voted out.
That would be the only reason to deny a roll call vote.
Posted by: seah | Aug 24, 2008 8:59:39 PM
The nominee is supposed to get a specified number of delegates. So far NO ONE has voted.
Posted by: geevill | Aug 24, 2008 9:07:22 PM
We not only vote for a candidate, we also are voting for a party. For so-called democrats to vote for McCain is to further the right-wing conservative republican agenda, with all that that entails. If you think that it'll be four years and out if McCain is elected, and then we can vote in a democrat (or do you still have Hillary in mind?), you are being really naive. The damage that McCain can do in four years is astonishing and frightening to think about. More wars, a probable military draft instituted, health insurance in total shambles, conservative judges taking over the supreme court and most likely overturning Roe V. Wade..
Hillary supporters who defect to McCain and the Republicans are signing the warrant to end any possibility of Hillary becoming president in the future because if McCain wins this election because of your defection, you will be held responsible and your votes that help continue the horror of the Bush years will not be forgotten.

There doesn't seem to be much point in a roll call, as far as I'm concerned. It's over. Clinton supporters should be focused on what is best for the country at this point. Further, if they support Clinton so passionately, perhaps a share of them should donate $1 or $2 to help her pay off her debt.
Whenever the talk centers on experience, I have to ask, what experience does McCain have? He's been in Congress for nearly 30 years, but what has he done while there? He certainly doesn't have a clear understanding of domestic issues, which are very critical right now. His understanding of international issues seems rudimentary at best. He seems to completely miss the role of diplomacy--a serious red flag as we continue with two wars.
Posted by: mary | Aug 24, 2008 9:21:10 PM
Give me a break! You Obamabots need to STOP blaming Hillary for everything that goes wrong for Obama. If Obama loses the election in Novemebr it will be because he has pissed off too many people and shown his total lack of ability.
Posted by: yh120952 | Aug 24, 2008 9:22:50 PM
I voted for Hillary in the primary but was so umimpressed with the way she managed her campaign to say nothing of her organization that I grew to have doubts of her management of the executive branch of government. She has been a terrific senator for NY and I hope that Obama uses her talents and intelligence when he becomes president; I always thought she would be better in a position other than veep.
Posted by: Catherine | Aug 24, 2008 9:24:59 PM
Say what you want about McCain's grasp and experience, but Obama has not a fraction of either. He is proving it week by week.

As much as I hate for Clinton to not be on the roll call, I think this will be better for everyone because when Obama loses, Clinton will have done everything in her power to save him from the loss.
Democrat for McCain 2008

Yep, Obama doesn't have all the Dumocrat vote-- and never will. When are the Obamazoids going to stop trying to blame the absence of those votes on Hillary Clinton? They, in their blind fervor, seem not to understand that it is entirely possible to dislike Obama based on his lack of experience, his flipflopping, and his immaturity, and to find him to be an unsuitable candidate? I would guess it's because it's easier to blame Obama's flagging polls on the Clintonistas than it is to face reality! Long before Bambi was anointed (certainly not elected) as the candidate, the polls showed he couldn't beat McCain; nonetheless, the Dums chose him anyway (doh!) and now seem to be astonished that there is a statistical tie when they should be ahead of the Repugs by double digits.
I'm an unaffiliated voter (don't belong to any party at all), and am disgusted by the choices facing me in November. I've voted in every election since 1968, and there have been a number of "lesser of two evils" choices over the years, but none quite as disturbing as this one. My choice of candidates, if I vote this time, has absolutely nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. In simple terms, I'm holding my nose and voting for John McNutcase because The Chosen One lacks the both credentials and the experience to do the job.
OUTSOURCE THE PRESIDENCY! It's the best choice!

Post-Biden poll shows Obama-McCain dead heat!
We warned the super delegates during the primaries, Obama can't win because he is grossly under-qualified!
Democrat for McCain
Posted by: al | Aug 24, 2008 9:36:39 PM
The party and pundits just don't get it. Senator Obama will not receive the votes of Clinton Democrats because he is unqualified to be President. Experience matters especially for the job of President. Senator Clinton could be his running mate and we still wouldn't vote for him.
Since June 3rd, Senator Obama has made one gaffe after another. He has terrible judgment and cannot take a stand on anything. This is why he has two positions on every issue.
I am a Puma Pac member. Short of a miracle with Senator Clinton as the nominee, we will be voting for Senator McCain in November. Obama bought off the superdelegates to push him over the delegate finish line and he is spending money like mad. He spent over $6.5 million dollars in FL and he is still losing to McCain.
One more thing, we are fighting the corrupt DP leaders that gamed and frontloaded the primaries to select Obama. Pelosi and Dean are corrupt politicians.

The DNC has been most undemocratic. They have done all they could to shipwreck Hillary and select Obama. But that doeasn't mean I have to select Obama. I want a President with a clear record of putting America First. That's Hillary or McCain ! American Patriots will unite and won't let this country be sabatoged! PUMA's will put country first!

Female Clinton supporters who refuse to vote for Obama are doing nothing but reinforcing the stereotype that women are petty, emotional and vindictive. You would think that the Repubs did enough damage during the last 8 years that anyone, ANYONE, would do a better job than McCain. If McCain is really so independent, he should be an independent, like Lieberman. He's not - he's going to deliver more of the same.

I have been against the roll call when it was first reported. She shouldn't get a roll call. The woman couldn't even concede the night she lost the race.
No. Time for some come-up-ins

Obama will get a bump next week in the polls, but not what he needs in a supposed easy Dem win year. He should have been double digits ahead since Hillary dropped out and he's never done it. Biden won't do it for him either.
AMERICANS VOTE FOR THE TOP OF THE TICKET AND VOTE WITH THEIR GUT....MY GUT SAYS STAY AWAY FROM NOBAMA!

We own our votes! If you want to blindly follow Senator Obama to defeat, be my guest. We've looked into Obama's past. He raised $250 million dollars in the Democratic Primary. Only half of that money came from small Internet donors. The rest came from bundlers representing lobbyists, law firms, financial firms, and so on. Even Michelle's brother is a lobbyist for Obama.
Senator Obama sat on charitable boards such as the Woods foundation. He directed millions of dollars to groups including one called ACORN. They have been convicted of voter fraud and are part of Obama's GOTV drive in his past and current campaigns.
Obama also directed millions of taxpayer dollars to developers such as Rezko and others for public housing projects. These programs failed, Obama collected donations from these developers, and kept silent about the poor people in his district living in squalor.
Posted by: yoga82 | Aug 24, 2008 9:50:23 PM
The DNC owes it to the 18Million voters of Hillary Clinton to have their voices heard in a roll call vote. Obama must be running scared that he will not be nominated at the convention. Not having the roll call will never unite the party. Obama will never win the White House without Hillary's supporters and he has now alienated anyone of them that might have voted for him. Obama is very indecisive -a quality America doesn't need in a President. This is a moral outrage and should not be tolerated by the delegates of the DNC.
The Democrats are going to lose the election. A election that was handed to them on a silver platter.
Obama has now thrown his potential Presidency under the bus.

The last few days have taken us back to the days after the Primaries. I am surprise with all the attacks on Obama. Some saying he is incompetent, some on his race. Take it or leave it when Gramm said we are a country of whiners, he was referring to the Democrats. I must admit it, the Republican party speaks for itself, they are more intelligent, richer, smarter and better at running campaigns but DISASTERS at running the country but they always win. There are more Democrats than Republicans, yet the Republicans always win. They nominated a senile, unintelligent old man to come and run the country and he may just win. I cant imagine my grand-father taking decisions for me. I definitely have to start saving for the next four years because its going to be real HELL. Tell me how stupid can we be? We all admit the country is in a mess and someone comes in offering the same policies that we have had for the past eight years and tell us that the person who is definitely offering the better policy will be a disaster for the country and yet we still believe. If there is anyone drinking any Kool-aid, it is the DEMOCRATS. What a SHAME.

I do not see Mitt Romney supporters complaining,I do not see Huckabee supporters complaining, everyone of them is fully supporting their party. For loyalty and Discipline, give it to the Republicans. They will manipulate us, tell us that our guns will be taken away, we are too liberal because we are pro-choice and yet they turn around authorising Wars that waste innocent lives. Bill Clinton who no matter what remains my hero was criticised for the Monica Lewinsky scandal, forcing us to vote against Al-Gore and yet Mccain commits adultery, offers Cindy for a pageant, preaches blasphemy and call it a joke and yet our so-called Christains say nothing about it but look at Edward now, he is now an outcast. Tell me in the eyes of God who committed a greater sin? But because Mccain is a POW, he gets a pass. Mccain was at the fore-front amongst those championing the impeachment of Bill Clinton and yet was guilty of the same sin. But the Republicans will continue to manipulate us. We surely are the Kool-aid drinkers.

It makes no sense to me that someone who supported a pro-choice, let's work on getting universal health-care etc. senator (Clinton), could turn around and vote for anti-choice, let's bomb the rest of the world, I could give a damn about the middle-class senator (McCain). I just don't understandwhat good that accomplishes. 4 more years of crap because your candidate lost.

Libby,
Don't blame Hillary for what the PUMAs are doing. She's doing her part in supporting Obama. If Obama loses this election he has no one to blame but himself. The Hillary and Obama race was not the worst between two candidates as I see it, Reagan & Bush was the worst race in recent years, yet Reagan sucked it up and selected Bush to bring his party together, resulting in 12 years of republican rule, where they wrecked the country and it took Bill 8 years to clean it up.
For you morons who actually believe Obama can win this thing without Hillary supporters are just that, MORONS. Obama and Hillary alike need to reach out to these people and bring them into the fold. The DEM should have a double digit lead in the polls right now and that's a FACT!. So all you Obama & Hillary supporters SHUT UP, stop the trash talking and lets take the white house back.
When you go to bed tonight look into your kid eyes and ask yourself if you are doing the right thing for them when you vote this fall.
I am a die heart Hillary supporter, but I be dammed if I am going to through away my kids chance of a better future. Hillary can do more good with Obama as Prez than with McCain.

If there was no roll call it would be because Hillary asked for it.
The fact is she did the roll call because she wanted to stick up for her supporters who wanted it...
The problem is a small percentage of her supporters have kept up with comments like neil on here...who I think everyone is pretty sure is crazy.
but between PUMA and people like that she is now getting blamed for a few self-centered whack jobs...
and yes it is hurting her numbers...badly ...in NY for ehr senate seat...
because a group she can't control ...that is so emoitional and weird...
who said they were fighting for issues and people suddenly through peopel and issues under the bus for their own spiteful weirdness.
that is the problem...Hillary thought her supporters were angry but smart and good enough to put issues and the welfare of the people those issues effect ahead of themselves...
and she was right for the most part outside a few people that can't come down after a long primary.
sad... they will destroy their candidate before they get a grip on themselves.
and that is not spin.

If Barak Hussein Obama wins in November, it will be highly unlikely that Hillary will ever get the opportunity to run for president. However, if Obama loses, McCain will be 76 years old when he runs for re-election in 2012. Hillary will be a shoo in for the Democratic nomination in 2012. Therefore, vote for Obama if you want to make sure Hillary can never run for president. If you want to see a Hillary Clinton presidency, vote for McCain in November.

Great point, except that Hillary was supposed to be a shoo-in for the 2008 nomination. Some people are just tired of the Clintons and the baggage that they bring with them.

gotta say I wish this once I was right in front of you.
some of the things coming out of your mouth sound like a raving animal.

and neil if you notice you have driven all the other Hillary supporters to realize ...
"this guy is on our side?"
maybe we should take a look at what we are doing if this guy is on our side.

I thought Obama's supporters wanted to adhere to the process. This isn't "uncommon" to have a roll call or put a candidate into nomination...my goodness, it would be "uncommon" not to do so. Why are you all wanting to circumvent the process? Oh, well, I guess for the same reason Obama blocked a revote in FL/MI. Oh, I guess for the same reason caucus fraud was ignored. Win any way you can,...he couldn't block Hillary from having her name on the ballot as he did to opponents in the Il. State Senate race, but he uses any tactics at his disposal. What a weak guy....geeezzzz
If Obama supporters want their candidate to win in November....hmmmm.., you might try not using profanity and condescension towards Hillary and her supporters going forward. The vitriol you spew certainly isn't advantageous to your candidate. I recall during the primary the Obama supporters being the first and most vociferous when they proclaimed they would never vote for Hillary if she were the nominee. Do you remember????

kmb08 it's also the Hillary supporters doing the same thing so it goes both ways. Just take a look at Neils million posts.

I am one of those Clinton women who will not support Barack Obama. I like Biden okay, but it is difficult to do what I complained about the last eight years...vote for someone I have little faith in because of the party. Bush was elected twice that way and was not prepared to be President and I can't vote now simply because of party politics for someone who is not prepared for the position. (About the same time Obama said he thought the war was wrong, he also said he would not be running for President in 2008 because he would not have enough experience, but he forgets to mention that now). What will I do...still deciding whether to stay home (which I have never missed a single vote since 18) or do a write in on my ballot. But Obama will NOT get my vote. Hell, I may write in my State Senator...he has more experience than Obama and he is about as bright.

it is Hillary that doesn't want to look like she is dividing the party.
not because of her supporters in total...but a smaller sub group.
we could have had a roll call if all this blather and PUMA bologne hadn't kept going on.
Hillary is worried about her senate seat...and it would be a sin to lose her...but this small group of whackos has made it impossible for her to go forward

Well Kathy I sure hope you're doing ok in this economy but I'm sorry you don't care about the rest of us that are suffering. McCain just wants to continue the status quo, thinks the economy is improving. Tell that to my neighbor who just had her home foreclosed on.

as I read more posts it becomes more apparent that you are an even a bigger idiot then I originally thought. Are you sure you are not a bush supporter?

To vote for McCain is to further the American agenda. To vote for Obama is to support Chicago corruption, vote fraud, and racism.
When the Democrats put forward a candidate who supports America for Americans I will be glad to vote for him/her.

Libby,
Hillary knew there was a need for universal healthcare before it was "cool" to be for such transformational legislation. Rarely does such monumental change get done the first try by anyone!! However, she would be much more apt to see it through learning from past mistakes/successes.
Hillary couldn't have done everything she wanted to do as President, but she would have worked her heart out trying. She keeps her word, and yes, she really is a compassionate leader who wants to help people.
She played softball with Obama, never using some of the hardball tactics Penn wanted her to use. The Republicans will relish playing hardball with Obama. Hillary and her supporters warned the superd's not to lose this election for the dems again, but they annointed the most liberal Senator in the Senate to carry the torch. Please tell me the last time a far left liberal won the Presidency? You see, the electorate in the general election is a more conservative lot than what you'll find in the dem primary.
