Stephanopoulos: Obama VP Announcement Friday Night?

ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: As speculation swirls about when Sen. Barack Obama will announce his vice presidential candidate, the conventional wisdom has focused on Saturday because the campaign has planned a large campaign rally that day in Springfield, Illinois.

But what if the Obama campaign announces the vp  -- via campaign text and email blast to supporters -- on Friday when more people will be sitting at home, watching the Olympics?

Noting all signs point to Saturday, ABC News' Chief Washington Correspondent George Stephanopoulos said a Friday announcement might have political benefits too.

"Just about every indication that I have, Charlie, from people close to the process, is that they're going to try to hold this until Saturday," Stephanopoulos told ABC's Charlie Gibson on World News Thursday night. "To get the word out just a little bit before Barack Obama and the pick show up in Springfield, Illinois."

However, Stephanopoulos said the Obama campaign wants to make sure that all the people who signed up to get the message on their cell phones or blackberries are in a position to receive them -- for maximum impact.

"So it could come tomorrow night during the Olympics," Stephanopoulos said, noting that technology experts estimate high usage between 8pm and 10pm on weeknights.

On "Good Morning America" Friday morning, Stephanopoulos also mention two other possible high usage windows: lunch time Friday, or early Saturday morning.

New polls show Republican rival Sen. John McCain is moving ahead and tightening up the race, which could influence Obama's vp pick.

"If you listen to Barack Obama and the people around him, they certainly seem to be signaling that the choice will be someone who has instantly recognizable national security experience," Stephanopoulos said. "That means Joe Biden. Maybe Evan Bayh. Not Tim Kaine of Virginia. And maybe even the big surprise, you know, someone like Hillary Clinton or Al Gore."

I'm yawning from all this hype. Who cares? Who ever it is, I'm sure BO will flip flop and regret his decision at some point and wish he had picked Hillary.

Even when Obama chooses, if he doesn't go up in the polls, he will flip-flop and say that he reorganized his thinking and chose someone else.

Obama = empty suit, no substance!

Yawn.

He should pick anti-abortion to counter his extreme votes to allow a baby born alive in an abortion to be left for dead.

Kitty, you could be right, however, I think its probably Bill Ayers! I would say Larry Sinclair, but I think Kaine would get jealous since he and Obama are really "girly" together...hmmm.....see the way they tap each other on the butts....? Hmmmmmm.....!!!!

Kitty

Wright is in Obama's home state of Kenya on an all expense paid trip courtesy of Obama campaign.

The "Hillary ain't never been called a $igger" guy is Obama's new pick.

Obama should choose Al Gore as his running mate

Posted by: Kinkou | Aug 21, 2008 7:43:22 PM

It's either indecisiveness or secrecy, the first being hallmark of the first Bush, and the latter being hallmark of the second Bush.

Picking a VP based on polls...pathetic.

Posted by: Maximeliano | Aug 21, 2008 8:06:07 PM

Why would any well-known, experienced politician WANT to be Obama's VP "pick"? They have to KNOW they'd be the next person Obama throws under the bus -- and the person the Obamatrons BLAME when Obama loses.
