The Note: Clinton Drama Trails Obama to Hawaii
August 08, 2008 8:36 AM
ABC News' Rick Klein writes in Friday's Note: Five good reasons that Sen. Barack Obama is headed to his vacation without having named a running mate:
1. He’s not happy with his choices (and is there a better place to be Biden your time?)
2. He’s too happy with his choices (and is remembering his good-Bayh hug).
3. Isn’t afraid of competing with the modern pentathlon team competition (yes he Kaine.)
4. Doesn’t really want to enjoy Hawaii (briefing books make lousy beach Reed-ing).
5. Really does want to enjoy Hawaii (it’s better than leaving your veep to the lions in the lower 48 -- but what’s the matter with Kansas, again?)
One truly great reason he’s leaving town without having made an announcement:
He doesn’t want to make the call to Hillary (and God forbid Bill answers).
Read the rest of The Note -- and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day -- from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.
Obama starts his Hawaii vacation with a mystifyingly long list of questions unanswered about the convention that’s barely two weeks away. He has no running mate, no set speaking schedule, no real sense of what protests he’ll face -- and no party peace.
As Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton hits the trail for Obama Friday in Nevada -- her first solo campaign appearance for the candidate she’s endorsed -- it’s time (again) to try and answer the question she famously posed two months ago: What does Hillary want?
“Advisers to Sen. Barack Obama are scrambling to reach a compromise with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to appease her supporters and find roles for her and her husband,” Anne E. Kornblut writes in The Washington Post.
“The back and forth with Clinton -- as well as questions about whether her husband will actively campaign for Obama after the convention -- threatens to distract attention from what Obama's backers hope will be one of the convention's central themes: change,” Kornblut writes. “Planners are hoping to create an event that looks and feels different from past conventions, with more interactive components and an emphasis on the grass roots, in order to mirror the core message of Obama's candidacy.”
(How much of this is about logistics, and how much is about respect? In which area can Obama afford to be more magnanimous?)
Clinton backers got some platform language: “Demeaning portrayals of women cheapen our debates, dampen the dreams of our daughters, and deny us the contributions of too many.” And: “Our party is proud that we have put 18 million cracks in the highest glass ceiling.”
(Proud that 18 million people voted for someone who isn’t going to be the nominee?)

The media is making an issue out of a non-issue.

I don't think it matters one way or another who gets the job this Novemeber.
The American century is over and the country has been going downhill for the last 30 years.
We are now where the countries like Britan and France where at the start of the 20th century....just one war away from losing it all.....

Yesterday Obama told a young boy, "America is not what it once was, what it could be . . . I don't want that for my kids." Even as a Democrat, I can see that this is a statement that will haunt Obama in the last month of the campaign. I can almost write the Republican attack ads myself. Of course, Obama will explain it away . . . what he said wasn't exactly what he meant, it all came out wrong. And this is the man who said, "Words do matter." If words matter and Obama is so eloquent, why does he keep putting his foot in his mouth?

JB... Obama said:
"America is not what it once was, what it could be . . . I don't want that for my kids."
What do you mean? This ocuntry ISN"T what it used to be. We are the laughing stalk of the world. We have lost our dominence and our pride because of 8 years of Bush. I think he is totally right. Do you see factorys booming, people enjoying their lives instead of working two jobs just to exit, retiring and actually enjoying their "golden Year?" This is how it used to be!!!I remember my parents and grandparents...they are turning over in their graves at what has happened. You cannot handle the truth
Just pray that we can turn it around!!!

JB in St. Louis, I heard the One tell a schoolkid . .. America isn’t what it once was, what it could be. I’ve got news for you, Mr. Obama. America WAS great, IS great, and WILL BE great long after you and your unproud-of-America wife are a footnote in history. Do we need improvement? Yes. Do we need to fix a few things? Yes. But to tell, of all people, a little kid, that America isn’t what it once was ??? What on earth were you thinking? By the way, where is Billy today? I miss his delusional rants.

I don't believe the "America is not what it once was, what it could be . . . I don't want that for my kids." will come back to bite him. It's true. Look at the price of oil, the mortgage crisis, the amount of jobs lost in just the first half of this year, the unfair pay for women etc It's all there. Would you want your child living like this especially if she's a women. I don't think so.
A comment that can and most likely will be used against Obama is the "bitter" comment. He's going to win PA so I don't see much fuss on that issue.

Tiffany...WAKE UP...America is a mess...and we, as voters, are to blame. We re-elected Bush, and look where he put us. Are you blind? MG...people...this election is so important, and all everyone wants to do is degrade, fight, use fowl language, instead of the facts...get educated and make an educated choice in Nov..
Posted by: thoughtful | Aug 8, 2008 9:29:53 AM
JB in St. Louis – I’m glad you brought up the comments Obama made about America not being what it once was or could be. He was speaking off the cuff, and of course, put his foot in this mouth. Why can’t this guy speak without a teleprompter? At any rate, I don’t see much about this comment on the MSM. Can you imagine what would happen if McCain said America is no longer what it once was? It would be all over the front page of every major newspaper in the country, and the lead story on the evening news. This is exactly the kind of double standard that sends people to Fox News and talk radio.

Newvoter, you need to do more than pray. Learning how to spell and use grammer correctly are the fundamentals of communication. You are right, there are too many uneducated slobs that think they know enough to make a difference, dragging everyone down with them.
The answers are: education, discipline, personal accountability, and commitment to improving life for everyone... qualities too many Americans now lack because of our culture (or absence thereof).
Good luck with that.

Obama is a big threat to the United States!

I'm a "Reagan" Democrat voting Obama. It's feel like a flashback of 1980. They tried to paint Reagan as an inexperience candidate; just another "actor". People weren't sure whether they could trust him. After the first debate against Carter, Reagan got the bump.
I believe this is what will eventually happen to Sen.Obama. After the first debate the choice will be clear; Obama08.

I totally agree with you. Obama has stated time and again how words do matter. I don't think he responded well to this young child. Michelle was also told by a youngster yesterday that we should stay in Iraq until the war was over.....she didn't have a response.

Obama running on scare tactics. Like Obama tried to scare everybody saying the surge would do more damage than good.
Obama is like the little boy that stands in the corner that says "SEE I TOLD YOU SO"

It's been proven Obama gets much more negative media...
IT'S THE TRUTH!!!!

Jane - that's been a line he's delivering for months. And its a line that many people agree with.
Granted, I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't think that line will hurt him.
Besides, McCain doesn't need real things over which to attack Obama. McCain just attacks Obama over his own lies about Obama.
They're actually again airing an ad about how Obama voted to raise taxes on the lower middle class, despite the first ad being ridiculed by media fact checkers. Unbelievable - the McCain camp enjoyed benefit of doubt, and they've given it away.
Posted by: Paul | Aug 8, 2008 10:36:00 AM
She lost to a rookie. And the DNC, more than 50% of the democrats, and all of the republicans do not like the creepy Clintons - is that 3/4 of America. The puma crew are mental and refuse to take in any of what has happened.
Posted by: disambiguates | Aug 8, 2008 10:38:26 AM
Was torn between Obama and McCain for a long time now, however, I've made my mind up to vote for McCain. Reason, Obama was DEAD set against counting Florida and Michigan in the primaries, because he would have lost the nomination. Now, after the DNC gave Florida and Michigan 1/2 votes, Obama supported that, because he knew Hillary would not get enough delegates to clinch the nomination. Now, after all this, Obama wants to give FULL votes to Florida and Michigan. This is pandering to its fullest, arrogance, conceitedness, etc. Obama supporters, if you can't see this, you are definitely BLIND to the tactics of Obama. I hope Hillary puts her name in the roll call, I hope she walks away with the nomination. Obama is a liar, cheater, and self-absorbed monster in this race. If not, Hillary, then I'll vote for McCain! I challenge America to do so as well....keep Obama out of the White House!
Posted by: Kimble | Aug 8, 2008 10:43:40 AM
Kimble: good reasons not to vote for Obama, I wouldn't vote for the person who follows the rules of the game either. Cheaters never win! Hillary example one.

Sean: How can we call the war a win when we lied to create it??
Posted by: beck | Aug 8, 2008 10:48:47 AM
beck - I'm still waiting for an answer to that years old question - what does it mean to win in Iraq?
Now that the Iraqi government is set to tell us to get out, is that a win or a loss?
Posted by: Paul | Aug 8, 2008 10:50:51 AM
At this point I rather McCain win this year if he doesn't pick Ms Clinton as VP.
That way Hillary can RUN again in 2012 AND WIN EVERYTHING for 8 years.
Pick HILLARY AS VP or LOSE MY VOTE.
Posted by: Fenril | Aug 8, 2008 11:01:35 AM
Sean: On the news a few nights ago they showed a document that warned Bush about 9/11. Almost to detail what would happen, just now when... he received it 3 weeks before 9/11. Now you tell me what makes you think I would ever in life but a Repub in the White House.
Posted by: beck | Aug 8, 2008 11:10:02 AM
"Now you tell me what makes you think I would ever in life but a Repub in the White House."
huh..which side are you on? Repubs or Demo? You confused me since the start.
Posted by: Sean | Aug 8, 2008 11:28:10 AM
Who here really believes the McCain of 2000 would support the McCain of 2008?
Posted by: Paul | Aug 8, 2008 11:44:15 AM
Latest McCain gaffe:
Responding to violence between Russia and Georgia, McCain pompously said that Russia must pullback immediately, because, get this... they violated an international border and invaded a sovereign nation.
Hmmm. I wonder if McCain supports a timetable for Russian withdrawal?
Posted by: Paul | Aug 8, 2008 12:00:36 PM
Sean - feel free.
Posted by: Paul | Aug 8, 2008 12:00:55 PM
Obama can't win this election without Hillary on the VP ticket and he knows it. Probably why he took off for Hawaii for a week....my guess is the DNC all know who the VP is right now and maybe that's why Hillary has to suck it up and go out on the trail in Las Vegas for BO today. I love Hillary but I still can't vote Obama if she is on the ticket. McCAIN '08/HILLARY '12
Posted by: Debra | Aug 8, 2008 7:09:32 PM
I wouldn't even vote Obama for a ticket!Obama didn't earn anything he stole from Hillary. The democratic party planned this.I wouldn't put it pass Obama in setting John Edward's up in the call and getting John Edwards to take the bait-and bam pictures. Why?Obama wants his delegates.
I would never throw my voye away!
My vote goes for Hillary or McCain.
There is nothing with useing Hillary to get my vote.We all know that
Hillary has to do what she has to do.If you know Hillary in all her messages there is a message for all her 18 + suppoerters."HANG ON" And if no Denver nominnee and ballot- I am voteing McCain there is nothing anyone can say or do to chamge my mind-Obama is un-fit-His bad judgements -his flip flops -his lies.and his fake birth certificate-His cheating-steling ewwwwwwwww,He makes me sick and I am not giving him a free pass to destory our country!
