The Note: McCain Gaffe is Obama Gift
August 22, 2008 8:36 AM
ABC News' Rick Klein reports in Friday's Note: An entirely fictitious memo that will be read some time before Sen. Barack Obama arrives in Springfield, Ill., on Saturday:
To: Number Two
From: Barack Obama
Congratulations. You have agreed to be part of a historic campaign to save the country from more of the same with a vision to take us to a better place, via a new course for America. Enclosed you will find your poncho for Thursday night.
Yes. We. Can. To make sure that we do, I thought I might provide a few pointers:
New kinds of leaders provide new kinds of leadership. Think of that before you hit the stump.
Remember how many houses you have. Also remember how many houses John McCain has.
Pay attention to how few leaks sprung while your name and a few others were in the mix. Before you decide to leak something, call or Berry me -- or get in touch with David Plouffe, and he can tell you why it’s a bad idea.
Once a week, John Kerry will call. Be polite.
Twice a week, Howard Dean will call. Let it go to voicemail.
Every day, Rahm Emanuel will call. Write down everything he says.
You will be asked about Hillary Clinton. Smile -- but you’re on your own on this one.
PS: You will not influence me by trying to influence Michelle.
Read the rest of The Note -- and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day -- from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.
Obama’s running mate arrives -- soon (promise! with only a full week wasted on silly speculation!) -- to a lovely big gift from McCain.
Forgetting how many houses you have is a maybe-three-times-an-election-cycle gaffe that breaks through and has a life of its own. (Yes, that WAS Mike Allen’s voice on the morning shows Friday . . . )
It provides a handy new storyline for a campaign that needed one -- perfect defense for the elitism charge, and also a line that buttresses the charge that McCain is out of touch on the economy.

John McCain graduated 894th in a class of 899 at the Naval Academy at Annapolis. His father and grandfather were four star admirals in the Navy. Some have suggested that might have played a role in McCain being admitted. His academic record was awful. And it shows over and over again whenever McCain is called upon to think on his feet.
The media -- many of them card-carrying members of the John McCain Protection Society -- continue to paper over each new crack in the McCain-as-foreign-policy-authority myth: they love McCain, or at least the McCain they've created in their minds, and they're uncomfortable and embarrassed when the real McCain shows that he no longer has much to do with the character they've created.
John McCain is as intellectually shallow as our current president. When asked what his Christian faith means to him, his answer was a one-liner. "It means I'm saved and forgiven." Great scholars have wrestled with the meaning of faith for centuries. McCain then retold a story we've all heard a hundred times about a guard in Vietnam drawing a cross in the sand.
McCain was asked to define rich. After trying to dodge the question -- his wife is worth a reported $100 million -- he finally said he thought an income of $5 million was rich.
One after another, McCain's answers were shallow, simplistic, and trite. He showed the same intellectual curiosity that George Bush has -- virtually none.

I don't care how many houses John McCain owns. What impresses me about John McCain is that he says what he means,and he means what he says. I trust him. I believe he has what it takes to run the country and stand up to terrorists. I do not have the same confidence in my own party's candidate. I am not interested in occasional small gaffes. I don't care if McCain has an occastional "senior moment." When John McCain said he would rather lose an election than lose a war, I absolutely believe he meant it. I honor John McCain, his service to his country, and his habit of saying what he believes, no matter what it costs him. As a Democrat, I don't always agree with his policies, but I admire him as a human being. I'm proud to vote for him - my very first time voting for a Republican. Carrie , MO

That's why in the face of the guy who is so financially unstressed with the present economy he can't remember how many homes, gardeners and staffs he has...
he will hopefully pick the guy who was hauling his own stumps to the dump

America's number one mission right now should be doing anything to keep Obama out of the White House. Remember country first!! Since the DNC selected Obama over Hillary that left us only one choice, to vote for McCain. To not vote at all is essentially giving a vote to Obama. To vote third party is also irresponsible. Anything to keep Obama out. McCain 2008 Hillary 2012

and by the way
Charles Keating went to jail too...
but in that case it was because the guy hanging out with mccain alll the time...
had devastated the country with his crimes on the backs of the working class.
the same guy mcCain had martinis with at his wife's home(s) introducing him to other senators

stresscrete,
It is a gaffe because McCain did not have a ready answer. The press has been easy on McCain during this campaign because of familiarity and, I think, the assumption that Americans already know John McCain. I also think they treat him with kid gloves because of his war history. The fact is, I don't Americans do know who John McCain really is....And when they do he will need to do better than fumbling for answers on how many house he owns. Talk all you want about the media "love affair" with Obama but the truth is the media is in love with both candidates right now..

Posted by Another Dem for McCain: “To not vote at all is essentially giving a vote to Obama.” As a Democrat, I agree with that. My first instinct was to simply not cast a vote for President, or vote for Nader. I am now on board with voting for McCain, and voting for Democrats down-ticket (except for Claire McCaskill, Senator from my own state). In doing so, I will be taking one reliable vote away from the Democrats, and giving McCain a vote the Republicans don’t usually get. I’ve convinced several of my friends who had planned on voting Nader as a protest vote to do the same. We are all committed to helping elect John McCain, but above all, stopping the radical Obama. I am cheered by the number of my mother’s older women friends, all Democrats, who are voting for a Republican for the very first time. These women don’t protest, blog, carry sign, attend rallies or anything like that, but they sure do vote. And they’re voting against their own party. I don’t care what the polls say or the Obama press has to say: I see a McCain victory in the making.

Please how can you admire such a flip flopper like McCain. He's nothing like the McCain of 2000. He had to reinvent himself to become the nominee this time. He will do and say anything to get elected. It was taken away by Bush and he's not going to let it be taken away this time.

How can you hold it against someone that they have more than you? That's not the issue here. The REAL issue is that Obama bought his house and lot with the help of convicted felon Tony Rezko. Obama knew tony was a criminal and still he used his "judgment to lead" and went ahead and entered into a serious financial deal with Rezko. We all know rezko got millions funneled to him from Obama.
Posted by: John | Aug 22, 2008 10:20:12 AM
Why is Rezko an issue. What is Obama guilty of. Was Obama on trial. What exactly is he guilty of. If you're going to say "poor judgement" then you can say the same thing about McCain and the Keating 5.
Posted by: d | Aug 22, 2008 10:24:35 AM
Once again the media attempts to breathe life into Obama's dying campaign. Their narrative of a game changing gaffe is absurd and wrong. Obama the fool left himself open for a Rezko smackdown. The property is owned by McCain's wife and her family. Out of touch Obama and his fawning media.

I cannot wait for the debates between John McCain and Barack Obama. McCain says what he thinks. Obama says what he thinks people want to hear. John McCain changes his mind on an issue when circumstances change. Barack Obama changes his mind when he thinks it will benefit him politically. John McCain and his wife own seven houses, all of which were legally paid for. Barack Obama owns one house, and bought it with the help of a sleazy crook on his way to prison. John McCain served the country. Barack Obama whines and criticizes his own country. John McCain is married to a woman who respects her own country. Barack Obama is married to a woman who thinks Americans can fix their broken souls by voting for her husband. John McCain is a man who has sense enough to realize there is a time and a place to criticize conditions in your own country. Barack Obama is a man who tells a 7 year old that America is not what it was, not what it could be. John McCain attends a church that respects all people. Barack Obama attends a church where the minister condemns white people, Italians, Jews, and the United States of America. John McCain has been conscious for the past twenty years. Barack Obama has either been in a coma, or on another planet, since he sat in a church for 20 years and had absolutely idea no idea what his minister was preaching or his fellow parishoners were cheering. For this moderate Democrat the choice is simple: John McCain, war hero, patriot, fine American.

John McCain: I remember the event clearly. I was asked about how many houses I owned and refused to answer.
Then one journalist came up and silently stood beside me. With the heel of his sandal, he scratched a seven in the dirt. We just stared at it for a moment, worshipping wealth together. Then he scratched it out, replacing it with an eight.
It was a moment I'll never forget.
My friends, it was at that moment I knew I had the strength to remove Excalibur from the stone, and saved King Arthur's kingdom from the old Russian empire.

Gaffe?
Rev Wright, Father Plegar,
William Ayers, James Johnson, Chris Dodd
and the media covered up Countrywide
Mortgage Scandal, Obama lying about the
Illinois Bill to protect children born
from botched abortions(Obama said it was
different from the Federal Bill which he would have supported, it was the same)!
Poor Judgement on "the surge" in Iraq!
Poor Judgement in his 20 year associations with those mentioned above!
Poor Judgement in not supporting
off-shore drilling to help ease our
energy crisis(he later flipped on this
one)!
Poor Judgement by picking on how many
houses John McCain owns!
Did Obama or his media lackies ask
John Kerry how many houses he owned
in 2004? How about Ted Kennedy?
Nancy Pelosi? Harry Reid?
Poor Judgement in proposing an Economic
disaster plan which includes bailouts for irresponsible homeowners who took out mortgages they knew they couldn't
afford, $1000 payment to everyone to make for his lack of a viable energy
policy, and last but not least,
Universal Healthcare!
Just Say No to Obama! No You Can't!

reaganfan, I see you learned to spell Reagan's name.
Yes, these lists of things that show no one is qualified to be president...
Keating, Arizona organized crime, Hagee, campaign finance reform that doesn't, poor judgment on Iraq, giving away national secrets on David Letterman, ignorance of events on the ground in Iraq, trying to start a war with Russia... and on and on.
Think what today's Republicans could say about George Washington.
He's an arrogant and aloof guy, who acts like the king he claims he doesn't want to be;
an average at best general who lost nearly every battle he fought and who had to be saved by French forces;
self-interest reigns supreme, to the point of where he manipulated the political scene for the sake of building a capital city on a swamp that has no benefit to anyone except being close to Washington's own home;
showed poor judgment devoting national resources to a canal project that would be obsolete the day it opened for business;
showed poor judgment in not recognizing a future south/north split but instead worried about the west seceding from the east;
a very average, do nothing president except for his use of exceptional force to crush a "rebellion" of a handful of Pennsylvania whiskey distillers;
married into money and squandered much of his wife's fortune on western land speculation

John McCain, former POW and war hero, happens to be a war hero who was held prisoner by the North Vietnamese for over 5 years.
McCain was a POW. He doesn’t like talking about it

ABC and the rest of the Main Stream Media make the so called "gaffe" from McCain on the number of houses he owns front page news. Yet when it comes to Obama's ties to the convicted felon Rezco and the sweet heart house deal Rezco helped Obama with, there is hardly a peep. Newsbusters documents this on their site.
