Thought Congress had Adjourned? GOP Lawmakers to Return for Energy Debate

Share

August 03, 2008 8:52 PM

ABC News' Viviana Hurtado Reports: House Republicans tell ABC News that at least 30 members of Congress, emboldened by Barack Obama's "shift" on off shore drilling, are flying back to DC from their Districts today and tomorrow to attend a special debate on energy policy. This "session" is scheduled for Monday, August 4th beginning at 10 am ET. As expected, no Democrats will participate.

One House Republican says, "I'm a 25 year veteran of the U.S. Congress, and I've never seen anything like this."

GOP members say they would not be holding this debate tomorrow, if the Democratic nominee had not modified his position on off shore drilling.

They believe that with Obama and his Republican opponent John McCain, appearing to be in "agreement" about off shore drilling, then Speaker Nancy Pelosi should recall the Congress from recess, and put an energy bill on the floor in August.

They are expected to meet in the Old House Chamber where Lincoln worked.

If you didn't get your fill of Congressional drama after Friday's booing of the Democratic leadership when Congress adjourned, there's a second chance tomorrow.

The Olympics are coming and no one is paying attention.

When Congress returns in September, I am sure a plan will be worked out where there is an energy plan that can be worked out that will be bipartisan.

I find it interesting that the liberal left seem mute on Obama's change in positions over off shore drilling.

Have the enviromentalist all just suddenly decided this is good or is the media simply not covering their opposition to Obama's new policy?

Pandering to folks who only read headlines. Senator Obama stated he might agree to off-shore drilling as part of a COMPROMISE. So what are they willing to budge on in return for him compromising his opposition to an economically risky resumption of offshore drilling. Economically risky since the "lowering of gas prices" is agreed to both be very small and many year out, while the economic hazards of a spill are well proven. Also politically risky for Obama since it will incite his left wing - he does not have a cult of personality who supports his every word, when he wanders off the left's line (see FISA) he gets pilloried.

Or are the Republicans just planning to take his offer of compromise and arrogantly refuse to budge an inch on such issues as funding alternative energy research, protecting ANWR (for the elk or when our kids *really* need oil - take your pick), CAFE, fair royalty agreements with oil companies, etc.

"If we've got a plan on the table that I think meets the goals that America has to set and there are some things in there that I don't like, then obviously that's something that I would consider because that's the nature of how we govern in a democracy." Senator Obama

Heather:"I find it interesting that the liberal left seem mute on Obama's change in positions over off shore drilling."

Many of the "liberal left" read beyond the headlines and don't have a problem with his position yet. If offshore drilling 'buys' protection of ANWR and a Mahattan Project scale alternative energy push, bring on the rigs.

But thats the sort of adult "nuanced" shades of gray problem-solving the Republican Right can't even comprehend.

Thanks Nancy Pelosi... Thanks for NOTHING!!! Go Cindy, now if we could only get Arnold to be, ahem... "recalled."

I am so sick of the do nothing democrats and republicans. Neither party deserves our vote, I am voting for Nader/Gonzalez.

To encourage the Republicans, remember the stand of Democrat Senator Jim Webb. Sen. Jim Webb, D-Virginia, opened and then immediately gaveled the
Senate session to a close. He spent 57 seconds in the chamber.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, announced December 19 that he would keep the Senate open with a series of "pro forma" sessions through mid-January. This was done to stop the President of the United States, George W Bush, from making any recess appointments.

Heather,

The vast majority of the liberal left agree with Obama. He is willing to compromise on a bipartisan energy bill to get things done in Washington which would include some limited off-shore drilling.

Interesting that the day after Obama praises the Gang of 10 in the Senate who are working on a comprehensive energy bill, McCain follows Obama's lead.

What, is Exxon holding a special succession of congress? That's the only time the republicans pay attention.

The dedication shown by the House Republicans to the oil lobbyists is remarkable. I mean what's in it for them?
Oh, campaign donations.
Well I'm sure they would do the same thing for,say..the victims of Katrina.

Isn't it amazing that McBush people think he shows "courage" when he says he will compromise, but when Obama says that, he's just pandering to people. McBush=hypocrite, Republican=hypocrite.

Drill the phony's behind!

He needs a comprehensive nuclear energy strategy, putting 1 trillion dollars, all his proposed spending on other things, into nuclear energy technology.

Solve the oil-dependence energy problem once for all.

This phony's inflating-your-tire policy is as much thin are as he airs.

I boo the Republicans who are so narcisstic as to believe they can get drilling rights el pronto by reconvening. They are so narcisstic they are creating a side show. I'm not laughing, but they are really living in another demension. To have that many representative living in a delusion is scary!

--jhw539--You evidently don't know what you are talking about in ANWAR. There are certainly no ELK there unless you don't know the difference between an ELK and as POLAR BEAR. Study bit about the area, ok.

What about leases the oil companies already hold, and apparently aren't tapping? Do they really need new leases right now, or is this just the equivalent of a land grab? Interesting that it seems to follow a series of industry commercials on further exploiting domestic resources.

Why are certain politicians suggesting new leases are such an urgent issue when it could take a decade to bring new supplies online, and make a modest dent in worldwide demand? After all, petroleum is sold in a GLOBAL marketplace (there's no strictly domestic market), in which American EXPORTS have actually increased while people complain about prices.

As a famous oil man recently noted, we can't drill our way out of this situation. America consumes too much fuel (~388,000,000 gallons daily of gasoline alone), and too little comes from alternative sources.

The market forces will do more for us than these overpaid clowns. I could go for 5 weeks of vacation.

The GOP figures it needs to do something after all their scandals and the complete disaster of the last 8 years. I still think they are all pretty much useless. Better if they make that vacation twice as long. Most of the laws they are making nowadays are an affront to our liberties anyways.
