As Ike Bears Down on Texas, Obama Bears Down on McCain

Share

September 13, 2008 11:49 AM

ABC News' John Berman, Sunlen Miller, and Ursula Fahy report:

At the top of a rally in front of 8 thousand supporters in Manchester, NH, Barack Obama made a brief nod to those bearing the brunt of Hurricane Ike.  "We are enjoying a beautiful day in New Hampshire," he told the crowd, "But it is appropriate for us to begin by thinking about those families that are having their lives upended as a consequence of hurricane Ike in the Gulf...I think it's important for us to make sure we are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers today."

Senator Obama went on to say his supporters should be willing to help those in need.

But Obama then transitioned to a political stump speech using the weather-inspired segue, "a lot of people are going through their own trials and tribulations, there are a lot of quiet storms taking place across America."

Obama continued what is a new campaign effort to sharpen attacks on John McCain, saying, "he is out of touch with the American people."  Obama said the McCain team is trying to divert focus from the economic difficulties facing Americans

"They don't want to debate on  the issues," he said. "They are running on 8 more years of what we have seen."

Obama also made reference to some of  the media-frenzies of the past weeks and months.

"They are going to spend the next  7-8 weeks trying to distract you, they're going to talk about pigs, they're going to talk about lipstick, and they're going to talk about Paris Hilton, and they're going to talk about Brittney Spears."  But he promised, "I believe we will not be distracted this time, we will not be diverted."

At the very moment that Obama was promising to keep the focus on the issues, his campaign announced the release of a new campaign ad attacking John McCain's ties to lobbyists. "His campaign manager lobbies for corporations outsourcing American jobs," the ad says, "the campaign chairman he picked last year…a bank lobbyist." The campaign says the ad will air nationally on cable and in "key" states.

The tenor from the Obama campaign in the wake of Hurricane Ike was vastly different than their tone when Gustav hit less than 2 weeks ago.  Then, Obama delivered short speeches at giant rallies largely devoid of politics.  But now, with his standing in the polls having slipped, perhaps he cannot afford to be so charitable.

The depth to which McCain's campaign has fallen is breathtaking, even more disgusting than Bush's '00 and '04 campaigns. And to think John McCain once wore his honor on his sleeve, like a badge of courage. No more.

Obama scales back campaign events in Ike's wake from The Associated Press - 20 minutes ago.

This is for everyone affected by Ike. Hang in there ...

I'm sure Sarah 'the celebrity' is busy raising money for the victims of this storm. Perhaps she'll call her friend Paris for money raising advice.

Or, Ms. Palin is busy looking up the meaning of hubris in the dictionary.

Love you Hillary.
From this day forward, you are the only democrat I will EVER vote for.
This party shamed us all with its favoritism and it ugly attacks on you.
We will not give in.
Greetings, John McCain. I can survive 4 more years.
Dems…. learn from this. NO unity by cheating, hating, attacking, denigrating and corruption.

Angie, Yes it is a sad thing for America, and the world if Mcsame is elected. He isnt the only liar on the ticket either. Sarah has lied to us, and this is disturbing, considering we are depending upon her to be truthful to us to prove her worth. I just think I can trust the democrats more this time, the republicans are up to dirt..

Posted by: Jo | Sep 13, 2008 12:28:57 PM

Now it seems that Sarah did know that the little village she ran was charging for rape kits when she was Mayor. She approved the idea.

How many more lies is the woman going to tell? I suspect after Fox News she won't give another interview.

Thank G-d you've awoken and "seen the light!" It's time to stand up to McCain for what he is: a hypocrite and far from being a straight-shooter with the American people. Stay focused on the issues and you and Biden will, most assuredly, win this election on November 4th! Howard Gallas, Reno, NV.

McCain/Palin: What a catastrophic combination! We have to rally around the smart, decent, accomplished, caring, honest Barack Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden. We MUST stand up to these others that are hell bent on ruining this country! I sure hope we pull this off now ... it would truly be tragic if we were derailed in any way!

Posted by: Lila Mach | Sep 13, 2008 12:32:50 PM

I'm Glad Obama is attacking McCain on the fact that hes has a bunch of lobbyist and Bush workers running his campaign.

Not sure if anybody noticed how much McCain and Palin have been getting called liars to their faces lately. Their ads are full of lies people can easily debunk by spending 20 minutes on a computer.

Long live the control free internet.

It's too bad that Obama didn't bear down on Jeremiah Wright when he spat out anti-America and anti-white venom prior to Obama running for president.

Of course, Obama's actions speak louder than his words.

The reason Obama didn't is because he secretly agrees with Jeremiah Wright.

How is questioning McCain's ties to lobbyists a non-issue. I am so sick of the spineless media in this country. Why are they so afraid of the right? rednecks really. So what if Michelle Obama didn't go to the 9/11 memorial? So now she's not Christian and American? How narrow-minded a view is that? If you want more superficial ideological leadership then lets vote Palin/McCain and watch the country lose its economic and political standing in the world. McCain Flies His Campaign Past Obama

Saturday, September 13, 2008

John McCain was trained as a fighter pilot. In his selection of Sarah Palin, and in his convention and campaigning since, he has shown that he learned an important lesson from his fighter pilot days: He has gotten inside Barack Obama's OODA loop.

That term was the invention of the great fighter pilot and military strategist John Boyd. It's an acronym for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.

"The key to victory is operating at a faster tempo than the enemy," Boyd's biographer Robert Coram writes. "The key thing to understand about Boyd's version is not the mechanical cycle itself, but rather the need to execute the cycle in such a fashion as to get inside the mind and decision cycle of the adversary."

For a fighter pilot, that means honing in above and behind the adversary so you can shoot him out of the sky. For a political candidate, it means acting in such a way that the opponent's responses again and again reinforce the points you are trying to make and undermine his own position.

In this article you say "At the very moment that Obama was promising to keep the focus on the issues, his campaign announced the release of a new campaign ad attacking John McCain's ties to lobbyists."

Are you implying that this is not an issue? This is a very important issue. The fact that 7 of McCain's top advisors are lobbyists is at the heart of the argument that his plan for the future is driven by the very people he claims he will drive out of Washington.

This is hipocracy of the greatest degree! Mr. McCain has no honor.

Barack Obama,
Please talk more about issues of concern to women. Talk about Lilly Ledbetter and how McCain supported the filibuster of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

Talk about McCain's plan to allow all health insurance companies to be regulated by a the state with the lowest consumer protections.

Talk about what happens to someone who gets a serious illness like cancer, or who has a family member who has a serious illness, when they don't have insurance. It is indecent.

And talk about what is happening to middle class wages in this country. Middle class wages went up during the Clinton years and went down during the Bush years. Let us choose the economic policies that brought an increase in wages in this country!

Posted by: tim | Sep 13, 2008 1:15:38 PM

What's interesting is...both the MSM and cable channels are still operating in the "Old Ages" when it comes to polls and results. Unfortunately, however, making pronouncements of "slippage" or "being behind" become part of the storymaking, which is about "perception," which can impact results.
So here's a new one: Folks, it's not about polls, it's about VOTES and the ELECTORAL COLLEGE. And guess what? The Obama campaign is miles ahead when it comes to voter registration and tracking new voters. And an FYI: New registrants aren't ever included in these polls.
Additionally, national poll averages going up or down have little to do with garnering electoral college votes. So, for example, if a preference "surge" is recorded for a candidate, but the bulk of that surge is from a particular geographic area that was already in the tank for that candidate, it doesn't matter one bit, though it might look like a substantial shift when presented in traditional, i.e., "Old Ages" poll results terms.
Finally, these polls are not guaranteed to reflect TODAY'S registered voters and the breakdown of what % are Repubs and what % are Dems or Indies.
Bottom line: These much behind-the-time polls keep the excitement going, the interest going...which makes for nice revenues for the media. But accurate? Or relevant?
Just wait until November 4.

ObamasNemisis,

In presenting all these facts to us about poll numbers you prove yourself worthier of the presidency than your esteemed leader: he wouldn't know a fact if it came up and kicked him in the a_s_s.

tim | Sep 13, 2008 1:14:20 PM,

You are kidding right? McPalin mentions his fighter pilot/POW days every time he opens his mouth.

And what's with the decision to have him go everywhere with Palin at his side now? Was this decision made because of the fact that on his own he can't draw a crowd large enough to fill a park bench?

During the Palin rallies, he looks like a proud grandfather waiting to be introduced by his granddaughter. He stands next to, and slightly behind here grinning like an idiot, and basking in the reflected addoration the crowd of republicans is spewing upon Ms Palin.

McCain has no honor.

I can't believe McCain is close to Obama..even close. Americans are just gluttons for abuse. It's the agenda for me, and the republicans have NONE..especially in the health care. I would never again serve in the military..to defend
