Biden Defends Comment That, for the Wealthy, 'It's Time to Be patriotic'
September 18, 2008 7:31 PM
ABC News' Matthew Jaffe reports: At a Thursday rally in an Akron union hall, Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden defended his contention that it is time for wealthy Americans to be patriotic and pay more taxes.
Biden was asked by ABC News' Kate Snow in an interview aired Thursday morning on "Good Morning America" if people earning more than $250,000 a year would have to pay more taxes under an Obama-Biden administration.
"You got it," Biden replied. "It's time to be patriotic, Kate. Time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help America out of the rut, and the way to do that is they're still gonna pay less taxes than they did under Reagan."
With the John McCain campaign hitting out at the remark, Biden felt compelled to defend his comment in front of the labor audience in Ohio.
"Catholic social doctrine as I was taught it is, you take care of people who need the help the most," Biden said in Akron. "Now it'd be different if you could make the case to me that by giving this tax cut to the very wealthy, everybody else was going to be better off. We saw what happened the last eight years when we gave that tax cut. Tell me how everybody is better off. And the point I want to make to you is, and I mean this sincerely - wealthy people are just as patriotic, patriotic as poor people. We just have not asked anything of them.”
“John McCain's making fun of the fact that I said paying taxes is patriotic," he continued. "What I said was when a woman asked me, what do I tell people making over $250,000 a year that their taxes are going to go back to where they were with Reagan, which is a lot lower - lower than they were at Reagan, what do I tell them? I said tell them it's time to be patriotic.”
Biden, who said there's "no disagreement" between Barack Obama and McCain on tax cuts, but rather "the debate is who gets the tax cuts," advised Democratic supporters how to convert Republicans.
“Next time your Republican friends say to you, 'This is going to be different,' or 'I don't like Obama's tax policy going to the middle class,' or whatever they say, say 'You're right, last eight years worked pretty well, didn't they? How do you feel, small businessman, about the last eight years? How do you feel, white collar worker, about the last eight years?'"

Hey Joe,
What about all those taxpayers who after deductions, credits and the EIC pay ZERO taxes?
Are they patriots?
And how will Obama's tax cuts help them? Last time I checked 0 x 0 = Zero. Or are you using that Democrat math?
obamayomama: I have been making the point that when the Bush tax cuts expire everyone's taxes will go up if Congress does not intervene. Sadly, no one wants to face facts. Glad you get it.
Now, those who don't want to face facts, just what is the likelihood if, when the Bush tax cuts expire, Dems hold the majority in Congress--what do you REALLY think is the likelihood of tax cuts for anyone? From my experience, the Dems never saw a tax they didn't think was too high.
Oh, sorry you think President Obamessiah will take care of it? Time to read your Constitution boys and girls--tax bills start with Congress not the President. He only gets to sign it if and when it shows up on his desk.

yeah jim,good work there.
i agree with your interpretation of the resulting (likely erstwhile) conclusions most readers would glean from such twisted and tortured numbers.
i also agree that most republican crafted "tax cuts" are ALWAYS going to benefit the richest mostly and firstly.... that goes without saying .

This is not a winning strategy for the Dems to tie paying taxes to patriotism. As another poster pointed out, some people don't pay any taxes. Are they unpatriotic? When I see someone decked out buying groceries with an EBT card, it makes my blood boil. This is not a winning strategy.

Obama, Clinton, Kennedys, Edwards all millionaires & democrats, but I guess in liberal land, you turn a blind eye to those millionaires since they are democrats and elect them anyway. They're laughing all the way to the bank with your vote people. Get a clue and turn the channel.

Why do you people keep saying the rich got the tax cuts under Bush?? My husband and I are retired. Under Clinton in the 90's (due to the highest tax raise ever by any President (1992)when we were working, we never got a refund back. We paid through the nose. We retired in 2000 when Bush was elected, and due to his tax cuts, we get a refund back every year. He rolled back the tax tables and upped the standard deductible and dependent deductible. He has also given two tax rebates back to the people. My daughter and her husband make exactly $250,000 together and their taxes are unbelievable. They couldn't even deduct for their two children because they made too much money. So I'm sick and tired of hearing about all these tax cuts Bush did for the rich. My husband and I both have a small pension from our company (which is taxed) and our Social Security payments (which we earned, having paid into it for 35 years), so we are definitely not one of the rich!! If Obama gets elected, I worry because no Democrat has ever lowered taxes for anybody!! And why do all the movie starts hate Bush if he gives them all these tax cuts!!!

I am having trouble imagining the original Adams Family (Samuel and John) buying off on Biden's idea of patriotism. Instead of the Boston Tea Party, we would have seen the patriots fighting to move up in the line to get into tax collector's office. Imagine Thomas Paine describing the Sunshine Patriot as one who did not pay his taxes. Sort of boggles the mind, doesn't it?

OH, and gee, how about we drill for our own energy resources and provide JOBS HERE IN THE USA so we can PAY more taxes to give to the lower classes. How about instead of strangling General Motors and taxing our corporations to the tune of 35% and forcing standards upon them (so we can all be green), why don't we eliminate a lot of that and let the free market THRIVE. Gosh, what a concept. GET OUT OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR'S WAY and quit using the government as a welfare company.

Let's let EVERY American feel patriotic. Cut earned income tax credits and start taxing EVERYONE earing $1.00 or more. Seems like that we we can ALL come together and feel patriotic.

Of course Biden who gave $396 dollars total in charity is VERY patriotic! I hope the congress has to pay their portion for patriotism. My guess is they won't, Hoe can people be so stupid???

What about the illegal immigrants? How will Obama tax them? Oh, that's right, the Americans will be paying for the health care and welfare for all the people who do not belong here. We will be a third world country like Kenya when Obama is done.

Samantha. You are so wrong! How do you know that the people that are in debt are "too lazy and without character"? Many people have financial problems because of real issues, things that you wouldn't know about because you think you sit on top of the world because you're "rich"! Why shouldn't the rich help the economy out? We understand your wallets may be hurting a little bit, but we should all contribute to help the needy.

The GOP has held the White House 28 of the last 40 years, including the last 8; nominated seven of the nine Supreme Court justices and held Congress for 12 of the last 14 years, including 6 of the last 8.
It would be great, if the GOP Cultists, would remember God gave them brains... to actually use.
The only Socialism is the Corporate Socialism, bailing out failed Corporate entities.
Me... I'd prefer to help PEOPLE in need, than corrupt Corporations.

i posted this on another blog ,but it is needed here i see.
ok ,you pay too much taxes. i understand. let me advise you on how to fix that problem
1) work less = pay less taxes
simple eh?
2) sell some houses/boats/cars/stocks/gold/platinum/etc = your taxes will go down (eventually ,but you will have to pay capital gains tax because guess what?? YOU ARE RICH!!!
3) move to haiti ,taxes are very low there (As are services ,but hey you can do all that yourself right, i mean have your own army navy air force police trash collector dog catcher etc etc.. right?)
4)move to venezuela , ok so your money and business will get nationalized but then you wont have to pay nearly as much in taxes ,which was your original concern right?
YOU PEOPLE ARE PATHETIC AND I HOPE OBAMA AND NANCY GET CHARLIE RANGEL AND BARNEY FRANK IN ON THE COMMISSION THAT IS GOING TO BE FORMED TO INSTITUTE THE NEW REPUBLICAN/BIG BUSINESS BUSTING TAX LAWS!!!
GO GO GO NANCY !!!HAHAHAAHAH!!

Typical White Elephant: *HIGH FIVE*
Trickle down taxes only land on the CONSUMER regardless of tax bracket.
Obama has everyone starstruck with his 95% mantra, so starstruck that they don't realize how all his other tax increases and elimination of tax breaks will affect them in bad ways. Many of those 95% americans WORK for that 5% who are also referred to as EMPLOYERS!
Gag me, I am watching OReilly who is talking about the filthy rich and billionaire and liberal financier George Soros back Obama.
wow, one of his campaign advisors, Valerie Jarrett was born in Iran. Wow. Penny Pritzker, another Obama filthy rich supporter and campaign worker, if not advisor. All these ultra rich Chicago backers. Hmmm, wonder how far away we are from Chicago Mafia backers?

Sorry, I didn't mean to criticize "Samantha". My comment was directed toward "obamayomama."
THINK AGAIN RICH KID!

Yes, Jon, there are people in REAL need, but there are also people who know how to play the system. We call them parasites living off your hard-earned money. My husband worked for Pratt-Whitney in the 60's. We had two small children. I didn't work because of the children. He made $2.60 an hour. We lived on peanuts and the pawn shop! Never thought of asking the government for money. We had too much pride. Today, there is no pride, just gimme, gimme, gimmee.

Warren Buffett has famously said, “if there is a class war in America, my side is winning.” In his annual letter to shareholders this year, the billionaire investment guru urged corporations to pony up on taxes, saying, "We hope our taxes continue to rise in the future—it will mean we are prospering—but we also hope that the rest of corporate America antes up along with us.”
FACTS:
In 2004, tax fraud was estimated at $311 billion a year, more than the entire budget for Medicare.
Most cheaters go unpunished. What’s worse, the legal tax system is rigged to favor rich people and large corporations at the expense of ordinary citizens and small businesses.
If tax dodging were a business, it would be the nation’s largest corporation. The current $311 billion tax gap is the equivalent of the total income taxes paid annually by all individuals and families earning less than $75,000.
If we simply collected taxes that cheaters are withholding from the system, we would have enough to give a free college education to every child in America, or to provide health insurance for small business employees, or to cut social security taxes in half.
It amounts to more money than we spent for Medicare in 2003, almost as much as the Defense budget in the same year, and almost enough to pay this year’s deficit of $403 billion.
Large corporations and rich individuals have greater opportunities to cheat – by understating income or shipping money to foreign tax havens, by inflating deductions or claiming expenses that never existed, or by speculating in the stock market and then not reporting the gains.
People with a job or a pension have no similar opportunity to lie about income or evade taxes.
As their biggest donors turned into the biggest tax cheaters, politicians have reacted by handcuffing the tax police. Congress has consistently under-funded IRS enforcement efforts and computer upgrades that would catch more tax dodgers.
Even when everybody abides by the law, middle-income households pay more taxes than rich ones. And politicians keep handing out tax favors to their campaign contributors – at our expense.
A tax system favoring the rich fuels the growing concentration of wealth in America – and therefore threatens our economic growth and even our democracy.
Middle class spending is the growth engine in a free market economy, and when taxes rob the middle class in favor of the rich, the economy shuts down.
Huge fortunes also produce political power that is hard to control. That’s why all modern democracies use their tax laws to prevent excessive concentration of wealth. And that’s why we need a fair taxes campaign in America.
In this election year, both candidates are certain to say a lot of things about taxes. But neither of them is likely to talk about fraud, favoritism and abuse of power.
In the year 2000, at the height of the last economic boom, IRS data shows that on average, the richest 400 taxpayers each had taxable income of $151 million, but these 400 taxpayers paid 27% of their income in federal, state, and local taxes.
All other taxpayers had average taxable income of only $34,600, and yet their tax burden was 40%.
“Since 1980, America’s elected officials have turned a reasonably fair tax code into one crafted for the benefit of those who give the largest campaign contributions, enjoy the greatest access, hire the most influential lobbyists, or otherwise exercise power beyond that enjoyed by average citizens.”
In 1965, individual taxpayers paid 66% of all US income taxes, and corporations paid about a third. But by 2000, the corporate share had dropped to 18%.
Not since 1929 have so few people controlled so much of the wealth in our country. Between 1970 and 2000 average annual income for the top 13,400 households in America increased from $3.6 million to nearly $24 million. That’s a staggering 538% increase. These 13,400 households account for just .01% of the population.
At the same time, the average income for 90% of US households actually fell from $27,060 to $27,035.
Between 1990 and 2000, the average CEO pay went up by 571% and corporate profits grew by 93% while worker pay barely stayed ahead of inflation.
Historians point out that more people moved up into the middle class during the 1950s and 1960s – and American wealth was much less concentrated – when the top income tax rate was 91%, impacting salaries and capital gains equally.
According to IRS data for 2000, most American households earned 70% of their income from work and only 10% from capital gains. But in the highest tax brackets, the situation is completely reversed.
The Bush budget for 2005 cuts another $6 billion in federal support to states, and yet public investment in education, job training, child care, the environment, energy, and research is already less than half what it was during the 1960s and 1970s.
Prosperity that was supposed to ‘trickle down’ has instead flowed straight uphill.
Currently, the republican agenda works to place the cost of health insurance on the backs of those making the least and removing this burden from corporations and replace public schools with private corporations (think Freddie Mac and Fannie May – as long as they make money its private, when such a system begins to crumble its the taxpayers turn to pick up the bill; the new capitalism.)

isnt it rather telling how just the THOUGHT of a liberal black man with his "uppity" hand on the the tax handle has the rich white upper crust (aka lady rothschild & co.) shaking with dread...

PAYBACK TIME!!!!!
I FREEEKING LOVE IT!!!!!!!

you people who say "tax the rich" have no idea what that means! Do you take into consideration what it took for those people to become "rich"? How about hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans to go to law school and medical school to better ourselves and to start small practices, so that I too can employ people and create jobs. Why should I have to pay your way too?!
