Biden Goes Back To School

Share

September 06, 2008 3:30 PM

ABC News' Matthew Jaffe reports: Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., went back to school Saturday, surprising his students at Widener University School of Law in Wilmington by returning to teach his weekend class there.

Since 1991, Biden has taught "Selected Topics in Constitutional Law", a two-hour class held Saturdays at 9:00 am, but for obvious reasons the Democratic vice-presidential candidate hasn't been around the last few weeks.

Biden's co-professor Bob Hayman, who has helped teach the class since 2003, and their students were surprised to see Biden make an unexpected, but welcome, return from the campaign trail.

"Today we had a regular class," Hayman said, laughing. "We almost talked about the campaign not at all. We talked about separation of powers, we talked about the framers' vision of the Constitution. I think maybe today was a refuge from the campaign for him to some extent, a time for him to be a teacher again."

"Even though he couldn't be there in the same capacity as he was before he became the nominee, we were all thrilled to see that he came this morning," said Christell Hershey, a student who works at a financial firm during the day and takes law classes on the side.

"It was just nice," she said. "We had coffee and doughnuts and we had a nice relaxed Saturday morning class and it was just really fun."

"It was a pretty neat experience," echoed fellow student Joseph Pultrone. "It's not that often that you have, you know, a candidate for vice president talking to you within ten feet from your face. It was pretty cool."

"He definitely had our attention," added Pultrone.

The seminar, with a limit of 18 students, is "not the easiest one to get into," according to Widener Law School public relations director Dan Hanson. With the senator's busy schedule, the class hasn't always been the easiest for Biden to get into, either - in the past, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has taken the red-eye flight from Afghanistan to get back in time for it.

Biden, whose wife Jill is an English professor at nearby Delaware Technical & Community College, is "a really good teacher", according to Hayman, who noted that the senator is "obviously a very gifted speaker", but also a good listener.

"He's real good at listening to students and understanding not only the surface of things, but also understanding what their concerns are and addressing those concerns," he said. "I guess that comes from his day job, too."

The students should enjoy Biden's presence while they can because in the next 60 days, his schedule as Sen. Barack Obama's running mate may not allow him to come back many more times.

"I think they've got a pretty full calendar between now and November," said Hayman.

In February, Reuters news reported that McCain's former captors are expressing delight in the news of his nomination as Republican party Presidential candidate. "In the past Senator McCain has conducted activities that had a positive impact in bringing the two nations [Vietnam/United States] closer. That is a point that Vietnamese people who follow the current affairs do recognize," said retired North Vietnamese Colonel Nguyen Van Phuong, representing retired and present members of the Vietnamese communist military.

If you can not stand up against Vietnam and Bush, how can you stand up against Putin and the leaders of Iran, Korea, and Venezuela?

Mommy taught me I

Can't drink;

Can't enter into a legal contract;

Can't use condoms;

BUT I CAN have sex and get married when I am only 17!

Yippee! Thanks Mom.

I will be sure to teach my daughter that condoms really are ok to use. Sure better than being stuck with this redneck, well at least until after the elections. Then I am dumping his ass!

These are family values you can believe in.

MOM! This isn't the "Change" I signed up for!

You hear stories about Joe Biden like this, a commitment to young people (he obviously doesn't need to teach)and how committed he was after his wife died to his children. He seems like a really lovely person. What a positive person and a positive story.

If you Republicans really loved this country you would want more than anything for it to be a partner with others in the world instead of a bully who goes around declaring other countries to be "Rogue States", thus causing them to launch or to revive and escalate any weapons programs they may have had, now for self defense in the face of a super power gone amuck.

This world is getting smaller all of the time and it requires cooperation instead of somebody running around like a bull moose in a china shop.

You Republicans don't want to cooperate in the world or to cooperate in Washington. McCain showed that whatever skills he had for "reaching across the isle" are atrophied by picking Palin for VP. In fact I think that he is either in the early stages of dementia or has sold out to the hard right fascists. All they want to do now is pick a fight.

And you all sit out there listening to that $4oo million bag of wind and s**t, Rush Limbaugh and the like, who will say anything and everything to keep the graqy rolling in. What a sorry bunch!

Joe Biden is good people Lily. Speaks his mind and speaks directly to "normal hard working Americans".

We need to elect more leaders like him into both partys.

Yes, I says leaders. Most of these other people are just politicians.

That's McCain. He supported VN normalization because of the USA interest. US using VN to stop the China's development in Indonesia. "COUNTRY FIRST".

Lily bless you. You have restored my faith. There is at least one person who can make an intelligent, meaningful and insightful comment on this site. After reading other comments I was about ready to vomit. Wake up people! Vote for whoever you want but make it about issues not nonsense.

FACTS:

John S McCain was awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart for heroism and wounds in combat. This heroism has been played up in the press and in his various political campaigns. But it should be known that there were approximately 600 military POW's in Vietnam. Among all of us, decorations awarded have recently been totaled to the following: Medals of Honor - 8, Service Crosses - 42, Silver Stars - 590, Bronze Stars - 958 and Purple Hearts - 1,249. John certainly performed courageously and well. But it must be remembered that he was one hero among many - not uniquely so as his campaigns would have people believe.

There is a ton more but frankly, I got sick of getting them all in here.

yeah, I know, Joe Biden isn't hot like Palin, but at least he gets the job done.

My vote goes to who can get the job done, not to the hottest one!

Posted by: tbstang | Sep 6, 2008 5:59:45 PM

John McBush has NO CHARACTER when he can not clearly outline a plan to give relief to the middle class. So, I assume he plans to keep our noses down to the ground. We are nothing to him and the men and women who are dieing in this needless war must not mean much either. HE DISTORTS OBAMA’S VOTING RECORD AND HIS OWN. IS IT THAT HE LOVES TO LIE OR IS HE SUFFERING FROM MEMORY LOSS?
Clearly, his concern is for his wife and their RICH friends. Every time he is pressed on issues that affect the middle class, he brings up being a P.O.W. Well, will someone please tell me how does that qualify him to be the president of the U.S.A.?
PATRIOT YES-PRESIDENT NO!
WAKE-UP PEOPLE IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE! Obama & Biden

I don't know what some of y'all are talking about -- this is a great story about Biden and makes me like him even more! What an amazing man

tbstang, I learned to copy and paste in the 4th grade. Frankly you need more practice.

You left out a few with Hairplug Joe.

///////////////////////////////////
(see, I can do that too)

He also voted FOR the Iraq War, oops, before he joined Obammy and opposing it.

He also voted FOR every anti 2nd Amendment bill put before him. He really knows the Constitution, don't he???????

He also helps promote Obammy's CHANGE --- oops, sorry, he's been there 34 years, needs to be put out to pasture.

Sarah Palin....

Way to go tbstang!!

Obama/Biden

Posted by: Donna Hughes | Sep 6, 2008 6:25:50 PM

LarryMan,

Still waiting to see those documents from you.

Alot of Congressional Members of BOTH Houses and ALL Americans would not have gave Bush the go ahead if the CIA's assessment was not "manipulated".

Even the CIA said there were no evidence of those weapons at the time.

And did Iraq attack us? NO

So McCain and Bush decided to screw the American service members to pad the pockets of his and Cheney's stocks and bank accounts.

My Friend, that is what Straight Talk really is.

Just what I want in the highest office in the Land. Two liars and only one is hot!

Wait until the Keating 5 comes back from the grave next month:

http://www.slate.com/id/1004633/

Even the Senate Ethics Committee found guilty of at least "poor judgment".

Poor Judgment = Bush and the Iraq War.

McCain has demonstrated the same "Poor Judgment"

The American people have realized, or they will very soon, that these 2 people are the same.

And poor Sarah and her family. I feel sorry for them. Never in the history of our political system has a family been so used like them for personal power.

Posted by: tbstang | Sep 6, 2008 6:43:03 PM

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=
Stang, if you knew anything about history, you would be dangerous.

Want to show us proof that the assessment was "manipulated". There was "evidence" because he had used chemical weapons twice already.

There might be more evidence but it ended up in somebody's PANTS to protect Slick Willie.

Iraq was not capable of attacking anyone? DUH!!! Saddam had already attacked TWO countries. He had sent Scuds to Israel, for no reason at all. DUH!!!

Want to tell us just how Bush and Cheney screwed the American people and lined their stocks?

When you call someone a LIAR it usually requires proof. But, not in your case I suppose.

Bush and McCain the same people? You need to get an eye exam, my friend.

Sarah Palin? Get used to saying Madame President.

Posted by: LarryMan | Sep 6, 2008 7:03:59 PM

LarryMan,

Still waiting on your proof that Iraq attacked us...................

Still waiting for that evidence that the President has the authority to declare war. Please show me the Constitutional article that is in.

You are obviously not a history buff or anything close.

You my friend may vote with whatever matrix you use.

The matrix I use to make any decision contains facts, history, logic, and common sense - which appears to be about extinct these days.

You go ahead and vote for the McCain-EyeCandy ticket, just don't complain like the Bushites are now.

What is Bush's approval rating these day?

With McCain voting for 95% of the things Bush has wanted to get done in the last year or so, these two men really do represent the same ol' same ol'.

Good Luck

Posted by: tbstang | Sep 6, 2008 7:26:38 PM

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Stang, how about getting the peanut butter out of your ears and listen.

We attacked Iraq because Congress, Senate, UN, and every friggin' democrat said we could. Slick Willie BOMBED Iraq, during the impeachment hearings. I'll say it again, he BOMBED IRAQ, remember? I know it was past your bedtime at the time, 8:00, but believe me he did.

The president can wage a war. You remember a few presidents called Truman, LBJ, Reagan, Bush One. They did. I would say look it up but you would have to buy encyclopedias.

I don't see anyone polling in my area, I would vote for Bush for 8 more years. My taxes are the lowest they have ever been. My Constitutional Rights are safer today than they were before 2000. Guess all they poll are democrats.

Since you don't like the "same ol' same ol", I guess you don't like Hairplug Joe who has been in Washington for 34 years and, OH NO, VOTED for the Iraq war.

Shame on YOU, Joe OBiden.

Palin/McCain 08

Posted by: LarryMan | Sep 6, 2008 8:58:29 PM

Still waiting for that evidence........

Have you ever bothered to read the Constitution? If not, you don't even know what your rights are as a citizen. So please tell me how you know that your rights are safer now than at any other time in history .......

Oh, I know, because a politician told you so. Hilter was a politician too. So was Stalin.

I will give Bush credit on one thing:

He was able to purchase your votes for the past 8 years with those tax rebate checks every year. Pretty slick. Even McCain couldn't duplicate that on his own.

Well, until you can provide some factual documentation at the same time as running your mouth, I do not feel like using my time responding to your clouded judgment.
