Fact Check: Admiral Mullen and Obama's Iraq Plan

Share

September 26, 2008 10:56 PM

ABC News' Luis Martinez and Kirit Radia Report: Though Sen. Barack Obama pushed back on Republican presidential nominee's assertion during the debate that the country's top military official categorized his Iraq withdrawal plan as "dangerous", during a July interview Admiral Michael Mullen warned that the consequences of removing all U.S. troops by 2010 "could be very dangerous."

"Admiral Mullen suggests that Senator Obama's plan is dangerous," said Sen. John McCain.

"That's not the case," Obama interjected.

In fact, 'Fox News Sunday' host Chris Wallace asked Mullen to put Obama's plan aside and speak to the general consequences of removing all combat troops from Iraq within the next two years.

Mullen responded, ""I think the consequences could be very dangerous in that regard. I'm convinced at this point in time that…making reductions based on conditions on the ground are very important."

Mullen told Wallace commanders on the ground are "very, very adamant about continuing progress, about making decisions based on what's actually happening in the battle space."

Mullen added, "And I think that's just prudent."

Ha! That de-escalation bill was introduced by obama in january, referred to committee and died like on the same day.

mac was pulling a fast one, plain and simple. everyone knows what obammas plan is, the admiral wasn't talking about one that had died 7 months before the interview, and McCain knows it. The american people deserve better.

Obamas plan was actually brilliant, and showed a lot of insight into the problem. It called for an exit planned and coordinated by the military with provisions to remain under certain circumstances, but most importantly, its main goal was to seek a political solution rather than a military one.

And now, the recently released research by the RAND corporation shows _that_ has been the most effective way to defeat terrorist organizations by far, and rarely do military solutions work. http://www.rand.org/pubs/testimonies/CT314/index.html

Just a quick reality check for the mentally deficient:

The war in Iraq will NEVER END and it will NEVER BE 'WON'. There isn't even a definition of what would constitute victory in Iraq. Recently, there has been a weak effort to create one which typically involves some mumbled platitudes about "less violence", "standing on their own two feet", etc., but even if ALL of the violence in Iraq ended in 5 years - at which time we decided to leave - it would start up worse than ever just as soon as we left.

Iraq is not a cohesive or coherent country. It was an invention of the British Empire which didn't exist before the Brits needed some territory to award to their Arab allies in WWI.

Unless there is overwhelming firepower killing hundreds of thousands of people in a vain attempt to keep them from killing one another, the violence will not stop. Sunnis hates Shia. Shia hates Sunni. Neither one of them likes the Kurds. They all consider one another heretics and mass murderers. We've already killed a few hundred thousand civilians there in the effort to kill about 10,000 'insurgents'...but those insurgents (Sunni and Shia and Kurd) are now just waiting till we're gone in order to kill off one another. We're being duped by the sunni desert tribes and by the Iranian/Iraqi shia mullah's strategy of having periodic ceasefires until we leave.

There will clarly be no actual 'victory' for the U.S. there. Consequently, it's an act of supreme stupidity to stay there when we could declare the whole sorry episode a 'victory' (almost any excuse would do) and leave.

"Al Qaeda in Iraq has been strategically defeated."

And what a great victory that has been. Of course, they weren't there at all before we invaded, there were never more than about 1500 of them at most, and we had more than 100,000 troops there at all times. Yes, quite a victory. Now all we have to do is wait out the Sunnis and Shias for another 100 years in the hope that they'll stop considering one another heretics that should be killed. That will be the REAL 'victory'. Seriously, though, it probably won't take 100 years. As long as we're killing close to 100,000 Iraqis per year it won't be long until we've terrified them enough that most of them will be in Syria or Iran.

But it's all good...

America is all good...

We told the Iraqis that we're the "good guys" hundreds of thousands of times now.

Iraqis must obey their conquerors just like we'll soon have to obey the Chinese because we were too stupid to look after our own best interests and instead decided to play armchair warrior games.

Wow!
Where did you get those numbers? We killed a few hundred thousand civilians in the effort to kill about 10,000 'insurgents'
Why not make it a even million..maybe a couple trillion civilians. And damn it we must not have gotten ANY of the 'insurgents' in the 5 yrs we were there cause you state that those insurgents (Sunni and Shia and Kurd) are now just waiting till we're gone in order to kill off one another. Let me picture this there are 10,000 of them and there are 3 groups (Sunni and Shia and Kurd). That makes 3,333 each, and we'll give the extra 1/3 to the kurds since everyone hates them. If we leave it shouldn't take them long to wipe them selfs out. Or maybe we should just stay there another 50 yrs. and they'll all die of old age hiding behind 3 rocks.

Were you this upset when Clinton bombed the hell out of the Serbs cause they were massacring the Muslims? Of course no civilians were probably hit cause Clinton's army probably were better shots then Bush's. And after we left the Muslims massacred the now happless Serbs.

You don't see any benefit in having a democracy their where women can walk down the street and not be beaten. And young girls can go to school, you don't remember the purple fingers of the brave civilians (their were a couple left) risking their lives

U.S. Gen. David Petraeus said Thursday that a comprehensive approach is needed to quell the war in Afghanistan, including reconciliation within the population and "absolute engagement" with neighboring Pakistan. Extremists — be they al-Qaida, the Taliban or others with bases in tribal areas of Pakistan — have all contributed to Afghanistan's problems, Petraeus said. Neighboring Pakistan "faces a threat that certainly seems to be an existential threat,"...

mccain was right again patraeous will do what needs to be done there

and he was right about what the general said about iraq

"Iraq remains "the central front" for al-Qaida and other extremist organizations, Gen. David Petraeus, the departing commander of U.S. troops in Iraq, said in an interview Tuesday. "

If the Obamunist wins, there will be few Christian Southern White children signing up for the military.

We will get a draft, and dope and cocain users, liberals and all will get a chance to serve the Country.....people kinda like Obama himself.

Isn't it interesting to note that Obama has so much military training and experience that he knows more than the generals in the field? Isn't it amazing how much gaul Obama has to attempt, as a democrat party candidate for the presidency, the Iraq government to follow his proposed American withdrawal plans from Iraq. Here Obama is NOT the president and he's directing a foreign government to his wishes. How arrogant can one be? Obama the clown
