Fact Check: McCain Invokes Eisenhower Letters

Share

September 26, 2008 11:33 PM

ABC News' Reynolds Holding Reports: Calling on President Eisenhower to deliver a lesson about accountability, Sen. John McCain invoked two letters authored by the 34th president the night before the Normandy invasion during Friday's presidential debate. One letter, McCain said, was authored in the event that the D-Day invasion was a success and the other, a resignation, in the event it was a failure.

According to the National Archives, late on the afternoon of June 5, 1944, Eisenhower scribbled a note intended for release accepting responsibility for the decision to launch the invasion and taking full blame in the event the effort to create a beachhead on the Normandy coast failed.

In the letter, Eisenhower takes responsibility but makes no mention of resignation.

CNN poll (not website poll) show 51% of viewer felt Obama won the debate. 38% for McCain.

Wow! I am shocked that CNN has Obama winning the debate!!!!!

/sarcasm

Of course, ol' Ike and McCain were buddies back then and Ike confided to McCain about those letters, never revealing them to the public...

Poor McCain...too old, too late

He should have beaten Bush back in the day...

AND LIKE MOST I'M WONDERING WHY IN 2008 WITH 2 WARS & A DIRE ECONOMY, WHO WOULD GIVE A CRAP ABOUT WHAT SOMEONE WROTE IN REGARDING BATTLE IN 1944, SINCE MOST WITH INTELLIGENCE PERFECTLY KNOW WHAT A "HISTORY BOOK" IS! THANK GOD McCAIN DIDN'T RAMBLE ON ANYMORE, BECAUSE NEXT WE WOULD BE GETTING A COMPARABLE LECTURE ON HOW THE CAVE MEN STRATEGICALLY HELD THEIR OWN AGAINST FIERCE DINOSAURS TO CLAIM VICTORY!

As most of CNN coverage is biased towards Obama, a poll favoring his poor performance in the debate is not a surprise...

Anybody But Obama...

Drudge has it about reversed to CNN's poll.

This debate clearly was a wash. In both national and local coverage the it was a win for the candidate the person supported.

I had laughed out loud when I saw a big Obama Wins! screen. I wonder what the leanings of the former Democratic White House communications director George Stephanopolis are?

Forget about the biased media crud. It dosen't matter, what mattered is that McCain didn't share his vision of America. What he felt needed to be done. I didn't hear anything execpt a little old whining wind bag. Almost everything he said was a standard, SAFE answer. I hope he can step up to the plate!

McCain's point is still valid. Eisenhower was ready to take personal responsibility for his acts, in sad contrast to today's Washington, where no one is willing to take responsibility.

Why not quote what the letter said?:

http://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/d-day-message/

Our landings in the Cherbourg - Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory
foothold and I have withdrawn. My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air and the navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty can do.

If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt, it is mine alone.

It is nothing compared to Obama's past comment indicating that there are 53 states or Biden's assertion that FDR spoke on TV.

CBS debate poll.

Obama 40
Even 38
McCain 22

Reporting on the part of CNN has been shamelessly lopsided and I don't think I have to point to which side they have lopped. Why don't they just report the facts. Is that not what journalist do? But anyway, thanks for letting us know where you stand CNN.

heck... oj simpson could have done a better job

Sen McCain started the debate off with class -- acknowledging Sen Kennedy in hospital.

The number of times Sen McCain was able to draw on history, historical context was impressive....but I expected that, since he is a graduate of one of the toughest schools of leadership in the world...

Obama looked like a lightweight in comparison to McCain. Even he had to concede to McCain over and over again...8 times by my count..."(Sen McCain)is absolutely correct".

Sen McCain knows how to lead. He said it clearly: he doesn't need on the job training.

Sen Obama is still in the "intern" phase. He thinks he has all the answers, but doesn't have the experience, judgment or track record.

How did you like Obama calling McCain "John" all night? McCain called Obama "Senator Obama." That's a tactic Obama employed. He didn't do it because they're pals and he's folksy like that.

Hey, Joe Biden, about you and your recollection of FDR on TV in 1929? Well, get this, McCain referred to what "President Eisenhower" was writing during WWII! lol

The Keating 5 is haunting McCain. That's why he looks so white. like he's seen a ghost!

Poor McCain...
He seems so old and frail. Like an old soldier hanging on the glory of yesterday.
I'm afraid he's seen his last hoorah.

It was a clear Obama win. McCain offered nothing but his stump speech in mishmash form. Obama was landing haymaker after haymaker and all McCain could do was immediately launch into a 70s or 80s era anectdote completely unrelated to the material point. That was pathetic. Remember the 3 haymakers about the Iraq War that Obama looked directly at McCain "You were WRONG on Iraq, you said we'd be greeted as liberators, you said there was no fighting between Sunni/Shia" etc. All MCCain could do was look at Cindy and absorb those shots...D'uh! D'uh! D'uh!

Obama is going to coast to victory. What will be even more humiliating for McCain is to see Sarah Palin get fatally abused by Joe Biden, if she bothers to even show up at the debate at this point....

"How did you like Obama calling McCain 'John' all night?"

Seems fairly obvious to me.  Obama was making the point, subliminally, that he considered himself John's equal.  He called his last adversary "Hillary" after all, and I don't recall there being any major squawking about it.  (Course her dedicated supporters called her Hillary too, just as Palin's most fervent supporters tend to call her "Sarah" instead of "Governor Palin".)  And then there's the generational thing…  Little less dedication to the formalities that sometimes seem so important to the old folks.  So maybe Obama was just being Obama.

I SENT THIS LETTER TO MY REPRESENTATIVES IN CONGRESS:

We demand that Congress stops adding earmarks and pork within the contents of the "Bail Out Bill". In addition we do not want a payout to ACORN --- or any organization like ACORN.

We feel this is an egregious abuse of House and the Senate positions in Congress. Enough is enough.

We will no longer continue to vote or support any Representative or Senator who votes for bills with earmarks and pork or allots money to ACORN.

I BELIEVE THE PEOPLE WHO WALKED AWAY WITH TONS OF MONEY SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BAIL OUT.

If the government agrees to pay off mortgages for people who bought homes they could not afford --- then the government needs to pay off ALL mortgages for ALL legal American citizens.

I don't want my tax payments used to pay off somebody else's home!

I PERSONALLY AM AGAINST A WALL STREET BAILOUT BUT AT LEAST FORKING OVER A THIRD OF THE MONEY --- WITH THE REST CONTINGENT ON EFFECTIVENESS --- MAKES SENSE.

I AM TOTALLY AGAINST GIVING 10% TO ORGANIZATIONS LIKE “ACORN”. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BUY HOMES THEY CAN’T AFFORD. DO NOT BAIL THEM OUT.
