Fact Check: McCain Invokes Eisenhower Letters

Share

September 26, 2008 11:33 PM

ABC News' Reynolds Holding Reports: Calling on President Eisenhower to deliver a lesson about accountability, Sen. John McCain invoked two letters authored by the 34th president the night before the Normandy invasion during Friday's presidential debate. One letter, McCain said, was authored in the event that the D-Day invasion was a success and the other, a resignation, in the event it was a failure.

According to the National Archives, late on the afternoon of June 5, 1944, Eisenhower scribbled a note intended for release accepting responsibility for the decision to launch the invasion and taking full blame in the event the effort to create a beachhead on the Normandy coast failed.

In the letter, Eisenhower takes responsibility but makes no mention of resignation.

While eisenhower did not use the word resignation, the letter is clearly one of the sort.

Obama would have done well if he hadn't been disrepectful throughout the debate calling McCain John and interrupting him regularly with emotional outbursts. McCain focused on the future when asked to look forward, but tied in past events, while Obama focused on the past and tied in current events.

Ad Tracy Lynn: Jim Lehrer told Obama to "speak to him---John" at the outset of the debate. Also, the Drudge poll *is a Web poll*, namely a sample of those who visit Drudge---which is a Rep-leaning site. Not relevant.

Ad Laurel: yes, praising Teddy had class too. But although the McCain campaign ginned up an ad with the "I agree with John" footage before the debate was even over, that's won't impress anyone. Heck, according to a CNN fact-check item: Obama agrees with Bush 40% of the time! But---McCain did land blows with the "Sen. Obama doesn't understand..." references.

Ad Donindm: saying "resignation" when it wasn't was indeed a mistake---especially for a prepared line, and more weighty than FDR going on television. And the lack of accountability he decries is the salient feature of W's administration.

Ad Recall1990s, I winced at the "Obama Wins" screen---with a green checkmark even---but at least they were reporting the result of a fair poll, and at least it wasn't prepared (and released:-) beforehand like McCain's Chinese-rocket-launch-of-an-ad and statement!

Senator McCain is a decent man, I, as an older gent myself, feel it's time to let a new generation of Americans handle the many problems this great country faces. With the help of God, I believe Senator Obama can do that.

AMERICANS: Senator Obama is using police tactics in the United States of America to stop FREEDOM of SPEECH. It is not the duty of The Missouri Ethics Commission to usurp the freedoms guaranteed by the BILL of Rights first amendment in the American Constitution.

How does The Missouri Ethics Commission and law enforcement guarantee that Senator Obama is telling the truth, the whole true, and nothing else but the whole truth? The Missouri Ethics Commission is saying only other people lie and use deception, not Senator Obama.

The Missouri Law must be placed under the scrutiny of the State and Federal Supreme Courts. Such unconstitutional laws must be stricken from the books.

Obama must be stop by the Attorney General for using unconstitutional methods, deception, and lies. It is evident that Missouri supports slavery and Senator Obama leads the way. It will be a horrific day in America when Americans are denied FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

McCain stuttered through the entire debate and couldn't even pronounce world leader's names correctly. What a buffoon. McCain also appears to be stuck on cranky; maybe he needs his pants changed. For those that were undecided, Obama impressed. For the bible bound bigots, well, they'll always be stuck on stupid and wouldn't recognize Jesus as a good thing if he was up on stage.

Obama is a liberal cliche. He obviously has not had an original thought in his life.

ohh John ... it's time to pack your bags and go home ... he's mired in the past and believes in this ridiculous notion of punishing dictatorships by not talking to them -- how do you make progress that way? even the Bush administration has changed course on this -- McCain seemed out of touch and focused too much time discussing ear marks, which make up a tiny percentage of the budget -- that was a laugh!

time to go Johnny boy!

RightisWrong,"For the bible bound bigots." Said like a true Muslim. Allah is with you. Bless you my son. I will light a candle for you. It is evident you prefer slavery.

Taxes: McCain knows that when government absorbs ever-larger shares of national income, the economy suffers.

High tax rates diminish investment, killing jobs and stunting growth.

And while Obama promises tax cuts for “95 percent” of Americans, what he actually is proposing is some $650 billion in tax-credit-driven hikes in entitlement and other spending, to be paid for with heavier imposts across the board, but especially on investment - like a sharply higher capital-gains tax.

This is bad news for the millions of ordinary Americans who own stocks, either personally or through pension funds or who plan someday to sell their homes or other real property.

McCain, wisely, vows to keep capital-gains taxes at 15 percent and to keep the Bush-era tax cuts in place - understanding that new growth will boost revenue, and promising to make up the rest with spending restraint.

And he’s called for a one-year freeze on most discretionary spending and an end to pork-barrel giveaways.

McCain must let go of Viet Nam. He is still fighting the war. He knows he didn't surrender an by god he will get even with them in Iraq if we have to stay 100 years and he don't care how many young Americans pay with their life..
Come on Johnny, get over it I did.. The war is over for you old man so move on before you have a heart attack over it and then NAM will win again..You can only hate for so long then it eats you up like a cancer....

Obama was petulant, intellectual, and irritated. McCain was earnest and concerned.

Obama's business tax hike will raise prices on all goods and services in the united states. It will reduce pay to US workers, and result in more jobs going overseas. If that isn't a hidden tax, I don't know what is. This tax hike will by like cyanide for our economy.

Wild Fire...You must have missed Obama stating he would send troops into Pakistan. Obama sounds like another President Johnson who expanded the Vietnam War. READ your HISTORY. Demmocrats and the military-industrial complex.

LOL Missouri radio troofers. You believe everything you hear on the radio, huh? Tin foil hats and all.

Posted by: New Jerseyan | Sep 27, 2008 1:17:36 AM

If it wasn't true, you would hear from the Obama camp. It is on TV. Wake up to FACTS. Just like an Obama supporter to make a worthless empty statement.

Posted by: Judge | Sep 27, 2008 1:21:15 AM

Judge, that is where we should have been intead of Iraq.
John Boy is stuck in the past and can't talk to anyone. Didn't Ike warn us against the military-industrial complex and Mr Bush and his gang wanted to rape a country so the military-industrial complex could have NO BID contracts so America could also be raped at the same time..McCain is just another Bush..I would rather pay a few more dollars in taxes and have our boys and girls home so they can spend Christmas with their family instead of having to keep up the Bush revenge "for his daddy" war. I've been in war "IT AINT PRETTY" let me tell you that just in case you din't know.

Wild Fire...You must have missed Obama stating he would send troops into Pakistan. Obama sounds like another President Johnson who expanded the Vietnam War. READ your HISTORY. Democrats and the military-industrial complex.

The Americans do not need to pay more taxes to bring home the troops. In fact, the military has weapons that can destroy the entire population of entire countries without destruction of any buildings.

You are being suckered by the Obama camp for higher taxes in a ploy that will expand the Middle East War and kill more American troops. A ploy that will destroy America.

Posted by: Judge | Sep 27, 2008 1:45:01 AM

By God, if I was the President of the United States of America, I would issue a warning today to governor of Missouri to stop the police action of usurping the freedoms guaranteed by the BILL of Rights first amendment in the American Constitution, Freedom of Speech. The warning would include the sending of federal troops into Missouri to guarantee the good people of Missouri their freedoms under the Bill of Rights.

The unconstitutional tactics used in Missouri are like the tactics of Hitler and the Nazi party. No where in this great United States of America should we let such unconstitutional rules stand to govern a free people. Missouri returns to slavery and Senator Obama leads the way.

Senator John McCain is a true American hero and deserves to be Commander and Chief. He certainly won the first debate by a land slide. "Hussein" didn't come close to the dignity, character, intellect and concern for the American people as Senator McCain. What a contrast. "Hussein" is not qualified and has no character. His stuttering and rambling showed that even after 3 days of preparation he was no match for Senator McCain. He isn't worthy to be in the presence of Senator McCain. What disrespect he showed by calling him "John" and even called him "Tom", one time. Surely, the DNC could have come up with someone better than "Hussein"??? Never has anyone been nominated for the highest office, so unqualified, so anti-American, so socialistic, communistic, Marxist in the History of our great nation. The DNC should be ashamed for allowing "Hussein" to be on the ticket. What a disgrace.

-- Democrats and the military-industrial complex. --

Wow.. that's the first time in this election I've heard that accusation! Most rabid repubs have been bashing on Obama for wanting to shrink the defense budget, just like Clinton. Go figure!
