Fact Check: Obama Misleads on $250,000 Tax Claim

Share

September 26, 2008 10:14 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Nitya Venkataraman Report: During Friday's presidential debate, Sen. Barack Obama provided a loose interpretation of his tax plan, saying that those making less than $250,000 a year "will not see one dime's worth of tax increase."

It's not entirely true.

Obama has called for higher taxes on income, capital gains and dividends for individuals making $200,000 per year; his tax plan imposes higher taxes on couples starting at $250,000 a year.

Sherly

I can see your claim, but my worry is this

McCain is nearing the life expectancy age in the United States.

SO who wold be better president?
OBAMA or PALIN (or Giuliani, not sure what that was about...)

Taxes are going up whomever is elected, or are they going to keep on borrowing. As far as I am concerned I will vote for someone that didn't cheat on a wife that was true to him I wonder what carol has to say about her ex husband, applies for a marriage license while still married to her to marry the rich trophy wife that never worked a day in her life. Dumb and dumber this country does not need more of the last 8 years sorry but I can not in good conscience vote for dumb and dumber.

Kissinger did not say he favored unconditional talks...he said he favored direct talks. Big difference. I guess Barak's ivy league liberal education did not include English

McCain did not give us any FACTS during his debate. He has lied about SO MANY THINGS in this campaign its unreal. Independent groups who rate commercials have said he has SIX major, outright lies in these commercials. WAKE UP people and vote for the candidate who will make the country better. .... It's NOT McCAIN.

So there are only 5% of Americans making over $250,000? Don't get me wrong, that's a lot of money, I'm just surprised at that percentage.

Hey, what's with Obama's accent when he says "Pakistan" or "Taliban"? Anybody else notice?

Posted by: leigh | Sep 26, 2008 10:59:15 PM

I can't believe these are the only two people we have to pick from for our president! Maybe Obama and McCain should get together and work on the economy issues until they come to an agreement. Just like a jury!

So if higher taxes start on couples making 250,000 per year why doesn't he say that or families. In my world if a couple makes 250,000 per year that means 125,000 each doesn't it? or 100,000 and 150,000, or even 50,000 and 200,000. So someone making 50,000 per year could see the taxes on their family go up.

David - Your an idiot. No wonder you make minimum wage.

McCain is commanding in tonight's debate; Obama, weak. McCain speaks like a President; Obama like a politician.

Posted by: young_voter | Sep 26, 2008 11:03:20 PM

And yes the way he said Pakistan and Taliban was said with an accent that any American not raised muslim would not have.

Michelle sure popped up in the camera fast after the handshake.

Posted by: leigh | Sep 26, 2008 11:04:06 PM

Come on already! All Obama said tonight is well I voted no for the war. Big friggin deal. It was wrong, it was bad, but we're there. We need to know what is going to happen. We don't need someone stamping his feet and pouting "but I said No". Wake up People!!! I don't understand why the press is in love with this guy...
