Fact Check: Palin Wrong on Former VP Credentials
September 11, 2008 9:04 PM
ABC News' Lisa Chinn reports: During her interview with ABC News' Charlie Gibson Thursday Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin attempted to deflect a question about the fact she has never met a foreign head of state by saying that "many" other vice presidential nominees in history hadn't met a head of state either.
However Palin was mistaken, at least where recent history is concerned.
Every vice president over the last 30 years had met a foreign head of state before being elected.
"Have you ever met a foreign head of state?" Gibson asked Palin Thursday.
"I have not," Palin said, "and I think if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you."
However Palin, who obtained her first passport two years ago, would in fact be the first vice president in 32 years who hadn't met a foreign head of state, if she were elected.
The current Vice President Dick Cheney is a former Secretary of Defense and met foreign leaders in that capacity.
Former Vice President Al Gore was a member of the Senate Armed Forces Committee and went on many congressional trips abroad, known as CODELS, where he met foreign leaders.
Former Vice President Dan Quayle was also a member the Senate Armed Committee and went on many CODELS.
Former President George H.W. Bush was the Ambassador to China before he became a vice president and eventually president.
Walter Mondale, who became vice president in 1977 under President Jimmy Carter, was a senator for 16 years before becoming VP and met foreign leaders

The Barracuda as she likes to be called is a minnow in a very dangerous sea full of Tiger Sharks. Putin would have her before breakfast as an appeitizer.

Obama says...small town mayors, "trim trees, fill potholes, collect garbage" . What a SCUM bag elitist!

PALIN HIT ANOTHER GRAND SLAM
It's amazing how so many Liberal reporters like Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times have been forced to admit it.
Great job Governor Palin.

The meeting with a head of state is of relative minor importance compared to her endorsing George W Bush's preemptive strike on Iraq.
Gibson should have asked her if it was acceptable to make up intelligence to justify killing and wounding thousands of innocent and whether a President that lies to star a war should be impeached.

She says she doesn’t want to bring back the cold war but does want to employ sanctions against Russia and threaten military action against Russia. That sure sounds like the cold war to me. Does she know what the cold war was? Maybe that's like the Bush Doctrine she hadn't heard about either.

VP nominees, not VPs.

What ever happened to a regular american running for office? Are only the noble ruling elit allowed to run for the highest offices in our land. I guess I missed that in Civics class. I also don't recall being a "Washington Insider" or a " Hollywood Insider" a prerequisite for the office according the Constitution. She has executive experience and made tough decisions which is more than we can say of the Presidential nominee of the opposite ticket.
Why has so much been made of her sex when Obama has made so much of his race? Maybe the DNC annoiting a good-looking black man is cynical politics because only a good looking, extremely well-funded, Howard Dean-speaking and totally media backed person would be able to beat the Clinton machine. Hmmmmmm.

i am not crooked enough to be involved in politics but i want to be informed an what is going to affect me , my town, my state and my country . I could give a poop what goes on in russia thats their business not ours. We would be better off cleaning our own back porches before we did it for the world. Clean up this country get every one working, get every one health care and start cleaning up the environment. And rememberf mc bush has a score to settle with vietnam.

I think you need to return to grade school for extra lessons. One, on developing sentence structure. Two, the proper use of capitalizations. Three, recess and a nap.

I just read an article from Lynn Sweet from the Chicago Tribune who gave Palin a pass on this interview but I couldn't disagree with her more. Anyone who gives her a pass on not even knowing what the Bush Doctrine is, or repeating scripted answers that were never followed up with any depth of knowledge, to repeating the same answer 3 times regarding Israel. Giving this a pass is being is jeopardizing this nations future.

Becca: The only reason world leaders want Obama to become president is because they want to deal with a minority like themselves and they think he is an easy touch. There are a lot of minorities in Europe and Obama fits the bill. However, he is not ready to run a country and I think they are aware of it. Of course, he has Biden to help him and he will need plenty of help.

Lisa Chinn wrong on Sarah palin!!!!!!!!!
Lisa, Charlie, Diane and the rest I have a question. Is Obama going to give you guys cabinet positions???? Are you going to get kickbacks, maybe a nice Rolex watch? I was just wondering what was in it for you all.

Actually Tom, they went back to Mondale, who had. Spiro Agnew, probably not, but there's a chance given Maryland's proximity to Washington. Lyndon Johnson certainly. Richard Nixon probably. We know she tossed that answer out with great conviction but not a clue as to whether it was true. That's going to be her MO I suspect.

I apologize for spelling elite incorrectely. I was typing too fast.

She didn't even know what the Bush Doctrine was. Good lord, we want this woman to be inches from the presidency? Nice caption for this though, "Moose in the Headlights". That about explains her interview.

I think Charlie should get a D- for the way he asked the questions. I agree he was very condescending, i.e., a jerk. He let his personal prejudices come thru his tone and body language. I'm sure he would have come across much differently if she were a male.

Never apologize its a sign of weakness and Repub's will swarm on you.

Excuse me Ms. Chin, but I didn't know "history" was limited to the last 32 years. Gov. Palin did not say "many other VP nominees in the last 32 years...", she said "many other VP nominees in history...". Her statement is factually correct. Aside from being humorous in its irony, for you to post a "Fact Check" report and call her "wrong" when it is you that is so obvioulsy wrong is just another example of how the rush to bring this woman down is only making mainstream media types look foolish. Please find something newsworthy to report on Ms Chin.

NY times has called ABC News liars. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
from the NY Times
The network teased the interview on its Web site this afternoon with this eye-popping bulletin: “Exclusive: Gov. Sarah Palin warns war may be necessary if Russia invades another country.”
But the transcript showed that she was merely repeating Mr. McCain’s position and had not used provocative language. And we’re wondering if the McCain camp is reconsidering its selection of ABC, since it hyped the teaser to sound like Ms. Palin was ready to press the button.
