Hot Mic in St. Paul
September 03, 2008 5:59 PM
ABC News' Sara Just reports: It seems that Republicans Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy were caught in a bit of unguarded conversation today. Watch the clip below.
Noonan, a former speechwriter to Ronald Reagan and a Wall Street Journal columnist, and Murphy, a longtime GOP campaign strategist, were guests on MSNBC when host Chuck Todd breaks for a commercial. The camera cuts to a wideshot, but the audio continues for another couple of minutes, as the GOPers debate the selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate, including:
Murphy: It's not going to work.
Noonan: It's over.
Murphy: But still, McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.
Todd: I think this was insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson ... She’s never looked comfortable with this.
Murphy: they’re all bummed out.
Todd: I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?
Noonan: The most qualified? No. I would think they went for the, excuse me, political bull***t about narratives...
Noonan: Every time Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it.
Murphy: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism and this is cynical.

Lol.

Yeah Larry but they were two conservative republican commentators...Peggy Noonan was even Reagan's speechwriter. Can't get more Republican than that.

At least they didn't say Obama talks down to black people.

Peggy Noonan is great friends with Kay Bailey and she's pissed.
Big freakin deal.

Tsk. Tsk. I'm surprised NBC would want this to be shown.
Interesting.

You're right. This thing is over.

This is revealing. I wish you could embed this before it's taken off You tube. Right now the counter says it has had 215 views, but has been favorited more than 400 times. I wonder what the real count is....
Someone's trying to stop it from going viral? Or at least showing up on the You tube charts.
Amazing....
Posted by: Jerome | Sep 3, 2008 6:19:43 PM
Jesse Jackson said what he really thought about Obama and it didn't effect him. This won't either. Plus Obama is the TOP of the ticket.
Seriously, this is weak, but glad to see you're excited over nothing. Shows desperation.

These are two REPUBLICAN pundits expressing their truthful OPINIONS when they thought their mikes were off.
Who knew Republicans could be so savvy?
Posted by: mila | Sep 3, 2008 6:25:19 PM
What marvels me is that they are all Republicans hiding but saying the TRUTH. Now when they finish, they come out and attack the same Media or Obama's camp to divert attention. But now we have their voices on tape. All we need is to play it over and over again. Sarah experience? Play the tape. Reformist? Play the tape.

Wow! Republicans being honest! Who'da thunk it?
Posted by: Will | Sep 3, 2008 6:25:49 PM
So disappointed with Peggy Noonan. Thought she was the real, real deal. For her to write about Palin one way in her WSJ column and then to hear this. Very disillusioned. It is not the strongly implied criticism of Palin but the hypocrisy. Damn.
Posted by: Former Noonan Fan | Sep 3, 2008 6:28:53 PM
Again... PUNDITS who's words mean NOTHING! And again, how can this be a "mistake"? Sound Engineers lose their jobs over "errors" like this. I know, I am one. There's no way this is real. It's GOT to be staged, or else that Engineer is going to be on the Unemployment line a LOOOOONG time!

Jo - can you spell I-N D-E-N-I-A-L?
McCain may have been a POW who fought in VietNam (one of the dirtiest wars we've ever been involved in) but that makes him no more qualified than Obama, who happens to be way smarter and has a much better temperament. McCain's just trying any kind of gimmick he can think of to win. Palin as VP? Gimme a break. This is just plain stupid thinking. This has nothing to do with her family situation or the so-called "mommy wars." That's totally irrelevant. But thinking of her being one step away from the white house is absurd, scary and ridiculous. (Jesse Jackson's remarks were just a case of sour grapes. Obama reached the heights that Jackson aspired to but couldn't attain.)

Obama is bad. Now the Republicans can bring out all the dirt on him since the Dem's did it to Sarah!! Let's ask him a few questions!!!
If you ask Obama if he is a citizen, has a us passport, a us birth certificate, Obama can probably truthfully answer yes.
The questions that need to be asked:
Are you a Natural Born Citizen?
Was the birth certificate linked to your “Fight the Smears” website a forgery?
How many different birth certificates have you have?
Have you ever been a legal citizen of another country?
Have you ever had any legal name other than BHO?
Were you adopted by your Mother’s second husband, Lolo Soetoro?
Did you use an Indonesian Passport to enter Pakistan in 1981? How long were you there?

Hilarious! The republicans show their true colors once the show cuts to commercial.
It doesn't take a doctorate to know that Sarah Palin was a twilight-zone VP pick by John McCain.
This just shows you that the republicans know deep down it was a bad move, even though they're told to spread the news that the pick, "re-energized the party!"
Gimme a break. Like a moose hunter from a backwater Alaska town can bring the US back from the brink of Iraq and a recession.

Posted by: dmac1 | Sep 3, 2008 7:07:52 PM
The comments made by these two staunch conservatives just cemented what I already knew...McCain's pick of Palin for his running mate effectively sank his bid for the presidency. Kay Bailey Hutchinson would have shored up a ship taking on water. I don't always agree with her policies, but I respect her and believe she would have been a great Vice President. I'm an Independent, and I've been on the fence until now - I'm going to hold my nose and vote for Obama come November 4th!
Posted by: DLH-San Marcos | Sep 3, 2008 7:09:07 PM
Peggy Noonan is a Washington insider and would not like this choice. Frankly, that's what makes her such a great choice.
Posted by: Susan | Sep 3, 2008 7:09:59 PM
John McCain basically secured his party's nomination back in February, so he had about 6 months to ponder and make a descent decision. Then, out of the blue comes this Sarah Palin woman, who obviously was not vetted by the McCain team, and carrying all kinds of baggage. This is the first major decision John McCain has made towards his presidency, and what a disaster! I would have expected something like this from GW, but from a Maverick. He talks like a Maverick, but he really makes Jackass decisions!!!!

"Stay the course" has been the republican mantra since 1980 no matter how many young soldiers die, jobs are shipped overseas or homes are foreclosed. McCain's gonna keep steering the ship into the iceberg whether or not he is elected. I'm praying the ship sinks before the election.

Sorry folks, but ALZHEIMERS and being republican are highly correlated but the DOCTORS will not tell you this truth. Posted by: daddyblue | Sep 3, 2008 7:16:43 PM
If anything, this will reflect poorly on snarky Peggy Noonan, Reagan's former speech writer. Today, she published a column saying mostly nice things about Sarah Palin, then she got busted via hot mike saying not-so-nice things. Can we say hypocrite???
I listened to right-wing radio on the way home today - Peggy, along with Mike Murphy, is on a bunch of crap lists. Talk show hosts and their listeners are ticked off at Peggy and Mike and are strongly defending/supporting Palin.
I must say I agree with the listeners - my vote will remain the same...

Anyone who thinks she cannot handle the job or deal briskly and efficiently with ANY issue, including foreign governments … well, they haven’t met our Sarah. She is not “just a woman”, she is not “just a way to get votes” and if anyone expects her to smile, simper and be sweet – they don’t know Sarah. She is *more than* qualified for the job and the best possible choice McCain could have made.

This is nothing different that what is being said by regular Americans in kitchens, bars, and bustops accross the nation. Gov. Palin is a choice made out of desperation and nothing more than a political gimmick. This country deserves more from their leaders than gimmicks. DON'T TRUST MCCAIN!

More scary is McCain's judgment, or lack thereof. Very sad, sad indeed. No amout of Republican hype can save this candidacy.

She has ZERO experience on national domestic policy. Nor does she have foreign relations experience regarding our national interests. It's terrifying to consider McCain being elected and then dying, and Palin stepping in. It would be a national tragedy.

Sarah has EXECTUTIVE experience *running a government* (something NONE of the other candidates can actually boast, even John McCain as Governor of Alaska and got there by defeating the *incumbent* Republican Governor, who was definitely part of the “old school” and who WAS very much in the pocket of the big oil companies. We in Alaska wanted change – and we got it in the person of Sarah Palin!
Sarah Palin is everything she looks to be and more. Her approval rating as Governor of Alaska has been as high as 95% and is currently leveled out consistently in the upper 80 percentile throughout the state (and in both parties) - the HIGHEST approval rating of ANY sitting Governor.

Must be nice to be a mayor and then governor of a state that is raking in the dollars from oil revenue.
Sarah's challenge? How much money to send each Alaska citizen from their part of the oil company's windfall profits. She's busy trying to get more of that money for Alaska - who knows maybe to feed their separatist movement...
