McCain Camp: Let's Push Back Biden-Palin Match-Up, Too

Share

September 24, 2008 7:04 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Rigel Anderson Report:

The McCain campaign told ABC News on Wednesday that John McCain wants to postpone Friday's presidential debate until Thursday, Oct. 2.

The Arizona senator would like the vice presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden, which is currently scheduled to take place on Thursday, Oct. 2 in St. Louis, Missouri, to be scheduled for a later unspecified date.

The details about what McCain is seeking, which were provided by a McCain aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity, came a few hours after the Republican presidential candidate announced that he was suspending campaigning so he could return to Washington, D.C., to try to forge a consensus on a financial bailout package.

McCain's public call for a debate delay was rebuffed by Barack Obama who joined fellow Democrats in arguing that a president needs to be able to multi-task.

"I believe that we should continue to have the debate," Obama said in Clearwater Florida. "It's my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess."

Can we just postpone the election too? Without debates, I will not have enough information to vote!

THROW IN THE TOWEL, JOHN.

Posted by: Ed from MA | Sep 24, 2008 7:11:15 PM

Give me a break!

If McCain and Palin havent had enough coaching to debate by now, they shouldnt even be running for office.

Stop pretending Friday's debate (on or off) will affect the economic bail out. John McCain is the last person who will be sought for advice about fixing the economy.

Posted by: Mike Denhof | Sep 24, 2008 7:12:31 PM

Either it's April Fools Day or McCain needs to can the boneheaded advisor who either proposed all of this in the first place or who didn't talk him out of the idea if it was his own.

McCAIN HAS A BAIL-OUT PLAN, ALRIGHT!!!

BAIL-OUT OF THE DEBATES.

JOHN: DONCHA KNOW?

McCAIN/PALIN:

NOT READY.

Posted by: Ed from MA | Sep 24, 2008 7:15:39 PM

So this is the real reason why McCain is going to all this trouble. Failin' isn't ready and he wants to cancel the VP debate.

What a chickens!!! They are totally lost. They can't face the American people without talking/offering solutions for our biggest problem, THE ECONOMY STUPID!!!! Are these the same people who are "applying" for the highest office in the land? What a joke :-)

Posted by: ron | Sep 24, 2008 7:21:08 PM

no. there is no need to postpone the debates just so Palin/McCain can get more cramming in for their final exams - they never attended class, anyway, so it wouldn't do a lot of good now.

Posted by: bajacalla | Sep 24, 2008 7:21:38 PM

Let's just change the election day, too. And how about Christmas? Wouldn't it be nicer in January when we have the after Christmas sales?

keep trying McCain...Palin's gonna have to face Biden someday, and you're gonna have to face Barack.

Coward McCain and flailing Palin: a match made in a Disney movie.

ron, somehow I doubt that you're either a democrat in the first place or ever trusted blacks in the second.

Posted by: bajacalla | Sep 24, 2008 7:22:28 PM

This is such a horrible political stunt.
All of a sudden John McCain is so sensitive that he would postone the Presidential debate until Oct 2....Oh wait! The day unnprepared Sarah Palin is to debate Joe Biden? How thoughtful of John McCain...remember the slogan,"Country First" (especially when it's time to dodge any questions)
When will Ms. Palin have her debate? How about Nov.5

Posted by: outraged | Sep 24, 2008 7:22:50 PM

I hope that Senator Obama goes to MS as planned and has a great nationally televised interview with Jim Lehrer- on the economy, and shows the country who has the guts to speak and act like a leader rather than a wimp like McCain. Onwards and forwards, leave ole 'say some crazy crap every day' McCain behind. McCain is unstable, and everyone knows it.

Posted by: Jill | Sep 24, 2008 7:23:45 PM

I can't believe this! All the time and money people spent in Mississippi to put on this debate. Not to mention the locals that prepared for this and then they are discounted. The economy in Mississippi is really awful. If McCain really cared for the people, he would do the debate and look presidential. By not doing the debate, he looks weak and confused. He wants to politicize the debates and he's having his VP doing the same. All Washington needs is his vote. What is he going to do there but sit around and talk about this. He wants free TV time if its televised. He is so transparent. People aren't that dumb we see through this.

Posted by: LF | Sep 24, 2008 7:24:25 PM

Can Ed McMahon be contracted to go to Oxford and yell "Where's Johnny" if McCain doesn't show. They are trying to give Palin more time now too. Maybe she can go back and speak to the investigators in Alaska.

Posted by: bhciapol | Sep 24, 2008 7:25:08 PM

WE THE PEOPLE!!!! The American people deserve to know what their government is going to do with their money. It is time for our "leaders" to grow a "pair" and face us, our fury, and take the heat for the mess they have done. Don't hide cowards. Don't treat me like a child. This reminds me of my husband and I telling our kids to put their shoes on and come with us, without telling them where we're going. I am not a little girl and the government is NOT my father. It is: WE THE PEOPLE. We are the "bosses," no the other way around.

McCain/Palin: Not ready to face the American people, but ready to lead?

Posted by: carl29 | Sep 24, 2008 7:25:09 PM

hey ron,

You're no democrat, you're a racist - why don't you f_u_c_k off back to whatever red rock you crawled out from, and take your yellow candidates with you.

Posted by: Jazk | Sep 24, 2008 7:25:12 PM

Either they are idiots or think the American people are.
They are the laughing stock of the planet that Sarah Palin thinks is only 6000 years old.

This from Politico,com:
The McCain campaign's new urgency about the financial crisis didn't entirely clear his schedule this morning.

My colleague Amie Parnes reports that he made it to his scheduled morning meeting with Lady Lynn de Rothschild, a Clinton backer who recently came out in support of him.

All while Obama was waiting by the phone for a returned call.

Posted by: ron | Sep 24, 2008 7:26:11 PM

McCain is scared to death to let Palin open her mouth. Why? He knows- and he doesn't want us to find out. She's clueless, that's why. We'll find out eventually. She can't do photo-ops forever. McCain should stop being sexist and cut her loose.

Posted by: Joan | Sep 24, 2008 7:26:49 PM

Mccain is known for his ability to forge bi-partisan work. Honestly, if the bail-out bill is not passed by the Senate, it could be a 1000 point drop in DOW on Monday. Only McCain can help the dems and repubs work together. It would be impossible for him to be immersed in the deliberation on senate floor and then debate Obama at the same time in Mississippi. Mccain is the real leader we need.

What is McCain using for brains?

McCain aspires to be the leader of our nation. I think one qualification for the job is to be able to respond quickly, when decisions need to be made and the American people need to be informed. A lot of voters haven't made up their minds, and Friday night is a good time for the candidates to make their positions clear.

By seeking to delay the debate, McCain is once again raising questions in the minds of many voters that he is not prepared to debate Obama and that he simply doesn't have the smarts and the character to do the job.

Posted by: Katia | Sep 24, 2008 7:31:32 PM

Who has put country first?

Obama called McCain this morning to invite him to issue a joint statement meant to put pressure on the government to come up with a better bailout plan for the country. Politically, this would be a stupid move for Obama --- he is now ahead in the polls and in public perceptions of economic leadership so he really didn't need to cast McCain as his equal on economic issues. But he put country first and give McCain a call. He waited hours before McCain got back and indicated his agreement. During the several hours he was waiting for McCain's response, he didn't go public with his joint statement suggestion. He was obviously sincere about putting politics aside and solving the grave financial crisis.

What did McCain do? He got extended a "country first" branch and, instead of taking it to show unity, sincerity and seriousness, he went public with an announcement unilaterally suspending his campaign and pushing for postponement of the debate, all in the name of national interests. With this gimmick, he showed once again all he cares about is political gains.

Shame on you, John McCain!

Posted by: chris | Sep 24, 2008 7:33:57 PM

SO NOW WE KNOW. . . .McCain's NOT ready, and for sure PALIN'S NOT READY !
The only way to DELAY the inevitable, is to come up with a reason. . .and like everything else the GOP does, why not use this serious Economic crisis, to do just that !!!! This is beyond believeable. . . Pathetic !!!! And McCain wants to be POTUS ???? Obama is supposed to be the apprentice. . .not experienced. . .confused. . .whatever!!
Looks to me like McCain's heading in the wrong direction, and certainly NOT LOOKING PRESIDENTIAL !!!! Palin/Biden can debate on Friday. . .that's what VP's are supposed to do. . .step in when needed !!!! Oh wait, she's not ready !!!! Outrageous.

Posted by: BJ | Sep 24, 2008 7:34:10 PM

John McCain is dropping in the polls like the tickers on Wall Street. If McShame truely had felt this way he would have requested everything stop on Monday - not three days later. But guess what John, you can't ask the workd to stop so you can get your bearings! His wealthy buddies are panicking and his solution is to go the Washington so he can escape the debate and campaigning since he and Palin are sinking like stones. However let me be clear that world leaders find Palin beautiful (without much substance) but because of that and her two days of meeting them that she has foreign experience now.
Bono canceled because the GOP let camera's into the meeting (for 29 seconds) and he would not be able to express his true views about her and this stunt.
Now is the TIME for the debate -especially since it will show the people of America exactly how the POTUS would be handling this crisis. If McShame won't come then he is not worthy of leading this country because the real issues won't happen in line in a one, two, three fashion. Country fiorst - bull$h!t. He has only one thing first and that is he thinks he deserves to the POTUS - and in his mind he can justify his lies!
Washington does not need McShame and Obama there to get in the way and make this issue a Photo Op - like Obama said he can do this work form anywhere.

From "I don't know as much about the economy as I should," to "They need me. I'm the savior. Just don't have time to debate."

Please. There's either a tactical reason for doing this, or they know they're going to get their asses kicked and need extra time to cram. Palin won't even be exchanging much with Biden with the 'new' format designed to give them less time to answer a question (she can't really speak to an issue for more than 90 seconds straight). Why does she need more time - she should have plenty of time to memorize a bunch of 90 second responses to questions they expect will be asked.

My jaw will forever be on the floor if this election is even close.

Especially when he, by his own admission, doesn't have any personal expertise on the economy in the first place. Its hamfisted grandstanding.

Biden Dropping Out? Rumor Thrives on Internet
by Judson Berger
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
It’s almost certainly just a case of the telephone game gone high-tech, but there’s an Internet rumor surging through inboxes and discussion boards that Joe Biden will drop out as Barack Obama’s running mate after his Oct. 2 debate with Sarah Palin — and that he’ll be replaced by Hillary Clinton on the Democratic presidential ticket.

The story line goes as follows: John McCain’s selection of Palin has generated so much interest in the Republican ticket that Obama needs to make a radical move to regain momentum. So in the days after the vice presidential candidates debate in Missouri, Biden will bow out, citing “health problems” (Biden underwent surgery in 1988 to repair two brain aneurysms). Enter Clinton.

Furthermore, the story goes, any damage the gaffe-prone Biden does during the debate will be erased by his abrupt exit.

It sounds like a job for Fight the Smears, the Web site the Obama campaign set up to quash damaging Internet rumors. But Fight the Smears hasn’t touched this one, perhaps out of fear that it would only further a wild rumor. The Obama campaign has not commented on it, other than to say that Biden’s medical records will be released soon.

Snopes.com, a site devoted to picking apart online rumors and urban legends, has labeled the status of the claim “undetermined.” Several online discussion boards have been loaded up with denials.

Biden has caused a few hiccups for the Obama campaign. On Monday, he had to issue a clarification after he called one of his own campaign ads “terrible” in an interview with CBS News. He also faced a rebuke from Obama after he spoke out against the government bailout of American International Group last week before Obama was ready to take a position.

On Tuesday, he said that President Franklin Roosevelt had gone on television in 1929 to discuss the Wall Street crash (Herbert Hoover was president in 1929 and the TV hadn’t been invented yet).

At one point, he even said Hillary Clinton might have been a better pick for Obama’s No. 2.

The Republican National Committee has gleefully set up a Biden “gaffe clock” to monitor his rhetorical flubs on the campaign trail.

Nonetheless, Democratic supporters dismiss outright any speculation that he might be dropped from the ticket.

“It’s crazy. … It’s just not gonna happen,” Democratic strategist Bob Beckel said.

Dropping Biden from the ticket would be a throwback to George McGovern’s shocker in 1972, when he replaced running mate Thomas Eagleton after it was learned that Eagleton had undergone electro-shock therapy for depression.

McGovern lost to President Nixon in a landslide, suggesting that seventh-inning lineup changes are not the best strategy for presidential candidates who want to shake things up.

Speaking hypothetically, Beckel said that, if it were to happen, the Democratic National Committee could feasibly call a mini-convention of sorts to confirm a new running mate. He also said “it would be so disruptive” that it would make no sense for Obama to pursue such a change.

Deadlines have passed in some states to send absentee ballots to military personnel and civilian voters overseas — meaning they would have received a ballot already with Biden (and Palin) on their parties’ tickets.

“I doubt it,” said Christopher Hull, presidential scholar and adjunct government professor at Georgetown University, when told of the Biden rumor. “Joe Biden is not that big a liability. Joe Biden was arguably the most experienced candidate in the [Democratic primary] race.”

“Joe Biden, of course, has shot off his mouth and gotten himself in trouble,” he added. “It’s Joe Biden we’re talking about.”

Though Obama lost ground in the polls after McCain tapped Palin to be his running mate, he has recently regained some of that footing. The FOX News Opinion Dynamics Poll on Wednesday gave Obama a 6-point lead, and a Washington Post-ABC News poll put his lead at 9 points. The Gallup daily tracking poll gave the Democrat a 3-point lead.

Hull said he would understand the desire to put Clinton on the ticket if Obama were persistently trailing in the polls.

A recent Associated Press-Yahoo News poll showed former Clinton backers are still reluctant to support Obama. The survey showed just 58 percent of them back him - unchanged since a similar poll in June.

But Hull said he doesn’t sense panic in the Obama ranks.

“I don’t think the Obama campaign was panicking even when the rest of the Democrats were panicking,” he said.

Obama, meanwhile, is standing by his man.

“Joe Biden is also an outstanding public servant and I am very proud of the choice that I made,” he told NBC’s “Today Show” in an interview that aired Tuesday. He said he’s a “great admirer of Senator Clinton’s” and he hopes she remains a “close adviser.”

And Biden is dutifully living up to his role as attack dog.

“Time and again, on the most critical national security issues of our time, John McCain’s judgment has simply been wrong,” the Delaware senator said Wednesday in Cincinnati.

BIden has campaigned all over the country for Obama, hitting long-shot states like Montana as well as key battlegrounds like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and Michigan. He’s largely hitting working-class towns, especially in the Midwest.

Though Snopes.com ruled the validity of the dropout rumor was “undetermined,” the write-up did cast serious doubt on the idea that Obama would dump the Senate veteran who seemed to fill in Obama’s perceived foreign policy gap.

“It’s difficult to definitely prove a negative, but rumors of Biden’s replacement as a VP candidate seem to be nothing more than e-mail chatter at this point,” the site said. “Whatever boost Barack Obama’s campaign might conceivably gain by swapping Joe Biden for Hillary Clinton just a month before the general election might also be more than offset by criticism that such a last-minute switch demonstrated poor decision-making ability and was indicative of a weak and vacillating presidential candidate.”

Yeah right, Ron. Good for you. If this is what made you hate blacks, you were an invitation looking for a place to happen. Go vote for McCain. We don't need you to win, and we certainly don't want you. See ya...wouldn't wanna be ya....

Who does John McCain think that he's fooling with his "Politics First"? NOT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE -- THAT'S FOR DAMN CERTAIN!!!

McCain announced he wants to postpone the election until he can get an accurate count of all his houses and cars

And what is the excuse for the VP debate delay?

I agree with the previous posts:
McCain and Palin are simply not ready for the 2 highest offices!!

WE MUST SAVE OUR COUNTRY NOW!!! DO NOT VOTE FOR THESE TWO!! HOW CAN YOU TRUST THEM!!!??!!

i am honest about my feelings. most keep quiet but vote white when it comes down to it and you know it. you just cant face facts...

So this is part of the ploy. To postpone the VP debate and probably to cancel it altogether.

Senator McCaine is incompetent and has been demonstrating it throughout this campaign, He calls his impulsive kneejerk decisions those of a maverick but they are decisions of an indicisive iltempered not very intelligent man whose blind ambition and reckless behaviour is dangerous to put at the helm of a nuclear power.

The press better expose this man before its too late and not only America but the entire world has to suffer the consequences.

LOL. From all dates they chose the same date of the VP debate, so the VP debate can be rescheduled to an 'unspecified date'. This is the smoking gun that proves this postponement is a trick to delay both presidential and VP debates because McCain and Palin are not ready! WAKE UP AMERICA!
