McCain Honors Flight 93 Victims
September 11, 2008 3:59 PM
ABC News' Jennifer Duck reports: In Shanksville, Pennsylvania this morning Sen McCain spoke at the ceremony for Flight 93 victims' families.
"It's believed that the terrorists on United Flight 93 might have intended to crash the airplane into the United States capitol," McCain said at the ceremony near the crash site. "Hundreds, if not thousands of people at work in that building, when that fateful moment occurred, could have been destroyed along with a beautiful symbol of our freedom. They and possibly I, owe our lives to the passengers who summoned the courage and love necessary to deprive our depraved and hateful enemies their terrible triumph."
McCain talked of great courage and sacrifice for the passengers on Flight 93 "who grasped the gravity of the moment, understood the threat, and decided to fight back at the cost of their lives."
The Arizona Senator and his wife Cindy spoke with the victims' families and Sen McCain laid a wreath at the temporary memorial site which was marked by a fence with a number of first responder hats, patches, and flags attached to it.
The first phase of the permanent memorial in Shanksville will be completed by Sept 11, 2011.
Later today Sen McCain will appear with Sen. Obama at Ground Zero.
After deplaning in Newark, Sen. McCain shared a big hug with Kathleen Ashton who lost her son Tommy in the World Trade Center. McCain called Ashton in 2001 after seeing a TV interview of her explaining Sen. McCain had been Tommy's hero.

God Bless John McCain and all who have sacrificed for our country.

This is the ONLY candidate deserving of the highest office in our country. He has often said he is an imperfect servant, but he is a hero to millions of us....whose ego does not come before his love of this country, like Obama's. Can't admit he was wrong about the serge, can't apoligize for sexist interpretation of his comments whether he meant them or not.
Where is his angry wife at Ground Zero. Glad Cindy is there with Senator McCain. When McCain thanks our servicemen and women he is truly understanding and one of them....Obama is just following him down the line shaking hands with officials. Just watching these guys walk, I know who'd I'd vote for...the arrogant swagger or the beaten and broken hero with a slight limp and arms he can't raise over his head....I salute you John Sydney McCain. Barack Hussein Obama has done NOTHING for his country...only served himself at every opportunity.

McCain's heroism ended when he left Hanoi. McCain's honor ended when he sold his campaign and his soul to Karl Rove.
McCain has proven that he'll sell out America's interests for political gain.
His best days are behind him.
NOSTALGIA IS NOT A SOLUTION.
COUNTRY FIRST. OBAMA/BIDEN 08!

It is fascinating watching the two candidates shaking hands with the NY Police right now and talking to bystanders. Obama is having a lengthy conversation with someone and called a Reggie to give someone a card and they would be calling her/him. Wierd. Can't stand BO. He is walking around still campaigning during this memorial hand shaking.

Gee...let's see who we can trust on the War on Terriorism......say what you will about Bush...if you can all remember back in the recesses of your minds...this country was the victim of an atrocity on our turf, and it hasn't happened since. I never felt so connected to my neighbor, my statesmen, my country as I did AFTER 9/11....if only that kind of love and patriotism could have lasted more than months.

9/11 should be one of the central themes in this election.
Not only because of the continuing global war on terrorism.
But even more so because of the Republican Administration's betrayal of the folks who did the dirty work in the days, weeks and months after the terrorist attacks on the WTC.
Some 40,000 men and women have worked at the Ground Zero site. First, looking for survivors and collecting body parts. And then, for many months, clearing up the the immense amount of debris and dust.
70% of them suffer from illnesses related to Ground Zero. Many have developed aggressive forms of cancer and died an premature death in the past years, their lungs and other vital parts destroyed by the heavily polluted dust and particles at Ground Zero.
At the time of their heroic work at Ground Zero they were told - on behalf of our Republican Administration - that the dusty air was SAFE to breathe. Now thousands of the folks who are heralded as heroes by George W. Bush and John McCain have been thrown out of their health insurancies, while our Government has closed its doors for all those begging for help and assistance.
These heroes are dying, and nobody is caring about them anymore. The Government's hope is, that America will simply forget about them.
The betrayal of the Ground Zero community is one of the greatest scandals in recent American history, and nobody seems to care.
Please, if your care about these people and value the courageous and dirty work they did for America, often as volunteers, get informed on how our Government betrayed these people. Find out yourself what happened to them, what their current desperate situation is, and what a new administration could and should do to help them, starting with fixing their health insurances.
Don't forget our greatest heroes on this tragic day.
And be sure to think about them, before you consider to put these very same "patriotic" Republicans in power again.

Same Candidate party that trashed "community organizers" is calling for all to serve in their communities

oh the irony. oh the ignorance. oh the lies. oh the pretense.
like Keith Olbermann said, noun , verb, 911 (TM), totally turned into a politicizing tool. those of us who lost people WE KNEW, we will always remember.

debra, serge is spelled S-u-r-g-e.
like if you went and stuck your hand in an outlet, you'd feel a surge.
stop trashing people who've done their part in helping this country. community service is no less than serving in the military.

Who cares if you can't stand Obama. Lots of us can't stand you and your constant campaigning and complaining. You should get a life, volunteer at church and really dedicate your life to helping your fellow man. It must suck to be a bitter person like you.

Debra,
I could go a long way into telling you to listen to Barack Obama when he speaks, but you're too dumb and consumed in your hatred to do so. How many times has he said he's not perfect. Does everybody in a country have to serve in the armed forces to be patriotic? It is so sad that even in a day where politics seems to have taken a back seat you are still so tense. The candidates are brave-but you're just pathetic.

It is well and fitting that one candidate or the other might attend and even speak at such a memorial. But well-spoken words written by a speechwriter do not prove the superior fitness of a candidate for public office. Bottom line: it's a fitting tribute, but also a photo-op.

Debra, you just came out of a trash. You smell yacky. Just go away now...

Oh, you mean like Barack handing out campaign literature and cards at Ground Zero? Oh, wait, he's got that D next to his name that everyone in this state (PA) votes for 90% of the time - he must be good and pure, right?
I too lost people on that day, and spent most of the day calling others to make sure I didn't lose more. I will remember, but not with the bitterness of a Keith Olbermann, but with fond memories of loved ones and a strong resolve to maintain the spirit of love and unity we all felt in the days after 9/11, not the bitter partisanship I see now from both sides of the fence.
Bottom line: We are all Americans. Even the likes of Richard Nixon and Tip O'Neill knew this. Despite their politics, it was often that O'Neill, after a long day on the hill, would walk over to the White House and sit with his political rival and discuss what was BEST FOR THE COUNTRY for hours - not how each was better than the other.

Why was John drumming up the drums of war and to invade Iraq on the day of 911! What did he know? Iraq is NOT Afghanistan. And al-Quaeda was NOT in or a part of Iraq. Hell Saddam didn't even trust or like bin Laden because he saw him as a threat to his iron grip on his own people. I think John has some explaining to do just like Biden does about why he was meeting with the head of Pakistaini intelliegence on the morning of 911 (Mahmoud Ahmed, representing Saheed Sheikh) and sending 100,000 to Muhammad Atta on the day of 911. These questions need not only to be answered but also must be demanded to be answered before McCain, Biden or anybody else who knows something about the funding of 911 is permitted to be given executive power in this great country or authority over you and me, don't you think?

John McCain/Palin 2008!
John McCain can be trusted and understands. Obama is a Chicago
Thug. Everyone of his friends are
not trustworthy. He hides everything
birth certificate, rcords from college, etc.

Powerful words from McCain.

It is not necessary to meet the head of state before you become a VP. And why would she meet the head of state as a governor of Alaska. She didn't need foreign policy to become governor. Chinn speaks without thinking what she is saying. Senators have met the head of state but I believe not all of them. Chinn needs to take a lesson in politics or take a different job.

Dean: Your are so right. I was born and raised in Chicago and know city hall from the days of Daley's father although his father was a smarter politician. Obama has ties to city hall and its politicians. There are too many people working at city hall that is not needed. He should lay off at least 1500 to save money and not raise taxes on homeowner's. I listened to Gibson/Palin interview this evening and it was excellent. She gave an answer to every question he asked. I am hoping that John McCain wins the election or this country will be in a disaster.

Ed: I hate to spoil your dream of Obama becoming our president but I am afraid he isn't going to win. Don't get your hopes up for a downfall. People are starting to study him more than before and that's why he's failing in the polls. He is not a celebrity anymore, Palin took over. And the crowds are following her at every campaign. His history making is over.
