Meghan McCain's Defense of Bristol Palin

September 02, 2008 11:54 AM

ABC News' Bret Hovell reports: Meghan McCain, the daughter of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, and purveyor of McCainBlogette.com, a blog about her travels on the campaign trail, has a post this morning about Bristol Palin's pregnancy.

Meghan McCain describes a kinship with other political offspring and talks about the question that "single-handedly changed my life" -- when her father was asked during his 2000 campaign what his reaction would be if Meghan, then 14, got pregnant.

Her post, titled "Daughters," is below in full.

Meghan wrote: "The first political convention I ever attended was when my mom was pregnant with me in 1984 and the Republican Party nominated Ronald Reagan for a second term as president. I have been on political stages and in campaigns since before I could walk or talk.

"If there is one thing I have learned, it is that it is difficult to establish your identity and independence as the son or daughter of a politician. When I was 14 years old, a reporter questioned my father about me having a hypothetical abortion, had I been pregnant at 14. This reporter's question single-handedly changed my life. This story comes up in almost every profile written about me and in almost every interview.

"It's a rough go being the son or daughter of a politician. I have not known Bristol Palin very long, but there is a certain kinship I feel to her as I do other political daughters, such as Chelsea Clinton, Jenna and Barbara Bush and Mary Cheney. You can't fully understand it unless you have lived it. So, I just wanted to let it be known that I support Bristol and the entire Palin family."

Meghan also posted to her blog the day after the New York Times published a story that insinuated her father may have had an improper relationship with a lobbyist named Vicki Iseman. Meghan's post that morning defended her father in similar terms.

Like Mother, Like Daughter? Gov. Palin became pregnant before she married her husband. They eloped and 8 months later their first child was born. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin

Mary, I'm so glad that you are without sin compared to the Palin family who are just the average family in America. Let the one without sin cast the first stone.Obama wants abortion for late term babies who are left to die in the utility closets. Bristol Palin chose life, which is WHAT The BIBLE says.We will never know what Chelsea Clinton did because the media left her alone unlike the double standard against the GOP.
Beck - atleast Sarah Palin went against corruption in her state unlike Obama who joined it and sat in Rev. Wright's church for 20 years. Ever heard about the $45 million investments with terrorist William Ayers? Oh, the hypocracy of the left. They can't stand Palin for who she is. A conservative who is a woman and is successfull! Oh, the scandal! She's a traitor because she's on the other side. I'm sure that if Obama chose her and she was a democrat, the liberals would love her. Amazing!Do NOT underestimate this woman!

Im pretty sure I heard an interview with Obama today in which he said "Families especially daughters are OFF LIMITS" the GOP has not stoped for one second in attacking Obamas family so you people should get your facts straite before you post you you wont look stupid. The media not the dems are putting this story out everywhere.

Mary,
Hypocrite is a funny word for you to be using. When I think hypocrite, I think of someone who claims to be a Christian and even goes so far as to quote scripture, but then supports a candidate/party who support things like abortion. Show me that in the Bible. She may have made a mistake, but it's none of our business. At least she's chosen to keep the baby.

It's not "good" for a 17 year old unmarried child to be pregnant. It's not "smart" that she's choosing to keep the baby. It's her choice, that's all and that is all that other women are asking of the Republican party. Let the woman have the right to choose, even if they're a child, its not a decision for lawmakers, its a personal choice. The fuss the Republican's made of Murphy Brown being a single mother on a sitcom seems to have gone away. They were ready to crucify the character, now I guess they'd applaud her.

How could MCCain pick this woman as his vice? I mean this has just made it clear to me who in the republican party I can look up to. She is not qualified at all and it is scary . I mean look at her involvement in AIP, trooper gate etc. She needs to pay for her carryon baggage.

Is Sarah Palin blaming the federal government for her daughters pregnancy because we have not spent enough money on abstinence programs? Now that's demeaning to parents!

Meghan -
Your Daddy's "soul-mate" is the one who trotted out her 5-months pregnant daughter and threw her under the bus. Preach your holier than thou crap to her.

I'll ask the question I have asked at ever comment board for months...would someone please name one thing, other than win a popularity contest or write a book about himself, that Barack Obama has done? I went to the congressional records and looked up his contributions...nothing much there, unless you're interested in black history month type stuff...no disrespect intended but that ain't much. Who has he stood up against in his quest for change? I've been here living in Chicago, he waged no battles here, he bucked no systems here, he brought change naught. There doesn't seem to be any there there. Please someone, anyone, elucidate us with some hitherto unknown achievement by this admittedly, charismatic fellow. Signed, Waiting in Chicago

Makes me feel better that all of the liberal answers on here seem to come from dumb people. Dumb people tend to be all talk and then forget to vote.

I will not comment on the pregancy of a 17 year old woman. Whatever decision she makes is right for her and not my business.

The issue for voters is not the very personal problems being faced by the Palin family. The real problem is that we don't know Palin at all, and apparently neither does McCain. His decision to go along with this candidate speaks worlds about McCain's poor judgment. Palin has not been thoroughly vetted and this is a serious error for McCain to have made. The Palin ploy is a hard shift to the extreme right of the Republican Party Is this the best they could do-- the lightweight, anti-choice, creationist, anti-environment, pro-oil candidate who won her limited fame on right-wing talk shows? In these uncertain times following 8 years of gross mismanagement by Bush/Cheney, Palin and McCain must be rejected if the United States of America is to retain its economic strength, and its self-respect in the world at large.

who cares. big deal. a teenager with hormones flowing got knocked up. thats what teenagers do sometimes. lets get back to the RNC.

It's funny how the Republican talk about moral, conservative values then forsake those values for the sake of convenience. Remember everyone: If this happened to one of Sen. Obama's daughters, the republicans would have jumped on this like white on rice! Just because Sen. Obama says this should be off limits doesn't mean it should be. This is hypocrisy at it's worst and any voter shouldn't "back off" on this in the least.

well, i think it is very nice that meghan mc cain is defending bristol pallin.... very generous... but what i think is very interesting is how the mc cain's treat their own family members... how come her so called sister... the daughter cindy mc cain adopted from mother teresa's orphanage is nowhere in the pictures in people magazine, etc.... is she not really a member of the family.. why are they hiding her... how about john mc cain's three children from his first marriage, where are they on the campaign trail... why is meghan the only one in public view, is cindy going to cut off her pakistani daughter from any of her inheritance as she did from her own half sisters.... so much for family values in the mccain family... if this girl is adopted by your family and is in fact your sister, where is she, and why are you not as proud of her as you are of bristol pallin?

Palin: They say I'm young and we just met
One day is hardly time to vet
McCain: Well I don't know if all that's true
'Cause you got me, and baby I got you

McCain: Babe
BOTH: I got you babe
I got you babe

ABC, why the hell do you have this picture of Bristol up here, this is ridiculous, and you know it.

Posted by: Kim | Sep 2, 2008 12:41:36 PM

What really bugs me about all this is the fact that yes, had this been Chelsey Clinton or one of Obama's daughters being pregnant at 17, the GOP would have been all over that like a bad, bad rash. Now that it's one of their own - how sweet. Obama showed what class he had when he declared Palin's family problems OFF LIMITS. Does anybody really believe McCain would have done the same? Not with Karl Rove on his campaign staff!

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE REPUBLICAN "SHOTGUN WEDDING" that is going to be coming up between Bristol and Levi. You know the "boy" that doesn't want to have any kids?

Gee, I sure hope that he doesn't want to get a job in Alaska state government...

Because if he messes up with her daughter, Sarah Palin will have him fired!!!!

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Jane,
It is NOT the Dems and liberals who slandered and demonized Hillary. It is the holier-than-thou Republicans and their media minions like Flush Limbaugh and Yawn Insanity, and it started at least as far back as her input on healthcare and her book, "It Takes a Village." It is a great book about how we should all work together to improve the lives of our children and other people's children. I did not vote for Hillary, but appreciate her strong commitment and toughness over the years. Heck, she was even bashed for staying WITH Bill after his public humiliation of her, fooling around with Monica. A Republican would have been admired, but not Hillary. Democrats are not trying to tear Sarah Palin apart, at least not the thinking ones who feel only sympathy with Bristol. I question her mom's hanging Bristol out in the public eye. It SHOULD have stayed in the Palin family. NO for her as VP.
