Obama Blasts McCain on Immigration Reform
September 10, 2008 9:13 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Speaking before the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Gala, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., blasted Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for not including comprehensive immigration reform in his party’s platform.
“And when it came time to write his party’s platform, comprehensive reform never made it in,” Obama said before the institution’s annual gala in Washington, D.C. “So, you’ve got to ask yourself: if Sen. McCain won’t stand up to opponents of reform at his own convention, how can you trust him to stand up for change in Washington?”
Obama said that he admired it when McCain had bucked his party on immigration reform in the past, but said that was a stance McCain walked away from when running for president.
“When he was running for his party’s nomination, he abandoned his stance, and said he wouldn’t even support his own legislation if it came up for a vote,” Obama said to the audience. “Well, I don’t know about you, but I think it’s time for a president who won’t walk away from comprehensive immigration reform when it becomes politically unpopular.”
Wooing the key demographic, Obama told the crowd that he’s not taking one single Hispanic vote for granted this election, referencing John Kerry’s close loss in New Mexico in 2004.
“I need you. I need you to win,” Obama said in closing.
Obama will take his campaign west next week -- campaigning in Colorado on Monday.

Only elect hard-line anti-illegal immigrant politicians. Illegal Immigration is lowering wages and stealing jobs from legal Americans. This major issue is costing taxpayers too much. Higher property taxes, free health care, education and a multitude of government welfare programs Just take a look at 'Sanctuary City' California's financial demise. $ 11. billion dollars is attributed to the illegal immigrant welfare, who have drained the states funds.
If we enact the Federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) enforcement only law. Millions of illegal aliens will leave by self-deportation. ATTRITION! No job, they will leave of their own accord. Only anti-American groups and Liberal-Democrat-Socialists are stopping this law. ASK THEM WHY?

IF WE DON'T STOP IT NOW, THEY WILL KEEP COMING..

So Norman, which should we believe? The website or the words coming directly from McCain's mouth? Just a question...
Posted by: Craig | Sep 10, 2008 9:35:27 PM
When Obama takes McCain's words out of context, he's out to destroy McCain and Palin. When someone does the same to him, he says they are dividing America. Obama hasn't done a thing to change America and he keeps yelling change.

Thank you ABC for posting something regarding an ACTUAL issue. While the Republicans are engaged in their smear and destroy, non-issue, non-American campaign tactics - friends are having to lay off workers due to the economy. Our concern is their ability to find new employment, pay for Cobra healthcare, gas and care for their families while we watch the McCain campaign loose all sense of reality over an old southern saying about lipstick. Perhaps ABC if you will focus on the issues and not nonsense.

Citizenship for Immigrants - McCain supported a bill with his own name on it allowing illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. Now McCain opposes his own bill.
Immigration Act - McCain cosponsored a Development Relief and Education Aliens Minor Act for immigrants. Now he opposes it

This is a bad issue for Obama to bring up in this campaign. He is in deep despair if he's trying to use this issue to gain votes. McCain actually learned something when he tried to pass his comprehensive immigration reform bill. He learned that we don't trust Washington. Secure the borders first and then worry about reform. Obama is an open borders guy who could care less about our national security. Now I ask you who would you rather have in the Oval Office?
Posted by: Tom | Sep 10, 2008 9:50:34 PM
I wish that people would just think back 2 years. We did have alot of these problem, high gas and food price, etc.
When the Dems. took over two years ago, they have done everything they could to make Bush and the Repub. look bad. They will not let bills be heard if they are from Repub. It has been very well planned. They honestly believe that the American people are stupid. Are We?
Posted by: Barbara | Sep 10, 2008 10:00:08 PM
Tom, that's why its referred to as a "comprehensive" plan. That would include securing the borders.
Me? I trust Senator Obama.

Tom - Obama IS for securing our borders and that is part of his immigration policy.
Posted by: Paige | Sep 10, 2008 10:11:19 PM
Barbara - The Republicans did not need any help from the Democrats to "look bad". They abused their power and the Constitution all on their own.

Don't you just love that whole "preacher-man" way of talking Obama has adopted? He thinks it makes him look more average Joe if he drops the Ns' from words- huntin'... walkin'. Why is he trying to sound like an old preacher man from the south because 1)he grew up abroad and in Hawaii so he sounds like a joke 2)I don't see how the old time southern preacher voice is attractive to factory-workin' white women.
Posted by: Who? | Sep 10, 2008 10:14:06 PM
old time southern preacher voice?
LOL geez folks, can we just stay on the issues?!
I heard Sean Hannity make a comment yesterday how Senator Obama was intent on tearing down Sarah Palin, which of course is not true. When it came to her family, Senator Obama was the one to say her kids and family were off limits.
The hypocrisy of Hannity is over the top. He has been attacking Senator Obama for the last 20 months, which could be defined as character assasination, as he tears Obama down every day. Sounds like Hannity is stepping back in his own shyt.
Posted by: bc46 | Sep 10, 2008 10:19:18 PM
Lately Obama seems to be drifting from one issue to another - often revising his remarks in an attempt to gain political traction. This tactic shows that his campaign has no central conviction, but appears to be making up policies based upon polling results. Truth is that Obama is still largely unknown, untested, and very inexperienced - not the qualifications required for the US presidency. Behind the rhetoric, there is no substance!
Posted by: Phil | Sep 10, 2008 10:22:34 PM
He's right. McCain is pro-amnesty - and has been a major backer for a very long time, a major sponsor - but he made no attempt to mention or put that anywhere in the Republican platform. Why not? Would he prefer to keep this part of his political agenda quiet? I don't like either candidate on this issue - I'm extremely anti-amnesty of any kind, under any name, and they're both pro - but hiding your positions, letting it slide by and hoping the voters don't notice is not honest.

What makes John McCain a 'maverick'?
Is it the way he buckled to the RIGHT on immigration, now saying he wouldn't even vote for his own bill?
Is it for saying the Bush tax cuts for the rich that were 'unconscienceable' when they were passed are now a good idea.
Is it for hiring the people he once called the 'agents of intolerance' to spread slander about Barack Obama?
Is it for protecting the big pharma companies, saying that America should remain the ONLY industrialized country in the world that does not use its own buying power to get the wholesale price?
Is it for saying 'screw you' to Lilly Ledbetter and all working women, saying that women like Lilly Ledbetter who can prove they were intentionally paid less money because they are female: They should 'work harder'.
Is it for protecting the indecent system in this country where you can die of cancer without treatment if you don't have insurance?
Or is it for protecting the indecent system where the middle class can face bankruptcy simply because they got sick?
Could it be because the man is completely deaf, dumb and blind to the fact that the middle class wages have gone NOWHERE, while the cost of feeding your family, driving to work, providing a home has gone higher and higher?

I used to like mccain because he promised to run an honorable campaign. No longer. He has resorted to the lowest of the low mudslinging, distortions, and lies.
I thought we had a chance of actually having an election based on the real issues. Nope.
Since it really appears to me that McCain is the far worse of the two in the mudslinging -- I'm going to vote Obama.
Posted by: honorable | Sep 10, 2008 10:35:31 PM
A maverick is a person who is unpredictable. McCain is certainly unpredictable --- he's flip flopped on just about every issue imaginable. I don't think this is what I want in a president.
Posted by: mavrick | Sep 10, 2008 10:36:45 PM
A maverick is a person who calls chelsea clinton (who was just a teenager) ugly in public then pretends to get upset at the use of the phrase "lipstick on a pig" which he himself used to refer to Hillary's policies only a few months ago.
Maybe maverick means hypocrite.
Posted by: mavrick2 | Sep 10, 2008 10:39:20 PM
No, I think a maverick is a person who has 7 lobbyists running his campaign.
McCain is in the pocket of the special interests.

If Obama were to win a sizeable chunk of Hispanic voters, he might change his tune on the immigration thingy. He's such a wimp, and he would be afraid to irritate them. There is nothing he says that isn't up for revision once he knows who he owes something to. He's always trying to play catch-up, juggling his lil groups of identities. This is Obama. You can put lipstick on him, but he's still Obama.
Posted by: Kitty | Sep 10, 2008 10:50:32 PM
The thing about republicans is that you can put lipstick on them -- but they are still afraid of smart black men.
Stop living in the 1930s. The republican party is completely corrupt and has been slowly dumping our country into the crapper (did anyone see Lehman bros today... lost 4 billion $ ... there is some great republican management of the markets! ). McCain's policies are exactly the same as bush's policies. He's proud of it too, and he has bragged about it. Of course all of a sudden he like the word "change", but if he is elected, basically things will stay the same.. and down down down we go until we are a third world country.
Vote Obama -- the man will stop the republican railroad.

Brittanicus as usual spreading his lies in every opportunity he has. You should see what your republican politicians, the real criminals are doing to the country. Look at the new scandal with Bush appointees doing favors for big oil companies in exchange for sex, drugs, and money. Unreal, right in front of Bush's eyes. Brittanicus you form part of the racist, nativist organization FAIR. Their own founders have been caught "expressing" their xenophobic views in public to people like you. So instead of demonizing immigrants with your lies take a look at your politicians you idiot. Copy and paste articles from FAIR here just shows how shallow your reasoning is.
Posted by: Aston | Sep 10, 2008 10:56:50 PM
The thing about McCain's party --- is that they are SO GOOD at telling complete lies. They just make stuff up and repeat it over and over until someone starts to think it is true.
The republican lies we have all suffered, that have led us into disaster.
McCain is following suit. Just making up stupid crap and throwing at Obama. If he really felt secure with his positions on the issues he would argue about issues --- not make up crap like sex ed for kindergarten.
Not to mention the lies like "I opposed the bridge" when in fact they supported it.

if there was some IQ test for voting, I'm sure bush would not be in office (actually there should be an IQ test to be president too!).
In a test about the current state of the world, the country, and the economy, the people who watched FoX (faux) news scored lower than people who got their news from ANY other source.
I rest my case.

But this time I'm not going to fall for any more of the republican lies and deception. I'm going to vote Obama.
You know, it seems to be the SAME people who made these passionate angry arguments against Kerry in 04 that seem to be fighting against Obama now. Any after the election 04, it turned out that most of what they said was just made up hogwash -- but it stuck til after the election. So don't be fooled this time like I was last time. Hi I'm chelsea clinton and I'm approving this message.
John McCain told some really nasty off color jokes about me when I was 17 years old and just an awkward teenager. Is this the kind of president we want, one who will take dishonorable pot shots at school-girls?
Now McCain is slinging mud at Obama. If he were an honorable man he would talk about the real issues, but he doesn't. Because his policies stink and everyone knows it. His one hope to win the election is just to throw more mud.
... and I, chelsea clinton, know more than anyone, how much mud McCain can sling.

Finally, somebody who worked on earmark issue with both McCain and Obama set record right:
Mrs. Palin also killed the infamous Bridge to Nowhere in her own state. Yes, she once supported the project: But after witnessing the problems created by earmarks for her state and for the nation's budget, she did what others like me have done: She changed her position and saved taxpayers millions. Even the Alaska Democratic Party credits her with killing the bridge.
When the Senate had its chance to stop the Bridge to Nowhere and transfer the money to Katrina rebuilding, Messrs. Obama and Biden voted for the $223 million earmark, siding with the old boys' club in the Senate. And to date, they still have not publicly renounced their support for the infamous earmark.

I'm Cindy McCain and I have tons of money. My outfit for the RNC cost 300,000$.
When John Kerry ran for president and he was married to a multi-millionaire, all the republicans took shots at him for marrying a filthy rich woman. I wonder why they are not attacking John McCain now. Maybe because they are all hypocrites.

Mrs. Palin cut Alaska's federal earmark requests in half last year, one of the strongest moves against earmarks by any governor. It took real leadership to buck Alaska's decades-long earmark addiction.
Mr. Obama delivered over $100 million in earmarks to Illinois last year and has requested nearly a billion dollars in pet projects since 2005. His running mate, Joe Biden, is still indulging in earmarks, securing over $90 million worth this year.

It's amazing - the Bush regime is spying on you, harassing you at airports, rendering your neighbors to Syria for torture, starting wars based on lies, not to mention rising unemployment and mortgage foreclosures…and yet there are still people thinking about voting for McSame. How could they not get this simple message: Repubs Don’t Care About You! This goes double for the pro-McSame posters on this blog, including the trolls.
It’s even on record: they call their own fundamentalist base morons for donating money. Yet they’re out there again waving their flags, hating gays and immigrants. Are they so terrified that whites won’t be a majority soon? Ask yourself, What are they willing to do to prevent that from happening?
Posted by: Arturo Sclerosis | Sep 10, 2008 11:16:10 PM
Amy seems to claim that Palin is somehow anti-earmark these days.
In fact, Alaska is #1 in the country for earmark spending!
ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 1 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog group.
Amy's claim is simply a lie. So is Palin's claim --- she opposed the bridge only after it was clear that it was going nowhere. (so to speak).
Posted by: amyisaliar | Sep 10, 2008 11:17:59 PM
From AP Wire. RE: Palin
As Alaska governor, she sought and obtained hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks for the state, and as mayor of Wasilla, she hired lobbyist and former Stevens staffer Steve Silver to steer federal money to her town.
Some of her earmark projects when she served as mayor from 1996 to 2002 even landed on McCain's list of questionable congressional pork barrel spending.
Posted by: amyisaliar | Sep 10, 2008 11:20:51 PM
From Newsday:
Under Palin's leadership, Alaska this year asked for almost $300 per person in requests for pet projects. That's more than any other state received, per person, from Congress for the current budget year. Other states got just $34 worth of local projects per person this year, on average, according to Citizens Against Government Waste, a Washington-based watchdog group.

What are you talking about dumbocrats. Pelosi and Hillary spent years trying to find a way to give illegal immigrants social security-free healthcare-and visas- funded by US TAXPAYERS! Its sickening! They were trying to justify the whole thing by saying illegals pay taxes just like the rest of us. My answer to that is: Immigrants take your tax penneys and get the hell out of MY country. Illegals ARE criminals. Please vote McCain/Palin, they will send the wetbacks_packing.

McCain keeps saying "We are winning in Iraq". Against who? The enemy is al-quaida. Al-quaida was never there before we invaded. Sure, they've been kicked out of iraq again, but that doesn't mean we are beating them. It just means they have moved somewhere else --- pakistan for now. And our army is completely tied up in Iraq that we can't go after bin-Laden.
No, the best we can do in Iraq is to get out as quickly as we can. "Winning" is when we destroy al-quaida. We are no closer to doing that than we were 8 years ago. Our little detour in Iraq was an oil-driven distraction.

Charlie Gibson will do a nice little bio-piece and show some pretty little scenes in Alaska and then get a somewhat "serious" look on his face and lob a few questions at her that he thinks are passable enough not to be criticized as a lame journalist and that will be it. He will not be tough and scrutinize her record, her views, he will provide her with the opportunity to finesse concerns voters have and most of all, he will NOT challenge her on the issues that have caused this country to be in the worst shape on so many level in decades. The Republican party has destroyed the fundamentals of the country and Gibson, in no way will he challenge Palin to account for what HER party has caused.

The more Obama forces this issue, the more voters he'll alienate himself from.
Most folks believe in illegal immigrants on faster track to citizenship as much as in affirmative action.
We cannot talk about immigration reform without discussing taxes - Do not be fooled by Dems’ promises not to raise taxes on the middle class. A tax increase on businesses means an indirect tax increase on all of us on everything we buy (food, shelter, groceries, gasoline…), and it is a guarantee for immediate job losses as businesses will have to be forced to close down or retain fewer workers.
The various income taxes American individuals (federal + state + payroll up to over 57%) and businesses (federal + state up to 45%) pay are already the highest in the world and Dems want to increase them so that the competitiveness of US corporations globally will be further reduced and our individual financial freedom further restricted. I see US citizens with skills and money consistently renounce their US citizenships and non-US people with skills or money turn down green cards and US jobs for tax reasons. Dems’ wealth redistribution socialist policies are guaranteed formulas to attract un-skilled poor immigrants and drive out the highly-skilled rich who would contribute to creating jobs and propel our economy forward.

McCains Identity Theft/Fraud Policy:
"Do a proper accounting of all social security numbers used and attained illegally, rectifying the accounts and alerting those whose identity had been compromised. "
While it's certainly EXTREMEMLY important to notify the millions of innocent victims of identity theft, this policy does not go nearly far enough.
These illegal aliens using fraudulent ID have clearly demonstrated, through their dishonest actions, that they have no claim whatsoever to the welcome mat extended to legal and honest immigrants.

Just another jester from the deceiving appeaser to get votes and move one step closer to his socialist dream. He realizes he can no longer woo all the women to his feet so he needs to make up the relocated votes. Nothing but hot air and no substance.

"Now I ask you who would you rather have in the Oval Office"?
hummmm, think I'll take the young black guy that will help put this country back on track, besides he's for us veterans. Elmer Fudd McCain voted against veterans, so he's toast IMO.

If elected John McCain will kick Sarah into the corner and send her off to attend funerals.Thats fine, but if he should happen to die in office then we have to deal with her. This does not bode well. Putin would make hash of her in a heartbeat.
As for the illegal immigrants it will be up to the states and the people to do the job, neither candidate will do a thing.
Keep in mind McCain is running for pres not Palin. Watch his body language,Why does he always stand with fists balled or playing with his ring finger? Interesting.....body language can tell a lot about a person.
I was told by a really high up executive in the auto industry about 15 yrs ago that the plan was to bring down the american wages so that globel trade would equalize. I see he was right. I see the plan being played out.All they have to do is stonewall the American peoples resistance to it. They are doing a good job.

Everybody knows what Romney said about McCain during the debate on immigration in the primaries. McCain has run away from the legislation he has sponsored himself as senator by voting against it when he became candidate. That is the real McFlip-McFlop who will do anything and say anything to get elected, the unMaverik McSame. Obama is helping us to remember that McSame cannot make things-up, he has lost his moral authority in the immigration debate.

obama on Illegal immigration: In a March 2004 questionnaire, Obama was asked if the government should "crack down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants." He replied "Oppose." In a Jan. 31, 2008, televised debate, he said that "we do have to crack down on those employers that are taking advantage of the situation."
What will he stand for tomorrow?

This has nothing to do with this topic, but is it true that Biden and Obama voted for the bridge to nowhere and voted against redirecting those funds to the viticims of hurricane katrina? If its true please explain their reasoning, they may have lost my vote with this while saying palin didnt kill the bill.

Truth
Mark Halperin, on Anderson Cooper 360, September 9, from Talking Points Memo:
"AC: Mark, has there ever been a vice presidential candidate who has yet to talk to the press at this point in the race?
MH: No. And it's another thing I get that I'm embarrassed about our profession for. She should be held more accountable for that. The "bridge to nowhere" thing is outrageous. And if you press them on that, they falter because they know they can't defend what they're saying. They're saying it on the stump, as a core part of their message. It's in their advertising. I'm not saying the press should be out to get John McCain and Sarah Palin. But if a core part of their message is something that every journalist...journalism organization in the country has looked at and says it's demonstrably false, again, we're not doing our jobs if we just treat this as one of many things that's happening."

Republicans and their white-supremacy "grass roots" inbred followers are on the wrong side of history. They are the ones who needs to be rounded up, arrested and prosecuted, just like the Nazis.

"Only elect hard-line anti-illegal immigrant politicians. Illegal Immigration is lowering wages and stealing jobs from legal Americans."
So if the American folks elect soft-line anti-illegal immigrant politicians as they have done so far in the primaries and if McCain wins with a large Democratic congress following a soft line on immigration would you say that Americans want shamnesty? I would.
Posted by: George | Sep 11, 2008 8:26:12 AM
Norman:
The message is clear. Both McCain and Obama are for shamnesty as FAIR and other groups have reiterated. The voters cannot claim they did not know. American people claiming that they are against increased or same levels of immigration after they vote for McCain or Obama and a Dem Congress is similar to a capital murderer on Texas Death Row claiming that he was not aware of the Texas Death Penalty. As a public servant if you vote this group in, I have to push for shamnesty and increased immigration lies and spins from anti-immigrant groups such as FAIR and CIS not withstanding. Their claiming that the American people did not mean to support shamnesty after electing McCain and a strengthened Dem Congress is similar to liberal activists trying to absolve a murderer on death row of his crimes and trying to get him pardoned.

I keep hearing republicans complaining about a do nothing congress. Legislature is being passed by the House, it only requires a simple majority to pass a bill there. In the Senate it takes a super majority of 60 votes to cut off debate on any bill, before that bill can be voted upon. The republican Senate has had a record number of filibusters requiring that super majority to cut off debate. So don't blame the Democrats it is the republican obstructionist.
