Obama Camp: It's not 1988

Share

September 04, 2008 5:48 PM

ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: A top Obama advisor said Thursday that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made a cultural connection when she spoke to the Republican National Convention Wednesday night, effective politics for the Republican Party. Robert Gibbs argued, however, that unlike 20 years ago when the GOP successfully used hot-button cultural issues to defeat Michael Dukakis, the election will turn on issues like the economy and health care.

"I don't think it's 1988. Well, I know it's not 1988," Gibbs said.

"I don't think we're in the same type of political environment. I think people understand that we have far bigger problems that we have to get to. I don't doubt that there's a cultural connection for some voters with Governor Palin or Senator McCain….but I think in this election you have to make more than just a cultural connection. I think you have to have an answer, and a plan for ways in which you want to help voters get back up on their feet, and how you want to help them create jobs."

Gibbs also said that McCain selected Palin as his running mate primarily to excite the Republican Party's conservative base and that her convention speech helped shore up support with conservatives who may be a bit suspicious of McCain. "I think her speech played well inside the hall last night. I think the jury is definitely still out on whether it plays -- how it plays in a lot of suburban counties throughout the country where we think swing voters will ultimately decide this election."

Gibbs suggested that in selecting Palin the McCain campaign has sought to open a new battle front along cultural lines -- a fight the campaign has always wanted to wage.

"I think that's always been the game plan. I don't think that that's a development only as of a discussion at a deck in Sedona in picking her. I think for a long time this is an argument that (the McCain camp has) wanted to set up."

The 1988 reference is intended to invoke the year in which former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, the Democratic presidential nominee, saw a large lead over George H.W. Bush evaporate after Republicans thumped him with signs and symbols that made him look weak and unpatrioritic. He was slammed for vetoing a bill that would require school children to recite the pledge of allegiance, he was bashed for supporting a prison furlough program that resulted in the release of a convicted murder, Willie Horton, who committed rape after being set free and he was labeled as elite and out of touch.

Noting that Republican Convention speakers like Gov. Palin and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani used their remarks to paint Obama as unfit to be president and elite and out of touch, Gibbs expressed his belief that swing voters want more than traditional attack politics. Voters want to hear about the economy instead, said Gibbs.

"This convention has missed an opportunity for McCain to get his economic voice."

Gibbs made his remarks at a Christian Science Monitor briefing with reporters in St. Paul, MN.

McCain on Education:
"The worse our education is, the better chances I have to get elected. For this reason, I will cut all school funding!"

It sure is 1988 - and he's Barack Dukakis. UNELECTABLE!!

Posted by: Foodforthought | Sep 4, 2008 6:04:49 PM

Republicans don't have a plan. Thats why they attack. If they had a plan they should outline it.

Earlier today Charlie Gibson had an interview with John McCain. Not one hard, or revealing question.

Hey ABC, maybe it is time for you to hire Jon Stewart to do your evening news. He seems to be the only one asking questions:

CNN now playing the race card, Jack Cafferty is disgusting. He is actually insinuating that whites are racist if they dont vote Obama. The media has gone beyond their already biased Obama praise, and McCain sabotage. This is CRIMINAL. Wolf Cambell, Chris Mathews etc agents for Obama.

Posted by: joseph | Sep 4, 2008 6:19:55 PM

Of course it's not 1988. Back then, the hit piece on President Bush perpetrated by Dan Blather and CBS, ZerObama's ties to Ayers, Wright and Rezko and the efforts to smear Sarah Palin would be kept very conveniently under wraps. We should be really greatful to Al Bore for "inventing the internet"

Cafferty, has ALWAYS been in the tank for NoBama, even in the primaries. He completely insulted and ripped Hillary on a daily basis. I dont watch CNN anymore, mainly, because they are so biased toward Obama. I can't stand Donna Brazille...talk about an idiot!

Cnn, like the DemWits, don't know how to handle Palin......and now, its killing them because the tide is turning to the Republicans and their "boy" Obama is continuing to flip flop all over the place. Just today, he is praising the surge! What is this all about...remember how he was completely against it? McCain/Palin are the ONLY choice for the White House this year. CBS has them tied at 42%. This is BEFORE the effects of Palin's speech. So long, DemWits....we'll see you in another 4 yrs!

Okay folks,

Since her little town white daughter got pregnant teenage pregnancy is cool.

You all need to start saying how it's just fine to have an extra-marital affair just like a teenage daughter if you're a small town white girl.

After watching Sarah Palin last night, this Democrat has changed her mind and will be voting for McCain/Palin in November. I can't take the lies of Obama anymore and how unfairly they treated Hillary and now are treating Palin. Obama's campaign is all about sexism...which is now blowing up in their faces!

I hate you liberal scumbags!

Posted by: tina | Sep 4, 2008 6:49:18 PM

Tina,

Obama and Biden had nothing to do with the media's idiotic treatment of Palin. But who cares about details, right? I suppose the real issues are meaningless, and that this really just some fun reality TV show about personalities. What an awful and pathetic way to choose the leaders of the most powerful nation in the world.

Posted by: JohnC | Sep 4, 2008 6:50:15 PM

So Tina thinks her critics are "liberal scumbags." (1) Thanks for that perceptive and intelligent response. (2) Anyone using that kind of language wasn't going to vote for Obama or Hillary anyway. Just another phony "convert."

Posted by: JohnC | Sep 4, 2008 6:52:14 PM

Foodforthought.....

Contrary to what the DemWits believe, Obama will NOT win in November. He is already falling in the polls while McCain is gaining. Obama is only 13 projected electoral votes ahead of McCain and the swing states are now leaning to McCain. Obama is all "used" up. The media "darling" has let down the media and America. Remember, the GOP still has surpises up their sleeves. They mysterious tape of Michelle will be out for all to see in October. Obama, now flip flopped on the surge, among many other issues. The evangelicals and catholics are now behind McCain. Obama, does have the African American vote, not because they beleive in the issues, but mainly because he is a black man. Hang in there, don't give up. McCain/Palin is are headed to the White House.

Sorry about your job loss......hang tough!

Obama wants to go back to 1976. His idols are Louis Farakhan, Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Jimmy Carter.

Can anyone say: G-a-s V-o-u-c-h-e-r-s.

If on the off chance Obama does get into office, I was thinking of opening up a Burkha store. But Obama's high tax hikes would run me out of business. Oh well.
I won't be alone, we'll all be screwed.

Posted by: S Adams | Sep 4, 2008 6:57:50 PM

Tina,

I agree to a certain extent. I don't think Obama was responsible for the media coverage, but I also dont think he tried to thwart the media either. Obama and the media put Hillary thru hell. Obama was, and I use that in the past tense, the media "darling". However, now, a NEW star is on the horizon, and her name is Sarah Palin.....her star will shine all the way to the White House!

Obama: "Axeeelroood, McCain and Palin are making me look bad"

Axelrod:"Calm down Barry this is what you are going to do, tell everyone to leave Palin's family alone and I will send out our bloggers to make up rumors about her. I want you to call Foxnews and tell O'Reilly you want to go on his show."

Obama:"What?! They will embarrass me and ask questions I don't know. They won't let me use my teleprompter."

Axelrod:"You'll be fine Barry, whatever they ask you, just tell them the exact opposite of what you believe and what you've been saying. Just tell them you think the surge worked. They'll eat it up."

Posted by: S Adams | Sep 4, 2008 7:10:41 PM

I have been a Republican my entire life. My dad was too. It just made sense he'd say.

I never even thought about it. As long as I could work and put food on the table, the Republicans were doing right by me.

Then just the other day my son, who just graduated college a few years ago explained a few things to me.

First, he pointed out that the savings I used to put him through college came from a time that a Democrat was in office.

Next he explained to me that the car I still call new was already 10 years old.

He then explained that the hard times my family has been going through these last 5 years was in stark contrast to our family situation 10 years ago and before.

We stopped eating out about 6 years ago. We would go out once a week since I can remember but my son pointed out that we stopped doing that for years.

My son also explained that my former job paid more than my current two jobs pay today. He told me that when I was a union worker, I had a better salary and medical benefits. I have no benefits now and my wife recently passed away, leaving us broke. I now live with my son and his wife.

I also thought that the war was a good idea too. It showed the world how powerful we were.

As my son explained things to me, I was very proud of how smart he has become. I also began to feel very foolish.

I had finally realized that politics was a dangerous thing for a person like me, who never really stopped to think or question where my good life really came from.

I lost all that I hold dear, except for my son, and now I realize it was because I was never really thinking about who I was truly in debt for the prosperity of my life.

I lost a great job to overseas outsourcing, my wife to poor medical coverage. I can't afford a more economical car and can't fill the gas tank in my old car.

The heating bills this winter are going to devastate my son and his family and all I can do is give him my paychecks every week as rent.

I now realize what a fool I was all these years, hating Democrats when they were actually helping me more than Nixon, Reagan, Bush I & II ever did.

I blame Jimmy Carter for everything. He made me think of Democrats the way I do.

I used to think Bill Clinton was a jerk for cheating on his wife. That's all I could care about when it came to politics back then. I never thought things could get as bad as they have.

What I would give to have those 8 years with Clinton back again, or better yet, to re-live these last eight years stolen from me by Bush II.

I am sorry Greg and Alice. I love you guys. I am sorry Mary. I could't afford the doctors you needed. I am sorry to everyone.

I am sorry I was not thinking.

Thank you Lord for making my son smart.

Please all the smoke and mirrors couldn't hide a speech that sounded like a PMSing cheerleader who was pissed at her boyfriend for getting dumped. Was she running for 6th grade class president? The juvenile style of writing sure suggested it. I think we made a great choice don't you?" You are asking us? Hello? The difference between a hockey mom and a pit-bull is lipstick?" Are you serious? VP of the United States? What? If this is the "red meat" that Palin was supposed to deliver the Republicans should apply for food stamps.

Posted by: Mack | Sep 4, 2008 7:24:40 PM

Tim,

Will that be any worse than things right now? Tell me how you seem to know it will all get better with another Republican after these last 8 years of pain?

Posted by: Will | Sep 4, 2008 7:25:18 PM

To Will:
May I say that Im so sorry you lost your wife. And reading your post literally is made me cry. Probably because I was the same way. This is the first election that has truely opened my eyes, to the damage that the USA is in. Hopefully all of us who are registered voters will be able to elect the right person to change this country and the people who make it so great...on the path to a much better future, then the present we live in. Just know that your son and his wife, love you as much as you love them and Im sure they will do their very best to take care of you, like you did for your wife. My heart is with you.

Funny, I never heard Nobama lay out specific answers to economics...I heard Bill Clinton do more than B. Hussein.
Gov. Palin was introducing herself to us last night and anyone who doesn't want to give her her moment and expect her to fly right into what she and McCain propose....is an idiot. We've seen Bozo and HEARD NOTHING for 18 months...hopey, dopey, changey. She has had 4 days in spotlight (media attacks beyond belief)....give her a moment.....meanwhile I just know B. Hussein wants to tax the --- out of me and give free college ed, and have me pay for those who never want to take care of themselves...more government is my life is NOT what I want and THAT, MY FRIENDS, IS AN OBAMA FUTURE.

Posted by: Debra | Sep 4, 2008 7:29:15 PM

Will--I'm not putting down your son's intellegence but a problem with colleges today is that professors are known to push their views onto their students. About 80% of professors in college are liberal and they are indoctinating our students. Believe me, I'm telling you this first hand from when I was a student in college. The democratic party is no longer the mainstream party it use to be, it is getting more liberal and more socialistic in nature. Believe what you want but Clinton had the highest tax hike in history spreading out over 10 yrs. When Bush took over things were starting to get bad, Bush cut major taxes to offset the bad economy that was coming our way. When the Democrats took over the majority in Congress 2 yrs ago, our economy took a nose dive.

Posted by: S Adams | Sep 4, 2008 7:30:30 PM

"Funny, I never heard Nobama lay out specific answers to economics..."

You're not listening, he said hope and change.

Posted by: Mack | Sep 4, 2008 7:31:02 PM

I want Clintons' ticket from Dems then I don't want Republicans

I know one thing Obama cannot make any change even if he say the word "Change"

Posted by: Tim | Sep 4, 2008 7:38:06 PM

I feel bad for those of you who can't take care of yourselves, but it's women like Gov. Palin, born to a simple rural family, getting an education at U of Idaho, going back to Alaska and marrying her high school sweet heart, having kids, getting involved in school PTA, city council, Mayor and then Gov. of such a beautiful state....and living the American dream with guts and determination AND VERY LITTLE MONEY. No rich family, no special scholarships given to minorities...SELF MADE, RELATABLE TO MANY OF THOSE BIBLE/GUN CLINGERS THAT NOBAMA CAN'T UNDERSTAND.
So I'd rather have a woman like this as my VP than the guy on the top of the ticket on Dem side.
HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN/PALIN

Posted by: Debra | Sep 4, 2008 7:39:26 PM

Who could understand Nobama's plans anyway....he speaks in such a nuanced way....or as Hugh Hewitt said on radio today, with all the "ah, um, ahg's" it's painful to listen to him, and I just can't imagine doing that for the next four years.
Give me the straight talk express with the TWO Mavericks!
Love too, how Gov. Palin says "our opponents" and never said Barack Hussein Obama ever. I wish she had said John Sydney McCain at the end of her speech last night, tho....but we knew who she was talking about.

Posted by: Debra | Sep 4, 2008 7:45:33 PM

you are all out of your minds if you think we can get out of the mess the US is in without Taxes rising even McCain has said himself it is not off the table. He wants to privatise S.S. what happens to those of us already on it if as the republicans want, they allow people to not pay S.S. taxes and put the money in another fund LOL how many will do that, really, and how many would use it if the came on hard times.Healthcare from the republicans helps no one but the drug companies and
insurance companies.Who all give money to the republicans.Theire plan is nothing but the same old same old.Sorry people the economy took a nose dive long before the democrats took over in congress.

Posted by: jojobo1 | Sep 4, 2008 7:49:00 PM

jojobo,

You have no idea, obviously, how economics work. Your party whines about the jobs leaving the US, it's because of high taxes and if you all want to tax the "big, bad corporations" (aka employers), then you can count on more jobs leaving the US and our security threatened.

McCain/Palin want to provide incentives to employers to employ US workers and those incentives do NOT include higher taxes.

This is a no brainer. Cut people's taxes and they can spend more in the economy to grow it.

The only answer your side has is to tax, tax and more tax.

WHEN we get our very own oil and our own natural gas and other fuels, you will see this country become DEBT FREE and an economic explosion will follow. That's worth getting excited about and the revenue our own oil and gas will bring to the government will provide a debt free resource to help with health care, education and maybe even relieve property taxes.

Could you imagine a United States where gas is once again $1.00 a gallon, we have no property taxes (because our oil/natural gas exports pay for it), and everyone has their own privatized health and retirement accounts. Dream! It WILL come true with believers in the office - not the same ol!

It's time to CHANGE the ol cliches because as of last nite, you've just seen REAL CHANGE!!!!!!!!

Posted by: obamamama | Sep 4, 2008 8:00:02 PM

jojobo1--My grandmother, always been democrat, has faired much better under Bush's plan than Clinton's. She has more benefits now than she ever did under Clinton. She's voting for McCain this year.

Economy took nose dive after 9/11. All the planning on Al Qaeda's part took place during Clinton's adm. He should have gone to war after our embassy's were bombed and U.S.S. Cole but left it to Bush to clean up.
Our economy was starting to show strength before the Democrats took over, now its stagnant.

Your side can sling all the mud it wants to, there's a little saying, "know the truth and the truth will set you free"...sure you are not familiar with it since it comes from a book you probably don't read, however, this little religion clinger (me) knows the power of that statement and so does Sarah Palin, that's why you guys will NEVER ROCK HER WORLD, you'll only destroy your reputation by slinging your false accusations.

So what I want to know is who picked Palin? McCain had only met her for 15 minutes once. You don't make decisions based on one 15 minute meeting -- not if you are sane at any rate. I don't care how many other people are asking her questions, McCain is the top of the ticket, he should vet her personally, and for more than 15 minutes. I think he is being pushed around by the political establishment. Even Rove said yesterday that this was a politically motivated decision -- not one motivated by governing. This is not what I want in a leader. This looks too much like Bush-Cheney to me.

Previously a McCain supporter --- now going with Obama.

I've always been a good christian, and I like both the dems and the repubs. I think most of being a good christian is looking out for the less fortunate. Frankly, I think in this election, Obama wins in that category. McCain is pushing more tax cuts for the ultra-rich. Not that anyone likes taxes, but really it is the little guy that needs relief. The repubs (including McCain) have always been against regulating wall street. So what do we get? We get a huge collapse that really hurts the small guys and the rich guys walk free. I know McCain is pro-life, but frankly he doesnt' act like a christian in my mind (Maybe Palin does, not sure, dont really know her yet). But Obama really fits my picture of how we should go to the very end of the world to help those in need.

The Obama people hits on Palin because she did not spell out in detail their policies for new jobs. Well, guess that could compare with Obama's Ill. 13th state senate district where they lost 11% of the jobs in 8 years. Obama should get up and brag about his job building creditial as a state senator. And he has all those former senator out on the trail with him. LOL FOS

Posted by: S Adams | Sep 4, 2008 8:37:41 PM

I have been an ardent supporter/volunteer for Sen. Obama's presidential campaign, and will continue to do whatever I can to make him our 44th president. However, I do not write this email as an Obama supporter or democrat. I write this as a proud parent of two young children, who along with my partner of 11 years have been working hard to keep our business afloat and our family safe. Never believing John McCain possessed the insight or qualifications to be president, I wasn't completely surprised regarding his selection of Sharon Palin as his VP. However, the profound disrespect for, and complete misunderstanding of the judgment, power, and responsibility the presidency demands, exemplified by his VP choice not only confirmed my beliefs, but left me totally outraged! After Sarah Palin's convention speech we see that the GOP's divisive, gutter politics are alive and well!

For six years now, we have all been profoundly and adversely affected by the unjust and illegal invasion of Iraq, and the protracted unsuccessful war in Afghanistan. As Americans, we have been made to carry the burden of death and destruction, and the shame of torture and illegal detentions that have turned the world against us. We have lost thousands of troops, murdered countless numbers of innocent Iraqi's and Afghani's, and we now stand alone in the world as an isolated, antiquated, roguish nation. To this John McCain says, we can stay over there (in Iraq) for a hundred years. I say enough!

As a nation we have been profoundly and adversely affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. An impressive and powerful natural disaster that exposed not only an unacceptable level of government incompetence, but a horrific degree of racism and classism that belies policies crafted by the Bush administration, special interest groups and lobbyists. The non-wealthy residents of Louisiana were hung out to dry and left for dead, and as we viewed this horrific spectacle, John McCain, having knowledge of the devastation taking place in New Orleans, ate birthday cake with President Bush. As the waters receded, and the residents of the gulf region began to realize the enormity of their the loss, becoming displaced from their families, friends and property, John McCain voted against relief measures for Katrina victims multiple times, (2006 Senate Vote #112, 5/4/2006; 2005 Senate Vote #285, 11/3/2005; 2005 Senate Vote #234, 9/15/2005). The citizens of the gulf stood tough against disaster and brave in the face of humiliation as they were constantly referred to as "refugees" by their own country, and John McCain, having voted against an investigation into the failures of this government (2006 Senate Vote #6, 2/2/2006; 2005 Senate Vote #229, 9/14/2005), brazenly stated:

"We know we didn't have the right kind of leadership ... where government agencies were getting information from watching cable television rather than have a flow of information," McCain said during an event at Xavier University in New Orleans.
"It was not only a perfect storm as far as its physical impact ... it was a perfect storm as far as the federal, state and local governments' inability."
"Never again will there be a mismanaged natural disaster," he said, later assuring the crowd that "it will never happen again in this country; you have my commitment and my promise."

Now John McCain is at it again! Set to the backdrop of hurricane Gustav, McCain and Palin are attempting to exploit the potential devastation and loss of our citizens in the gulf region for their own political gain. Enough treachery!

We see all across America banks faltering and the number of foreclosures looming as large as since the great depression. We, as well as our families, friends and neighbors have lost what we've worked so hard to attain, and John McCain intends to continue down this disastrous path. Much like Herbert Hoover, who during the great depression, determined that the crisis would have to work itself out. John McCain believes that government does not exist to help people, but rather create a privatized free market society in which government is called upon (in every capacity, except war) as an absolute last resort. In other words, the economic and environmental crisis we currently find ourselves in, will (without his help as president) have to work itself out. Sen. McCain of seven houses, states that he doesn't know much about economics, and that people are doing pretty well under the Bush Administration. This kind of out of touch republican nonsense needs to stop! John McCain is behaving as if he's playing a game! A game where he spins a wheel and says hey, let's see what happens if...

Look, John McCain is a 72 year old man with very real and serious health concerns (melanoma), who's running to become the United States 44th president! Now, after one meeting, he selects as his VP, a women who despite her claims, is a good friend of big oil. Sarah Palin has only three years of public service experience. One as the mayor of her small Alaskan town (pop. 5,470), and two years -- one term -- as governor of the state (pop.700,000). She has no foreign policy experience, stating she knows very little about what is happening in Iraq! She has stated that she isn't sure what a VP does, and as a former member/currently active supporter of the AIP (Alaskan Independent Party), a group vigorously pursuing the secession for Alaska from the United States, she would maybe consider the position if it would be productive for the state of Alaska! She doesn't believe global warming exists, and sued the Interior Department to have polar bears removed from the protected species list, to not inconvenience the Alaskan gas pipeline project. She is an ex-catholic, rabid anti-abortionist, believing that under no circumstances should a woman ever be allowed to have an abortion, and stands against equal work for equal pay. She supported the bridge to nowhere until it unfavorably polled, and she quit her job as ethics commissioner after a year, stating that the Republican Party was too corrupt to fulfill her job duties. She opposes civil rights for gays/lesbians as well as benefits for domestic partners, and is a proponent of creationism teaching in schools. The list is long; the reality frightening, and the GOP really expects this country to accept the possibility that she could be our next president? I don't think so. Let's put an end to this and work together to make Barack Obama/Joe Biden the next President/Vice President of the United States!

The Dems had their say last week. So let the Republicans have their say this week. Why can't we all just get along.

Will-
When George W. Bush was running for his first term, a very good friend of mine said something that I will never forget. "The people who will vote for George Bush will be those who will be hurt the most by him and they don’t realize it."
Years later I know that the richest people among us don't need Republicans to support them. They would become millionaires over and over again, even if they were made penniless - and within a year. They are that aware of how to CREATE wealth.
That a political party, or that both parties, would cater to such a self-reliant group is both absurd and insane. Obama means well, and McCain is from a different era. To me, it’s about at least trying to regain the stature that our nation once had. Obama gives me hope, McCain gives me the feeling that I need to rise above $5,000,000 per year to be even visible.

It all comes down to whether or not you think we should continue the bush policies. If you think the war should continue indefinitely, while we spend $10,000,000,000 a month, and you think that bush has done well with the economy then mc-more-war is your man. If you think that it's time we start to get out of iraq and do some positive things for the average American instead of just the top 1% then vote for Obama.

There's a good reason why the mainstream media never trumpets the details of Obama's community organizing experiences.

It is sad to see how some middle class and lower income voters continually buy into these pathetic cultural arguments and personal attacks, and end up voting for leaders who systematically, deliberately redistribute wealth from poor to rich -literally taking money out of their and their children's pockets.

Income inequality in the US is at the greatest level in over 80 years - since just before the great depression. Wages have gone down *in real dollars* for the vast majority of American workers, while the average CEO now makes hundreds of times the salary of the average worker.

I remember watching some of DNC with Michelle. No one was paying attention to her, they were walking around and talking amongst themselves. Funny.

Cindy McCain is not a big mouth like Michelle. Cindy has class and is soft spoken. She talked about her charity work and her children and her love of country.

For the life of me I can't remember anything Michelle said, I don' think anyone else can either. Forgettable.

--Will, You sound like a man that is truly down and I wish you happiness tomorrow with blue skies and a robin in your yard. You see, I have been in a wheelchair, walker, in and out hospitals and years of therapy. But I do try to find simple things to make me smile, my cat, beautiful clouds, a phone call from a family or friend. I lost family members too that made my life whole. Have a better tomorrow, Will.

In an audacity of deception and hypocrisy, Barack Hussein Obama has successfully mislead a significant group of Americans to support his attempt to turn an American system of free enterprise and capitalism into a totalitarian socialist state.

The deception and hypocrisy includes a lengthy list of lies and half truths, but the very length prohibits listing all of them on this blog. As such, the most obvious and publicized will garner the spotlight:

First there were the Rezko lies, with Obama saying his association with Antoin "Tony" Rezko, who is currently facing federal charges of attempted extortion, money laundering, and fraud, wasn't a close association.

That was proven to be a lie very publicly. Obama also lied about the amount of money he received from Tony Rezko... again, proven to be a lie because it was far more than what Obama admitted to.

Obama's next set of lies were in relation to some harsh comments he made regarding NAFTA, and it was revealed later that Obama's campaign had secretly told Canada officials not to take the political positioning too seriously.

Once again, Barack Obama denied that his campaign spoke to the Canadian officials, but oooops, a memo was later circulated showing that Obama's senior economic adviser, Austan Goolsbee, did indeed meet with them and did assure them not to pay attention to Obama's rhetoric about NAFTA.

Then we come to Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama's pastor for the better part of 20 years, and videos of some of Wright's sermons made headlines that were shown from one end of the globe to another. His more infamous sermon where he says "G-d D-mn America" as well as many other racial, Anti-American comments.

Immediately after those videos hit the airwaves, blogs, media and video sites, Barack Obama wrote a long piece denying that he had ever heard Wright's rhetoric.

Then Obama changed his tune: "Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes..."

The list is, of course, lengthy, but it can be viewed at a host of websites by simply Googling "Obama lies"

The ignorance Americans display regarding our tax system is breathtaking. The top 1% of income earners pay 40% of all taxes. Most of that wealth transfer covers taxes for the bottom 50% who pay about 3% of all taxes. Many taxpayers in the bottom 50% pay NO TAXES AT ALL but they receive significant tax credits (essentially welfare). So, it makes total sense that tax cuts go to the top tiers. They absolutely should. They pay most of the taxes and subsidize millions of other Americans. And, by the way, it's the taxpayers at those top tiers that employ many of us through their small businesses. If you punish them, you punish yourself. If they have more capital available via lower taxes, they invest in their businesses and hire more workers. So please dispense with the class warfare and educate yourself before you support policies like Obama's that can potentially put you on the street.

For some reason, when Obama spouts his economic gibberish along the lines of taxing the wealthy and businesses, the socialist/democrat crowd starts to jump with joy.

Perhaps they don't understand the concept of trickle down taxes.

When taxes on the wealthy are increased, they do not absorb the tax. They simply pass the increase on to the middle and lower class people who do pay taxes. Remember, they own the corporations.

When taxes on businesses are increased, they do not absorb the tax. They simply pass it on to the consumers in the middle and lower tax brackets who buy their goods. Or, they lay off the working class people eliminating their income totally.

Moving towards socialism will not fix our economic problems.

What it will do is move us closer towards the same end the Soviet Union faced a few years back.

The USA According to Obama...

Jim, it is you who displays the greatest ignorance of all. The 1% of Americans who control the wealth benefit from a tremedous degree of tax loopholes, tax breaks and tax credits. Moreover, you are referring to a trickle down economic system that ultimately works for no one, not even the wealthy. Afterall, if people can't afford to get to work, they certainly can't afford to make money for the corporations that hold our investments. As for welfare, it no longer exists in this country -- President Clinton took care of that. Periodically I like to see what people are saying in these comments; I find it interesting. You should further educate yourself on the true workings of our tax systems and tax codes, as well as our tax laws. I should know, I am one of the top 1%.

S. Agnew VI, please, save us the tired old class-warfare lecture for your cocktail parties with fellow like-minded, guilt-ridden liberals. If you feel that badly about the inequity of the tax code, and the need for more welfare, then give away all your wealth. Nobody's stopping you. My points are well-documented in the provided link. By the way, nice hubris. What makes you think you're talking to people of lesser wealth in these blogs? You know nothing of our educational and business backgrounds, let alone our net worths. You're embarrassing yourself.
