Obama: McCain's Economic Message Out of Touch

Share

September 14, 2008 8:21 AM

ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: Sen. Barack Obama took aim at Sen. John McCain's economic message, saying his presidential rival does not have a vision for moving the economy forward.

Obama, D-Ill., told ABC's Chris Cuomo, "You would be hard-pressed to explain to me what John McCain's economic vision is about how he's gonna get this economy back on track. That, I believe, is somebody who is out of touch with what is -- should be the central question of this election."

Watch the entire Cuomo interview with Obama Monday on "Good Morning America".

With the campaigns trading barbs over a host of issues that go beyond the candidates' records and positions, anticipation for the upcoming presidential debates has grown. In the early part of the summer, McCain, R-Ariz., proposed weekly town hall meetings with Obama so that the candidates could debate their policy positions. Obama was accused by the McCain campaign of ducking the substantive meetings. Asked why he doesn't pick up the phone and agree to the meetings, Obama called the town hall proposal a "gimmick."

"This whole thing about town halls I think is a little bit of a gimmick," he told Cuomo.

"The reason that we're not talking about the issues doesn't have to do with the fact that we didn't have town halls. The reason that we're not talking about the issues is because John McCain has shown a lack of interest in talking about the issues. That's how their campaign's been run."

Todd: you can find lots "tough" interviews with Obama and with Joe Biden. Do a search. If I've seen them don't know why you haven't.

what part of not raising taxes (keep economy going and jobs of people working for small business), drilling on US SOIL (creating millions of jobs) do you not think is about helping the economy. what about fixing the hugely wasteful spending of government as well.

Mccain has very clear ideas for helping the economy. remember there is no magic fix, but mccain and palin will do the best job

OBAMA's economic policy = criticize BUSH, OBAMAS' foreign policy = criticize BUSH, OBAMA's education policy = criticize BUSH, OBAMA's policy on anything = criticize BUSH.... What happens when Bush is not there? you can't run the country on criticism alone. Let's hear OBAMA's policies on "Social Justice" that he is hiding.

First of all, I'm glad to see that Barack is still running for president and not Vice president. Cause if he, in fact, is running against John McCain then he will have to improve his record on just about everything before November. I am pretty sure he needs more time than that, possibly years, to counteract his "present" vote for the last ahh something like 100 + days in the Senate. He should be glad he's not running against Gov. Palin, she would kick his inexperienced behind too. Oh, I forgot he's not sure who he's running against.

Community organizer OBAMA calling for "social justice" has been hidden from the campaign. What about that? What does that mean ?

I find it amusing that Americans don't know what they are in store for.
Has there ever been a peroid in American histroy when jobs are shipped out at this rapid pace?
Think about it.........
What are the incentives that make foregin lands more attractive than keeping jobs in America?
-Cheap labour,
-health care cost,
-cheaper resources and not to mention increased profit for these companies!

How do you at least level the playing field? How do you make America more competitve in a global economy?
A major step is health care costs. This at least has attracted more auto manifacturing jobs to canada.
And yes they have universal health care. They have it and cherish it so dearly. Call it whatever you want, it worths it.
Obama understands that the bleeding of American jobs can not continue at this pace. Call it free trade or global economy it is killing and destroying people's lives. Obama may not stop it, but he will not encourage it. All these products that are coming from China are jobs people in the America could have been doing. McCain supports the bleeding of American jobs because he and his wife are gaining millions from exporting American jobs. If you guys don't fight for it, if you all don't stand up to say ENOUGH sorry to say this, America will not be a world power.
McCain and Bush are giving the illussion they are but think critcally are you still?. Russia knows this and countries all over the world are realizing this. With all the saber rattling for the Bush adminsitration, Russia did what they wanted. The left Georgia when they wanted, because there is nothing you can do. You can't fight Russia. McCain is still stuck in centry past and want to fight Russia because he is a Georgian.
It is important that you all restore your moral standing in the world.
On every foreign policy debate, Obama has been right. If you remove bias and think critically even Bush has been doing what Obama has dictated. The last example bing the financial aid to Georgia. Obama said this way before anybody did. So forget the "faux experience" of John McCain. He is indeed an empty suit if you remove prejudice and listen closely. His energy plan is a gimmick with no long term plan except nuclear energy he wounldn't want dumped in his backyard.
On energy independence,Obama's plan is for both long term and short term goals to energy independence.
Gas tax holiday and drill now are all gimmick. America has only 3% of oil reserves and we consume 25%, and this is not renewable energy. Think hard, McCain has voted against renewable energy initiatives. Now is the time to commit to serious energy debate and stop being held hostage by terrorist.
Black liberation or not, for the first time in American history, an intelligent man has come out and you all are falling for Sarah and McCain are like me( both intectuall under achievers) Under all these sable rattling there is no substance.
For people who have critical thinking ability you will know that these are facts.
John McCain did not pt his country first, he put himself first. He has shown questionable judgement, confusion and has been telling lots of lies of late. If you ever go to his town hall meeting, please tell him to have the real John McCain stand up because people are getting confused.

I remember the day Bush stood on the Carrier claiming we had won the war. These kind of games are what politicians like McCain and Bush play. Its the republicans way of gaining popularity. We havnt won that war or the wars we have a home which are of importance too. Obama has shown great managment skills and good decision making. He found one of the most powerful tools in the world, the internet. When campaining against Clinton he pulled in almost twice as much money and continues to do so. This country needs a good manager and with the intelligence to make good decisions. There are two canidates and one believes in almost a "military" type nation with domestic issues and policies coming in second.(Like Bush). Another that puts domestic problems, issues and policies on the same importance as having a strong military. We have long lost our general respect around the world. 9/11 had the world waving the American Flag and the world at our back. Iraq changed all that and the way Bush handled it. Communication to the international communities is important. Deplomacy can be a powerful weapen. Listening and not just talking or threatening is part of communication. To regain the respect of the world, we need somone that can commincate and with the brains to use deplomacy like Kennedy and Reagan. That does not mean having a weak military or not being ready to use it if we need to. But only after all else has failed or we are attacked first. Bush and McCain failed to have an exit strategy when we went in to Iraq. Bush has now left us with a military spread so thin, that if we were attacked, we would have a hard time addressing it in a quick response.A good manager or President with good advisers would have seen that coming and would have taken steps not to let us be in this situation. We should have put our forces into Afg and finished that war which would have been won by now if we handnt gone in to fill Bushs agenda in Iraq and the SOB that attcked NY is still free and alive. Obama has shown through his campaine that he makes good decisions, manages well, talks issues and problems in American on an even playing field while stressing the importance of a strong military. He is great at communicating both on domestic, international and military issues. Independent voting for Obama 08

PALIN IS PHONY, REPUBLICANS ARE TRYING TO SELL HER TO PUBLIC

Posted by: pain | Sep 14, 2008 11:46:07 AM

McWar and Cheney with lipstick can not talk about the issues, because they yell sexism anytime anyone question them. Like the boy who cry wolf.

Posted by: suv2001 | Sep 14, 2008 11:56:07 AM

Why are people comparing Palins ability not to answer a straight question with the idea that Obama hasn't answered any hard questions. Someone even had the nerve to say that Charlie Gibson hasn't interviewed Obama. Get your facts straight.
If you like Sarah Palin, fine, but stop with all the lies and misinformation.

According to the US Defense Energy Support Center Fact Book 2004, in Fiscal Year 2004, the US military fuel consumption increased to 144 million barrels. This is about 40 million barrels more than the average peacetime military usage.

144 million barrels make 395,000 barrels per day, almost as much as daily energy consumption of Greece.

The US military is one of the biggest customer of oil in the world.

Until the price of oil goes down to $80.00 or less per barrel (Oil companies still make a decent profit @ $80.00 a barrel), then consumable inflation will go down, average Americans will have more money in their pocket to spend to help drive the rest of the sectors of the economy such as durable goods, housing and services.

But $80.00 a barrel can only happen by supply and demand, by shifting the current policy of military occupation to hard diplomacy (hard diplomacy does not imply being irresponsible to the threat of national security) that results in the military fuel footprint decreasing to peace time usage.

In addition, managing the allocation of oil to refill the National Strategic Oil Reserve in a way that does adversely affect the civilian supply and demand markets. Also increasing oil refinery capacity which has not happened in the last 30 years.

Where to drill is the U.S. is a faux debate. The Arctic pipeline is already is established, so the safest and secured place to drill is in Colorado and Wyoming for oil shale. Considered by experts bigger haul then Saudi Arabian Oil fields.

* Keep in mind, that China and India fuel of choice is coal, because of the lower cost of overhead, which is one of the reasons for their economic expansion (low energy overhead factored in ROI)

With two former oil industry executives in the White House why should we be surprised by the economies of oil?

Obama's economic message makes no sense. You can't reduce taxes for over 90% of the American workforce when you have 44 million who don't pay any taxes to begin with.

Posted by: Asia2PA | Sep 14, 2008 12:04:22 PM

The statement that Obama has had 94 chances to reduce taxes is a Palin lie during her interview with Charles Gibson. Check factcheck for the long list of McCain/Palin lies

McCain's financial adviser, former Sen Phil Gramm is a major cause for the problems by deregulating futures trading and financial institutions. Gramm removed the laws put in place to prevent another "Great Depression" Do a search on Gramm and foreclosure, subprime, Enron, speculators

McCain said Gramm is a genius economist and McCain has said he does not understand economics

This is too serious for McCain that loves fighting wars, but will not answer questions about policy

What has McCain accomplished during 26 yrs in Congress?

Posted by: Julie | Sep 14, 2008 12:10:20 PM

Obama's economic plan is to criticize, then agree that Bush did good in saving Bear&Stearns,Freddie/Fannie. That's leadership? As a Senator he should have been paying more attention to the economy rather than running for president the whole time. Obama doesn't want to talk long term:::goal is to take your money and give it to those "he" thinks needs it more.

So, when Hillary confronted sexism, did that stop her from doing hard interviews? So, when Obama confronted racism, did that stop him from doing hard interviews? So, when McCain confronted issues about his age, did that stop him from doing hard interviews. So, whenever someone attempts question Palin, McCain camp yells sexism.

A responsible tax policy usage of tax code, tax cuts and tax credits will target a specific ROI.

Both political parties in this 2008 presidential campaign have given lip service to tax cuts but neither Senator McCain or Senator Obama have given specifics which domestic and foreign policy programs they will cut. And this should be the first order of the budget, where to cut.

In all fairness to Senator Obama, his campaign has stated they are looking at cutting the military presence in Iraq and shifting the military focus, east to Afghanistan. Senator Obama has stated with the saving of from reduce military footprint and obsolete weapons systems, his administration plans to invest in domestic infrastructure to help the economy. Senator Obama needs to put domestic cuts on the table as well becuase his proposed cuts will not be enough.

Mr. Greenspan has recently stated that Senator McCain tax cuts are dangerous and would require deep cuts in the government spending.

Until Senator McCain and Senator Obama can give specifics in significant cabinets and program cuts and then follow through with tax credits that financial sense not political sense, then that will be real change from past Democrat and Republican administrations. The last eight years has been a bridge to no where

Drill here drill now!

Lot's of union job's with drilling, refining and transportation. Union jobs that will let a family have a house and some cars and kids and a life.

What does Obama have? Retraining? I don't want to sit behind a desk I want to work. I like to work. Drilling jobs can not be done by some kid in Bangladesh can they. I want a real job and McCain is my only hope to get real jobs back in America.
