Obama Postpones SNL Appearance Due to Hurricane Ike

ABC's Sunlen Miller and Matt Jaffe Report: Senator Obama has postponed his upcoming 'Saturday Night Live' appearance due to Hurricane Ike barreling toward Texas.

"In light of the unfolding crisis in Texas, Sen. Obama has decided it is no longer appropriate to appear on 'Saturday Night Live' tomorrow evening," Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki explained in a statement.

Obama's appearance will be rescheduled for a more appropriate time.

The senator will go on with a previously scheduled Saturday morning event in Manchester, N.H. and then will return to Chicago instead of flying to NYC for the season premiere of the show.

Sen. Obama has been monitoring the hurricane thus far from the campaign trail.  He received a midday briefing on Friday from FEMA Administrator David Paulison and spoke later in the day with Houston mayor Bill White. White told Obama that Houston is prepared for the hurricane, Obama spokeswoman Linda Douglass said. Obama offered to do whatever he could to help, including using his website to raise funds for relief efforts.

Sen. Joe Biden, also scheduled to appear with Obama at the Manchester event on Saturday, cancelled as well due to the hurricane.

"In light of Hurricane Ike and its path through Texas, Sen. Biden will not be traveling to New Hampshire tomorrow," said Biden spokesman David Wade. "We intend to pick up our regularly scheduled travel on Sunday from Wilmington to Charlotte."

This is the second straight day Biden has cancelled a trip due to Ike - late Thursday, he scrapped a Friday swing through Texas for fundraisers in San Antonio and Austin.

When Hurricane Gustav was hitting Louisiana, Obama took a break from campaigning to monitor the storm.

Republicans lost 25% of their convention to Gustav, so why shouldn't BO put aside a star turn on SNL. He and Biden should sit out the whole week come to think of it.

Geez, guy can't win for trying. Go on SNL, he's a celebrity. Stay home, he's trying to look good for the media. Why can't it just be that he cares about what people are going through and chooses to be respectful? He's not the sort to fiddle while Rome burns (that's a colloquialism, not an attack, Republicans) -- why fault him for that?

There isn't anything this man does not do that isn't all about him. I don't think for a minute he gives a fig for Americans the way McCain has/does. He could never earn my vote and he shouldn't earn the WH...his ego with his 6 million $$ Grecian rock stadium...always grandstanding! He will have a crappy Sat. night when he's not mugging for the cameras at SNL. This guy loves attention and ego feeding. Never B. Hussein.

Obama should get Michael Phelps (the host of SNL's season opener) and go to Texas in a boat a la Sean Penn and have Phelps swim out and rescue people ! (I would prefer Mark Spitz.) Don't tell the press, just do it. J.H.C!! now that would be a maverick. I'd vote for that! But in America, it's better to just appear to be concerned. btw, Im voting for O but I was an Edwards supporter early on. Obama should put Edwards on the stump to suck all the oxygen away from Palin. The press would explode! For God's sake, he was the MOST progressive candidate in the top tier. The only economic populist. The only one addressing poverty and corporate power, and the only one who would hold the Bush administration accountable. But don't hold your breath because the Democrats will never play offense or do something so bold. I have to give it to McCain on that front. Oh, the John Kerry of it all...

I guess Obama is concern with Texas because it has more votes than Louisiana. He certainly is not worry about the thousands of homes that have been hit by the two storms in the last ten days. I would like to know where Michelle was on 9/11. I guess she was home taking care of the children like he and Charlie Gibson think Sara Palin should do since she is a woman. I wonder if he will put his family first before his country or if only a woman has that issue to deal with. I wish someone would ask that question of him.

What did Rumsfeld say about the republican base? Something about 'dead-enders'?

1) To those questions I've seen on these blogs repeatedly regarding where was Michelle Obama on 9/11 (and I wonder what this has to do with the content of this article): she was in Chicago because their girls' school was starting.

2) Regarding this article: Obama does the right thing and keeps to the background. Unlike McCain, who staged a big photo-op during Gustav - getting in the way of everyone - and the GOP who made some crocodile tears on the first day of their convention (but at least it was an improvement over three years ago, what with the cake eating and shoe shopping...)

I think when they name an aircraft carrier after President Obama they should break with tradition and spell out his middle initial: USS Barack Hussein Obama

To RJMP I wish someone would ask Sarah Palin how old she believes the earth is and if dinosaurs should be renamed Jesus horses .

God Bless Obama and those that support this fine man - Our next President of the United States! Man that looks good after eight years of American decline!

Message to all conservatives: Greed is the root of all evil.

Obama's website? Currently asking for visitors to give to the Red Cross or Save the Children to assist families displaced by Hurricane Ike. McCain's website? Currently displaying it's latest smear ad without a mention of a storm that is destroying the Texas and Louisiana coasts.
As a person who currently does not know if she has a home to return to, I see at least one candidate who is concerned for others.

Go back to your cave. You are a worthless human being to say something like that with what's happening in Texas. Why don't you go volunteer like Obama has done and suggests we all should too instead of posting hate filled messages and sit on your butt!

God Bless the Ike victims.

don't be obamatized .. he is worried about the "celebrity" label ... why is he going to N.H. right in the midst of when the hurricane is supposed to hit? ... and then flying back to Chicago?
......... McCain is probably receiving all the same information .. but he doesn't use it for political gain!!
McCain-Palin '08
Hillary Clinton 2012!!

Hmmm... didn't mccain goto lousiana during gustav ?? McCain exploited the victims of 9/11 for political purposes during the GOP convention in that video. As someone who lost my cousin I was appalled, so don't get me started on political gain. btw, did u know he's a POW ?

Hillary lost the primary for 3 reasons:

1) poor campaign organisation

2) negative ads

3) too much lies

I like Hillary very much, but this is not sexism to say she missed her campaign. The more McCain will go negative and untrue, the more the american people will see the same old samed old republican tactics.
It works 2 times, but it won't work this time.

The Palin aura will not fade so quickly, but it appears that the tandem Obama/Biden is better balanced that an out-of-touch McCain/versus hockey mom Palin. There is more policy differences between Palin and (the real) Mc Cain, that between McCain and Obama. They differ on abortion, stem cells, climate change, earmarks, energy. Mc Cain took Palin for political reasons and for that, he (and not the MSM or Obama campaign) must be considered as sexist.

Palin pales in comparison to Hillary. Any woman voter who has any respect for all that Hillary stands for should not be voting for Palin. Hillary is a powerful woman - in thoughts, in action, and in being a symbolic respresentation for all women who want to go all out and achieve more in life and career. If just being a woman and having to cope with family problems is a qualifier for running for public office, then every woman I know should qualify as a candidate. McCain picked Palin because Obama didn't pick a woman to run beside him. After seeing more of Palin's dirty linen out on the street and after having seen 8 years of the Republicans, Americans need no better reason to choose Democrats for the office this year.
