Obama Says Now is the Time for a Debate

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will not match Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in suspending his campaign to work on the economic crisis in Washington DC, and made clear that he believes Friday’s presidential debate should go on as scheduled.

"I believe that we should continue to have the debate," Obama said in Clearwater Florida. "It's my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess."

Obama said a president needs to be able to deal with more than one thing at once.

Obama made his statements during a rushed press avail thrown together at the last minute, following a 5 minute phone conversation with Senator McCain where the two men agreed that they should issue a joint statement about the emergency economy proposal being debated in Congress.

Senator McCain came out first with the news speaking to a press pool in NYC – much to the Obama campaign’s surprise.

Senator Obama said there may have been a miscommunication when the two men spoke just minutes before, and that he didn’t get the impression at that point that McCain had made up his mind decisively about the debates, or suspending his campaign, which McCain had announced.

"The only possible miscommunication might have been how quickly there was announcement and somebody was on television. I think probably my assumption was, was that the joint statement would go out initially."

Senator Coburn had reached out to Senator Obama last night, suggesting that the two candidates should issue a joint statement. At 8:30 am today Senator Obama left a message for McCain, and at approximately 2:35 pm the two men finally spoke on the phone.

Obama told reporters that he will not suspect his camping and echoed repeatedly that the debate should go on because the economic situation is the very reason that the American people should hear from the two men that would inherit the nation’s problems.

The Obama campaign will also not match McCain’s decision to suspend advertising, previously scheduled campaign stops and fundraising. Senator Obama has a slower campaign schedule than regular – spending three days in Florida preparing for the debate. The Obama campaign says that he will likely go on with a local stop somewhere in the Tampa are on Thursday.

Senator Obama says he will return to Washington, DC this week if Congressional leadership asks him, and thinks it’s helpful for him to return.

"If it turns out that we need to be in Washington, we've both got big planes. We've painted our slogans on the sides of them. They can get us from Washington, D.C., to Mississippi fairly quickly."

If McShame can't handle multitask these two things together and attend the debate, then that is proof positive he doesn't have the mental capacity to lead this nation. It is far more important for Americans to hear how he will respond as the president in a situation like this. He has never been a good legislator and congress will handle this without him, just as they have for the past 631 votes he has missed.

Obama: "Now is time for debate", translation: "I refused McCain's townhall debates before b/c I would have been thoroughly embarassed, but now that I have crammed for this debate, I am afraid if we wait, I won't be able to hold onto all this info in my feeble little mind, so please have this debate now so I don't look like a buffon, or more like a buffoon than I already do".

So, Mr. Obama, if a president is suppposed to be able to multitask, kindly tell the American people how you completely IGNORED your duties as chair of the European affairs committee, while you were busy selfishly campaigning, if you think you should have been able to do both? In the meantime, while you were selfish, hundreds of people of died in Afghanistan, because you couldn't do your duties to oversee nato?

Will you, Mr. Obama, explain that to the American people? Do you honestly think your silly debate is more important than this economic crisis that will affect everyone's lives?

Are you that selfish, mr Obama? Do you have one shred of moral decency in that corrupt body of yours?

Honestly.....how could you vote for this liar, Obama?

Hello!!!!! think it thru. If its not settled Friday night, they're both in deep doo doo and its blame game...If its settled whenever its settled, they can DEFEND their final position. The other way around, muddies the waters by dissecting their positions on a compromise which must be settled URGENTLY. Dow 9000 anyone??

Once again Obama shows leadership in not falling for this cheap trick by McCain and his handlers. The American people see through it too. And now they are trying to move Biden Palin back too. McCain's a maverick because he lacks the brand of a leader.

My parents taught me that in emergency situations, it was imperative that I did not put myself in the way of emergency workers and hinder relief efforts.
John McCain had to go down to the Gulf Coast as Gustav came roaring in, Obama stayed away from the relief teams to give them more room and not clutter things up with his entourage. McCain is NOT needed during the negotiation phase of this bailout, nor is Obama - they should both stay away until the plan is ready to vote on.
That gives them time to debate.

Obama votes "present" again. He has no idea what to do about this latest crisis and will act the same on every issue if he is elected. I almost hope he wins so his ignorant followers will find out what it means to suffer. Those of us who have no debt can then sit back and laugh with our guns ready to hold off those who would steal our last piece of bread.

"Obama told reporters that he will not suspect his camping" I certainly hope not but Biden probably did

John McCain is doing what is right for America, he is going to make sure the economy is saved! Why is Obama wanting a debate now, McCain has been trying all summer for him to have a town hall, now all of a sudden he wants a debate. Obama and Dems what is more important!! Obama is like Bush , he hid is Tx during Katrina and Obama is hiding in Fl. for the worst economy disaster! Country First!!! Obama says Debate first, the heck with the economy!!!!!!!!

It's all about Obama's EGO and his DRIVE to be ONSTAGE!

But Daaaad...I practiced all night, I HAVE to go to school to give my speech!" "But son, the school is on fire." Teach 'em heck McCain...he'll soon learn the meaning of leadership and doing more than voting present.

McCain in the way? BULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Today Harry Reid told John McCain to get lost, you don't have to come back - it might be political grandstanding.

Yeah but JUST YESTERDAY...

The Same Democrats Decrying Today's Action By John McCain Are The Same Democrats Who Were Demanding John McCain's Involvement Yesterday
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV): "We Need The Republican Nominee For President To Let Us Know Where He Stands On What We Should Do." REID: "We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do." (Sen. Harry Reid, Media Availability, Washington, D.C., 9/23/08)
Roll Call: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Told The White House That Senator John McCain Was Crucial To Any Bailout Deal. "Fearing a political backlash against Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has told the White House that it must serve up support from Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) if it hopes to ensure bipartisan backing for a massive economic bailout package by week’s end." (Erin P. Billings and John Stanton, "Reid Seeks McCain Pledge," Roll Call, 9/24/08)
Roll Call: "McCain Holds The Key To … A Bipartisan Vote, According To Reid …" "McCain holds the key to such a bipartisan vote, according to Reid, because Republicans are likely to defer to his position on a bill that holds political peril. McCain on Tuesday night joined Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) in lending qualified support for the $700 billion package, but it remains unclear whether his backing is strong enough and timely enough to persuade the Congressional rank and file." (Erin P. Billings and John Stanton, "Reid Seeks McCain Pledge," Roll Call, 9/24/08)

Senator Reid Told Secretary Paulson That Senator McCain Was Necessary For Any Agreement. "According to a Democratic aide familiar with the discussions, Reid told Paulson this week that 'if McCain didn’t come out for this thing and come out for it quickly, it was going to begin bleeding Republican votes.' Democrats 'have a very real concern that opposition [from McCain] is going to drive away potential Republican votes,' this aide said." (Erin P. Billings and John Stanton, "Reid Seeks McCain Pledge," Roll Call, 9/24/08)
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos: White House Has Been Told By Democrats "That There Is No Deal If McCain Doesn't Go Along." "A Democratic leadership source says that White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten has been told that Democratic votes will not be there if McCain votes no – that there is no deal if McCain doesn't go along." (George Stephanopoulos, "McCain; Holds Key To Administration's Bailout Passage On Capitol Hill," ABC News, 9/23/08)

Liberati doth protest too much, methinks. Your pitifully weak and surprisingly shrill "I'm rubber and you're glue" post can't diminish McCain's monumental gaffe this time. But if you were trying to deflect attention away from the last lie McCain was caught in (see "Rick Davis"), you may have succeeded.

poor obama he had his little tele prompter all fired up and then mccain reminds him that they are still senators on the payroll whose constituents expect them to do the job they were elected to do.

obamas suggestion CALL ME!

Posted by: colorado | Sep 24, 2008 7:37:09 PM

LOL!

McCain: 'Let's roll up our sleeves and do what we can to help the American people".

Obama: "Call me if you need me".

This is Barack's Katrina...he's a deer in headlights while the others scramble around him to solve the giant crisis.

Obama doesn't get it; that is, actions speak louder than words!

McCain acts.

Obama wants to debate.

It is clear that McCain is the better presidential candidate!!!

The last I checked Obama is still a senator, he is paid by us ,the American people. Why isn't Obama doing his job!! Thank god, McCain is doing his job!! Americans will see that Obama doesn't care about our economy

STUNT PILOT

John McCain graduated near the bottom of his Naval Academy Class and that achievement apparently encouraged him to take up his lifelong vocation: Political Stunt Pilot. He’s “suspended” his campaign and canceled the debate and now flies to DC to take credit for the Credit Crisis Rescue Plan now being finalized in Congress by serious, professional, committed, knowledgeable adults. He confessed he doesn’t know much about the Economy, or Computers, but at least the President of the United States should be able to Multi-task? I don’t know which is worse; Sidekick to Bush or Stunt Pilot,

meanwhile....

An answer is due TODAY in the case of Philip Berg vs. Obama, where his constitutional right to be President is being questioned. Hmmmm....do you supposed Mr. Obama will respond, or push for dismissal?

Seems like such a simple thing to solve, but doth he protest too much?

What does Mr. Obama have to hide.....

hmmmm...
