Stephanopoulos: Obama Says Abortion Answer 'Probably' Too Flip
September 07, 2008 10:12 AM
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said this weekend that his response on the definition of human life at minister Rick Warren's Saddleback Chruch Forum was "probably" too flip.
When Warren asked Obama last month at what point he believes a baby gains human rights, Obama responded: "Whether you're looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade."
Obama gave his answer last month at a nationally televised religious forum sponsored by Warren at his megachurch in Orange County, Calif.
But in an exclusive "This Week" interview airing this morning, Obama said that answer was probably too flip.
"Probably," Obama said when asked if his answer was too flip. "What I intended to say is that, as a Christian, I have a lot of humility about understanding when does the soul enter into ... It's a pretty tough question."
"Abortion is a moral issue ... it’s one that families struggle with all the time," Obama said. "In wrestling with those issues, I don’t think that the government criminalizing the choices that families make is the best answer for reducing abortions."
Obama said, "The better answer...is to figure out, how do we make sure the young mothers, or women who have a pregnancy that’s unexpected or difficult, have the kind of support they need to make a whole range of choices, including adoption and keeping the child."

Agreed ...the POTUS job is "above Obama's pay grade" for sure.

Now that is a good answer.

WELL ITS FUNNY how the Democrats TRY and USE the ABORTION arguement to SCARE people in to supporting that empty suit Obama! WHEN even Obama back tracks and does not take a firm approach on abortion! ABORTION IS A MORAL ISSUE, not an election issue and matters to less than 3% of voters, so WHY do the LIBERALS keep using it? Its a moot argument! AND I know that abortion will remain law, and not be outlawed. BUT late term abortions needed to be limited for just elective procedures...
Obama you and the DNC are out of gas...

What a reasonable answer rather than saying I am against abortion in all cases, even in the case of rape.
Perhaps if Governor Palin didn't oppose the use of birth control in all cases her daughter wouldn't be pregnant.

Mark,
I think people like you have too much gas!
Senator Obama's response was the most measured he could have given. I'm sure people like you would have loved him to stoop to debating morality, as if it has to do with policy but thankfully he gave a response keeping him from that. Could he have answered the question with more tact, certainly but I equate a question like that in terms of relevance to whether or not he believes in virgin birth or the Easter Bunny for that matter. They are personal beliefs that do not belong in the spectrum of national policy. It is obvious what your belief and mine are but they currently do not reflect other opinions which fall far left and far right of millions of Americans besides us and as such, should NEVER affect national policy. You are right about one thing-the point is mute. Americans, particlary the 50-plus % of those female are sick of having their individual reproductive rights discussed and reduced to the likes of owning a car!

The bulk of this country disapproves of abortion, but thinks it should be legal. I think Obama holds that view also.
McCain wants it outlawed. Palin wants it outlawed even in the case of rape and incest. This just shows that these people are WAY outside the mainstream. Palin in particular -- who also has stated that creationism should be taught in schools, that global warming is not real, and that god wanted us to build an oil pipeline. I can't believe there is anyone out there but a mere few on the fringe who thinks it is a good idea to have someone with these views in power.

I also think that this form of religious litmus test, as happened in Saddleback is dangerous because the event was framed as a discussion of qualifications to be president. I find this frightening to say the least. Why are we STILL so complacent about these obviously facist overtones, after 8 years of this I wonder?

SARAH PALIN’S SECURITY CLEARANCE
Before you dismiss the fact that Sarah Palin is Commander of the Alaska National Guard consider this.
Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from
ballistic missile attacks. It¢s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units.
As governor of Alaska , Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counter terrorism. Her exposure to classified material may rival even Biden’s and certainly by far exceeds Obama’s.
She’s also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security’s counter terrorism plans.
Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country’s defense. Given Alaska ’s proximity to Russia , she may have security clearances we don’t even know about. According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets. She can be entrusted with our national security, because she already is.

Drop the abortion threat boys!
Women will always be able to find a legal abortion. Many European countries and from Canada to Mexico, have legalized abortion.
Get ya a new talking point in your script this one is a loser!

Actually, Bush took away control of state national guard units recently so that he has control over commanding the national guard, not Palin. She has never made any decision regarding the national guard -- like when to deploy and why. These decisions are made in washington.

WRONG!

Yeah, sure. Women who can afford to travel to canada will be able to get abortions.
Here's a whopper of a problem.
We've got tons of illegals in this country, mainly from mexico, who come here to do things like pick apples. Everyone agrees it is a bad situation. These are exactly the ones that cannot travel to other countries for abortions, they can't afford it and they are afraid that they won't be able to get back in -- so these are the ones that have more and more children. And the children, born in the USA are citizens. So in a few years, all your right wing policies will end up making us part of the united states of mexico. Hope you like them apples.

Nobody found out?? Obviously McCain didn't find out anything about Palin now did he? She wasn't vetted and is now a ticking time bomb. Amazing, this woman would be a heartbeat (and a weak heartbeat at that) away from the Presidency and we now find out that she went to five colleges in six years to get her degree.
This was McCain's first decision as a Presidential candidate and he bombed terribly. Not a good sign for our future if he actually does become President.

Obama ducks the abortion issue? What about the rest of the issues? ECONOMY -can Obama really explain with any depth, how increasing the size of the fed by 20-30 percent (As he intends to do), will help the economy? It might sound to some people, but actually would be an economic disaster - AND WE ALL WILL GET STUCK WITH THE BILL!! ENERGY? OBAMA DOES NOT HAVE A VIABLE ENERGY PLAN - MARGINAL DRILLING, WHICH PROBABLY MEANS NO DRILLING (ESPECIALLY WITH PELOSI AND ASSOCIATES), DEFENSE - WORDS JUST FAIL ME HERE!!

The more he try to SPIN it, the more his polls numbers are falling ...
Even before the full effect of RNC Convention Bounce is kicking in, the average of all polls (CNN, CBS, Gallup, Ramussen, Hotline) is showing Obama leading by a wafer thin margin of 1.8%. McCain is now 44.6% snapping away at Obama 46.4%
I know a lot of Obama supporters are going to say they do not believe in polls....they are afterall .... JUST POLLS !!!

"above my pay grade." -- But in an exclusive "This Week" interview airing this morning, Obama told Stephanopoulos "what I intended to say is that, --------------THE BIG QUESTION IS IF HE INTENDED TO SAY WHAT HE NOW SAYS IN DETAIL, WHY DIDN'T HE SAY IT DURING THE FORUM? Could it be because he needed some coaching from his campaign on what to say? He has a lot to say now but nothing during the forum?
He just keeps doing this and then says something else...is this what he is going to do with foreign countries??

Obama is always afraid of telling truth, because he is worried about losing votes.
Votes is the #1 thing he cares.
He is selfish, not straight, not put country first, not a leader.
He is a calculator.
