Stephanopoulos: Obama Says Abortion Answer 'Probably' Too Flip

Share

September 07, 2008 10:12 AM

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said this weekend that his response on the definition of human life at minister Rick Warren's Saddleback Chruch Forum was "probably" too flip.

When Warren asked Obama last month at what point he believes a baby gains human rights, Obama responded: "Whether you're looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade."

Obama gave his answer last month at a nationally televised religious forum sponsored by Warren at his megachurch in Orange County, Calif.

But in an exclusive "This Week" interview airing this morning, Obama said that answer was probably too flip.

"Probably," Obama said when asked if his answer was too flip. "What I intended to say is that, as a Christian, I have a lot of humility about understanding when does the soul enter into ... It's a pretty tough question."

"Abortion is a moral issue ... it’s one that families struggle with all the time," Obama said. "In wrestling with those issues, I don’t think that the government criminalizing the choices that families make is the best answer for reducing abortions."

Obama said, "The better answer...is to figure out, how do we make sure the young mothers, or women who have a pregnancy that’s unexpected or difficult, have the kind of support they need to make a whole range of choices, including adoption and keeping the child."

As to abortion.... I could never have one, but I understand that other women have no other options. I don't think anyone treats it casually. But it's NOT against the law in the great country of USA, so stop using it to make people look 'bad' by supporting the LAW. On the other hand, it's sinking to a low level to pick on Palin's daughter. It's a very tough situation, and them getting married probably won't be easy on anyone, including the child. But to attack Palin because of it is using Republican tactics, and you should refrain from judging her, or even bringing it up. All that being said, God help us if we end up with McSame/Palin.

I think that George Stephanopoulos, who served President Clinton ably and well, has bought the corporate media Republican line. Every question he asked Senator Obama took the Republican line as a premise, or a given. Example 1: he focused on how many times Obama had bucked his party. The Democratic Party position, in recent years, has been correct for the country -- opposing the depredations of the Republican White House and the Republican Congress. How many times Obama bucked his party is irrelevant to whether Obama's proposed policies make sense for the nation, or show a change from the present governance.

Example 2: the "above my pay grade" remark to the preacher about abortion. Obama simply meant, and said on the show, that he doesn't presume to have the correct, God-given answer to the matter. This is a good deal more honest, and better for a country which has a separation of church and state in its Bill of Rights, than an answer which porports to represent God's will.

Stephanopoulos gets paid richly to be on television every week as a TV interviewer and pundit. He should think about the effect on his country if he ditches his logic in favor of the party line, and the dishonesty, tightly associated with the Republicans for these last 8 or more years. Or is the money too good for him to ask honest questions that are not out of the Republican attack manual?

Women, Obama is against abortion. That's the same as Palin.

The difference is that, Palin set it straight, never hide, never lied on this; but Obama hide, lied until pushed to tell the truth.

Keith.

You're making statements based upon assumptions... and you KNOW what they say about assumptions. You are correct about Palin not being good for future - THE DEM FUTURE!! A ticking time bomb? You want to explain that to the good citizens of Alaska and the millions Palin has impressed in the last week??

What is all this 'Country First' crap? Since when to Republicans OWN the love of country? My Dad lied about his age (16) to fight for America after Pearl Harbor, and his entire life he was a dyed in the wool patriot. He watched the political arena carefully his whole life and said to me "The Republicans like soldiers till they come home from the war." I have always found this to be true - visit any Veterans Home. Talk to Iraq veterans who are trying to get their disability pay. I think the printers for the GOP convention made a huge typo. It should have said "ME First".

McCain/Palin 2008, go get educated (a little more than a journalism degree) and come back to talk issues.

We need intelligent leadership, not pitbull uneducated hockeymoms with lipstick. Proof that McCain is not an intelligent leader.
The world is starting to mock our country.

Obama took a dive.

He was not asked when life begins. He was asked when a baby gets human rights. He avoids the tough issues, just as he always has done.

He voted "present" 129 times in IL and now once more.

If you can't take the tough questions, you're not fit for POTUS.

"The world is starting to mock our country."

Obama is a favorite among those who hate the US around the world.

Perfect.

Lack of Experience
• 143 days in the United States Senate
• Foreign policy experience
• No Executive experience (hasn’t run a business, town, or state, nothing, nada)
• Community organizing (going door to door to register voters for ACORN)

Has NEVER stood his ground when it wasn’t politically expedient.
• Obama gave an Anti-war speech to gain the support of the big money people in Chicago

Poor Record
• Voted “present” 129 times in the State Senate on controversial issues. (indecisive)
• Worked to remove asbestos with limited success, still remains uncompleted to this day.
• Claims credit for welfare reform in Chicago that helped to put steel workers back to work, but it was a Republican bill that President Bill Clinton signed into law and that Obama voted against!
• Asked for a million dollar earmark for his wife’s employer (she received a $200,000 raise)
• Secured 100’s of millions of dollars earmarks for private developers like Rezko resulting in failed housing projects that were rat infested, no electricity, sewerage and crime ridden, and uninhabitable forcing the government to take them over. (boston globe grim beginnings link)
• Voted in the state senate for gun control and refused to crack down on gangs. Obama helped create the situations where crime in 2008 escalated to about 30 shootings in a week.
• Chairman of the Foreign Relations subcommittee on European affairs, which he has neglected, not having once held a meeting. Countries like Georgia were his responsibility.

Broken campaign promise
• Fisa (fourth amendment rights)

Highly questionable religious connections
• Former pastor Rev. Wright “God D*mn America! America caused 9/11 and AIDs.
• Black Liberation Theology (black supremacy)

Connections to corrupt politicians, and Anti-American Organizations
• William Ayers – Terrorist - Bombed NY police station, Pentagon, Capital building in 70,71,72. People died. (He got off on technicality caused by FBI procedural mistake)
• Tony Rezko – Arab developer convicted in Chicago for money laundering and other crimes. Helped Obama find his Chicago Mansion and bought a piece of the property through his wife, whom subsequently sold a piece back to Obama.

Palin's debut was filled with nothing BUT lies. For those that have no plan and offer no leadership, they lie.
Lying is the republican way.

A superpower? The world is mocking and laughing at the stupidity of the U.S.

HP Boston your very first line is nothing but a lie! lol Obama not vetted? You people must be high on meth. Senator Obama has been raked over the coals for the last 18 months. His family has been belittled. The republicans have distorted and lied about everything he has said.

Oh yeah, they now call Alaska the meth capital of the US. That's something to be proud of, yes?!
Maybe Miss Alaska can hire another administrator to help her as Vice President.

If he was a Christian as he contends, then he would know when life begins, and as a Christian should not be ashamed to say it. I pray God he does not get elected.

Many political types agree that the democratic candidate needs to come out of the convention with at least a fifteen point lead to counteract the traditional Fall REP surge. I think in 04, John Kerry was somewhat close, but obviously, with Obama, this has not happened.

Once again, people are repeating the lies and untruths about Palin. She does NOT OPPOSE birth control, and belongs to a group called Feminists for Life, a group that opposes abortion, NOT birth control.

Instead of repeating the talking points of the likes of brain-deprived Bill Maher and the Daily Kos, do some fact finding.

bc46.

I'm sure what HPB means (which has gone over your head)is that even though he has been on stage, front and center, it is really difficult to understand where Obama really stands on issues and personal beliefs in that he has ducked, eluded and seemingly has changed positions on same. IE, few, if any really know Obama and what he believes.

Posted by: Manitu | Sep 7, 2008 11:47:31 AM

HP Boston your very first line is nothing but a lie! lol Obama not vetted?
NOT VETTED, given a free ride, well not free he has paid millions to get this far. He will pay more, he is desperate, you may make a few bucks to post for him, go for it!!!
I will vote for a real AMERICAN, not a fake like Obuma!

Posted by: HP Boston | Sep 7, 2008 11:47:57 AM

John KNEW he picked a winner and obviously, these anti Palin posts which smack of trash and panic - CONFIRM HIS CHOICE!!!

Posted by: Manitu | Sep 7, 2008 11:52:38 AM

“You are absolutely right that McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith”

Steph corrects, “Christian faith”

The precious OBUMA has a SLIP OF HIS MUSLIN FATH??????
DID YA SEE HIM THIS AM WITH GEORGE????

The only reason Obama is changing the tune is the same reason he has whenever he changes his tune: political expediency... He sat in Wright's church, never once questioning what was being said, then kicked him to the curb when he realized if he didn't, it might cost him the election...
