Stephanopoulos: Obama Considered Joining the Military
September 07, 2008 11:35 AM
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: In an exclusive "This Week" interview, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said he considered joining the military after finishing high school.
"I had to sign up for selective service when I graduated from High School," Obama said. "I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and you know, honorable option."
Obama suggested his decision not to enlist was an issue of timing, not service. "I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren’t engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it’s not an option that I ever decided to pursue," he said.
In his first Sunday morning show appearance since accepting the Democratic presidential nomination, Obama used the question as an opportunity to criticize Republican presidential candidate John McCain on veteran’s benefits.
"One of the things that I want to make sure of," Obama said, "is that, for those young men and women who decided to pursue a military career, that they are treated with the honor and dignity they deserve during service and when they get home."
"And this is actually an area where John McCain and I have had some disagreements in terms of funding veteran services and disability payments, and dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder -- things that I prioritize," Obama said.

UMMM, OKKKK!!
Sure, you did. Because any cursory review of your history supports that. His grandfather testified UNDER OATH that he was a Communist, and they moved to Seattle just so Obama's mother could attend a left wing high school, that taught classes about anarchy...
Not to mention Obama's mentor in Hawaii, Frank Marshall Davis, who was a communist also. (who bragged in his memoir about a 13 year old he and his wife seduced, that Frank)
If you're in effect raised by Communists, joining the military is the LAST thing you want to do, unless you're lying in full pander mode trying to save your own butt in an election.
Smear? If the truth is a smear, then I guess I'm smearing.

SARAH PALIN IS NOT ON TRAINING WHEELS WE CAN BELIEVE IN
"There's a lot of complaining that the McCain campaign won't allow anyone to interview Sarah Palin. And for the major news outlets that would be in line for such an interview there's a logic to keeping up the drumbeat. But McCain campaign manager Rick Davis is right: It's their campaign to run. They can do it how they want. Everyone else should just shut up, stop complaining and call the reality for what it is.
Davis says Palin won't give any interviews until she feels "comfortable" giving one. And this morning he added that she wouldn't give any "until the point in time when she'll be treated with respect and deference."
Sarah Palin could be the President of the United States in four and a half months. We tend to think of this as an abstraction; but it's true. And yet today she's so unprepared and knows so little about the challenges and tasks facing the country that she can't even give a softball interview.
That's really all we need to know. Yes, she's off being prepped at some undisclosed location. And I've little doubt that by the time her debate rolls around she'll be sufficiently pumped full of slogans and bromides to make a show of it. But now, this moment, is the one that tells us all we need to know.
As is so often the case, Palin is the incarnation of the Republican slurs. The darling of the hard-right; she gives a stem-winding speeches. She pushes all their buttons. But she's such a lightweight, they can't risk letting her answer a few questions. Not even on Fox. They know she's not ready and probably never will be. But they think the politics might work for them."

We all had to sign up for Selective Service you bofo! That's not "considering to join the military." Obama is clearly losing it. Why oh why did we not pick Hillary as our nominee?

Hahahahaha...LOL. This guy is about to be president?
You see, the media has been successful to portray that W Bush is dumb guy despite the fact that he went to Yale and Harvard Business School. And as it turned out, his grades were better than those of Al Gore and John Kerry. And now the liberal democrats and their faithful media have been successful to portray that Obama is a genius despite his very poor direct and unscripted communication skills. And he does not even have any publications under his name except his two autobios. What a megalomania guy.
Obama's candidacy is a fraud.

i suppose we all consider it to some degree or another. I considered it for a short period after high school. Never too seriously, but i considered it nonetheless.
I think George was reading an email from someone who asked if Obama ever considered it, or why he never considered it. It was kind of a condescending question...like if you don't serve you're not worthy of being an american. Typical right wing uber/psuedo patriot rantings.

Hey, EHHHHHcho. How about sticking with the topic of this thread. It's about Obammy DODGING the military, remember.
Ok, since you are obsessed with Sarah Palin, let's roll.
Think back, try, back 3, 4, 5 months ago. Sarah was running a State government, giving birth, fighting state corruption, and balancing a budget. No one could dream she would be chosen for the 2nd most important job in the free world. Why the hell should she care what went on in the Oral Office?
So now, you want her to jump in and face the Pr!ck Noberman, have Matthews slobber all over her, and each not give her a chance to answer their questions before they drum her off the stage. Yes, I can see that you WOULD like that.
But it don't work that way. She will get some OJT (that stands for On the Job Training for you Obammabots) before she has to go into battle with liberal whackos.
So, give her just a little leeway. Just pretend that she is a "community organizer".

If he had joined he might have been part of the illegal wars that the u.s military were involved in.
The wars in Nicaragua, Managua, and Guatemala. The ones where over 500,000 were killed. The wars where we supplied rebels illegally with money we got from supplying arms to IRAN.

He’s never mentioned it before, not even in two autobiographies, but Barack Obama has suddenly remembered that he considered joining the military.
Obama disclosed that he had once considered serving in the military.
“You know, I actually did,” Obama said. “I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii. And I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there.
“And I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option. But keep in mind that I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren’t engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it’s not an option that I ever decided to pursue.”
UPDATE at 9/7/08 9:12:26 am:
Just one problem with Obama’s little story.
Registration for selective service was not reinstated until 1980.
On March 25, 1975, Pres. Gerald Ford signed Proclamation 4360, Terminating Registration Procedures Under Military Selective Service Act, eliminating the registration requirement for all 18-25 year old male citizens. Then on July 2, 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4771, Registration Under the Military Selective Service Act, retroactively re-establishing the Selective Service registration requirement for all 18-26 year old male citizens born on or after January 1, 1960. Only men born between March 29, 1957, and December 31, 1959, were completely exempt from Selective Service registration. The first registrations after Proclamation 4771 took place on Monday, July 21, 1980, for those men born in January, February and March 1960 at U.S. Post Offices.

First Obama said he signed up for the Selective Service--yes, everyone does but some how he makes it sound like he is special. Obama made a mistake and said during the interview "my Muslin faith" and Stephanopolous had to correct him and say "your Christian faith" ---sort of interetsing. When asked the question about the "results" of the tax cuts, Obama didn't touch that question if they would create jobs or eliminate them....Why doesn't George Stepanopulous run for office...he is very sharp and can think....Obama doesn't listen to the questions, he repeats the same answers like he has been programmed. And, no one "monks" his 2 years experience as a "community organizer". They do good work in communities...everyone is questioning the level of work and expertise needed to be President. Can you put a elementary school teacher (who does excellent work in our communities) to teach a college course? I am very disappointed in Obama's answers and will not vote for him now. No need for the debates---he cannot think well or coordinate his thoughts.
Posted by: Ann | Sep 7, 2008 12:51:39 PM
As far as I know, efforts to confirm his registration have been unsuccessful, and Sen. Obama has failed thus far to offer proof of registration, or authorize this information to the general public. It is in the public’s interest to know whether a potential president followed the law during his lifetime.
However, Obama can lay this issue to rest immediately by providing proof of his Selective Service registration, which is required to serve in the Executive Branch. The President of the United States of America is the head of the Executive Branch of government.
Hmmmmm, don’t tell me, I already know – any “proof” is irretrievably lost.

Doesn't this say it all?? This is exactly why Obamajoey WILL be elected. The proof happens to have been repeated several times in this country. Just look at the Clintoon elections, the DC mayoral, terrible Teddy K. (pre and post Chappaquiddick),and on and on... The more these candidates lie and then tell us to believe them, because we look good or can speak well, the more the idiot public elects them. We are our own worst enemy when it comes to our elected officials.
So, more power to Obamajoey --- to the biggest liars, go the spoils (this countries wealth and offices).

Now the mask is off! McCain said that the part he loved most in Palin's speech was that she 'sold the jey on eBay' - No cover-ups possible..liars are out in the open! Let us wait and see what campaign says for this? Or that Palin mislead John as well?

Before anyone dismisses the fact that Sarah Palin is Commander of the Alaska National Guard consider this. Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units.
As governor of Alaska , Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counter-terrorism. Her exposure to classified material may rival even Biden's and certainly by far exceeds Obama's.
She's also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security's counter-terrorism plans. Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country's defense. Given Alaska 's proximity to Russia , she may have security clearances we don't even know about.
According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets.
She can be entrusted with our national security, because she already is.

Palin is in charge of the National Guard in Alaska. She has leadership skills in the military. It pays to read: Greta Van Susteren went and got the facts about Governor Palin's performance as head of Alaska's National Guard from Major General Craig E. Campbell." So which McCain do you want to vote for:
There was the one who was for RoeVWade (circa 2000) and the one who is against Roe (circa 2008)
There is the one who is against the bush tax cute (circa 2002) and the one who is for them (circa 2008)
There is the one who said the invasion of Iraq would be easy (2003) and the one who said that he knew it would never be easy (2008)
There is the one who was for immigration reform (2003) and the one who would vote against the bill that he himself wrote (2008).
Sure, McCain was once a maverick Republican, but he isn't anymore -- he's turned into George Bush. And for those of you who think you are getting one of them or the other, you had better think again... once he gets in office, which one do you think he'll be?

I wonder if the Obamabots realize where all their contributions are going? Well, we where some of it is going. Mustn't forget the $6 million Greek temple.
Word of advice: don't waste it on this man; he's simply not worth the expense.

Sure, Bush has done a wonderful job on the economy. What are you smoking?

Yes Gerald Ford had the Selective Service Act canceled in 1975 it was reinstated in 1980 by President Carter, for registration purposes only as there was no need for drafting as the All voluntary Armed Services were recruting all the people they needed. But they wanted a ready source of names in case a draft might become necessary.

He should have been an actor, what with his talented reading and all. Besides, he is really good at pulling off other people's ideals and ideas. He does have a problem being WHOMEVER he really is.

larry man did you mean the job the Republican President and his 49 Senators are blocking and have been since they lost the House and Senate last election, but not enough so the democrats could pass legislation even if vetoed??? is that the job your talking about or is it your crapola speech every Republican gives like drill here drill now as if the oil companies weren't doing just that when crude was worth 140 a barrel. At that price every oil man was foaming at the mouth to drill.

In case anyone cares that plane was not sold on e-bay. It was sold privately to an entrepreneur for 2.1 mil dollars.

What's another way to spell O*B*A*M*A?
Answer: P*E*L*O*S*I
Yep, Obama is Pelosi's boy!

OK Larryman! but is drilling relvant now after gas has gone down? Now is the chance for a long term solution not just mindless drilling! and 2 u Scott, jsut because Obama had aspirations as a young kid doesn't mean he is not qualified for the job. McCain's record shows numerous flip-flops in congress and nothing more! Just because a man serves in the military, it doesn't justify his claim to presidency!

I've always been very conservative, but I just can't bring myself to vote for McCain. Maybe it is because I'm an internet addict and i've seen SO many videos of McCain completely contradicting himself and being just entirely disingenuous. He's changed his opinion on EVERYTHING. I don't know what he stands for anymore. I think I'm going to sit this election out. I don't even care if obama gets elected --- maybe us republicans need a chance to regroup and get some new ideas instead of just saying the same thing that Bush said in 2000.

Saudis pay for Obama's Harvard education?. See Newsmax/Ken Timmerman.
Seems clear. Also, an Obama hate america connection long before Rev. Wright. Obama may have just been gullible but Obama/Panther/Saudi/Harvard connection is real.

Drilling is economically stupid. You have this resource -- you KNOW it is going to get more and more valuable and more and more scarce. So as soon as the price starts to look good you sell? NO! you hold it and sell when the price is REALLY high. Drilling now is bad economics. Save it for when we can get a decent price for it.

Give me a break with all the stupid name-calling. Things like
"Obama hates america" and "McCain is a crook" are just plain stupid. Is there any hope of having a real discussion here?

Anyone see this clip of people at the RNC trying to define "small town values". Basically, all they can think of to say about "values" is that they hate gays.. This is hysterical
Posted by: smalltownvalues | Sep 7, 2008 2:35:47 PM
Gee. I missed that entry in his books. If he had considered it, don't you think he'd of put it in his books, right next to trying "blow?"

I LOVE the daily show. They had a great clip showing side by side Bush's 2000 speech and McCain's 2008 speech. They are EXACTLY the same. It is so frightening!

notliberal.
Examples of McCain changing mind on everything? If that is true, and as a cons, I disagree very much, is that a bad thing? Changing mind is one thing, but what Obama does is much more serious than changing mind. If McCain loses this election, The REPS may NEVER have the chance to regroup. If you are really a cons, you have to be really exited about Gov. Palin, NO?

POLLS THAT MATTER
The State-by-State Electoral College Map:
Obama 301
McCain 224
Tie 13
See http://www.electoral-vote.com/
Ypou need just 270 to win. Obama has 31 in reserve and when he gets Florida and Virginia, it is over.
I can see why the Repugs are pannicking. They have had a negative bounce in the polls that matter after their convention.
McOldman is toast.
