Obama's Efforts to Woo Women Overshadowed by the Economy

ABC's David Kerley, Andy Fies, and Sunlen Miller report: Barack Obama knows he needs independent women to win in November. They've been called soccer moms and security moms. He's running against a self-proclaimed hockey mom.

So, maybe it's not surprising that two out of three events during a swing through the Southeast, and a rally today by Vice Presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden, are all aimed at women. But the troubles on Wall Street are keeping these "Obama women" events off the front pages.

Obama came to Coral Gables, Florida (a state leaning toward McCain) hoping to secure some of those security moms. The Obama campaign believes it has a better chance at attracting female Independent voters versus men who considered themselves Independents. A campaign official tells ABC news, "There are more female voters than men in the middle that we can pick up."

The Democrat did employ some of his strongest language during the campaign in support of women's rights. Obama says his opponent Sen. John McCain considers the US Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling a "flawed decision." The Democrat added that "change means a president who will stand up for choice, who understands that five men on the Supreme Court don't know better than women and their families and their doctors about what’s best for their health."

In front of an enthusiastic crowd of 7,000 mostly women, Obama praised the paths blazed by his mother and grandmother, and "women like my friend, Hillary Clinton who put those 18 million cracks in that glass ceiling. So that my daughters and all our on and daughter could dream a little bigger, reach a little higher."

The nod to his former rival got the biggest cheer and applause. The Illinois Democrat often mentions equal pay for equal work when he speaks at rallies. But at this stop he brought it up twice, forcibly. He charged that his opponent is ignoring the issue. "You'd think that solving these problems would be a high priority for anybody running for president in this country. Well, you haven't met my opponent, John McCain," said Obama.

It was a concerted effort by the campaign today. Obama in Florida, and his running-mate in another swing state. Senator Joe Biden, at a women's rally in Sterling, Virginia connected the economic trouble directly to his audience. "When the economy goes south who are the first people who get hurt the most? It's women, it's women. And I tell ya what, we're gonna change that," the Delaware Senator said.

While Obama is talking about women's issues, he is also spending time talking about the woes of Wall Street. It's what's grabbing the headlines and diverting attention from his courtship with all those "mom's" who may decide the November election.

Fact Check: Did Obama 'profit' from Fannie and Freddie?

Did Obama profit from Fannie and Freddie?

VERDICT
Partially true, but misleading. Donations don't come from companies. A list of employee contributions puts Obama second, but a different list including lobbyists and directors shows McCain getting more.

One more, there is a news story out today where cell phone only users were polled, and the results showed there wasn't really a difference in how cell-phone only users vote comapred to people with landlines. Imagine that. We're all really more alike that we are different.

BKMC, you do not speak for all women. This is evident in your little comment there.

Kitty, what's your point? You spew hate all over these blogs and suddenly you're a delicate flower?

Ugly is as ugly does.

If it walks like a pig and oinks like a pig ...

Obama gets votes by lying.

Especially to woman.

Telling people that if he is not elected rowe vs wade will be over turned.

No one has ever said they would over turn rowe vs wade, besides obama.

People truly have to stop listening to his propaganda hog wash.

He is only interested in getting elected. He has no concern about you at all.

He will lie and cheat, Oh wait he has, He will say anything to get a vote, promise anything. That does not mean as president he has the power to do any of it.

The only think a president can do is declare war, appoint supreme court justices and a few other things. (This is someone thing above his pay scale anyhow. that is what makes him scary)

The rest he promises you is just hopes and prayers. Because he is powerless to do any of them.

Putting him in charge of this country I fear, will be the thing that definitely gets us all killed.

Think of all the times he has lied to the American people.

He has not stopped lying yet. Enough said

Obama can call me bitter too....he treated Hillary and her supporters like dirt. The minute she was out I was in TEAM McCAIN. Now with Gov. Palin it only makes it sweeter!
Even Hillary and Bill are voting McCain/Palin.
Obama gave Hillary the bird when picking "no new change, Politics as usual Biden". Now it's our turn to give him the bird!

As for pro choice...McCain for years was/is, and wants it back with the States....women are not stupid enough to be one issue voters.
COUNTRY FIRST, NOT EGO!!!!!!
McCAIN/PALIN

OBAMA = BETRAYAL
Obama supporters are foolish to think that he will never betray them.
Obama was a close friend of Pastor Wright for TWENTY YEARS.
Obama threw Wright under the bus for personal ambition.
McCain would not betray his country even after 5 years of torture.
You can put lipstick on a traitor, but he's still a traitor.

what's funny is no matter how much him and his nasty trolls lie they will not change the outcome on November 4th, there will be a lot of sick people on that evening and they will sit in paralized shock wondering how did this happen, and the answer is because you voted in the primaries to put an empty suit with no experience that ran on the mantra of change but did not explain it, to run against a man that has a proven record. Look in the mirror on November 4th when McCain is President and blame the person looking back at you and then turn on MSNBC(Al-Jeezera II, tell them only what we want them to know) and blame the people talking back at you and turn on CNN and ABC and blame the people talking back at you their and then suffer for the next four years like the rest of us that you got into this mess, because of Mr. Hope and Change.

ALASKA LOVES SARAH for the great work she has done reforming government to work for the citizens, and AMERICA IS FALLING IN LOVE WITH SARAH for her genuine sincerity, honesty and brilliant mind.

THE MCCAIN/PALIN TICKET HAS GIVEN HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF AMERICA TO ALL THE 18 MILLION FORMER HILLARY SUPPORTERS who now have a very compelling reason to vote for the republican ticket, as a way to put their country first by electing a president that has the qualifications, experience and love for our country and at the same time elect a woman to the White House as equal partners in governance and leadership of our country.

Country First!

DEMOCRATS FOR MCCAIN/PALIN

McCain is a close buddy of Bush.
Obama would not betray his country even after republican lies.

Women tend to be swayed by issues more than men when a crisis strikes. National security moms went for Bush, economy moms will go for Obama this time.

Please tell me you were being sarcastic. The polls are showing that the percentage of people who like her is dropping and the people who dislike her is rising. And honesty???? Where to start on that one...Please, tell me your sarcasim did not come across on the boards and you just look like a republican parrot.

"no thanks obama: What??? exactly what hateful things did he say about her?? Facts here please." hey Beck, you and other hateful, bigoted Obama supporters have spewed your disgusting hate for months. The funny thing about democracy is that we can vote against hateful, hypocritical Obama supporters like you. VOTE NO TO BIGOTED OBAMA SUPPORTERS!!!

McCain = BETRAYAL

McCin has already betrayed America's trust with his ugly dishonest campaign.

McCain sold his soul and every principle he ever stood for to Karl Rove to serve his own ego.

Does he really think Sarah Palin is the right person for the job?

REALLY?

HOW CYNICAL. HOW DISAPPOINTING.

HOW DISHONORABLE.

McCAIN IS UNTRUSTWORTHY.

LIPSTICK ON A BUSH.

im sorry you wish not to listen to any of obamas proposals about what change means or what he would do as president, on the economy, on iraq, on or foreign relations

just because you dont read them, doesnt mean you can claim they dont exist

No Nov. 4th, message to McCain/Palin "Thanks, But No Thanks"

Posted by: Linda | Sep 19, 2008 6:15:52 PM

Typical Repub:

"Hateful hateful hate hate hateful hate hateful hate hate hateful hate ..."

REPUBS ARE HATERS.

Posted by: Ed from MA | Sep 19, 2008 6:16:37 PM

A heated debate between two candidates should not be mistaken for saying hateful things. Opponents can hit hard during debates and still have respect and work with each other afterwards.
