On Economic Bailout, Biden Brags on Obama & Blasts McCain

ABC News' Matthew Jaffe Reports: While Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain return to Washington to meet with President Bush about an economic rescue plan, Sen. Joe Biden, campaigning in Pennsylvania Thursday, argued that Obama had shown leadership on the issue while McCain had "lurched so rapidly from one fundamental position to another."

"Yesterday Barack Obama - and this is the tradition of this guy, this is how he works - in the midst of all this political blather that's going on, all the negative ads being heaped upon him, what did he do?" Biden asked at a rally in Greensburg.

"He reached out. He picked up the phone and he called John McCain and he said, 'We should put aside the politics for the day and we should see if we can agree jointly, we can agree jointly on the basic elements of what needs to be in this package, this rescue package so that not only Wall Street doesn't fail, but Main Street doesn't get crushed in the avalanche when it falls'. He showed leadership. He showed leadership by suggesting that we come together."

"In a closely contested presidential election," continued Biden, "Barack Obama stepped up to say, 'John, this is too important. This is too important. It's essential we show unity.' That's how you change the tone in Washington. That's really leadership."

At the same time, the Democratic vice-presidential candidate continued to blast McCain for what he calls the Republican's "economic epiphany" last week, when McCain said "the fundamentals of the economy are strong" and then later said "the economy is in crisis."

"You can’t be president of the United States of America and lurch so rapidly from one fundamental position to another, seeing sunlight and then seeing nothing but darkness all in a matter of two hours," Biden said, accusing McCain of flip-flopping with his views on the nation's financial stability.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you can’t gain the confidence of the nation and you can’t gain the confidence of the world when in fact you are not rooted and know exactly what you think.”

When the two candidates converge at the White House, Biden said he knows what Bush should expect to hear from Obama.

"We cannot and we will not simply bail out Wall Street without helping the millions of innocent homeowners who are struggling just to stay in their homes," said the Delaware lawmaker. "If Wall Street is going to get this help, Main Street, Main Street has to get the help as well.”

Senator Biden (D-MNBA) is the last guy who should be talking about homeowners. How much did his son get from the bank again?

What a joke Biden is. Obama's leadership on possibly the worst financial crisis in 100 years and maybe ever and Obama says "call me if you need me". My word he is a U.S. Senator and listening to his campaign has this insight into everything. Consistent with his past history he is awol-he voted present in the Illinois legislature; he votes present in the U.S. Senate; he chairs a committee in the U.S. Senate that has never met. No wander he never joined the military as he would be locked up for being awol. He is no hero; he is no leader; he is simply that editor in chief of the law review that never once authored an article.

I don't feel the need to bail out main street. If you took on a loan you can't afford, if you took on a stupid loan, you deserve what you get. Now if you are losing your house because you lost your job, different story.

Facts: Bush/Republicans tried to reign in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac five years ago. They proposed regulatory and administrative oversight of both. Who opposed this and defeated it-the DEMOCRATS led by Nancy Peloski; Charlie Rangel; Joe Biden; Christopher Dodds. Why-because they wanted to continue a mortgage program for people who could not afford a mortgage. And who is on Obama's economic staff but two of the executives of both of these companies. My God how stupid do these people think Americans are?

Leadership! Enuf said!!!Now tell me who's is playing politics with this issue...It was said somewhere in a famous book once, when you pray you do it in the privacy of your space not in public so that the world is seeing you pray.

samhiguchi, so by yoru reasoning, since the wall street gurus signed off on those bad loans shouldn't they just wallow in the pain?

The McCain/Palin campaign is such a joke. You have McCain wanting to postpone the debate and you have Palin who gave one of the worst interviews that I have seen in a long time. You also have Palin being prayed over for witchcraft and by the way, if this were Obama/Biden, this video would be in a continuous loop on every new organization. This is really sad that the McCain/Palin campaign would do anything to try to win an election.

Credit Where Credit Isn't Due: McCain and Bush's Kabuki Theatre

Now we know why McCain hired the Bush contingent.

It emerged in the White House briefing today that McCain called Bush and asked him to initiate a meeting today at 4 pm at the White House, putatively for him to "deal with" the crisis.

That is, McCain asked Bush to help him create an trifecta: To try to lend some credence to McCain's desperate assertion that a suspension of his campaign is necessary, in effect either avoiding a debate in which he would face critical questions about his stance on the economy or marching in claiming "victory"; attempting to co opt the financial crisis thereby trying to put an end to his plummeting in the polls created by his flailing positions on the economy--perhaps best reflected by his statement days ago that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong"; and perhaps buying more time for Sarah Palin after her embarrassing photo op at the UN yesterday, by moving her debate forward as well.

Here's how it happened, according to Q and A at the WHB:

McCain emailed Bush asking for the 4 P.M. meeting. Now, one reasonably might ask, why is today such a necessity for McCain, if his interest is solely the national good?

Because it is before the debate. McCain hopes to stage a meeting at the White House, thereby, with Bush's cooperation, lending plausibility to his claim to need to suspend his campaign. Then, if Republicans, in their own electoral interest, can be persuaded to come to agreement, before the debate, he would claim--in an act of utter stage management--to have "resolved" the crisis. Thereby hoping to take the heat off on his past careening stances and sliding polls and staunch the bleeding on the polls--before the debate.

This is Kabuki Theatre masquerading as substance--no different than what we saw at the U.N. yesterday.

It is utterly stage managed, utterly cynical, and utterly unrelated to the substantive deliberation necessary to actually resolve these matters on the merits and for our nation's future, rather than for short-term and desperate political advantage.

These occurrences are equally important for what they indicate about McCain's governing style as they are for their impact upon democratic process: impulsive acts that rely on drama and theatrical posture rather than substantive reasoning and long-term deliberation; a strong willingness to sacrifice substantive reasoning, deliberative process, and even prior structures and agreements to immediate political need; an attempt to reach outcomes through last minute stage management rather than substantive argument.

These should create deep concern for anyone who wishes for a change in governmental process from the past eight years.

We have an economy, rather than a campaign, to rescue. Putting nation before politics means putting all attempts to resolve it before political attempts to co opt it--and to move towards one's commitments, rather than towards a more immediate and short-term salvation.

Biden is right and you McCainbots are full of it once again.

McCain rushes back and forth with hysterical Drama Queens antics. He thinks this is a game of Simon Says and he's Simon.

Wrong.

OBAMA IS THE LEADER.

McCAIN IS A LIAR AND A COWARD, trying to hide from his mistakes.

NO, JOHN - YOU CAN'T CANCEL SARAH PALIN'S DEBATE.

COWARD!!!

What a great guy! I love Joe Biden.

Joe Biden is one of the guys who voted to make it harder for people to file bankruptcy. Wouldn't want his contributors (credit card, anyone?) to lose any money. He's a fake. Obama must have told Biden to go throw his longtime friend, McCain, under the bus. Biden lost my vote. Christine O'Donnell U.S Senate 08
