Palin's Earmarks a 'Bear' of An Issue
September 13, 2008 1:28 PM
ABC News' Ron Claiborne reports: For the past year, Sen. John McCain has told a pretty good joke about grizzly bears to make a point about what he deems wasteful federally-funded earmark spending.
"My friends," McCain says, "we spent $3 million of your money to study the DNA of bears in Montana. "Now I don't know if that was a paternity issue or a criminal issue, but it was a waste of money."
It turns out, the state of Alaska under Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, sought millions in federal funds to study the genetics of harbor seals, and gather data on halibut fisheries and sea crabs.
According to Politico, Alaska requested $3.2 million for "Seal and Stellar Sea Lion Biological Research," which would among to things be used to monitor ice seal populations in Native villages and study the "specifies delineation and genetics of harbors seals to understand the declines in populations and provide for population restoration."
The state also sought $2 million to look into Bering Sea crab productivity and sustainability" and $494,900 to collect data for an assessment of recreational halibut harvest.
In his exclusive ABC News interview with Palin, World News anchor Charles Gibson asked her about the request for federal funds to research seals.
"Those requests, through our research divisions and fish and game and our wildlife departments and our universities, those research requests did come through that system, but wanting it to be in the light of day, not behind closed doors, with lobbyists making deals with Congress to stick things in there under the public radar.," Palin said. "That's the abuse that we're going to stop. That's what John McCain has promised over and over for these years."
She said, "The abuse of earmarks, it's un-American, it's undemocratic, and it's not going to be accepted in a McCain-Palin administration. Earmark abuse will stop."
In 26-plus years in Congress, McCain has never sought an earmark for his home state Several earmarks received by Wasilla, Alaska while Palin was mayor of the town of 6,700 were cited on McCain's pork list several years ago.

October Surprise? Lawsuit Claiming Obama Not a US Citizen
A Lafayette Hill lawyer who filed a legal challenge to Sen. Barack Obama's presidential candidacy claiming he doesn't meet U.S. residency requirements had a motion for a temporary restraining order denied Friday.
Though the motion was denied, Berg said he was encouraged that Judge R. Barclay Surrick did not dismiss the lawsuit. The litigation also sought "expedited discovery."

McCain lied. Plain and simple. It's time the media covers issues instead of attacks, and polls. What about comparing policy positions and plans instead of who changed what logo.

Hypocrisy Unleashed: In the Earmark Game, Obama Beats McCain, $740 Million To Nothing
"Sarah Palin is a Governor who reduced her state’s earmarks by 63%, nearly 2/3rds, since taking office. It’s still high in Alaska (for reasons the article describes), but it is only a third of what it used to be."

Fact Obama was born in Hawaii a couple of years after Hawaii became a U.S. state. Fact McCain was born in Panama on a military base. McCain is more likely to be a non- citizen then Obama is.

Studying the DNA of bears in Montana, or studying the genetics of harbor seals, halibut, and sea crabs may very well be money well spent.
1. It certainly will advance our understanding of genetics generally
2. It may help us to understand how to better protect species threatened with extinction.
Both worthwhile goals.
Certainly more worthwhile to the WHOLE POPULATION OF THE UNITED STATES than spending hundreds of millions of dollars on "infrastructure" AKA "boondoggles" aka "earmarks" AKA "pork" in Alaska such as multiple "bridges to nowhere", "roads to nowhere", and million dollar sports complexes for small towns with a population hardly large enough to fill a high-school gymnasium in a rural town in the lower 48.
=====================================
I guess the point is ithe hypocrisy, and irony of McCain no claiming that, despite overwhelming evidence to the ocntrary, Gov. Palin is a "reformer", someone who has fought to reduce wasteful government spending.
It won't make a bit of difference. The Republican base has fallen hard for this "Joan of Arc" from Wasilla, this "Marilyn Monroe", packing heat, this "Little Red Riding Hood" who shoots defenseless wolves from overflying helicopters, and her daughter JUNO from JUNEAU.
They don't care about substance, they ignore hypocrisy, disturbing FACTS do not trouble them.
They are hunkered in a mental bunker untroubled by the world of facts, evidence, and real threats that the rest of us live in.

We don't know this woman!!! You may not like Obama, but his record has been out there for almost two years. Every single word and facial expression has been picked apart.
Isn't it the journalists' job to scrutinize Pallin. She is much more likely to be President if McCain wins. Is it only the media's job to be stenographers for the campaign?

Obama sought earmarks? I am shocked...just shocked!
Has HE ever claimed he didn't? No, he did not. So, he is not a hypocrite.
Now which politician running in this fall's presidential elections did claim she is against earmarks, that she said "thanks, but no thanks" and returned the money to the federal government?
Hmmm...
If I could just find out who that was then I would sure call that politician a liar and a hypocrite...out to deceive the American public about his/her real political agenda.

Obama has nothing against earmarks McCain does. There are good earmarks so as for infrastructure, education, and etc. So McCains says he'll fight earmark spending and then picks Alaska governor Palin you has ask for more earmarks per constituent, it is a little bit hypocritical.
Posted by: MM | Sep 13, 2008 1:54:27 PM
Don't blame ABC or the media. The fact is that the McCain campaign is dishonest and the media is just doing its role. For McCain, what goes around comes around. Period. McCain is really out of touch. I saw him on the view, he said lies regarding Palin, a proof that he doesn't know her at all. What a dream team.
Posted by: Fred | Sep 13, 2008 1:57:51 PM
I personally think it is wrong for McCain to vote against every earmark before distinguishing if it is good or not. If I earmark money to my state to help put computers in schools, McCain would vote against it because it is an "earmark".

If being interested in the truth is a liberal attribute, then I guess I'm liberal.
McCain/Palin bring this on themselves when they push their demonstrably false earmark talking points.
Maybe they should change the subject, if they have anything else CONSTRUCTIVE to talk about.
And maybe the haters should find another blog to troll. It just seems to put you in a bad mood. Have a good weekend.

In fact, after two weeks we know quite a lot.
1. She tells naked lies about her political past.
2. She RAISED taxes on oil corporations. She returned the extra revenue directly to Alaskan citizens. Essentially, she raised the cost of oil, and at least by Republican economic logic, past the cost of that tax down to the rest of us in the lower 48. We paid that tax in higher fuel costs.
3. She is the QUEEN of pork, though she presents herself as a cost-cutter. Not when it comes to gobbling up a disproportionate slice of the federal pie for her precious Alaskan constituents.
4. She pretends to know or care about energy policy. She does not. She knows oil companies, and that's all.
5. She pretends to have taken on oil companies. She has not, she is in their pocket fighting to get ANWR opened for drilling.
6. She pretends to know even the first thing about foreign policy, because she can "see Russia from Alaska". Well, I can see the moon from my backyard, that doesn't make me an Astronaut.
etc, etc.
7. She thinks she that by praying she kind influence the mind of God to support a pipeline deal she is trying to work out with Canada.

Republicans don't care. They want to preserve her as an Icon. They are not in the least interested to learn who she REALLY is.
We Democrats pay her more respect by actually bothering to look at her real record of accomplishments - including successes, failures, lies SHE has told about her own record, but also LIES that have been told by opponents about her record.
Palin's most vociferous supporters live in FANTASY LAND. They don't want that bubble burst.

In fact you can google Obama's earmarks to find out what they were. He co-sponsored a bill with Sen. you really are a moron if you conflate fact checking with liberal bias. It is the all too often overlooked responsibility of the press, to check on the veracity of what politicians say. It is important to the public to know more than their PR handouts. If Palin presents herself as a crusader against pork - but - by McCain's own standards - has been a voracious consumer of pork - that matters. That is important. that is something you can double check for yourself. McCain and Palin are simply lying to you - telling you what polls say you want to hear. You should demand more of your own candidates than that.

Congressional "earmarks" are requested
and accepted by U.S. Senators and
U.S. Congressmen and Congresswomen!
I don't believe that a state or a
municipality can directly request an
"earmark" from the U.S. Government!
This is a bogus non-issue!
If you want a conflict between the
Presidential Candidates and the their VP
Candidates you need look no further than the fact that Obama opposed the
Iraq War and Biden voted in favor of it as did Hillary Clinton!
Posted by: reaganfan | Sep 13, 2008 2:30:00 PM
To MM - look at Palin's mentor - Senator Ted Stevens. He was the earmark king and power broker that Palin lobbied for earmarks when she was mayor of Wasilla. Appropriations bills must start in the House - but the Senate can craft their own version and then they go to a conference committee to work out the differences.
Posted by: nh bob | Sep 13, 2008 2:31:31 PM
I think earmark issue is not worth discussing as Climate Change and Fishing(one source of Income for Alaska) is an important issue to Alaska. There may be differences with McCain but she did her job to represented her people.
I think reading following statement by Palin can give you good Idea and those who care for environment and Climate change should jump up and down:
"Those requests, through our research divisions and fish and game and our wildlife departments and our universities, those research requests did come through that system, but wanting it to be in the light of day, not behind closed doors, with lobbyists making deals with Congress to stick things in there under the public radar.," Palin said. But Obama and Biden are both running on the well established fact - that Obama was right about the war - they aren't pretending that they were for the war all along. Palin was presented as a crusader against pork - when all along she has been a voracious consumer. She is running on a lie. That is a serious issue.
Posted by: nh bob | Sep 13, 2008 2:33:55 PM
MM: Bills can originate in either the House or Senate and be amended in either. If two similar bills are passed, they are sent to a conference committee to iron out the differences and make a unified bill. To directly answer your question - pork can arise in either.
Problem is that earmarks are not all bad and that they represent a very tiny portion of the federal budget according to the GAO. Earmarks are the frequent target of the uninformed. More importantly, if one actually cares about curtailing spending, is Medicare and Social Security.

As a replubican women and a nurse I am thrilled that this organization endorsed Obama. I am sorry I do like Palin and I will can not trust her as a president.
Yesterday, the American Nurses Association officially endorsed Barack Obama for the 2008 Presidential Election. The ANA represents the interests of the nation's 2.9 million registered nurses.
"As President, Barack Obama will bring real change to our health care system," said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR. "Nurses are consistently voted the most trusted profession by the American people, and we, as a profession, trust that Barack Obama will see that affordable quality health care is made available to everyone."
"I am honored to receive the endorsement of the American Nurses Association," said Sen. Barack Obama.
"The nurses of America serve our country tirelessly, and I share their belief that we must bring affordable and accessible health care to all Americans. My plan lowers health care costs for the average American family by up to $2500 and finally makes health care work better for American families than it does for the drug and insurance companies."
"Both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton spoke at ANA's House of Delegates in June about the need to move forward in unity to bring about real, much needed change to our health care system, and our nursesresponded; 'Yes we can'" Patton added. "Nurses represent the largest group of health care professionals in this country, and working together, we can use our power in the voting booth to make health care a priority, and make Barack Obama the next President of the United States."
Senator Obama is committed to signing universal health legislation by the end of his first term in office that ensures all Americans have high-quality, affordable health care coverage. Barack Obama recognizes that nurses play a critical role in every aspect of patient care, and the nursing shortage ranks as one of the most pressing issues facing our health care system. Obama's health care plan includes expanded funding to improve the primary care and public health practitioner workforce; including loan repayments, improved reimbursement and training grants.
Barack Obama has a history of advocacy for nurses and patients. In the Illinois senate, he helped lead efforts to protect nurses and improve the quality of health care. In the U.S. Senate, he cosponsored the Safe Nursing and Patient Care Act, which limits mandatory overtime for nurses to true emergency situations, and as President, he has promised to sign this important legislation into law.
ANA has been making presidential endorsements since 1984. The endorsement process includes sending a questionnaire on nursing and health care issues to all of the Democratic and Republican candidates, an invitation to all of the democratic and republican candidates for a personal interview and an online survey of ANA's membership regarding which candidate is most supportive of nursing's agenda.

When did Hillary and Joe vote "in favor of going to war with Iraq".
As I recall, they voted in favor of allowing Pres. Bush the OPTION of going to war at a time of his choosing.
That's no more voting in favor of going to war in Iraq, then Sarah Palin saying the the WAR in Iraq was God's will.
The decision to go to war was Pres. Bush's and his alone.
As it should be, as President he is the Commander-in-Chief.
He just happened to make the wrong decision. Obama was right about that.:-)

So to Tim - the quote from the ABC interview that you present as a defense of Palin - is essentially a defense of earmarks - Palin is saying that if you look at some of requests closely - like some of the requests that McCain has made fun of in the past - they are for things that we should be doing that help our people and help our economy. Not even close to what McCain claims - he says no earmarks will get past his desk - none - nada - so according to Palin - McCain is wrong. That's great - no matter what you believe is true - vote for them!!

Whether or not any of her earmarks were money well-spent is another question all together.
Maybe they were, maybe they weren't.
What IS NOT at issue, is that she is a LIAR.

Tell the truth: isnt' it the media's job to tell the truth, not to present "both sides of a story" ? If McCain said the moon was made of green cheese shouldn't the media say "McCain has gone nuts" rather than "opinions about the moon differ". Well, McCain has gone nuts.. that or he has just turned into a pathalogical liar. His campaign just continues to repeat things that are easily seen to be lies.
Against earmarks? Palin has more earmarks per capita than any other state.
Change? McCain has exactly the same policies as bush.
I mean, how many times can McCain say something that is just plain false and the media lets him get away with is.

If the Dems lose this election it won't be so much a reflection on the Dems but a reflection on what America really stands for. If the majority wants another 8 years of Bush, another 8 years of isolation as our ideology continues to turn our Allies off, another 8 years of destroying the middle class. We will reap what we sow. This is not the America I want.

Excuse me, but when did legitimate oversight of candidates become a sign of "media bias"?
We've been presented a candidate who clearly doesn't have even a basic understanding of national issues. Is the media supposed to ignore her ignorance? Are we supposed to not pay attention when the things she says so clearly contradict her record?
I mean, what kind of country do you people want to live in?

Dear Suz - so you hate most of America do you? Your Republicans have given us: 9-11, No WMD's, the disaster of the war in Iraq, mission accomplished, Good job brownie, Abu Gahrib, Gitmo, torture, Katrina, job losses, an increase in poverty, an increase in inflation, stagnant wages, the housing crisis, the oil crisis, the mortgage crisis, Bin Laden still living, record foreclosures, Jack Abramoff, Ted Stevens, the K-street project, suspension of habeas corpus, astronomical deficits, a falling dollar, and a massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to the ruling elite. And you don't even have the decency to say "I'm sorry" or "My bad". You should not be allowed to use sharp tools without adult supervision.

Clearly a McCain supporter as yet not fully comfortable with email and the internet.
Kerry, welcome to the internets..,
A few tips:
1. When posting on a blog: CAPITAL LETTERS INDICATE YOU ARE SHOUTING!!!!!!!
Are you shouting?
2. You may resort to capital letters judiciously to indicate EMPHASIS!
As in, McCain & Palin are LIARS & SLEAZE MERCHANTS....(just an example).
3. Spelling errors, errors in punctuation, and slips of grammar are to be expected when typing and posting hasty responses. I for one, generally ignore them in others, and hope for the same courtesy from them.
However, too many misspellings, grammatical errors undermine your own message. Consider using something called SPELL CHECK, to at least check your spelling.
Otherwise...
Welcome aboard:-)

As far as despicable ads go...just go to any of the independent watchdog groups like "FactCheck.com". These groups are nonpartisan and have always kept very neutral in elections. They are just keepers to the facts, referees if you will.
In the last few weeks they have cried foul about many of McCain's ads. Basically saying that he is simply spouting bullsh$t.
Yes, I can hear all you right wing fanboys now "THEY ARE BIASED!" but look at their record of keeping to the center! They are as honest a bunch of judges as it comes.
The problem is not the referees, the problem is the Mccain campaign has turned to simply throwing made up mud. The american public will see this and reject him.

Compare attacks ... McCain is old vs Obama is for child sex ed.
Compare truth ... McCain is old vs McCain seriously distorting Obama's record.
I think McCain had it coming.

What happened to McCain's promise to run an honest and respectable campaign and not to resort to throwing mud?
Guess that went out the window when the straight-talk express derailed.

I love how 'liberal' has somehow become some kind of epithet. I mean if not for liberals, we'd have had no Declaration of independence, no Constitution, no Revolution. No end to slavery, no civil rights, no innovation. The conservatives have always been against these radical new ideas that have provided every advancement of american society. The largest terrorist attack in our history happened on the watch of the Republicans. Tey to blame Clinton all you like, but Bush had been in charge for 9 months. He bungled and let it happen, and has been bungling everything since. The war, the current state of the economy (thank you for mortgage deregulation and the push for 100% financing Pres. Bush), the debt - 10-15 BILLION a MONTH on the war on credit. No actual progress on the war on terror except to dramatically increase terrorist recruitment through random middle east invasion and torture. The current administration has been criminally incompetent. President Bush has completely befouled his oath. McPalin wants to change nothing, he firmly stands behind every position. Taxes, the war, economy. Wants to continue or increase the impact of every policy. McPalin wants to tell you who you can marry, what you can do with your body and that corporations will know better what to do with your money than you do.

Candidates resort to throwing mud when they see that they are losing ground when they talk about the issues.
McCain is losing on policy arguments because his policies are exactly the same as Bush's policies and he tries to call himself the candidate of change. Everyone knows Bush is unpopular, and McCain would just continue the same discredited path.
So instead of talking about issues, McCain throws mud and tries to change the topic into "Obama wants sex ed for kindergarten". A made-up non-issue.
The sad thing is that mudslinging in this country seems to work. it worked for Bush in 00, and in 04. It will probably work for Mccain too. Well, too bad for our country if we fall for this again. See where it got us over the last eight years.

Under President Clinton, America had friends among nations.
Under the wild bush-McCaint, has had one FAILURE after another, BOTH on the national and international level.
Maniac muslim terrorists were allowed liberty in Afghanistan-Pakistan
Insane islamists were generated by bad bush-McCaint policy in Iraq.
Iraq is more unstable; Iran is stronger and more determined.
Ally Pakistan is weaker, while insane islamic terrorists continue to multiply in ever-increasing numbers.
Ally Georgia is much much weaker and Russia is stronger.
Tensions are increasing in Latin America on account of the VISION-LESS and overbearing policies of a wild bush-McCaint.
The unintelligent and INTEMPERATE McCaint is even worse than his double, bush.
And Sarah Pollen is truly a waste of time. Greedy lobbyist would run America further into the ground under McCain-Pollen.
McCaint means MORE WARS; because the man lacks vision & good judgment!

Despite every effort to divert attention AWAY FROM OBAMA, he just keeps slipping. Could it possibly be because he's so shallow and his supporters can't think of anything positive to say about him?

Shame on the Democrat led Congress, for doing nothing
for the past months and just blaming other for their incompetence
regarding our ennergy crisis and let me add the economy too, President Bush
for years has been shouting for alternative energy like Solar, Wind and Nuclear energy
so we do not have to be dependent on foriegn energy but Democrat
San Francisco's Nancy Pelosi and Democrat Nevada's Harry Reid
just keeping on blocking the bill. This is the same Congress and the same party
that Obama belongs to, The DNC(Do Nothing Congess) the worse Congress in US history!!
