Palin's Earmarks a 'Bear' of An Issue
September 13, 2008 1:28 PM
ABC News' Ron Claiborne reports: For the past year, Sen. John McCain has told a pretty good joke about grizzly bears to make a point about what he deems wasteful federally-funded earmark spending.
"My friends," McCain says, "we spent $3 million of your money to study the DNA of bears in Montana. "Now I don't know if that was a paternity issue or a criminal issue, but it was a waste of money."
It turns out, the state of Alaska under Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, sought millions in federal funds to study the genetics of harbor seals, and gather data on halibut fisheries and sea crabs.
According to Politico, Alaska requested $3.2 million for "Seal and Stellar Sea Lion Biological Research," which would among to things be used to monitor ice seal populations in Native villages and study the "specifies delineation and genetics of harbors seals to understand the declines in populations and provide for population restoration."
The state also sought $2 million to look into Bering Sea crab productivity and sustainability" and $494,900 to collect data for an assessment of recreational halibut harvest.
In his exclusive ABC News interview with Palin, World News anchor Charles Gibson asked her about the request for federal funds to research seals.
"Those requests, through our research divisions and fish and game and our wildlife departments and our universities, those research requests did come through that system, but wanting it to be in the light of day, not behind closed doors, with lobbyists making deals with Congress to stick things in there under the public radar.," Palin said. "That's the abuse that we're going to stop. That's what John McCain has promised over and over for these years."
She said, "The abuse of earmarks, it's un-American, it's undemocratic, and it's not going to be accepted in a McCain-Palin administration. Earmark abuse will stop."
In 26-plus years in Congress, McCain has never sought an earmark for his home state Several earmarks received by Wasilla, Alaska while Palin was mayor of the town of 6,700 were cited on McCain's pork list several years ago.

what is it they don't want the rest of us to find out?
=======================================
They don't know less about the candidate they have been supporting so forcefully than Democrats and Independents.
Democrats, Independents, and the non-partisan media have - Surprise - actually taken the trouble to learn about Gov. Palin's actual record, positions, and policies.
Republicans don't care. They want to preserve her as an Icon. They are not in the least interested to learn who she REALLY is.
We Democrats pay her more respect by actually bothering to look at her real record of accomplishments - including successes, failures, lies SHE has told about her own record, but also LIES that have been told by opponents about her record.
Palin's most vociferous supporters live in FANTASY LAND. They don't want that bubble burst.
Hey Palin supporters - Palin is not Santa Claus - and in any case, if you haven't yet heard - SANTA CLAUSE IS NOT REAL.
Even if he is supposed to live somewhere up there around Juneau.

Palin Campaigned for the Bridge to Nowhere after it was already killed by Congress in 2005. She has kept 73 million of the funds still hoping to deliver a scaled down version. TPM is reporting

now that Palin is a celebrity (like Paris Hilton) she's going to be held accountable.

Has anyone noticed the tone of the topics for this blog?
Scan down the list of topics and see how many support Obama and Biden or try to demean John McCain and Sarah Palin.
You folks at ABC need to at least TRY to look like an independent news source instead of an outlet for Obama campaign propaganda.
Anybody But Obama...

F-uck the liberal bias at ABC News.

OH, PLEASE! It's only like this because the McCain/Palin camp keep putting out lies and false accusations. Obama doesn't put out statments or ads that are normally scrutanized because they're TRUE!
The media is doing it's job. If you don't like it, take it up with your candidate for running false ads and picking an inexperienced running mate that no one knows ANYTHING about.
In the meantime, check out this site... see who's running his campaign:

Fact: Chicago has the third largest gross metropolitan product in the nation — approximately $440 billion according to 2007 estimates.[35] The city has also been rated as having the most balanced economy in the United States, due to its high level of diversification.
Fact: Daley kept Walmart out of Chicago by raising the minimum wage
Fact: Chicago politics may be tough but it gets things done.
Fact: Obama represents Chicago.

obamamama (which I'm sure you're not)...Obama (unlike most people in Congress) disclosed all his earmark information for the last couple of years (he requested none this year). In fact you can google Obama's earmarks to find out what they were. He co-sponsored a bill with Sen. Coburn from OK to have more government transparency so that the American people could see who is asking for what. And as I'm sure you know, Alaska is the worst offender.

If the DEMS lose, their life will be over (if you believe doom and gloom Obama). If the REPUBS lose, they will sit back and watch the DEMS corral their supporters and deliver nothing but the promise of change. The DEMS have used thier constituency for years, and their voters just go back for more. Hey DEMS, how's being a DEM worked out for you so far? Just trying to help you see the light.

I hoped any reporter could ask Sarah Palin her view on issues that 60%+ Americans agree on. Would she choose the will of the people or stick to her personal/religious belief to make a decision? I think that is a real concerning part of Sarah Palin.

Bush in a skirt. Deal with it.

Palin's earmarks were some of the most dramatic porkers that McCain fought against. I guess he does think that if you put lipstick on a pig, it's called reform and change.
Posted by: hopesprings52 | Sep 13, 2008 2:26:04 PM
Congress began the corrupt practice of earmarks. John McCain has promised to veto legislation that contains them. I hope the press continues to push the issue regarding Palin. It only serves to point out how corrupt our Congress is. The more attention to the issue the better.

If the REPUBS lose...
Democrats will have a chance to put this nation's house in order, and clean up the mess that Bush and the Republican Congress created over the past 6 of the 8 years.
If the REPUBS win...
Well, I'm going to join up quick with some Christian fundamentalist church, 'cause this time they'll be right...
ARMAGEDDON is upon us.:-)

you really are a moron if you conflate fact checking with liberal bias. It is the all too often overlooked responsibility of the press, to check on the veracity of what politicians say. It is important to the public to know more than their PR handouts. If Palin presents herself as a crusader against pork - but - by McCain's own standards - has been a voracious consumer of pork - that matters. That is important. that is something you can double check for yourself. McCain and Palin are simply lying to you - telling you what polls say you want to hear. You should demand more of your own candidates than that.

Can somebody tell me the answer to this question. I just realize the House of Reps is responsible for financial legislation. Finance and taxes start in the House. So can Senators even propose earmarks in legislation?

Congressional "earmarks" are requested
and accepted by U.S. Senators and
U.S. Congressmen and Congresswomen!
I don't believe that a state or a
municipality can directly request an
"earmark" from the U.S. Government!
This is a bogus non-issue!
If you want a conflict between the
Presidential Candidates and the their VP
Candidates you need look no further than the fact that Obama opposed the
Iraq War and Biden voted in favor of it as did Hillary Clinton!
